"Laogai" (short for Láodòng Gǎizào) in Chinese means "reform through labor". In short, it's a slogan to refer to labor camps, or labor-camp-style "re-education" in China. The Zuko/Iroh scene always gives me chills, most especially because of Iroh actually yelling at Zuko. You know it's serious when Iroh's yelling at you like that. Despite always being patient with Zuko, he had enough now. I love that even Iroh has a point where he's driven to frustration, and not only is it understandable, but it's also coming from a place of love as well. Because Iroh cares for Zuko, he just wants the best for him. Zuko risking his life and going down this path forced on him by his father is just not good for him. The Gaang and the Freedom Fighters teaming up together was so awesome. They work so well together! There were so many hints honestly pointing to Jet dying. The whole life flashing before your eyes thing, the slow mo of the attack, Long Feng's comment of his "demise", how Smellerbee and Longshot were acting, and what Toph said about him lying about being okay. The implications were there, but because this is Nickelodeon we're talking about here, they didn't want the show to make it explicit that they killed a teenage kid onscreen. Overall, poor Jet. Despite what he has done in the past, I believe he truly redeemed himself in the end here. Too bad it came at a high cost. Aang and Appa's reunion was just everything!

For the record. Longshot does not aim the bow at his leader. He drew his bow towards the entrance to protect them from further attacks from the Dai Li. Smellerbee comforts Jet as he subsequently succumbs to his "serious internal injures." The fatal earth bending move Long Feng dealt caused grave injures to Jet's internal diaphragm causing his organs to rupture and hemorrhage.

Lake Laogai" won the Primetime Emmy Award for Individual Achievement Award. The two questions Uncle Iroh asks Zuko to ask himself, "Who are you" and "What do you want" are prominent philosophical questions from the sci-fi series Babylon 5 designed to represent order and chaos respectively. The basic plot of this episode is similar to X-Men 2. There was a government conspiracy, the Dai Li's leader is secretly controlling the Earth Kingdom, that both the "good guys", Team Avatar, and "bad guys", Freedom Fighters, agreed was bad, and thus teamed up to infiltrate a secret government base hidden under Lake Laogai, which they found the location of by probing a brainwashed friend's mind. One of the characters, Jet, dies, and the bad guys, Iroh and Zuko, escape. When Sokka tries to convince Katara to kiss Jet to reinstate his memory, Aang expresses apparent jealousy, stating it is a bad idea. This is the only episode in which Uncle Iroh reprimands Zuko. While trying to regain his memory, Jet has a flashback to his childhood in which it is revealed that the Rough Rhinos were responsible for the destruction of his hometown and the murder of his parents.
