#Daymare1998 has been hyped up as the return of survival horror to modern gaming lately, and you guys know I am the hardest fan of the genre to please. So can an Italian independent game developer bring back the late 90's Resident Evil feel? Let's find out!!

It was a very wise choice to get your feet wet on the PC which allows for much deeper customization than a consul. I bought the game and there are some great old-school classic survival horror ideas in there that can absolutely be developed for future content or the next outing. Along with Them And Us, it is great to see the slow resurrection of a truly horrific and enjoyable experience with thought-provoking puzzles and the evolution from scarce resources to reaping the rewards of conservation while experiencing real power from having overcome challenges.

I can only speak for myself but what made the voice acting difficult to perform was having to match to pre-recorded facial mo-cap performances by other actors I believe may not have spoken English as a first language. I know myself and at least one other actor are native English speakers, midwesterners in fact. While unable to act out the character as I personally would have preferred if I'd been able to from scratch, I'm proud of the work we did given the less than ideal recording process. I think the take-away here is the person who does the mo-cap really also needs to be the voice actor but Invader Studios is a fledgling Italian indie developer and flying English actors overseas to plug into mo-cap gear was too costly. Invader Studios are a wonderful team and working with them was a total thrill. I got to interact with both Paul Haddad (RE2 1998 Leon) and Nick Apostolides (RE2 2019 Leon) thanks to them, which was just legendary for me as a survival horror freak since RE1 dropped on PS1. I think Invader's sophomore effort will be even more badass and I sincerely hope to be a part of it. They are super humble and have been very open to using criticism to grow. Great guys. Thanks for reviewing the game in such thoughtful and honest detail. - Agent Liev

Nice read. It's actually situations like this that led to the voice acting situation and therefore resultant voice acting in the survival horror classics like RE and House of the Dead 2 (not that I'd really call the latter survival horror, but I think it's part of the same phenomenon in this case), which have ironically become near and dear to the hearts of many fans. People don't love Barry Burton and his voice acting ironically, even though the results weren't technically good; we all seriously _love_ Barry Burton and Barry Gjerde. We _love_ the Jill Sandwich line and we _love_ 'what is this'. We do. And if it had been attempted artificially here, it would probably have been obvious that it was forced, so in a weird sort of way, I'm really glad that the experience was positive for you and that the results look promising to someone that loves the results of low-budget horror endeavours. For me, 'He's going there, and then he'll BE there,' is already an absolute classic and I can't wait to play the game that contains it. Good luck with everything.

@@Gaff. Yeah, I almost mentioned we have a weird recording process to thank for the hilariously bad voice acting in RE1. I've heard those voice actors in other games and they're unrecognizable. I don't recall exactly what went down with RE1 but something to do with a Japanese voice director and an editor Frankensteining together takes to make for really bizarre inflections and delivery. However, the voice actors themselves get all the heat for sounding like space aliens. But you're right, I'd rather live in a world with "The Master of Unlocking", "Jill Sandwiches" and "Take this... it's especially effective against living things", then a world without. Thanks for the reply.

I got this game for review, but I couldn’t get into it because of how janky the animation and game flow were. When I got to that first boss zombie in the lab, I was hyped to see how the boss was going play. Once it started jogging at me like a normal human man, and flailing it’s arms around, I started cracking up but was also extremely disappointed. What you said about the lack of transitional animation is probably the worst thing about this game’s flow. You never know when hits will land, and you’re melee attack looks like it’s phasing through enemies most of the time. The graphics and aesthetic are great, but often times it feels like that’s what’s holding back a polished gameplay experience. I’d much rather have an indie game that tried to emulate the flow and polish of original REs instead of trying to achieve the visual quality of modern RE. Also that inventory menu needs to open faster. If the devs can polish up the animations I might give it another try. Anyway great video!

Thanks! I can't say I disagree with you. It is incredibly janky, especially that first boss. I chessed my way through him with like 80 melee strikes. I did find a lot of enjoyment in other elements though. I think the graphics probably were the main focus, and they could have definitely gotten away with a less intensive look. Maybe a modern low poly look could have given them more time and energy for the little things.

Surprised you didn't mention the fact that this game started as a fan project RE2 remake, before Capcom told them to quit because they were doing their own (it was practically the first we'd ever heard of REmake2, even predating the WE DO IT t-shirt) This entire gem of a game is the byproduct of a dev team not wanting to give up on what they already had, so instead opted to make a new IP entirely
@H0und0fHircin3
@H0und0fHircin3 4 жыл бұрын
Capcom didn't tell them to quit. They informed them they were making the RE2 make then invited them to see an early build of it and cross referenced designs and concepts and mechanics. They changed it in respect to Capcom. They were also in the RE2make credits.

There was another team who did a far better remake remaster and crapcom told them to shut down production, very soon after these italian self proclaimed fans who troughout the years just proved their failure of understanding the originals, started to do the same but it didn't look anything remotely like a actual RE2 game. Then again got red flagged by crapcom so they decided to work on a new game instead while they just pretty much continued where they left off. The first team actually had a almost complete RE2 game in their hands but still completely stopped erased all traces to them because they didn't wanted to get sued by crapcom and second they moved on to some other projects which are far more serious then a RE2 Remake and these italian guy's shitty attempt called a game. Throughout the years there were far more better fan made RE games and mods available for free then what crapcom could ever deliever and milk it to death. They worked so hard to close down all fan made projects possible just so they can milk this shit to death. At first I do understand because it's their intelectual property but if you fail to deliever something bring in those fans and implement their work into a official game. But no, it's easier to be idiots and play the victims later on and go to the lenght of saying how people are not interested into survival horror as in before. Well no, we are but not in their failed attempts of survival horror or what ever they think they are doing.

Great review. However you didn't once mention the fact that this was originally supposed to be a fan remake of RE2 before production was stopped when Capcom decided to "do it". This explains some of the more obvious references and perhaps also the lack of consistency in the story, as it was basically wrapped around the assets which were already built at the time. Nevertheless, I'm also looking forward to this as it seems pretty promising to me. Yeah it's kinda rough around the edges but from everything I've seen so far, I would love to see what the developers would come up with in a sequel with all they've learned from this one.

This started as a fan made REmake2, before Capcom told them not to... Seeing as they had to rework all they had into an entirely new game with unique environments, story, lore, characters and monsters, when Capcom already had all of that groundwork ready for them to revamp, it's actually quite amazing to me how close to release both titles are! Based on when REmake2 began development shortly after the "We Do It!" announcement, it was almost like they were both on the starting line to make a new survival horror game!

a few of the voice actors in this game have been around for decades and they are fluent english and are your typical go to cheap actors. they can only say the lines and not improve them like a movie actor. overall I love this game. I always wanted a more zombie only RE 2 style of game and daymare was no let down in this regard. if they could have improved the writing in places and made the soundtrack a symphony like RE outbreak file 2, then this would be a solid winner. I give this game a firm "buy it" for finally expanding such a niche and untapped area of zombie survival horror that RE never touched. As a 90s kid who always want this, thank you devs of daymare. Solid and fair review Avalanche. also could you imagine if daymare had outbreak's intro? omg it would be amazing. I may be having this just to support the developer. I’m not even sure i’m going to play it until the end, but i can see the love they put into the genre & for their 1st outing, this is really good. They don’t have the budget & resources like capcom, but i want to see them making more games with all the feedback they receive. It will be easier the second time. It actually reminds me of a game called “dreadout” years ago. Check it out if you never heard of it. Maybe its not really into your liking because it was more inspired by fatal frame, but maybe you’ll enjoy it more than you’ll expect to, as long as you come with low expectations.

Yes the fixed cameras give it a cinematic feel but im playing a survival horror game to be scared and have challenge, and fixed cameras arent the only way to do that, 3rd person over the shoulder camera actually leaves room for a lot of sares as it is seen in re2, its scary to not be able to see whats in the next corridor but irs just as scary to know you are in control of your sight and you could find something behind you

The one voice actor for Liev sounds like Steve Blum (actually a voice actor from the OG RE2 plays The Cleaner here). I also love the relationship Invader Studios and Capcom had with one another. What I hate about nowadays, is how " 3rd Person shooters cannot be Survival Horror ". At least that's the impression I get from what others say. But games like Dead Space did it right (not so much 2, definitely not 3. But 2 did have good blend of Action Shooter / Survival Horror).

Thanks for the review! Tbh my playthrough was riddled with game breaking glitches and bugs, walls disappearing, puzzles becoming impossible to solve, and even roads being blocked with no reason, for which the only solution was to delete the save data and start over. Since patches didn't solve the issues I had, I sadly gave up on the game :(

One thing you didn't touch on that was an odd choice by the devs was the lack of an RE style save system. Playing on Daymare mode at least should've featured this. I really had cassettes and recorders or even cd-roms in my head when thinking about how this game would be.

Dev told me their hoping to get physical copies for Daymare on consoles. I'll wait for those to appear. Really wish they'd just focus on the Hunk type character. @Avalanche Reviews, I was glad to hear that too. Owning a physical copy is nice. Yeah, Capcom is probably going to cease and desist the fan Dino Crisis remake. But, maybe Capcom will finally give us a proper remake or new Dino Crisis. Was really hoping for a surprise announcement at Tokyo Game Show 2019, but alas, nope. TGS 2019 was pretty cool though. They focused on games and catering to their core audience. Unlike a lot of Western gaming cons now. Just look up what stuff PAX has planned. And now E3 2020 sounds like it is going to be even worse cringe fest than 2019's. I'd like to go TGS one day.

I was wondering if this would be the best place to ask since I'd like to believe we're all survival horror game fans here. Has anyone played Deadly Premonition? They announced Deadly Premonition Origins for switch and it caught my attention but I can't seem to find much info on it. Anyone recommend it?
@cloister5613
@cloister5613 4 жыл бұрын
I've played through Deadly Premonition twice once on 360 and then again last year with the Directors cut on pc. I would recommend it overall. It is one of the most unique gaming experiences and has stuck with me. The characters are interesting and the game has lots of quirky moments and charm. There are a few sequences that really impress like when you are being stalked and the enemies have very disturbing audio. It's also endlessly quotable. On the downside it's got playstation 2 level visuals generally and the game play is very clunky. The pc version is also very unstable and I had numerous crashes including one that required a downloaded save game to skip the cutscene that was triggering it. The switch version from what I've read isn't a great port and currently has a sound issue that is awaiting a patch.

I've only played the demo, but you sounded too critical IMO. This doesn't surpass the classic RE games, but it looks way better than a few main titles and a lot of spinoff REs. Regarding dialog, dude, have you played RE1? It's terrible as well. Maybe without mistakes, but the awful delivery makes it even better, and to me, it's the same case here. English is not my main language, but I've noticed what you mean, even in the demo, but I like the B movie dialogue/atmosphere. Also, I felt that you could've mentioned that we have pretty much these devs to thank for RE2 Remake, they get a lot of sympathy points from me. All things considered, it's obviously not a AAA and I never expected to be the "return of survival horror",but loved what I've seen till now. Buying when I get home tonight.
@AvalancheReviews
@AvalancheReviews 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right. I was pretty hard on it, but I tend to judge survival horror games pretty harshly. RE 1 does have janky ass voice acting, but that came out in an age where we had just started getting video games with voices in em. I don't get the feeling they were emulating that. It just feels like an accident here. Which like I said in the video, isn't a deal breaker, but I did have to mention it.

First time seeing your review s. This is a very detailed review of a game genre that captivated me way back in the day on PS1. I will most definitely pick this up after some patches are added. I dream of a Resident Evil game that begins in Raccoon City before the outbreak starring the S.T.A.R.S members, and local law enforcement. I loved many of the street level locations from RE2 and RE3 but there were way too many interesting looking buildings you couldn't enter. Think of a Skyrim sized detailed map of Raccoon City and the surrounding mountains that can be fully explored. What was life like in Raccoon City days leading up to the first case of an infected person going to the hospital ? I just feel that there are tons of individual stories in and around Raccoon City that haven't been told that should be. I'll play this hopefully 🎃Halloween🎃 night during my🎈horror video game marathon ‼

Were you unaware that invader games was the group behind RE2 Reborn? It was a fan made remake of RE2 that got canned when capcom began development of the real RE2 remake. This game is like Resident Evil because it was supposed to be.
@mizurazu2500
@mizurazu2500 2 жыл бұрын
But it's not like they got very far into the process of RE2. Barely made parts of the police station using a lot of Darkside Chronicles assets and animations. It doesn't seem to me that the progress they made on reborn was at any stage where it acted like a baseline that was molded into Daymare. So to me it seems more like this game is like Resident Evil because the devs wanted it to be and not because their progress on RE2 Reborn locked them into that direction.

Does this have any relation to the Italian devs that were making the unofficial RE2 remake? It looks very similar and the last I heard was Capcom flew them out to the headquarters. And of course we know Capcom came out with the offical RE2 remake.
