That sucks. My dad always had a tank and then I got my own 10 gallon for my room with his and my mom's approval. I now as an adult with my own kids have 6 freshwater planted tanks with community fish and red cherry shrimp as well as pink and brown ramshorns snails running today, a walstad jar, a leopard gecko, a bearded dragon, a crayfish tank, and 4 cats. We love animals over here. My youngest who just turned 8 on the 22nd just started her own 5 gallon. She has guppies, killi fish, pink ramshorns snails, and red cherry shrimp as well as plants and Manzanita wood. She has this idea of using her marimo balls on the tips of the tree branches to makes it more life like.

The SAE are great for algae and as long as you've got fish in which don't eat the shrimp then the Amano shrimp are a great solution too. Florida flag fish are a great one for algae too but they can be nippy little buggers so they're no good with small fish and shrimps. Groovy.
@SYN4204 ай бұрын
My SAE grew big and started eating my shrimp and chomped on some of my neons, even a headlight tetra was bitten pretty bad and didn't make it. I pulled him out, he's working on a turtle tank now, turtle loves chasing him but the SAE is quick and hides in the rock hides and structures. I just added 5 more Amanos and thinking about grabbing some cherry shrimp to add some color.

Fun fact: The type of diadromous (part freshwater, part marine) life cycle that amano shrimp and some other freshwater shrimp (e.g. Macrobrachium spp.) have is called "Amphidromy" which specifically describes the need for the larval form to develop at first in saltwater then move to freshwater to complete its life cycle.

I have a stupid question, how do you clean a soil tank when the fish waste accumulated at the bottom? I've never used soil before, will the plant actually acts as filter that break down the waste so that we don't need to clean the soiled bottom?
@mattypants4 жыл бұрын
What sort of plant is that on the bottom? I'm about to start a new aquarium with live plants and that's the exact look I'm going for, been doing tons of research but I can't quite decide what to plant. Something that will cover the entire bottom. I have a water garden outside, unfortunately in the Midwest your outside time is severely limited lol. Covid has me working from home so I need something to not go insane, an aquarium full of plants is just what the Dr ordered!

I have a 210gal planted tank that I messed around with for two years trying to get the hair algae out of the tank but pulling it didn't work, turning off the lights failed, herbicides only worked for a couple of weeks before the algae returned. Last month I went to the local fish store and bought what they had labeled flying foxes but which appear to be siamese algae eaters. I placed six in the tank and within two weeks you couldn't find a trace of hair algae. I even had a couple of fine leaved artificial plants at the back of the tank that were overgrown and you could see the fish swimming in and out of the leaves picking out bits of algae. My water returns at the surface had hair algae growing on them at the surface and you could see the algae eaters swimming up and tugging the hair algae off the return tubes until they had gotten it all. I'm beginning to think three or four would have been enough to clean the tank but who cares as long as they keep it from coming back. In the meantime they seem to eat flake food and my homemade fish food that contains spinach in the mix along with going over live plant leaves in the tank.

I have this white/clear slimey film on the top of my betta’s water (the water itself is clear) and whenever I do weekly water changes it comes back. Do you think it is some type of algae? This weekend I was thinking of doing a full 100% water change (rinsing out substrate, plants, ect) and starting fresh. But I am nervous that the change in water will put him into shock. What should I do? I’m stressing out
@AQUAPROS7 жыл бұрын
+Jayla White Sounds like a typical bacterial film. Common in tanks with little to no water surface aggitation. Adding a tiny pump can help if your tank is big enough as to not create too much flow that will annoy the betta

@carolinesalpeck25677 жыл бұрын
Fanny Aldrian as long as the tank has proper water agitation, there should be enough oxygen in the water. Air stones can help, but they aren't necessary. I believe he uses a pump in this tank to make sure he has enough surface agitation
@fanfanifun7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Caroline, it's a new thing to me since I'm always using an air stone for oxygen supply. I tried this surface agitation method several times, but it seems my tank is too crowded. 26 small fishes in 35x20 cm tank. So I'll keep using my air stones.

@flashy51502 жыл бұрын
My guess, as to why there is more algae at the right side of your tank is because the Siamese Eaters and the shrimp might not like the current that is being expelled by your Aquaclear top filter. Maybe if you move the filter to a different area , like where the slightly browning grass at the bottom is, in the open area, then the fish and shrimp will move to the other area, by the tree, to eat the algae. This might be why your grass(as I call it) in the open area is turning a bit brown, because there isn’t enough water circulation there ? Also, where there is more water circulation, there is more oxygen, and plants need/love oxygen, not only light. Also, just like garden plants, some plants like partial shade, like Hostas, not light all day or they die. In fact, most Hostas thrive on shade and humidity, like in the rainforest. You might do better by putting some floating plants on the top to shade it a little. I would research that grass on the bottom, it might not be the fertilizer that you’re using, it might be too much sunlight. I just thought I’d help, it’s worth a try.
