Having owned two of the 71 to 73 Cougars I found body and some interior parts are made from unobtainium. Learned that the hard way. 🤐 Would love to have a late 60s Mustang as it seems any part you need is available. But now they are a ton of dough for just a nice condition driver.

Base model Cougar; you wanted a Mustang, but also wanted to put people in the back seat. XR7: a Cougar with delusions of becoming a Thunderbird when it grows up. It was interesting to learn which mechanical parts on my '68 differed from the 'Stang; rear leaf springs, dual exhaust, etc. The dash pads also differ, but are interchangeable. My brother's first car was the Maverick's stablemate, a 1974 Mercury Comet GT with a floor shifted manual backing up a 302.. It upset him to learn that only 900 were made 😥, as our sister had destroyed it. 💔

My pecking order for the Galaxie is 1st: 63-64, 65-66, then l think it is a tie between 67-68 and 61-62, followed by 69-70, then 59-60, lastly 71-72 mostly due to the convertible and possibly the white lighting clone. 73-74 good luck.

Right except pieces like the floor pans in the rear frame rails are still not available period in those parts are the ones that are usually rusted on a Cougar. I had a 71 Cougar XR7. It was a more basic model with a 351C 2V and unassisted drum brakes all around. It was a rust bucket but it was fun while it lasted. You’re right that while they bear platform similarly with the Mustang, things aren’t an exact fit. It bought heavy anti sway bars from a popular Mustang parts retailer back in the late 80s. I got them in but wasn’t perfect. At least it still handled much better afterwards. I keep my eyes out for another 71 but haven’t seen something with taking home in my price range or skill level in a while.

I like slick paint, especially if its original. The problem, today, is most 60's-70's cars need so much work to get it slick, its cost prohibitive. There are many drivable cars out there that need paint and body, but aren't worth the investment. Unless its something rare, and a 65 Mustang coupe ain't rare, just get it mechanically sound and drive it. Thanks, again, for the video

Being an Aussie and loving old time utes including the F100 was a nice addition and yeah I know it’s a pickup think it’s sad we lost our Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon Utes which have been replaced by overpriced and diesel twin cab monstrosities. Have done my fair share of cars and bikes over the last 40 odd years and would actually love to do an F100. As far as patina goes I’m actually not a fan. If you’re spending a shitload building a car, truck or bike at least put in the effort and give a good quality paint job. Great video once again. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@AutoRestoMod To bad they didn't at least install a high performance 302 in both the Mustang II and Maverick. They had the parts to do it, It was just a matter of putting the parts together. A 289 cobra manifold and a set of 351 w heads would have woke the Mustang II up even with the emissions tuning it would have made a difference. the lack of performance was why the Mustang II got a bad rap.

@@AutoRestoMod AutoKrafters has lots of Comet parts. Just look for the Mercury silhouettes, eh? And some Falcon sheet metal is the same. Usually, if I have big trouble finding a part, it's a part common to both Falcons and Mustang (ex: throttle return spring on 200-6 with the 'throttle stabilizer' in your "Will Our Ford 200 Inline Six Run?" video. It's not the right spring on your 200-6 and it's the same on Mustangs, Falcons, Comets, et al. But just try to find one!). Ended up getting a 'kit' off eBay with a spring that has 75% of the coils and two stiff wire "extensions" to get the length right...

Well my absolute fav car is still the 69/70 LTD. But as for paint its a huge investment. Right now I'm just about finished paint and bodywork on my 73 VW Campervan and I've easily got 500 hours and well over a grand in materials. I go weak at the knees thinking what that might have cost if I'd sent it to a paint shop. Thats why, a few weeks ago I was chatting with a buddy who has his eye on a late 70's E150, he wants to build a 70's style custom with a modern driveline. I suggested that he have it wrapped rather than paint, he doesn't want to do the patina'd look. And honestly I've seen several vehicles at shows with wraps and they looked great. One guy I spoke to recently with a B Series Mac said his was almost 7 years old and was still looking good. Another solution if you're feeling a bit more hands-on, is dipping. Now I know there a lot of people that hate it, but a buddys son did his mothers Miata years ago with a kit from DYC and again that thing still looks good. So there are alternatives if you don't want to go the patina rout.

I got really lucky. My cousin did all of the restoration work on it from the ground up. He sold it to a mutual friend then the friend sold it to me. However the friend put on a Vintage Air system which is really nice, but when Mercury built the car they did not put on power steering. At my age I'm 66 power steering would be nice , but living in the South like I do. I'll take A/C everyday of the week. Now about the patina thing. I like it. The inside of both the Mustang and the F-100 has been completely restored. The outside is gonna be scuffed flat clear and I'm done. I can paint them I just don't want to. The Thunderbird is an absolutely gorgeous car that has a very small amount of parts available. And that's really sad because they are some of the prettiest cars for built

That beak is known as the Knudsen nose, like you say it ruined the 1970 cougar.

I think the high water mark for Mercury's cougar was 1969. The 70 was basically the same car but they just did a more thing to it

@@AutoRestoMod the Cleveland engine for 1970 was a big plus, but the Knudson Nose was giddy, Mercury went downhill after 1969.

I didn't go back into the fifties cars because that is an area that I'm really unfamiliar with and we don't have anyone that works in those areas for parts. AutoKrafters was invaluable on what we did on this.

Unfortunately, with the market being flooded with repop parts, it has really put a hurting on the over all car values. (Talking about Mustangs specifically). Plus the OEM parts are less sought after because the Chinese version is shiny and cheap. I personally would prefer original even if it has a little pitting in it and not perfect. Ok......I digress now. Lol

Does anyone know where I can locate a 67/68 fastback rear deluxe finned cover? I can't seem to find anyone with them in stock. I'd even take a used set because I will be color matching. If anyone has a lead, please let me know. I'm an idiot for not ordering them years ago.

Reproductions when obsolete a couple of years ago but even those things were pretty hideous. I don't know if anyone right now that is reproducing that panel. And that's kind of sad because I think it's a cool piece
