I'm of the belief that the reason Feng didn't just run with Roku is that he wanted to help Roku protect his island not only for it being Rokus home but it may have been his hatching place. It would make sense that a dragon would want to save where he was born and he may have had eggs there himself. Just a speculation though

I always thought that Sozin went to the island to intentionally prolong the exposure of Roku to the poisonous gasses, to the point when it becomes fatal. If it was not for Sozin, Roku would have given up and left the island earlier

So, exactly how many Avatars have there been? In Korra it's stated that it's been 10,000 years between Wan and Korra. We know of at least 9 named Avatars (Wan, Korra, Aang, and the 6 before him), but we're never given an exact number for the rest of them. Assuming that the humans in the world of Avatar live the same lifespan as humans in real life (around 80 years), there can't have been more then 125 Avatars. But, there are cases where some Avatars like Aang have lived a lot longer then that, so it could be even less the 100.

I think the reason Roku's dragon, Fang didn't "save" him was due to the fact Roku was already going to die; remember he got a face full of the toxic fumes of the volcano. Fang didn't want Roku to die alone so he landed and died with him.

My theory is that, if Feng (or fang, idk) tried to grab Roku in that speed, it could potentially make a fatal wound, so, instead of grabbing Roku, he tried to protect and/or die with him at the moment.

Fang probably didn’t protect him because he said he should get out of there knowing it could be the end of him, so Fang probably wanted him to live his own destiny. And let’s say some of that gas get in his nose, he could breath fire on avatar Roku and kill him before the lava would. I for one think Fang is a very good dragon and although it would have saved him I think Fang knew that Roku knew he would get hurt. But I think it was sweet he tried to help him by curling around him it may not help for long but I think his plan was to hold it off for a bit so Roku would escape of course it did not work out like that but still.
