Survival Horror is more a game of decisions. You have to decide when it's time to fight and when it's time to run away. You have to decide what is worth taking up room in your inventory. You are always making decisions in survival horror games. Non-Survival horror is a game where you do not make decisions. Like in Dead Space, as if there is any choice other than killing everything in front of you. I like Dead Space a lot, but its "action-horror" not "survival-horror". You don't feel like you're 'surviving' the game.

Dead Space is one of those moments where you catch lightening in the bottle by combining the best aspects of games before it, but instead of being a pretender, solely mimicking and becoming a Resident Evil 4 clone, it became so much more than just that. It was a pinnacle of Sci-Fi horror, taking inspirations from Event Horizon, Alien, The thing and to think that this game first started as a System Shock 3 project is mind boggling. This franchise is amazing and it is a shame that the third installment strayed away from its roots, It is comparable to the first three Alien movies.

Dead Space is one of the best games ever made. It did what Capcom and other developers were unable or unwilling to do with horror games post RE4. Not only it managed to improve RE4's basic gameplay formula, it also pulled off an interesting story with amazing atmosphere where even gamey things such as the hud, the inventory and the waypoint are seamlessly integrated in the game world. I set up the necromorph blade horizontally and throw it at their kneecaps but it just bounces off, the necromorph does a little stagger and keeps coming. I think I managed to cut off a limb from a necromorph by throwing a blade at it once, but even then I had softened that body part with a few plasma cutter shots. Actually I think that a thrown blade is the equivalent of an unupgraded plasma cutter shot, since you have to repeat many times on one limb to cut it off. So not very useful, even for saving ammo.

Both styles worked well for the theme and were fun, some just got angry at this shift I suppose, maybe acting a bit too purist.

survival horror games force you to survive based on what is provided to you, while action horror games progressively give you options in the game to keep you engaged in the actions while still providing horror elements. games like outlast you'll spend more time going " why cant i do this" " why cant i just pick up a weapon and fight the monsters" or " why does my character run like he's 200 pounds overall" just simple examples of how survival horror games force you to stick to the narrative that your rarely able to defend yourself, whereas action horror games like dead space and re4 allow you the ability to combat the horror with new weapons, ways to kill, while also pacing the horror elements, adding new new monsters the oversimplification extends not just to games, people say friday the 13th and nightmare on elm street are HORROR movies but they actually slashers/thrillers, but now as long as you get scared in a movie they put the " horror" label on it, people go see a movie and they go " i was more shocked then horrifed, it was BAD horror movie" but in reality it was actually a thriller/slasher
@OSW4 жыл бұрын
@@bennefib thanks for the explanation! A winner is you
@sheaedwards4 жыл бұрын
@@bennefib I disagree with the sentiment that slasher movies aren't horror. Horror is a huge, broad genre, and slashers most certainly fit into the genre, categorizing them with thrillers is entirely inaccurate. A thriller would be a movie like Joker, where it's violent, tense, and dark, but you're not necessarily supposed to be afraid, just on the edge of your seat, almost excited for the next shocking thing that happens next. Slashers are essentially just watching people try to defeat a near unkillable serial killer. A movie like Se7en wouldn't be counted because the actual murderer does not have an active presence in the plot even though they do have a direct effect on its events, as compared to Halloween where Myers is front and center in the plot and the horror of the film rather than seeing the aftermath of his rampage and trying to figure out his motivation. Thrillers are movies in entirely different genres with horror aspects in them, slashers are a subgenre of horror just as much as a psychological, body, or supernatural horror movie would be. Most people who aren't avid watchers of the genre or had no definition of it would say "I was more shocked than horrified", but horror IS just any movie/game that is intended to spark dread and fear in you without making it something you're actively hyped for like a tense car chase in an action movie. One causes anxiety, the other causes excitement, and I think that's the main difference. Action-horror is still horror because every encounter is anxiety-inducing, but the difference between action and survival is that you eventually gain the means to combat the horror as it builds with you. RE4 could be both fun and terrifying, whereas I'd fail to explain the fun in a game like Silent Hill 3 or RE2 (although I'm sure some people could the same way people could find joyous excitement in, say, Alien). Those are just my thoughts on the differentiation, I know a genre as broad as horror can be pretty interpretive though.

Well said. Same thing can be said for RPGs. Everyone has their own opinion of what makes an RPG based on their first or most favorite RPG game. It's a never ending debate.
@Jes91192 жыл бұрын
The idea of survival is directly related to being in constant need of supplies or being fucked if you run out. I've played all three of these games to completion and in every one I was constantly dropping either ammo or health kits to be able to pick up ammo or health kits. If I'm dropping something necessary then it's not a survival situation. In a survival situation you would never drop something you need. Even in Resident Evil if you put away ammo or health items to pick up a key item, it's always temporary, you always return to get it and in Dead Space this is not the case. Enemies drop items in such abundance that you never run out unless you suck at aiming because the only reason you'd ever run out of either item is due to missing shots and taking unnecessary damage. In this case that is a you problem. He's absolutely correct by not calling this a survival horror. If anything it's more of a horror game with action elements, which is the opposite of what Resident Evil became between 4 and 6.

@@Jes9119 2 months late, but I would like to point out that, just as op has said, the precise definition of genres is subjective, and your idea of Survival Horror is indeed that. For example, in my personal opinion, "Survival" involves resource management rather than having a general lack of resources. To me, Dead Space is stuck in this weird spot between Survival Horror and Action Horror, but I think this actually works in it's favor and makes it unique.

Every aspect of the sound design is second to none, and the ambient noises emitted from the Ishimura really, really kept you immersed and on edge from being in this giant and lonely, threatening space. Also its funny how Mirror's Edge games were criticized for making the world's story telling about collectibles and knowing more only if you were searching for documents, bags and security recordings. I love that games make you to work for yourself if you want to know more about the world around you. Games are to be played in the end, not movies to be watched.
@6ixlxrd3 жыл бұрын
Survival horror isn’t technically about the horror itself, but the varying means and intricacies of resource management which revolve around surviving the horror. Its core gameplay loop centers around an almost puzzle-like gameplay which entails managing resources, navigating areas of a map, possessing environmental awareness of said map thanks to the constant threat of enemies, choosing weapons (and changing them based on enemy types, enemy weaknesses, and/or environmental hazards), managing ammo for said weapons, managing upgrades for said weapons at the cost of resources which could be alternatively used for different purposes (such as upgrading your character), being frequently forced into unavoidable conflicts you have no choice but to “survive” against (one of the *primary* driving features of the genre; it’s not always a survival horror if you can CHOOSE which battles you go into…what you choose is how to approach and tackle the enemies presented before you based on your weapons, ammo, and resource availability). I could go on. Left 4 Dead is a survival horror game. The Evil Within. Alien: Isolation. Outlast. Dying Light. Silent Hill. All survival horrors. Yet, each and every one of those games is variously different from one another, if for no other reason than “survival horror” being one of the most flexible genres out there (it’s not as stale, rigid, and one-tracked as you believe). Despite their differences, fundamentally, they are all the same. They all promote resource management, environmental awareness, choice of approach to conflict based on resource availability, an inventory, etc. Some are open-world. Some are linear. Some have stealth mechanics. Some are straight action. Some allow you to run from enemies. Some force you to fight or die to them. But the core fundamentals between each are almost identical. So I disagree. Dead Space is survival horror.

@SatansLeadGuitarist4 жыл бұрын
Since you have such a specific definition of what Survival Horror is, does that apply to other genres as well? is a game not really an RPG if it doesn't follow D&D rule sets? is a game not really an FPS if it doesn't play and have mechanics just like doom? My point is that genres evolve over time. These days its genres are almost meaningless as most games mix in elements of other genres, so we dont really have many pure FPS games anymore. Most of them have some kind of RPG mechanics or open world gameplay, but they are still first person shooters. Just because something doesn't look or play exactly like the first game in the genre doesn't mean it cant still be a part of the genre. All that being said, i still love your content and cant wait to see the rest of the Dead Space Retrospective.
@AvalancheReviews4 жыл бұрын
This is copy pasted from another comment because it fits here too. It's not my definition though. I default to the game the coined the term. I think it's fair the game that created the genre gets to define it. Static camera angles, non linear exploration, but not quite open world. Limited inventory. Backtracking in order to collect key items which open up more of the play area, leading to more backtracking. Combat that is both dis incentivized, and not rewarded. I know that sounds like the same thing, but it isn't. Combat has to be detrimental enough, that avoiding it becomes not only possible, but optimal, and downing enemies can't supply you with any extra resources, beyond the benefit of not having that enemy in your way any more. A hard emphasis on puzzle solving and a near adventure game approach to design. Survival horror games are giant puzzles, that sometimes allow you to engage in combat. Every decision from where to go, to what to take with you, needs to be a piece of that puzzle. These decisions need to be available, and they need to rewarded/punished accordingly. Taking too many health items, means not picking up that key item. Taking the short cut, means passing by that enemy that's hard to kill and that means, deciding on whether to spend ammo killing it, or health items dodging it. Pretty much.........just take RE1. If an element in "X" game is present, but not in RE1, that's ok. I like additions to the formula, but if a feature is present in RE1, and not "X: game, it's probably not survival horror.
@1000rogueleader4 жыл бұрын
@@AvalancheReviews That's way too restrictive and also just asinine. As Neil said, genres evolve and their definitions will change and shift over time. Some things that were in RE1 (like the camera angles) were completely incidental to the product and more a result of technical limitations that limited the games at the time. Nobody would say that Super Mario Galaxy wasn't a platformer just because it isn't a 2D 8-bit sidescroller like the original Super Mario Bros. If Resident Evil had been made in first person (as it was originally planned to be), you would be saying the same thing about any horror game that wasn't in first person. Even more to the point, when Resident Evil was made, Capcom didn't set out to create a new genre of horror; it just kind of morphed into being that in the popular consciousness, just like Spaghetti Westerns was more of a pop culture term created to define a specific subset of westerns made in Italy, and only became something of an ill-defined sub-genre of westerns with time. Not everything that was in RE1 was integral to it being survival horror. So what was? Its in the name: Survival: Focused on the survival mechanics, like the management of limited health and resources. Horror: Its a horror story. That's it. That's the only requirements of being a survival horror game. Now, is Dead Space survival horror? Don't know, haven't played it. That being said, it does seem to be an action horror game only because the survival elements seem to be minimal and there is more a focus on shooting everything, turning the game into a shooting gallery. Everything else though, is secondary to those basic aspects.

Played this for the first time in August this year and man does this game hold up well. One more observation I made is how well they translated Isaac's engineering suit. The controls are just sluggish enough to feel the sheer weight of the suit without feeling too slow. It's quite genius if you think about it, it created that similar feeling you get from tank controls while still having full maneuverability. It really hits that tiny sweet spot. And it only gets better when you keep upgrading it, making it look more and more strong and mature as you mentioned. Having a fully maxed out gear at the end made me feel like a destroyer of worlds, only for me to get wrecked with even more challenging enemies and bosses.

What a game!! The lore of the creatures in The Suffering is brilliant and the multiple endings was great as well! @@Dan-df1kb True, and I don't even dislike it myself, but also agreed, the story you make in your head is usually better than when they show you. That second movie though, dear lord that cheap CGI. I've legit never finished it just because of how bad that looks. Someday I really need to though.

For me there are differences in the game design between "Horror" & "Survival" Horror & "Action" Survival Horror. Here it is: Horror genre: it's more about how you escape/avoid the horror/nightmares that you encounters to pushed forward. You can defend yourself a more active manner or even just simply no defensive design at all. Survival Horror genre: It's more about "how you approach" the horror encounters, to survive, to push forward, all within the limitations that you must manage it in wise-manner, whether it's active or reactionary, aggressive or defensive, & so on. Action Survival Horror: It's about how much "aggressive" you are when encounters the horrors. Your "actions," as in particularly your skills with aggresive actions matters the most to push forward.
