One of James Cameron’s cinematic greats after Titanic and two Terminator films! I don’t care how many keep nitpicking and griping over how much they hate Avatar by calling it a “rip-off” or a “joke,” NONE of it matters. This 2009 film was so innovative of its kind visually and aesthetically. It also introduced the patented Fusion Camera! One James Cameron and Vince Pace patented themselves for other filmmakers wanting to borrow it for their own work.

I love the fact that you can differentiate the Avatars from the Na'Vi by looking at their hands. The Na'Vi have four fingers on each hand, while the Avatars have five, probably because of the fact that the scientists also used human DNA when they made the Avatar bodies. Plus, the users of those bodies are human, and they're probably used to having five fingers, so it'll be easier for them to adapt to the new body. The details!

3:40 Cody what’s truly amazing about the Avatars is the process of making them and how they grow. Like they said about mixing human DNA with Na’vi DNA, and it’s done in labs back on Earth and until they become embryos, and then on the 6 year journey from the Solar system to the Alpha Centauri system, they fully mature into full grown Na’vi/ human hybrids aka Avatars. This is why this is hands down my favorite sci fi movie since it is somewhat in the realm of realism because of the near future technology and all the wildlife on Pandora makes sense if it ever existed, for example every land creature has 6 limbs in order to make up for the light gravity of Pandora which is 0.8G compared to Earth’s 1G, and it also explains why the Na’vi have adapted and evolved into 10ft tall sapient humanoid aliens to also make up for Pandora’s light gravity, and this is also why Colonel Quaritch was telling to Jake 8:28 “the low gravity will make u soft.”

I had never seen this movie before the remastered re-release in theaters, and I had heard that there was an extended director's cut available on Blu-ray. Even though I had heard that the movie was far more spectacular in 3D IMAX, I watched the extended cut first at home. I'm so glad I did, because the opening sequence is more linear and doesn't have any flashbacks, thus answering questions that Cody raises, such as "what's wrong with Earth?" "are they twins?" "he's in a wheelchair!?", etc. There were tons of other scenes that improved the story, as well--plus the ones in the "deleted scenes" bonus features that would have answered a lot of plot holes, had they been included. I guess James Cameron didn't want a four-hour movie on his hands! Then, when I saw the shorter, theatrical-length version in theaters, I could focus on the visuals and not worry about the story.

Some known differences between the avatars and Na'vi are due to the influence of human DNA. Critically, the avatar brain and nervous system are modeled to precisely match those of its human operator while still maintaining appropriate Na'vi cellular biology. The avatar also possesses the necessary nervous system pathways required for the control interface. Avatars retain the human configuration of five digits on each hand and foot, as opposed to the native Na'vi who possess four digits on each limb. Avatars possess eyebrows, while the Na'vi are hairless apart from their scalp and a small tuft of hair on the tips of their tails. Avatars display somewhat more human-like body musculature and structure than the Na'vi. (This is especially apparent when comparing the build of Jake Sully to that of the male Na'vi of the Omaticaya clan; Jake's body structure is sturdier than those of the more willowy Na'vi). The Na'vi have large lemur-like eyes, while an avatar's eyes are usually smaller and more human-like. The Na'vi nose is flat and cat-like, while the nose of an avatar has a more human-like central ridge, in some cases quite pronounced. The queue of an avatar starts at the base of the skull, whereas a Na'vi queue starts at the top of the skull. The reason for this is not clear. The Na'vi have opposable big toes, while avatars do not. I believe they said there are 10¹² trees on Pandora, which is 1,000,000,000,000 with each tree having 10,000 connections to the trees around it. Eywa has 10^¹⁶ connections, or approximately 20-100 times as many as the human brain. And yes, I did the math, multiplying the amount of trees by the amount of connections between each tree results in Eywa's connections.

The most common complaint I heard from people who didn't like this movie was that it was the Pocahontas story but with a happy ending. What they didn't seem to realize is that it's like that because it's a common theme from history. Humans are still, to this day, invading territory that isn't theirs and trying to take it. Like in Ukraine. As you said, people haven't learned from history and keep trying the same thing, over and over again. This time, the planet itself was alive and able to fight back, so the invaders lost. Personally, I think that it's a fantastic movie with a great story. I'm glad that you were finally able to watch it.

This movie is stunningly beautiful and a creative masterpiece from a design and world building standpoint. The first time I saw it I was blown away. Unfortunately, the second time I saw it, the spectacle was not enough to carry the movie. I realized the story is unoriginal (it's just Disney's Pocahontas or Dances With Wolves) and I am not a fan of the extremely heavy handed "humans are terrible" fanatical environmentalist subtext (really it's just text at that point). I never begrudge anyone for loving a movie and I am so happy you enjoyed watching it. I would just recommend giving it another watch after a little while before deciding if you want to spend money on seeing it again in theaters.

Giovanni Ribbisi does a really good job at playing a hated character. he’s supposed to be that guy in the story he really makes you hate the character. Only great actors can make a hated characters

Also there's a little Easter egg with year in which action takes place. If you would stop on scene where Jack is recording his "diary", you would actually see date wrote down there. And it's year 2154 😁❤️

When I was a kid I actually thought this was more of a documentary. Acting and it seems a lot more real than most movies. The CGI was good enough to convince me as a kid..

In the end Grace got to be with Ewya as well which is probably the best thing she could have hoped for.
