Bending and Flaring NiCop brake lines

If you could have heard me screaming at my monitor that you needed to get that red fitting to the other end, you wouldn't have had to rebend that first piece. It was good experience, though. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Sure wish I knew about nicop tubing about 20 years ago. I used stainless steel lines and my hands and arms hurt for days. They were a huge PITA to install.

I bought that little hand tool on Amazon for bending lines, but have used smooth bolt in vice to bend them too. Actually, the bolt in vice works better, lol

I just wrapped up two brake projects on mustangs. Used NiCopp on both. I ended up using AN fittings instead of double flare which cost a bit more, but has zero leaks to chase and looks great too.

Oh and another thing as I was watching and thinking about. The thing about YT and the way we do things, those Saturday morning TV shows and the real slick “professional” YT channels, they don’t generally show the mistakes that we know they make, they just show the build going slick, smooth and easy. Oh and a word to the negative comments, most times I’ll go look at their “channel” and they don’t produce videos, just negative comments. I also push back, 😂, I don’t put up with to much BS, they think they can do it better?? Show me.

I've just started renewing some steel brake lines using NiCop tube, I find it's much easier to both double flare and bend. I really like it. That engine bay looks so clean and fresh, good job!

Just did my brake lines and did that twice. Flare and no tube nut and bent with no tube nut on the correct end. Arrg!

I was first introduced to Ni-cop or as it was called back in the day, 'kunife,' back in the late 70's as a kid building my first car and have been using it ever since. But from what I recall it was invented either by or for the aircraft division of SAAB, the now dead Swedish manufacture for use on carrier based aircraft. Or at least that was the advertising back then.

As far as a good paint to use that closely matches the OEM color and sheen, I recommend Rustoleum Canyon River Black. It is an enamal paint that I beleive is more durable than a lacquer type paint. I have used it on my 66 Thunderbird with good results. I don't know about Mustangs, but the Thunderbird engine bay is painted the same color as the exterior. George B

It depends on the car.Most forwards in the midsize range and down were painted the semi flat black.

I just love the Satin finish on the firewalls etc and underneath the car. Looks so good! No drab flat or very shiny gloss, a nice in between.

little tip. for the small lines like this. I put thick weedwacker line inside it, once bent pull it out. you will NOT collapse the line that way.

When joining nicopp to steel lines, what material is best for the flare nuts? Is there a concern about dissimilar materials corroding (galvanic action)?

General, your fittings that Ford used back in the day were brass like the ones we are using. So I don't think there is a concern with galvanic issues.

Ni coop use to be Bundy Flex with the cooper on the inside but for advertising purposes it's the other way around and now you get steam punk.

IMO, Perfect install videos don't teach you The snags we run into. Snags in install process help us to understand issues that arise and how to overcome them. So thanks Jeff! Will be doing a rear drum to disc in a week or two and and adding a new distribution block with the NPD bracket under the Master.

If you use pliers to bend the lines use an old set. The twisting motion loosens the joint and harms their primary use…pliers.

We have one in the other shop. Are problem is is that the shop that we shoot the Mustang stuff in needs to be mobile. Meaning that everything we have in their needs to be able to move around so we can adjust for shooting. I've been noodling on a way to get advice on something big and heavy to put in there
