Actual biologists, anthropologists, and speculative biology artists were brought onto the project to create the world of Pandora! I love how much thought was put into the setting to make it as alien but as believable as possible!

The question I have is why do the Navi only have two arms.

@@jm329 two reasons. The 1st is that James Cameron didn't want his potential romantic partner aliens to be too unlike humans. Having an alien be anthropomorphic is the best way to bring in an audience that won't cringe at the thought of an alien and a human falling in love. The 2nd is speculative as we don't have the exact concept art, but do you remember the monkey like aliens with 2 arms that split into 4 at the elbow? The theory is that the Navi are descended from a common ancestor of those monkeys, meaning a prehistoric species of monkey evolved in a way to fuse its 4 arms together into 2.

In the extended edition, during the sex scene, Jake and Netiri actually do attach their nerve-hair. It makes someone bonded literally in body and soul. As to Aaron asking what if their nerve-hair gets cut, it's considered a major insult to the Navi. It's a major cluster of nerves, and to cut it would be extremely painful, and prevents any connection to a mate or mount. And they can't access the memory trees. It's the ultimate shame to put on a Navi. Two things about T'sutay A) his actor plays Mother's Milk from The Boys B) also in the extended edition, he lives from his fall, but he was badly hurt, and asks Jake to kill him, thereby giving him command of the clan.

If you look closely in the trailer for Avatar 2, the Na'vi Avatars for Quaritch and Wainfleet do not have long hair, therefore no ability to merge with the ecosystem of Pandora. Possibly a change in the Human/Na'vi Avatar bodies seen as a weakness or flaw. Military not seeing it as worth it. They don't have time to learn how to merge with the ecosystems so remove the ability altogether.

I saw it in 3D and it definitely enhanced the experience back in the day. Without the 3D it's still a solid fun movie, but the 3D added so much wonder to it that it was kinda overwhelming ^^

I saw it in full IMAX 3D and it was an incredible experience. Cameron used the 3D to add depth instead of make things shoot out of the screen at viewers. I kept seeing this dust floating in front of me while watching so I waved it away... until I realized it was in the movie.

@@Timmayytoo Exactly this! None of that cheap 3D that a lot of movies used back in the day (for example, Resident Evil Afterlife... horrid 3D for a horrid movie) Actual depth just like VR would be, so you can see things in their proper 3D space. It's amazing.

I watched it 4 times but never came to watch it in a cinema. The music in this movie is so underrated, I was just as fascinated by it as I was by the visuals. Especially the "passive epic" parts, where the massive tree gets introduced, etc. feel so amazing.

My stance on this movie & it's upcoming sequels has always been that if they can keep the incredible world building and visuals of the first movie while improving the story and making it more interesting I'll absolutely be there for all 4 sequels

That's the kicker: in the Extended Collector's Edition, there *was* an improved story. Problem is that James Cameron likes to make 4-hour movies and shrink them down to 2 1/2 hours... and in Avatar's case, he took out all the story-improving scenes and kept the tech demo scenes. That's why it lost the Oscar.

58:12 Sigourney Weaver's avatar is considered like a "gen 1" version from the avatar program or close to it, which means that hers is much more human in appearance than the others that you see in the film. Jake's almost fits right in with the Na'vi minus having an extra finger and toe, the eyebrow hair, and the queue being attached lower on the skull. Grace's eyes are smaller and her nose is much more human than cat-like.

The extended edition gives SO much more backstory regarding Jake's brother to help you understand why the RDA approached Jake and why the passengers must be asleep the entire voyage to Pandora. There is also a book called "Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora (James Cameron's Avatar)" written by Maria Wilhelm and Dirk Mathison, released in conjunction with the film in theaters, that explains the history of Earth at the point this film takes place, all the technology (including what unobtanium is used for. One use is in the propulsion systems of the ships that transport humans between Earth and Pandora), all the flora and fauna of Pandora, and the weapons and equipment used by the RDA. I highly recommend either that book or consulting the James Cameron's Avatar wiki for background info.

@@RenaissanceK The trip from Earth to Pandora takes 6 years (no FTL travel, though as close to superlumanal as the technology can provide) and no ship would be able to carry that amount of supplies for the hundreds of passengers aboard. The six years also allowed for the Avatar bodies to grow to 'adulthood' on the trip out. The six year voyage also explains why it takes the humans over 12 years to return to Pandora in the sequel following their expulsion at the end of the first film.

This movie is a lot of fun & I love the world they created with Pandora. Not incredible but definitely not the terrible movie so many claim it is. And yes, I know that it's "just Dances with Wolves/Pocahantos/Fern Gully in space" - I just don't really care. It's clearly inspired by those stories in the same way Joker was inspired by King of Comedy, Taxi Driver etc.

Unobtanium is a mcguffin for scifi material that does things that we haven't found a way to do for real. In this case it's a room temperature superconductor. Currently the only way we can have superconductors is to cool conductive materials to near absolute zero. Once there the electrical resistance drops dramatically and as a side effect the power draw is a lot lower, thus generating less heat. Even with current cpu:s that aren't designed for it, you can get nearly twice the clock speed once superconductive and fraction of the power draw. There's some research into superconductive processors, but it's still rather early... Even still we already have 100GHz processors and theory suggests low THz should be possible. So yeah, hundred times faster cpu:s... No wonder it's so expensive

Huh, that kind of makes sense as to why the ecosystem that developed with a room temperature super conductor present in the environment would develop stranger biological computers than simple brains on Earth. That or it's the other way around and the Unobtainium is created by the local life as a component of their bio-internet thing and the buried unobtainium is akin to fossil fuels. Fossil computing substrate? Actually that would fit almost perfectly with the films message thinking on it.

While seeing this in theaters in 3D was an exceptional experience, what's STILL most impressive about this movie to me is the technology that it used and how much that transformed all of the films that followed. The behind the scenes on this film is _mindblowing_ in how it helps you understand just how much this was unlike any movie that was made before. The performance capture and everything happened to get the takes that James Cameron wanted ...and THEN he went back through all of that captured material in a digital environment of the acting that he wanted and captured all of the camera shots _while basically walking through an empty warehouse with a digital tablet for months._ Pushing this technology is what made it more possible for films like the new Planet of the Apes series, and also helped in pushing more digital technology around performance capture in games, which then fed back in to how that was able to be used for The Volume in The Mandalorian. James Cameron's films are important and impressive, but they're also usually pushing a HUGE shift in the film industry at the same time, like the T-1000 did for computer effects.

Agreed! Seeing some of the games this technology has been applied to really gives some amazing results. I remember games being good, but love the cinema and world building in them, and just as an example - Halo 4, 5, the amount the characters come through from their mocap, and even being digitally recreated is amazing. I love the idea that actors can move into digital spaces with the expression and movement that makes them them. Its been awesome to see. Thinking about it, What was the film with Johnny Depp that was filmed live for reference purposes? Rango...? Same Idea, but the newer technology does it for me.

My friend told me "if you watch it in a year, and it's still your favorite movie, then it isn't just because of the hype." 11 years later it's still my FAVORITE movie. I love the level of detail in this movie and how it's in the future, but the stuff isn't too far advanced like in other scifi-movies. Cameron's intent was to make his own Star Wars so he always envisioned it as a series of films. I'm very interested in see what the response to the sequels will be given how long it's taken. Nostalgia appeal usually hits after the second decade so this will be an odd middle ground timing wise.

The issue is that Avatar never really hit it off in that way. When the original Star Wars came out, it blew everyone's minds and people couldn't stop talking about it. People stopped talking about Avatar quite quickly, unless they were mentioning the effects. The series will definitely gain a cult following that'll support it, and obviously the films are incredibly financially successful, but they'll never have the impact that Star Wars did. The first film is the highest grossing movie of all time (unless you adjust for inflation, in which case it's Gone With The Wind) but a lot of the overall reception was that it was good but not amazing. In fact, I rarely ever hear anyone mention the film at all, and haven't for years. But I think James will be fine with that since the films are a passion project for him

I saw it in theater, in IMAX 3-D four times. It was all encompassing. You were literally inside the environment. You felt the wind, the moisture, the drops in your stomach. It was an absolute experience. And it was all four times I saw it. At 50 years old, I still remember it vividly. The detail never failed to impress. That being said, I am 100% for the Dances with Wolves telling of the tale.

no, some current era of UNSC/UEG technology is better than those walking sticks levels of the RDA Humankind version over there. (but fairly the pandoran world has only faced a 'scouting party' kind of army. Not the Full back over there in the still tenuous state of Human Space outside of pandora, so who knows). but there are things that the UNSC could learn from some of the feats of the RDA Humanity which would be interesting for the UNSC/UEG Humanity to have it with. some advanced feat that they still haven't done yet. or have done but not perfectly used safely, and commonly across their once 800+ living territorial space. same for the RDA Humanity, which....also having and doing their own after getting the feats from the UNSC/UEG Humanity's so far achieved current technological tier which said-former Humanity version would improve upon way better than what they still limitedly have in their verse's Year 2100s. (especially Space travel. cutting down that Years long travel from their version of Sol to that aliens' Alpha Centauri tremendously).

I really resent the “it’s a ripoff of Dances with Wolves” crowd. So only one film can be made about colonization and genocide? This film is so precious to me. One of my grandfathers, John Watts, was a Cherokee war chief, with a white father and Cherokee mother. He led one of the largest forces of natives, from different indigenous nations, against colonizers who were raiding and ruining indigenous settlements. He fought when many of the Cherokee had already decided to go West. When the decision was finally made to end the resistance, he stayed behind. If all of the eastern nations had worked together from the beginning, this could have been a very different nation. I have to drive by land once owned by his cousin ( Chief Doublehead, so named because he adopted white culture and literally sold the land that had belonged to his people) almost every day on my way to work. It’s a polo club now. The leader of the Navi, Neyteri’s father, was played by Wes Studi, a Cherokee. I know some of the movie is cringe at times, but it’s still one of my favorites.

Avatar is victim to a phenomenon that affects all American pop culture and something I truly despise about fandoms. There is a tipping point where all things uber-popular will someday become cool to criticize and tear apart. It literally happens to everything that becomes a huge hit. Pop stars, movies, celebrities, TV shows... And in my humble opinion that is what happened to Avatar. For people to call it a terrible movie or that they hated it is absolutely a lie. You cannot have a movie become the biggest box office hit of all time with people hating it. It just does not happen. If Avatar was bad or poorly received it would have flopped in theaters. It did quite the opposite. But it did become so popular that it became fashionable to hate on it. Oh, it's just Ferngully with blue aliens. It's Dances with Wolves in space. Blah blah blah. Any writer will tell you there is a very limited amount of story constructs and we have all been watching rehashed versions of earlier works for decades and decades. To try to knock down what James Cameron accomplished with Avatar is criminal in my opinion. Sure we have seen this plot a dozen times before, but were we entertained? Were we transported to a stunning new world? Did Cameron introduce a whole new way to create motion pictures to deliver this incredible movie? Did Avatar's production team give us a fully fleshed-out alien world, unlike anything we have ever seen before? You cannot say this is a bad movie... you just can't. To do so is to just show ignorance of what a giant leap forward this film was on so many levels.

I’ve noticed this happen over the years and I think you are right that that’s what happened to avatar. For whatever reason when something gets mega popular people just can’t help but to hate on it. I feel like that’s what happened with the walking dead as well. Sure there were some seasons that weren’t as great as others but IMO it’s never been like a absolutely horrible show even at its worst. Walking dead just like avatar was loved at first but then when it reached its peak around season 5 or 6 everyone started hating on it and still hate on it till this day. I feel like there’s a chunk of the “fan base” that no joke the only reason they’ve kept up with the show is to hate on it any chance they get

It allows us to sweat over our whole body, while most mamals can only sweat through their tongue. So they have to stop often to pant (i think pant is the correct word in english, but i'm not sure, not my first language :P )

What a coincidence. I just bought the Blu-Ray Collectors Edition (already had the Movie, but on DVD) cause i ... felt like it, and wanted to rewatch it. Don't know how it will be when i watch it again, but back then in 2010 i LOVED Avatar! It's the only movie to this day i watched in theatre FOUR TIMES. Something about it was so addicting. The world and the story James Cameron created and the immersion through the 3D was just breathtaking. If you guys somehow have the option, please rewatch in in 3D cause you won't believe how much it adds to the experience.

This film has it's flaws but I still want to see more of this universe. I think where "Avatar" is the weakest is explaining the motivation for humanity being there, which makes the stakes feel "meh" to me and makes Unobtanium seem like a MacGuffin. The film does a horrible job of explaining how important the horribly named mineral is. According to Cameron, humanity relies on Unobtanium for energy and space travel. It's essentially spice from "Dune". To me, if this was highlighted more it would have made for a better story. I hope Cameron does a better job fleshing this out in the sequels.

People bag this movie nowadays but it was huge when it came out, its reception was bigger than any other movie I remember. Everyone was talking about it. The experience of watching this in 3D was absolutely amazing, it's still one of the best 3D experiences of any movie that has come out since. The movie was so big it generated a group of people who were so obsessed with the world of Pandora that they were termed Avatards. Some people experienced post movie depression with the realisation that the fictional world of Pandora was intangible and could never be experienced in reality. The whole 3DTV fad was born from this movie. I can't really overstate how big this movie was to people who were too young to remember it or to those who simply never got a chance to see it or just ignored all the hype.

"Unobtainium" is a term used for any kind of hypothetical material that would solve various engineering constraints but is, as far as modern science can tell, impossible to produce. Such as, in this case, a room temperature superconductor.
