Base model Cougar; you wanted a Mustang, but also wanted to put people in the back seat. XR7: a Cougar with delusions of becoming a Thunderbird when it grows up. It was interesting to learn which mechanical parts on my '68 differed from the 'Stang; rear leaf springs, dual exhaust, etc. The dash pads also differ, but are interchangeable. My brother's first car was the Maverick's stablemate, a 1974 Mercury Comet GT with a floor shifted manual backing up a 302.. You’re right that while they bear platform similarly with the Mustang, things aren’t an exact fit. It bought heavy anti sway bars from a popular Mustang parts retailer back in the late 80s. I got them in but wasn’t perfect. At least it still handled much better afterwards. I keep my eyes out for another 71 but haven’t seen something with taking home in my price range or skill level in a while.

Well my absolute fav car is still the 69/70 LTD. But as for paint its a huge investment. Right now I'm just about finished paint and bodywork on my 73 VW Campervan and I've easily got 500 hours and well over a grand in materials. I go weak at the knees thinking what that might have cost if I'd sent it to a paint shop. Thats why, a few weeks ago I was chatting with a buddy who has his eye on a late 70's E150, he wants to build a 70's style custom with a modern driveline. I suggested that he have it wrapped rather than paint, he doesn't want to do the patina'd look. And honestly I've seen several vehicles at shows with wraps and they looked great. One guy I spoke to recently with a B Series Mac said his was almost 7 years old and was still looking good. Another solution if you're feeling a bit more hands-on, is dipping. Now I know there a lot of people that hate it, but a buddys son did his mothers Miata years ago with a kit from DYC and again that thing still looks good. So there are alternatives if you don't want to go the patina rout.
