What I loved about O'dimm is that he was literally just an ordinary dude in a tavern that gives you a lead on Yen and you pay absolutely no mind to him later; you thought there was something off but eventually you just forget and brush him off as an ordinary man. O'dimm was the first and only "antagonist" in a game, movie or book that I genuinely feared. It's a strange felling because I wasn't scared of him as a character per say but the though of who or what he was was truly terrifying for me. In my opinion he is one of the best "antagonist" in fiction with just the pure emotion that he causes in you outside of the story he is part of.

To me what really made the whole villian is that it is never exactly clear what Gaunter O'Dimm even is. Geralt suspects he may be a form of powerful Djinn or Demon, but it is never explicitly clarified. I liked that. This is one of those questions that is better when left unanswered.

Agreed! Although all signs pretty much point to the Witcher’s take on Satan walking among us. He was inspired by the man in black from the Stephen King universe and also from a polish folktale of a man making a deal (pact) w the devil. Gaunter takes on various forms, controls time and reality, is amused by human kind and curious, he’s “devilishly” charming but you know there’s something ominous w him. He is Satan having a grand ol time playing w humans’ morality and collecting souls out of boredom.

Agreed, better left unanswered. I’ve seen people who say GoD should be the main villain in the next game and, while I get wanting more of GoD, that would be a horrible idea. He should be left as-is. Subtle references and stuff towards GoD in any future games would be good but ruining the mystique behind him would not.

if we assume Vlodimir was telling the truth, then the consent the women supposedly give is still ambiguous: their home was pillaged, and these women had no fighting ability, and if these strangers who are pillaging and occupying their home are insistent in seducing the women, wouldn't they then relent out of fear of being harmed if they didn't give in to their occupiers' advances? *coercion isn't consent either* also, considering Vlodimir's behavior at Shani's friend's wedding, it leaves little to the imagination in that his "way with women" was to constantly insist on having her share a bed or "a roll in the hay" with him

What I love about the story of HoS is that there is so much nuance to both antagonists Olgierd dor one was never a good person. But part of that wasn't by choice, as Vladimir said, the Von Everec family has been raiding for generations. Its the only life he ever knew. But when he met Iris he tried to change and even cut all ties with his family. But when things went downhill he went to O'Dimm. And I wanna stress this: Olgierd went to O'Dimm , not the other way around and formed a contract who's long term effects he couldn't predict. He lost his brother his emotions and eventually Iris as well , not due to the contract but due to falling into a downward spiral cause by it indirectly But thats the thing. We don't know how much of all that wa actually O'Dimm's fault. He's basically the devil, yes, but we also know he doesn't lie. He omits details and its implied that he is always behind the scenes manipulationg events for amusement. But in the end he follows his deals through to the letter and never actually lies to Geralt, he simply refuses to answer. Which is another interesting thing. As his namesake of Master Mirror suggests, he mirrors the thoughts and behaviours of the peopls he deals with. With Geralt he's respectful and straight forward, with Shani he's polite and corteus. But with the random drunk he's monstrous (casualy showing a spoon in his eye) and with Olgierd he's snarky and slightly narcissistic He's a walking enigma, the biggest unanswered question in the entire game and series and it just makes him all the more terrifying, especially since his presence and effect on the world can be felt even after be beat him in Blood and Wine
@lukeroberson2115
@lukeroberson2115 2 жыл бұрын
I believe Olgierd is a man haunted by guilt, and his spiral is caused by the contract itself. First of all, it turned his heart to stone, so he felt nothing for his wife. But I think part of it is guilt. O'Dimm made him choose to sacrifice something for his riches and such so he could marry Iris. He gave O'Dimm his brother, and deeply regrets his choice.

The strange man is hard. It’s possible to consider him Satan. It seems like he has something to do w/ the occurrences in armadillo in red dead 2, and that Herbert moon had made some sort of pact with him. Also, one could argue the Strange man missions in the first game were a form of temptation for John: thanklessly be a good guy or be a bad guy. But there were only 2; the third meeting was just a cut scene. Also when John said “damn you”, he said “many have”. Also it’s possible he’s just the grim reaper. He calls himself an “accountant, of sorts”. That would suggest he’s not any sort of malevolent spirit, he’s just here to meet the recently deceased.

The collecting soul part was meant to happen in "Rome". Twardowski thought he was smart...until he decided to spend night in an Inn called "Rome". You clearly saw this part in the game with "standing on the moon". In the poem "Pani Twardowksa" (Mrs. Twardowska) the wizard gave three tasks to the devil. First one was a multi-parter:bring to life a horse in the Inn's emblem, make a whip out of sand and build a house out of walnuts, nailed with poppy seed with a thatched roof made of Jews's beards. Second was to bathe in a bowl of holy water. Third was to live and love Twardowski's wife for a year. Needles to say-the devil fled through a keyhole and does so to this day.

He's definitely one of the most smartly written antagonists in video game history. He's also known as Master Mirror because he often makes deals with people in ways to torture them by giving them what they wish for in a way that exposes them for their shortcomings as horrible people. That the game doesn't feel the need to beat the player over the head with that information just shows how CDPR respected the intelligence of their audience. You don't see much of that these days.

Yeah, it made me wonder if the entire Witcher universe is just dictated by O'Dimm trying to get the soul's of people he's made deals with. I think it was Thronebreaker that made me theorize this. There's a random encounter with a victim of O'Dimm that reveals a contract made by a mage claiming it would only be fulfilled "when the golden sun rises over Rivia in the dead of night." So Nilfgaard invading Rivia at night, fulfills that demand. Therefore O'Dimm manipulated events for the invasion of Nilfgaard JUST to capture that mage's soul...

"CD Projekt Red made an effort to make every evildoer multifaceted." Eredin: "Hold my five lines of dialogue." Jokes aside, this was a great video. Another thing that I think made Gaunter O'Dimm so good was the pacing of his powers. This is obviously a part of his mystery aspect, but I love how the game slowly lets slip just how powerful it is, and it's only towards the end of the DLC that he shows just how powerful he really is.

The pacing of how powerful and twisted O'Dimm really is meant you were fearful of him when he performed his spoon trick, with each time you met he became more and more of a threat you wouldn't be able to fight, whereas from the off you knew the witches were trouble. They are very similar in how they twist people's wishes, the witches take Anna and force her to look after the children they would end up eating, while Gaunter confines a blinded Shakeslock to a chalk circle promising he is safe as long as he remains within it. Gaunter is more playful with his twisting of words as it all seems to be more personal entertainment for him as he travels from location to location, where the witches serve a purpose to the area. I see it as though he grew tired of seeing people reveal their worst nature when they came to him asking for gifts

When I first played this I was of the opinion that Olgrid got what he deserves. He made a deal with O'Dim and now he tries to weasel out of paying. Olgrid is quite a huge asshole when you meet him. And my opinion was that Odim didn't really cheat him. And I also thought it was a great play by ODim to meet on a painting of a moon. I appreciated the literal interpretation of Olgrid's condition and how Odim outsmarted him. That being said I couldn't help but feel that Olgrid was the asshole that he was because Odim turned his heart to stone. I don't really agree with the assertion that Odim just highlighted the evil nature that was already in Olgrid. Odim practically turned Olgrid into a sociopath. And sociopaths act and behave very differently than non-sociopath people. It's was hard for me to fault Olgrid for any of his post Odim encounter behavior because all of this behavior was tainted by Odim and isn't solely the responsibility of Olgrid.

Some of these larger choices are somewhat lessened by the inclusions of items that can't be obtained anywhere else. For the end of HoS there's the moral choice, but there's also the more tangible choice of receiving the Iris sword and the Viper sword, or choosing a reward from O'Dimm. And in Skellige, going with Cerys is the only way to reach a place of power. So if you're a completionist, looking to get all places of power and all witcher gear, your decisions are kind of made for you.

In a way, they are different kinds of villains. The Crones are a classic villain. It's clear they are rather evil. Their deeds, words, and desires point to their being evil O'dimm is different. You can actually question for a good part of HoS if he is truly evil. In many ways, he seems to punish evil doers. It's only later on do you see his callous disregard for certain people (the old man he killed for instance). He only reveals that side after several demonstrations of his control over the situation; when we know there is nothing we can do but play our part. And indeed he makes us question a great many things throughout the game. His is a unique form of evil. It's subtle, yet still there. When he visited the professor to give him the protecting circle is a unique instance. It took me some time to mull it over, but that was a curse. His words sound nice, but he basically told the professor "live in fear in this small circle for the rest of your days, or die". O'dimm is more memorable because of how unique he is. He stands out. He certainly has power to use, but rarely makes use of it. His word and will seem to be a bigger force than his abilities.

My favorite thing about O'dim is that NO ONE who makes a deal with him does so without knowing the price before hand. O'dim never lies but he does prey on the greed and lust of his marks. At any point before the person makes their pact with him they have the option of saying "never mind, I dont think its worth the price". But the fact they never do is their own fault. Same with the old woman in Blood and Wine. She was cruel for no reason and O'dim repayed her cruilty in kind. Even if she had been rude in the proccess, I dont think he'd have cursed her if she actually gave him the food he'd requested. He is, after all, "The Man of Glass" and "Master of Mirrors". He reflects back all which stand infront of him.

@@kaimagnus5760 the circle was not a pact. O'dimm literally just created the circle and advised the scholar to never leave it, effectively robbing the man of his physical freedom for life. My point is that Gaunter doesn't just reflect evil and punishes those who deserve it, he literally does whatever he wants. Iris had no part in Olgierd's wrong doings and yet she suffered a fate worse than most due to O'dimm. The drunkard and the scholar haven't commited anything we know of that would justify the cruel punishments they got. O'dimm punishes the evil and sometimes even helps the good (like geralt) but i have no doubt that O'dimm is also cruel and evil himself due to the actions i described. For all we know, his "rules", might be entirely self imposed and he only follows them to make things more interesting, like a dark souls player who intentionally limits himself for a game that would otherwise be to easy and boring. From my understanding, the only thing Gaunter actually NEEDS his contracts for, is to collect a human soul. Outside of his contracts he can (and will) kill, help and generally mess with other humans to his hearts content.

The reason why Gaunter is such a brilliant villain is that he is calm and calculated, never getting angry or losing control.

Crones theme song is the most eerie/haunting song followed by GoD theme then Oriannas "a night to remember" always get goose bumps when I hear those 3 and havent experienced it from other games. Witcher 3 has the best soundtracks.

In the same triology you have Letho and the villian from witcher 1 (I don't say it's name for spoilers) wich are way better (not to say Gaunter is bad). Not only they have more relevance to the plot and are far more active in the world but how they compare to Geralt on each game and the relationships they have with him define them, Geralt facing them causes amnesic Geralt to develop and change his views about the world and his morals especially on the flaming rose ending for the first one wich is pretty traumatic if it is your first ending. Edit The Crones and Gaunter are good but it seems logical that Geralt would kill them,they are clearly monsters that cause harm to people, the only reason in roleplay to not banish Gaunter after you see the profesor and the spoon scenes in wich he causes damage to 2 inocent people is so he can kill Von Everec. The Crones are good to but they are underdevelop and they have the same problem that every boss in base game has (except the goddam werewolf) they are to easy (having played the game on Blood and Broken Bones ) wich kinda ruins the point of them being werid ancestral gods. For me the witcher 3 has had the worst main villain of the series Eredin and to be fair I don't think people would have gave this much atention to The Crones if not for Eredin being a disapointment.

@@JudgeHolden2003 The fact that you can actually discuss this at the very least proves that he is a complex character. Even if I always spare him (gloir aep Findand) I do believe that he only cared about the school of the Viper and it's witchers he risked Geralt's life and was willing to murder anyone in his path not relevant to Geralt in order to archive his goals wich I'll admit weren't selfish. I do believe he is good and deserves a second chance after all is likely that the murders of the kings made the war less bloody even if he acted as judge and executioner on wether or not some characters would die , remember what can happen to Shella Geralt refuses to save her.

@@felipevega484 Letho was forced to kill Foltest by Nilfgard, and betrayed at the end, wich caused him to hide from anyone at that point. He was more like a prey than a villain to me.

The best thing about Master Mirror is the way the plot and lore slowly unfolds itself throughout HoS. You immediately suspect he could be some kind of demon or devil but at the start when you meet him on the Ofieri ship and he "frees" Geralt you could still tell yourself "ehh it is probably just a really powerful mage". Then the crossroads which is solid proof that Geralt is about to make a pact with a devil or demon. You soon suspect that Gaunter is really an evil being or heartless killer instead of just a powerful magic being. Then you realize what you have gotten into when he shows he can slow down time itself and just murders a guy with a laddle for just being a but annoying. Then you see Gaunter's power over ghosts with Olgierd's brother. But what really stood out to me and sent shivers down my spine was the scene in Oxenfurt with the professor. That eerie feeling of "We are knees deep in sh*t" suddenly turning to "We are so one for" when you realize the full, devastating and absolutely remorse-less evil power that is Gaunter o' Dim. The way he enjoys ruining peoples lives so thoroughly that you even feel pity for the "bad human guys" of the story. I was genuinely scared at that point and creeped out so much more than with any other thing in the entire Witcher franchise.

In the english dub i only get the pretend amability of gaunter on most scenes. In the french dub though the guy mixes amability and creepiness/sinistry all the time and it really sends chills down your spine, more than in eng. They picked an amazing VA and from the start (same acting in white orchard that made me wonder if CDPR briefed translating teams beforehand when HoS wasnt released yet. (I met dlcs where the actor was changed from vanilla because they were not prepared beforehand like Javik changing voice in ME3's expansions)

Agree with everything you said. Also i likes the world building they did for this villain. The random kids singing his theme. That you see him very early on in the game and by the time you get to the dlc you have forgotten about him and when you find out you met him you are like wtf. That secretly is in different cutscenes of the dlc.
