Hey Cap.. the White hot/black hot mode on the mavericks should just be a display setting. The missile is always looking for IR sources (hot things), and switching between white hot or black hot just inverts the black/white on the display for viewability/contrast reasons..

And ill just add my 2 cents in to confirm you are correct. We use a lot of thermals on the LAV in the Marines, It is just for visibility and contrast reasons changes nothing at all about the sensor. just how it is displayed.

EDIT: They changed the procedure (again!) slightly, so I have updated my checklist below. I think a lot of the confusion regarding Mavericks in the Harrier comes from the fact that there is both an "aft" and a "down" (depress) position on the TDC and the sensor select switch (SSS). You need both mapped to make it work. Here's a step-by-step formula for launching IR Mavericks using TPOD Assist. 1) Master arm on 2) AG mode selected 3) On STORES page, select IRMV (3 min spin up) 4) On other MFD, choose MENU, TPOD, STBY 5) DOUBLE PRESS SSS Down (not aft!) to make TPOD SOI 6) NWS/Undesignate to boresight TPOD (may take more than once--double-clicking usually works for me) 7) Steer airplane to put TPOD designator (octagon) near target. 8) Use TDC controls to slew onto target. 9) Choose desired mode (CCD/FLIR) 10) SSS AFT or OSB 15 on TPOD MFD to select PT (point track). 11) Press cage/uncage to unlock IRMV after cool down 12) DOUBLE PRESS SSS Depress to move SOI back to Maverick! 13) SSS Fwd to select IRMV (IRMV will be boxed on the HUD) 14) TDC down (not aft) to designate (IRMV reticle should close in) 15) Weapon release to fire 16) Watch bad guy go boom.

Finally, i think the one thing i was missing was step 14 as i finally got it to fire but it's still extremely unreliable, and they don't seem to get into range until around 6-7 miles at which point i might as well use any other weapon, using Mavs with the A-10 is fun but extremely frustrating on the Harrier.

TGM is the training variant. It's basically the same maverick missile minus the motor so it won't actually leave the rail.

As of July 2020 this only works if your uncaged screen is on the left MPCD. If its on the right, the Sensor Select forward button doesn't engage IRMV and you can't slew or lock onto a target.

Nice one, Cap. I have just got the harrier on DCS and working my way through the weapons. I have the Trident harrier for x plane 11, and happily the handling and start up is the same. So one less thing to figure out. I love this with the Oculus. Though several hours and I needed a wee nap 🤣.

have the same exact problem, no one seems to have it. tried asking on ed forums and reddit, I just met with extreme hostility. ED is just failing magnificiently and I wouldn't be surprised if they went bankrupt in 2021.

When you uncage the mav, make sure it says IMAV instead of INS. That seems to be a common problem

I’m really late to answer this but you actually need to turn on auto lock by going to the main menu in DCS then going to the AV8-B tab then selecting “Use easy mode TDC”. That setting makes the missiles auto lock.

Right, you don't "warm up" IR guided missiles like the Mav, you're cooling the seeker head so that it can more clearly see the IR heat generated by various objects. Otherwise a good instructional vid.

Hi! I have problems launching the IR Mav Foxtrop, but before chaning from IR Maverick Golf to Fox I could launch without any problem. Is the any important change in the launch procedure? Thanks in advance

@@grimreapers yes, the same procedure that with Type Golf. I never have this problem with Golf and all my squadron have the same problem. I usually warn it just after take off and try to fire it 30 minutes later, but I do not think this could be the problem.

Try doing it twice, the first push should select INS, the second push goes to mav if mav is available :)

Has much changed since this post? I recently got the Harrier in a sale but still find the price extortionate for an incomplete product. I had previously thought X Plane aircraft to be expensive but they are cheaper and more complete. Hmm. I’m still really enjoying my first DCS module though. Just trying not to think of the price.

I tried this and missiles won't fire or lock. Also camera is dark can't see anything clearly. I ended up just dropping an iron bomb on the target. Crude but simple and effective. lol

look at the date. two years ago. stuff changed
