A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician goes through a full technical review of the new 2022 Toyota Tundra. Including lifting the truck and looking at all key components and key changes to the new Tundra.
In this video we'll do a full 2022 Toyota Tundra Technical Review. Many Toyota owners and enthusiasts are excited about the complete redesign of the new 2022 Toyota Tundra and I hope this video gives you a glimpse of the real technical specs and what's going behind the scenes of the new 2022 Toyota Tundra.
First we'll start with the engine. We'll dive deep into the engine and look at all the key components from Mechanicals to Turbos to cooling system and more.
Then we'll lift the truck up and take a full tour of all major components like the Transmission, 4WD system, Suspension, Brakes, Steering and more.

Toyota build this truck base on cost effective Repairability where u other car manufacturer's not , this twin turbo idea came from Audi but to fix something in Audi is a nightmare.

Great review and I expect this will be more reliable than domestics. Bummer that it doesn’t have an equivalent AWD mode or recovery hooks but a more basic approach bodes well for long term reliability.

Don't get too excited about Turbo access as there are some reports of current Turbo Waste Gate Actuator issues on 3 to 4 hundred mile trucks. The entire Cab must be lifted off the frame so this issue can be resolved... serious stuff, look it up! 🙄

That was a joke right? They put almost no thought into this truck and it's a marketing scam The new Tundra is a complete embarrassment.. let's look at the non stop miss fires, short comings, sub par quality and poor design cues that run through this entire Truck. Toyota had 15yrs to work on this and failed in almost every way. They are marketing the truck as bigger but what Toyota doesn't tell you is that the interior was shrunk to worst in class, and in the larger transmission tunnel hump in the back seat exacerbates how small the interior has become. And why does it even have a tramsmission hump in 2022, every other truck has a flat loading floor for better hauling/storing/loading. So this is a major step backwards from the previous generation. Now all trucks have good windshield visibility but this one is worse then the previous generation and add in the turning radius got larger by 2.5ft they literally made the truck harder to manuerver in every environment from small urban parking lots to tight trails. Two more massive steps backwards. The new engines are subpar in multiple way. Gas mileage is almost no better than the current V8s so we got completely screwed there, AND the Toyota hybrid got bested by a year older Ford Hybrid, granted it was nominal but think about that, Toyota only upgrades powertrains every 15yrs, so they are charging a premium for a motor that is just average, and will be worst in class by 2024. So we got completely screwed there. And to add insult to injury, in the most off road capable Version TRD PRO, where weight and space is important when off road / camping, they only give you the heaviest engine option and stole all the storage space for outdated battery technology. Here was a prime example where Toyota could have been innovative and tried putting the batteries someplace different like Rivian did, or maybe be creative like RAM did with the power boxes built into the bed to provide more storage, but nope, they failed us there. And no tow hooks, so if you work in rough environments like some farms, industrial areas and or rural areas this truck wasn't really built to work. When it comes to the bed, the made it narrower and shorter than the previous generation, so we got less usability and functionality, just another massive step backwards. Then they put a laughable 400w inverter in the bed, which is damn near useless, but go buy a year older 2021 Sienna minivan and you get a very capable 1500w inverter. Just another point that shows Toyota wasn't really building a truck built to work. Its more about profit then building a quality functioning truck. Then egress/ ingress for the tail gate / bed is harder then the previous generation and now the hardest tail gate / bed to access of all trucks on the road, so that's another massive step backwards. The previous generation also had worst in class exterior/interior lighting, and it's still worst in class, how hard is it to fix basic lighting issues?? And why is payload almost no better then a 2008 Tundra? While I get they went coilover, but am I too believe that these are the best #'s they could get. The top payload is 1940lb, WTF?!? the tiny Ford Ranger has a payload of 1904lb on the top end and that's a small truck. When you look at the interior it's just another cabin full of miss fires and poor design. If you try to use the entry handle you will be shocked as it's soooo small the average size hand will not fit, in fact it will rip the skin off your knuckles, so it's useless, but we paid for it. They put the crawl control right where we all spill food/drink, so its gummed up in a yearvor so, yet they had a ton of dash real-estate to put it someplace functional, it's almost as if the guys designing the truck, had zero experience and understanding of trucks. The wireless charger struggles to keep the phone connected and if your running navigation off the phone it won't even charge it, so its just gimmicky junk used to fill a selling point. The slide on the console is pretty flimsy and you can tell it won't last long, and don't pull up on the seats as you might be shocked at how poor quality they are. The infotainment is not very intuitive and doesn't work well...and it's just keeps going and going and going Then when you look online there is an avalanche of people complaining about Window seals already coming apart, the side mirrors whistling at certain speeds, turbo waste gate issues, axles bolts coming loose, body panels and bumpers not lining up and having un even gaps, bad stitching on the seats, and a plethora of other sub par quality issues. It's sad how poorly the design and engineering is in this current version. Not sure why anyone would buy this con job of a truck.

Thank you for the info. I have a 2014 Tundra that I do not plan on getting rid of, ever. I was not really interested in the new Tundras at first, yes, I hated to see the V8 go, but evidently the automakers are going to let the US Government regulate them. So be it. With that said, I am extremely impressed with the mechanicals on this new truck. You have done an exceptional job of explaining the improvements, I dare say far better than anyone with Toyota or a Dealership salesman could ever dream of. You have educated yourself to the top level as usual. I would definitely buy one of these now that I have seen your video and heard your explanations. Fantastic review that addressed the two concerns most potential buyers of the redesigned Tundra have... 1) is the addition of turbos to get more HP out of less gas likely to harm reliability? 2) Did Toyota swing for the fences and go complex / high tech on everything else after stringing along the prior design so long? The answers seem to be definitive NOs. This design seems very bent on reliability and ease of maintenance. This bodes very well for those of us waiting on a redesigned 4Runner. I commend you for a well thought out video. I’m glad to not hear another pros and cons video, just the straight up information. Good job sir. I’m glad they thought out the turbos. I hade the 1st Gen, 3.5L eco-boost from ford… it was awful, I couldn’t drive it in heavy rains without in bogging down, and the badly engineered waste gate failed, and their recommendation was for me to drill a hole in the bottom to act like a drain hole…. The engine was replaced by them at 26,413 miles…. And that’s what led me to my 2018 Tundra, and I’ll never turn back. In a few months I’ll be ordering a TRD Pro, and you took care of my only concern… the turbos!

That was the best and most informative video, I have seen since the 3rd gen was released. I have a 2011 Tundra and it has been the best vehicle I have had the pleasure of owning. I am currently waiting for my 2022 Tundra. This video just made me even more excited to get it. Luckily I got to test drive one and although I’m gonna miss my dual exhaust and the v8 , I was very impressed with the power of the v35 and can’t wait to get mine. Thank You Thank You Thank You! When I learned the no more million-mile-with-no-repair 5.7 V8 was history in 22; I searched nationwide to find my very last Tundra this past November. Mission accomplished: so the owner of a former 2012, 2015, 2019 and now brand new 2021 Tundra is mucho happy. Your detailed review of the 2022 from the repair perspective, especially your description of the complexity of the twin turbo system put my mind at ease as to whether I shoulda bought a 2022. Ole V8 Tundra just sucks regular air into a regular port injection 8 cylinder Big Hoss of a motor - Rube Goldberg not required to generate Big Hoss power. I do regret not having the (finally!) crawl control the 2022 got, (had it on my 2014 FJ Cruiser), but the sublime simplicity of my Go Big Truck is what helps me sleep well at night long after the Toyota bumper to bumper warranty has expired. I humbly suggest the 5.7 Tundra will achieve the same much desired reputation that the venerated Hi-Lux did for the mid-sized Toyota Truck.

Well, that explains why the grille is so huge. That cooling system is intense. I'm very strongly looking at one of these to replace our '21 Silverado in a few years and this is promising.

Don't it absolute garbage and in many areas this truck went backwards Here is why I feel this truck is an absolute let down in almost every category except the torque rating in the new hybrid I-Force. And remember Toyota only does a major overhauls every 15yrs. Which is why by 2012-2013 the last Gen Trundra was becoming dated compared to other Trucks, so technically it's been outdated for the last 8yrs. When you objectively look at what this truck actually offers, it barely competes with 2020 models from the big 3. First, zero tow/recovery hooks? They literally have an off road package and countless people work on farms and or places where the terrain can be a problem. So it's not a question of if you get stuck, but when you get stuck. So clearly Toyota does not expect you to use your truck. Why is the payload so poor, the highest rating is around 1940lbs, and most trims it's closer to 1600, hell the Ford Ranger payload is 1904lb, and I get they went coilovers, but those have been around for decades, am I too believe they couldn't get better #'s, and this is a prime example of Toyota just getting current with 2020 models, nothing special or great here. Then there is the new V6, why is the gas mileage no better than the current V8s from Ford and Ram, the difference is nominal, so they fucked us there. Why does the most capable off road version loose all of its storage space in the cab to the batteries? When you're camping/off roading storage is a premium. Here was a prime opportunity for Toyota to be innovative in 2 different ways. First, they could have found a new place for the batteries, say under the truck/bed, maybe between the cab and bed?? Or get creative and design morage storage like RAM did with their power boxes built into the bed,or how about offering the basic V6 as a motor option? And they used old battery technology. Either way, zero innovation or creative was put into that area. How about the Tail gate being harder for egress/ingress then my 2011 model, and don't give me the bullshit mike sweers answer of " We didn't want to add complexity ". That's an utter lie, they added twin turbos to a motor and had to design extra cooling for it, that's the definition of complexity. Just another complete failure on Toyota's part. The last Gen has always had dim lighting in the truck, well guess what, it's still dark as hell inside the cab, apparently this was to tough for the engineers to fix. Why after all these years does that back seat still have the tunnel hump. Many people flip the seats up to store/haul/move more items around, and many of us have our dogs back there. It's a simple fix, but still too tough for Toyota to figure out I guess. The all new navigation is a train wreck and does not function well at all, even Toyota has semi had to admit it. Every one offers auto start, but Toyota wants a yearly subscription or they deactivate it, seriously? Why not just come out and say " We want to start ripping our customer bases off where ever possible" The interior feels more cramped even though it's supposed to be bigger inside. Why is the crawl control and 4wheel drive engagement right where we all spill our food and drinks, they had a ton of dash real-estate to put it somewhere that made more sense, but nope. Let's talk about how we lost overall dimension in the truck, it's now worst in class in front and rear head room as it shrunk from the last Gen down to 39.6inches. All the other Trucks are around 41 and up to almost 45. Hoq did Toyota also go backwards in turning radius, it worse now than before???? Toyota just went from best in class turning radius to worst in class. This truck is now harder to drive and navigate then the previous gen, so another step backwards here. How come the bed actually is smaller and not as deep, but supposedly the truck is bigger, more step backwards again. Or how about the seats not being comfortable, it's hard and doesn't sit well at least not if your over 6ft and 200lbs, it might be fine for smaller men possibly. Now I only drove the limited but the interior felt low quality and cheap, like I was in an economy car . Vents were loose, seats had stitching issues, the center console slide was flimsy and loose. Everything just felt like it was going to fall apart in the first 3yrs or so ( maybe it was just a lemon ) but it was bad enough I went to another lot and it seemed about the same ( both were in limited trims ). Why on the TRD PRO are we forced into those cheap plastic fender guards, then on top on top of that, they used some cheesy camo print, I'm not a 25yr kid, at least give me options on a 70k plus truck to look like an adult. And that plastic always fades real quick and inturn makes the truck look crappy, the cheap camo print just exacerbates that issue, and hell I don't want those cheesy cheap camo prints seat, WTF? How come the wireless phone charger can't keep the phone charged when the navigation is running, great job there by Toyota, they gave us a pointless charger. The bed has a 400watt plug?!? That will barely power some basic tools, but if you buy a Sienna mini van it's comes with a 1500 watt capable plug, are freaking kidding me? The mini van has a better inverter that their premiere work truck, that just absurd. I understand looks are an opinion, but Holy Tosh.0 it's obnoxiously ugly, the grill is so large the plastic looks like that cheap plastic used to hold your socket set you buy from home depot. And why so much chrome. That has not been popular for well over a decade, is the Toytota team that out of date?? The truck looks almost identical to a gmc from the middle of the front door and back, apparently taking time to design their own truck was too much, it was easier to rip off the work GMC put in. In person thevyruck feels weak and feeble.There are a few other things like visibility out the front window due the rake which makes it worse then the last Gen, and I could keep going but I'm sure you get the point. As a die hard Tundra guy who was going to buy new TRD PRO in 2019, I waited for the complete overhaul. It's sadly disappointing that we can't point to anything that outshines what's offered on 2020 models from the other manufacturers. Toyota literally just got current and barely does that. Essentially this truck is brand new but outdated already. Toyota should be completely embarrassed by this truc

@@zee9276 I know, and it breaks my heart. I wanted this truck to be great!! And I keep looking for things that will change my mind, but every time I find more things that are worse than before, or just a bit better but not good enough to compete with the big 3. We also now know the oh shit handle is super small and a normal size hand will struggle to use it, pay attention to that if you test drive one...it's all these little missed nuances that just make this truck a flop....I assumed I would always be a Tundra owner, but I literally have an appt this Saturday to buy a 2021 Ford F150 XLT Roush edition, and while I love the truck, I'm still struggling that it's not a Toyota...Fook me lol

@@xspower21 im just afraid that Toyota might start to take advantage of their reputation and start cutting corners in terms of providing less than they usually do. they have always been value to money and super reliable but after reading your observation, seems like even that is going backwards. Toyota for me is the last good thing standing but this Tundra does not paint a good picture at all!

“Super simple” makes me glad!! As a DIYer with a 2014 Tundra, I no longer fear the changes!! It does look like more room underneath to work on her. I will be interested to see reviews on towing…does she tend to sag in the rear with a loaded hitch requiring air bags for support and can you even install rear air bags with the new set-up??

Hi! You should be able to install bags in the springs. Probably will take some time for companies to come out with compatible products

some models comes with bags from factory. im a service advisor at toyota, and we just got a couple tundras in today...the sr5 model i saw had the tow package with air bags. im quite impressed with this truck. it looks promising.

The very last vehicle I did for Toyota PDI before I retired was the 2022 Hybrid TT. Very impressive technology and even though I'm sure Toyota really thought this through before sending it out to the general public, time will tell in the real world if they got it right. The test drive was interesting....loads of low RPM torque, but unimpressive to the V8 at the higher end. The ride is very nice , even for a large truck. Very smooth and solid feeling and amazingly quiet. I even broke one our strictest rules and stopped off at Burger King and ate in the truck in the parking lot playing with all the new gadgets. Sad to leave the automotive world and won't be able to see the new models first hand, but 44 years is long enough. That's why I like this channel, someone else can show me all the technical stuff on the new cars.

if we're talking about forced induction vs NA, then yes there is replacement for displacement. The blanket statement of turbo charged engines don't last as long is not entirely true, the longest lasting engine types are usually turbo diesels, and those run really high boost... it all boils down to engineering. The turbo 2JZ lasted forever, because it was well built. This engine was designed to be turbo charged from the beginning, and every variation is turbo charged, and if Toyota built it like they always have, it will last long.

Yet, another great review, Thank you AMD!! There are so many areas for aftermarket (or OEM) accessories (i.e Skid plate for under the transmission, transfer case, that open space that goes straight up to the sides of the truck bed - added storage etc.). That rear differential sure looked like the TLC/T100 rear diff except for the fluid drain now is on the driver side 😁. Finally about that battery location, that was the first thing I cringed when your opened the hood, with the hood opening only raises as wide as the structs will stretch (well, unless removed), I may just need to get an engine hoist to lift/replace that battery when the time comes 🤨. Anyhow, great video, review and truck 👍👍!

I also cringed when I saw a felt cover where a skid plate should be. This new truck is definitely not as heavy duty underneath as the outgoing version. The A-frames were much weaker. I was not impressed underneath the vehicle. That rear axle was the size of my 4Runner.

Toyota fan boys for sure. How wonderful it is. Faulty turbos and no tow hooks. Sounds like an urban legend. How much will it cost to change the turbos? Who cares. After all, it is a Toyota and it is perfect. It should last 1,000,000 miles.

Thanks AMD, for all the work you put in to give us this video, I'm sure you sincerely enjoy going through a redesigned vehicle to see how it works like the rest of us "car nuts." My 07's bed from underneath you can see all the way to the top of the bed, I think its a good thing because I live in Maine and I fluid film my truck every year, it helps to get the film up in there and in the spring you can really wash all the salt out of there to prevent major rusting in the wheel well.

Excellent review and video. If your have any problems as the engine ages you are definitely going to have to go back to the dealer for repairs. Engines are very complicated now. No more shade tree mechanics can repair these engines. Better buy the extended warranty! Engines were so much easy to work on in the 1990’s and early 2000’ s . It will get worst as we go to all electric vehicles
