Excellent! Thank you for this valuable information. I have been trying to buy a 2022 Toyota Corolla SE for about 10 months now and I have faced much chicanery obfuscation and deception from some salesmen. Just two weeks ago, I was watching a popular Toyota master mechanic KZbin channel and decided what trim and options I wanted. He sold me on my buying my first Toyota. Within hours I found the car I needed online and bought the car which was delivered within13 days with zero problems. This car had exactly the trim color and options I specified. Today I drove the car home and am very enthusiastic about the car buying process via one special salesman. I will be referring all of my friends in market for a new Toyota to this excellent honest salesman. Finally, the sales process was fast, simple and smooth. I am thinking of buying a different model 2022 or 2023 for a second vehicle (Tacoma SR ) very soon. Tomorrow, I will have the car detailed by my own detail specialist and prepared to my requirements.

Call around, they aren't all doing it. Two dealers near me added $1700 "addendum" while a third dealer is selling at msrp. I called an adjacent state and those dealers are adding anywhere from 5-15G onto msrp. But, I agree, it should be the same across the board and not permitted.

Thanks for the explanation David, like most of the people that made comments I too wish there was a way to order exactly what you want. The "Build Your Toyota" web site suggests that you can but in reality you are just coming up with a wish list and then hoping what you want is somewhere out there. Personally I think Toyota needs to adopt the order concept that Ford has and give the customers who are willing to put down a deposit a way to get exactly what you want. The price tags are too high to have to compromise.

Thanks for this explanation. This makes it more clear after speaking with the dealer. I think it’s very misleading that Toyota has a configuration tool on their main site that gives the customer the impression that they have full control over the build of their car. I don’t understand why they won’t build them to order. Then every customer would get exactly what they want, even if they have to wait a few weeks to get it. Let’s see if I can get the truck I want. I don’t plan to spend $70k on a new truck and then ‘settle’ for something less than perfect.

So the consumer is who gets screwed here. Most people buying trucks have a specific budget and want a specific list of options/features. In this case they would have no choice but to search dealers all over a region of the country in hopes of maybe finding what they need. Absolutely asinine approach to building trucks. I like the domestic brands' approach. I walked into a dealership this past summer, told them EXACTLY what I wanted, and 3 weeks later it arrived on a truck.

Thank you for the very detailed explanation. My local Toyota dealerships told me me they could order me the specific Tundra I wanted. They told me they took a deposit but never actually charged my credit card. I found out from talking to other dealerships that there is not such thing as ordering from Toyota. I had to look around online and find a dealership that was getting an allocation for the exact Tundra I wanted and they were 200 miles away. So then the question is what value is the dealership to me if I have to find my own vehicle and do all of the work on line? The dealership model is broken and vehicles should be ordered on line.

That sucks when you are buying a 68 k truck but at least I am in line for my first Toyota ever and can walk away if a Ford or Ram becomes available first. I am far down the line with many in front of me at the dealership for the Tundra and hope I get the chance to try one but am loosing hope. Crazy times we live in.

This was long before Covid I went to a dealership and they were preparing their allocation of 2017 Tacoma’s. I asked the allocation manager could I order a 17 Tacoma he sat down with me and help me with the color and options. He told it would be here in 4 to 6 weeks. The truck arrived at the dealership in 5 weeks. I was impressed with the overall process. I did not have to put any money down either.

Understand the Toyota model, but what’s illogical is that you said the Toyota production plan is to accommodate customer demand. However, the model essentially doesn’t include the actual customer demand (their orders) in the process. Not exactly customer friendly approach - it’s work with the dealer and hope!
@AutomotivePress
@AutomotivePress 3 жыл бұрын
What they do in terms of "meeting customer demand" is more on a global scale when forecasting the vehicles for many months ahead. They take into account they type of models/trims dealers ask for and then build a forecast model based on that demand. Since dealers are actually the "customers" for Toyota (we are customers to the dealers), the demand forecast/distribution is based on the dealers' needs - hope this makes sense

@@tikitak1155 Toyota’s method obviously has been working for them, but it makes it hard to distinguish between the signal and the noise when there’s a hot selling car. The dealer might report back to Toyota that they’ve been getting “requests” from non-paying customers, but then Toyota will see that the dealer is actually sold out, so do they pay attention to “requests” or to hard sales numbers? Hot cars like the C8 corvette and the Bronco would be in a similar situation, but people have been able to custom order them, so these customers are getting exactly what they want. On the other hand, Toyota is telling its customers that they know best, so they will make what in their experience has sold well, regardless of what actual customer demand right now is.

The hybrids will be available in spring, but the problem is that very few TRD Pro's are allocated per dealer. Small dealers sometimes don't get them at all - so my estimate of the summer is that by then, most dealers would have some allocation for TRD Pro's and you will actually be able to buy it. You have to keep in mind that most dealers have 1 or 2 year waiting list for all TRD Pro's, so even if your dealer end up with an allocation, you might not get that allocation. I hope this helps...

If yes, then how does a customer know which dealers receive more allocations than others? I'm interested in the 2023 Corolla Hybrid. I was very interested in the Rav4 Prime, but allocations were limited to very few states - not Arizona. Why does Toyota not allocate all models to all states? No wonder I'm reading it takes 6+ months to get the vehicle you want if they don't have it in inventory. Really sucks on the rarer vehicles like the GR Corolla or GR86. I assume their allocations are much lower due to a lower expected sales expectation from the manufacturer. Thanks for explaining the process in detail in this video. Very helpful to understand. That doesn't make sense. You said that Toyota makes allocations based on previous dealer orders, but then you said that dealers can not place orders. So which is it? Are dealers placing orders or is Toyota just assigning cars to dealers? Additionally, there seems to be some muddying of the waters in regards to who owns a car and what is an order. You said something about pre-purchasing. Are you saying that you can walk into a Toyota dealership with a briefcase full of cash and pre-purchase whatever car in whatever options you want, but if you request this configuration from the dealer, they must first bring it onto their lot as inventory, rather than a purchased car. Is this the distinction? If so, does this explain the previous contradiction? It seems that this is the answer to the problem. Just pre-purchase your cars through the dealers directly.

Thanks for this video David. I'm in the Vancouver area, waiting 9 months so far for a Rav4 Prime XSE + from my nearby dealer. The salesman has called me up to offer a couple of RAV4 Primes in other trims during that time, so if I was more flexible I'd already have my car, but I'm holding out for the Technology bundle. My questions: Does the allocation system work the same for the RAV4 Primes coming from Japan? And do you think it might help to put down a deposit at one or more other BC dealers to speed up the process?
@AutomotivePress
@AutomotivePress 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it works in a similar fashion, but even more difficult to figure out when coming out of Japan (more unpredictable). It does help to put deposit with a couple of dealers but make sure that you get in writing that deposits are 100% refundable if you change your mind

Good explanation. Seems like Toyota is a bit of a pain to deal with as a company. First, all the mystery before the release of information. Then a kind of melodramatic climax and maybe they didn't go far enough on the build. Why go part way on tow, payload, and hp capability? Why not build a super truck like the raptor or trx.? Why not give a front locker on a true off-road truck? Then this slow release of pricing followed by this weird " you can't order what you want" and let's hide the prices as long as possible. Then of course the up to 1.5 year wait on a tundra TRD pro. Jeez. They seem to hold back alot. Wish they'd let go and get more interesting and a bit more radical and cutting edge. Do something groundbreaking and unique that's all your own. Make a mark.

You say not very significant their tailgate button in the taillight, but once you would use it, than you would not want to have another truck that does not have it. I agree with alot of your points about the way Toyota are doing things, but you said do something unique... I was just pointing out 1 thing they did that is unique. We can agree to disagree if it is or not, but if no one else has it, I'd say that meets the "unique" definition.

@@DS-cw8pm your missing the point. To push a button on a key fob with your hands full is alot more difficult than just hitting Toyota's button on taillight with a elbow or a knee when your hands are full. Toyota's idea is better is that respect. As far as those 6 way tailgates, how well are they going to stay together after 5 or more years of use? GM has a history of their tailgate latches breaking off. If GM can't figure out how to make a tailgate latch hold up over time, how will a multi function tailgate with so many hinges and latches ever hold up over time?

What I don't understand and cant find info on is why you can build and price a vehicle on Toyotas website just like all the other manufactures if you can not order a vehicle the way you want exactly through the dealership! and on Toyotas website it dose not explain there process to consumers.

I hope this helps others facing g the current car dealership predatory marketing and sales. In the US, to the best of my understanding, it is illegal for dealerships to add dealer add on accessories into the total price, not to be confused with the manufacturer add on accessories (FTC regulations and usually state regulations). Sadly it is 100% legal for adjusted market value price gauging. Unless a deposit is paid as apart of a signed contract such as a build order or intent to purchase agreement, or the dealership gives a written deposit refund policy, such as in an email, then they legally do not have to refund it and can force buyers into using that money with their dealership. If you have fallen victim to predatory sales and marketing in the US please report it to your local state consumer rights or attorney general. Furthermore reports can be made with the FTC fraud investigations online form submission.

Bad news!! Longo Toyota points the issue to supply problems brought about by the global chip shortage. According to the largest Toyota dealership in the world by land area, only 61 Tundras will be delivered to the Los Angeles area over the next three months. The Tundra TRD Pro will be the most challenging Tundra to find, according to Longo Toyota. Buyers of the top-spec variant will have to wait from nine months to 1.5 years. If you're in the market for a fully-loaded Tundra, there's a huge chance that you'll be getting a 2023 model. For the other variants, the wait time ranges from four to nine months. There isn't any information about the upcoming Tundra Capstone, but we're wagering the situation will be the same.

I don’t like this system at all. As a new customer i went to only one dealership and booked a vehicle which was in extreme shortage at that time and i was quoted 18 months. Now it has been nearly 2 years still dealership said to me they got no update when the vehicle will be build and arriving. So as customer do you think i should have asked them if they had sold these vehicles before as i dont think they are being allocated those specific vehicles by Toyota. Some people got it in one year wait and some in 15 months from different dealerships. And some like me have a never ending wait. Vehicle I’m talking is Toyota Land-cruiser Troop carrier

Hi David. Thanks for the video... while I understood a large piece, this did fill in some blanks. The problem is that dealers don't know which optional packages are allowed, etc. In other words, if I ask if a truck has cameras without the PVM package, the answer is they don't know. Why doesn't toyota give the dealers this information. It's made the "ordering" process messy bc they come back days later with different info after the fact
@AutomotivePress
@AutomotivePress 3 жыл бұрын
Actually Toyota dealers (both in the US and in Canada) know exactly what options/features/packages are available. it's all 100% clear now so if your dealer is telling you they don't know, that isn't true. It was true about a month ago, but the dealers now know exactly what optional packages are available and allowed. The reason why they are saying that they don't know "which ones are allowed" is because they don't know which packages they are going to receive through the allocation, so they want you to believe that they "don't know" what's allowed. They know the exact make up of the options right now.

2022 TRD Sport 4Runner arrived two days ago and has Panoramic View Monitoring. One source indicates it's an option, another source indicates it's not available; the feature isn't listed on the Maroney label, isn't listed on the "V-Spec" or "Details" sheets. Toyota engineering, new vehicle development and production process in my opinion is the best in the industry. The focus is extreme and true craftsmanship. However, Toyota makes it so difficult to buy the vehicle with the trim level and options you want. The dealer allocation system sucks! Even David with all the vehicles he buys and the leverage he has can’t get the color of vehicle he wants …like Nori Green; had to settle initially for another color. This is crazy! TPS is a very flexible production system and is tailored to build exactly what the customer wants…. Not to push product at the customer with trim levels and options they don’t want. You can factory order a vehicle from Subaru and get exactly what you want. Why can’t Toyota do this for their customer? They can, but won’t. Shame on Toyota! And Toyota owns 20% of Subaru. Why is Subaru better? No excuse. Many Toyota dealers currently taking advantage of customers(MSRP) etc., hurting the brand, maybe factory orders like Subaru would help mitigate the dealer damage to the brand.
