So this, THIS moment when Silly stands and runs for the first time makes me think of Tim's first moment after he died and his spirit was set free from his body, he got out of his hospital bed and stood on the ground and then went to Heaven and felt grass under his feet, something he hadn't done for over a YEAR! There's an extended version where we learn more about Grace's history of the school and Netiri's sister. But how would Jake's brother talk to him? Eywa isn't the one true goddess of the universe. She's an organic lifeform who's brain is made of all the trees on the planet and which creatures can interact with. She's certainly the goddess of Pandora but Humanity has its own God-Emperor of Man (wait wrong universe)
@SkageXL52 жыл бұрын

Might be reaching here, but maybe somewhere in one of the sequels we might see Jake look at a final video message left to him by his brother. As Jake might be raising a son or two on Pandora, he'll naturally be reminded of how he grew up and maybe look at such a message when remembering. Not saying I know anything about what the sequels will look like, but it seems very logical to include as I'm sure she's not the first viewer who wonders a bit about the other brother.

You call out the "documentary cam" a lot. I'm fascinated by how they made the choice that all of the camera movements are "practical" in that you can do them with traditional cameras. They avoided any super artificial camera moves because that would pull people out of the totally computer generated world, doubly so in 3D showings. I also love that in the big climactic battle, clarity is still king. Pandora's defenders typically move right to left while human attackers typically move left to right. This keeps you totally aware of which side is which throughout the complicated sequence. James Cameron knows how to shoot a trackable action sequence like few others. I remember seeing this in theaters in 3D and being amazed at just the holo displays throughout the movie. A minor detail that showed how much care was thrown into figuring out how to make a good 3D movie. The movie is lit very brightly to compensate for 3D glasses. Shot length is a bit longer than normal because the brain needs more time to process depth. It leans towards diorama 3D instead of pop-out 3D. All these things that need to be done for a convincing effect just work here. Real pity that big studios learned "3D makes money" instead of "here's how to do a good 3D effect" and killed the whole gimmick.
@dash48006 ай бұрын
It was technically filmed with a camera. Cameron would film the 3d environments in the sound stage while capturing the mocap performances. The computer would render the shots in a crude way so he could see his composition live.

You mentioned at the end you wanted Jake to be able to talk to his brother through Eywa. That would not be possible. Jakes brother didn't die on Pandora so his electric life force wasn't absorbed into the Pandora biometrics. ... This movie was so mind blowing at the theater in 3D. When it gets re-released into the theaters in 3D later this fall before Avatar 2 comes out, you should really see the immersion the 3d effect had on this movie. All the colors and floating bits in the world of Pandora really pop in 3D. Don't expect cheesy 70s/80s 3d where the attempted to make you feel like something is coming at you. No, the 3d in here is all about subtlety and immersion and it was wonderfully done and really puts you into the film. ... The sequels have all been filmed basically at the same time. Cameron had delayed them because he was waiting for technology to catch up with his ideas. Then the pandemic hit which shifted the release dates. 2 will be out this year, 3, next, so on and so forth. I loved this first one and has a special nostalgia to it for me. I hope the sequels can hold up to it and not ruin it as all the Star Wars movies have killed my childhood nostalgia of the original 3.

The light penetrating the ears is called Sub-Surface Scattering (SSS). It penetrates all of the flesh but it is most obvious where the flesh is thin. It makes the blood inside glow and really helps flesh look like flesh. The documentary-style camera work you mentioned was technology developed for this film. James Cameron wanted a physical hand-held device he could use to input camera zoom, focus, position and rotation values into the computer in real time. They could watch James Cameron's hand-held virtual camera work in real-time, showing the Pandora world and it's animated characters.. But it was a simplified version with proxy models. A friend of mine, Larry Schultz was on the team to build all of the 3D world models with simple proxy models. Every plant and flower he placed in the proxy scene was then re-crafted with high detail models. The proxy world he created was done with the same software I use, Lightwave 3D. Unfortunately Larry passed away in 2012. Miss you buddy. Yes that is the Papyrus font. In this case since the actors are walking through them it may well be practical. I'm not sure about these plants but a lot of these sets are fully CG, including the plants. Typically on greenscreen anything the actors touch will be real or at least the part they touch will be. For example a building could be fully CG exept the door they touch to walk in.

This movie was the best 3D I have ever seen. The movie experience was like something from the future. In full IMAX 3D there were bits of char falling all around me during the Home Tree scene. Flying around Pandora, you could look down, out of the door of the Scorpion, for instance, because of the distribution of seats. It was fully immersive in a very literal sense. A lot of the movie was entirely CGI, but it never felt like watching a cartoon. I saw it again in a regular Digital 3D theater, which was also good, but the 3D started at the screen and was nowhere near as immersive. Beautiful still, of course, and I own a 2D copy. But do yourself a favor when the sequels come out: Regardless the cost, pay the arm and a leg and your first born child for the IMAX seats. It was an amazing experience for me that I will always remember. Hopefully the story will be better than B+ next time. The genius of mirroring the actors' mocap avatars with the hybrid alien clone avatars in the plot won't be new, so the neat-o factor won't be able to carry the movie as much. But by all accounts, Cameron has that handled. Looking forward to it.

Hey Shanelle, I highly suggest watching the Director's Cut/Extended Version. The director's cut flushes out a lot of details, particularly why Natiri wanted to kill Jake. Natiri's little sister attacked a bulldozer destroying the forest. In retaliation, the soldiers tracked the sister back to the school and ended up killing her and several other young Navi. There's a scene where Grace shows Jake the school building, all shot up, and explains what happened. IMO, this scene adds a TON to the story.

But Avatar was such a runaway success that he stuck with working on Avatar sequels instead of making Alita next. So the project was eventually handed off to Robert Rodriguez to finish. The movie was delayed and eventually released around the time that Disney bought Fox. To avoid rivaling any Disney/Marvel releases, Alita got buried as a February release without much promotion, but it's a great movie and one you should consider watching for your channel.

Gotta say... It's not 'spirituality' like has been specifically done before. Yes, it speaks of life as 'energy' that's borrowed, then given back, but the idea that individual identity is (for lack of a better term) 'recorded' in Eywah, in the network accessible from the trees, is a different concept than what we usually read as 'spiritual'. It's more like energy is a finite force shared by all, and that individuals 'ride' that energy before being absorbed and 'saved' in the network they reference as Eywah. Since energy is finite and shared, it deserves deep respect. And the ready access that all Pandorans experience makes for an awareness that we humans, being cut off from shared life, tend to forget and/or ignore. So easy to exploit if we can overlook or stay blind to that community of life. Really love the Voice of Science provided by Grace (almost 'Grace of God') that legitimizes that community of life that Pandorans share not by ESP but by actual chemical biology. Note: the exploitation by humankind comes with a history and current state of literally 'killing their Mother', using up the planet Earth. In this film, Mankind is an invasive, toxic species. It's a planetary parasite that devours worlds. Cameron put in a LOT of time world-building. Some of this grows out of lifeforms he saw in oceans, but also was adapted to a different atmosphere and a lower gravity. He worked through how the creatures would have evolved, what characteristics they would share, such as 6 limbs (legs, arms, wings) and 4 digits (Navi have a thumb and 3 fingers to Navi-human avatars' thumb and 4). The one problem I personally have with the story is a cultural one: the idea that white humans can master and lead better than native peoples. There are numerous stories where white humans have 'gone native' and proven more superior than the natives they live with in saving the native group from disaster. It's too much hubris and arrogance for my taste, a little too racist (or in this case 'speciesist'). The white male savior is an offensive concept. If they were that exceptional, their communities wouldn't be headed straight into self-made disasters. Jake's bother Tom would have never transferred to Eywah; Tom died on Earth, before traveling with his avatar to Pandora. Tom never connected to the energy network that is Eywah or (even if he had connected with it) was never close enough to Pandora to pass to Her. So Jake can never be in contact again with his brother; that's a voice that is lost.

You were right about the themes again, of course. There was a special video about the making of this. As to formula, this reminds me so much of The Last Samurai: Westerner lives among the savages, finds a better life there, becomes the best of them, fights for their survival (of course in The Last Samurai they could not win because of the historical setting).

Jake's brother would have had to been buried on Pandora for Jake to hear him but you saw him cremated at the beginning of the movie.

The trivia about him starting in 1999 goes back to one of my favorite 90s animes, Battle Angel Alita. Cameron had seen it and bought the live action movie adaptation rights to the anime and it's source manga. After Titanic, he gave an interview, where one of the questions was what his next project was going to be. He'd said that he wanted to do Battle Angel Alita, but he didn't think the CGI tech at the time could do it justice, so he was going to do another film, a personal project, first as practice, and to help advance the state of the art. But then his little CGI Tech Test Run of a movie took so long to make, plus made so much at the box office that he was instantly set to work on the sequels, which were also going to take forever to make that he decided to hand over the directing of Alita to his friend, director Robert Rodriquez, while retaining the executive producer credit. (He also changed the order of the title wording so that it'd fall into the pattern of all his films starting with either "T" or "A".

1:58 Avatar is AWESOME for themes, much like Cameron's other films. He doesn't shy away from using cinema as his personal soapbox, but he is such a good filmmaker people don't seem to mind getting a lecture with their popcorn 🍿.

This movie was a 3D landmark. It was not simply offered in 3D as some movies were at the time. This movie was completely made and designed specifically to be watched in 3D and triggered about a 3 year period where all major TV manufactures made 3D capable TVs using either active or passive 3D glasses. It’s a little sad but true that for anyone who didn’t watch Avatar in 3D, they didn’t actually watch the movie at all. If they make a sequel, you must watch it in 3D.

28:47 Yeah, exactly...I just keep remembering a quip from Mystery Science Theater 3000, the episode "Megalon vs. Godzilla," when they riffed "ACtion sequences filmed in Confuse-O-Vision!"

I work in VFX...and yeaaaaahhhh...this is about as hard as it gets... on EVERY level. Every corner of the production had to be firing on all cylinders to make this happen. Not every shot is perfect (obviously)....but for it to come together as it did...a minor miracle. :)

Most movies I remember seeing Stephen Lang in he plays the same similar strong character good or bad. With the exception of his character in the movie Tombstone, which he is almost unrecognizable in.

I do feel there is a missed opportunity in this movie. When Grace tried to explain the power of the neural connections between the Navi the trees and the animals what she feels capitulate is the economic benefits that could be gotten from learning and mastering their technology. Yes, the Navi have technology, they have the ability to upload Consciousness into a neural network of plants and animals that is unless. In other words, the human consciousness could be kept forever. What would some of the richest people in the world pay to have that opportunity? That's the real question.
@houseofaction2 жыл бұрын
that isn't technology
@lethaldose20002 жыл бұрын
@@houseofaction The definition of technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes or applications. Technology uses scientific principles, and applies them to change the environment in which we live. The Navi have practiced and mastered unexplained knowledge for practical purposes. Humans can learn from their knowledge is what I was saying.

When I 1st saw this in the cinema it was mind blowing, the transparent screens, the quality of the 3D, the created world.... Amazing, I saw Alice in Wonderland the following week and the 3D used in Alice was amateurish in comparison, all glass you see on Pandora is CGI real glass would have had reflections they would have had to remove in post... Everything outside on Pandora is CGI... the making of is great, the documentary can is actually a virtual camera inside the 3D environment...

it's Ferngully. Honestly, the thing that stands out to me is how much this movie "borrows" from the Blizzard video games for environments and vehicles and such. Which is turnabout because the Blizzard video games have been "borrowing" from Cameron's movies for decades. Also, WRT the fake handheld camera, part of the reason I don't think it works here vs other places I have seen it used in big CG heavy things is because a lot of the time the "camera" isn't anywhere. It isn't placed on something in the environment, but is just free floating around. The "handheld" look divorced from human hand physics makes it seem weird.

Smallscreen doesn't do it justice but still an impressive feat. On another note your an adult now. Nothing to stop you from getting a hammock for yourself. 6 years ago I bought a beautiful one handmade by indigenous people in Mexico. I use it when camping mostly but I am tempted to get the indoor clamps because they're good for your back.

In general, I am not a fan of movies in 3D. However, Avatar I was able to see in iMax 3D and it was absolutely epic! I remember that what impressed me the most in this movie were the CGI of Pandora and particularly the animals... The animals, their movements etc. were so believable. A lot of care must have been taken in the movement of the animals to make them so convincing.
