Avatar Legend of Korra Season 3!
This is part 36 of my Avatar Legend of Korra reaction and commentary.
In this reaction video, I will be reacting to Legend of Korra season 3 episode 13 Venom of the Red Lotus.
The Legend of Korra Season 3 comes to an exciting end as we get some of the most epic battles between Korra and Zaheer, Bolin with Mako against Ming Hua and Ghazan, and the Airbenders against the world.
Korra comes face to face with many of her own enemies as she battles the poison given to her by Zaheer.
All of this leads to a bittersweet end where the world seems to be better off but Korra pays the price.

You're right. This ending is bittersweet. The world is saved, but at what cost? Korra is injured, depressed, and traumatized. She has been through so much and done so much yet there is always someone new telling her that the world doesn't need her. In a way I feel like she shows how being the avatar can feel like a thankless job. This is the opposite of Aang, who the world was clamoring for for a century. I definitely think this season is the best of Korra. My main criticism is that I would have loved to see what happened in the lives of Zaheer and his group to lead them to joining the Red Lotus. The most we get is from P'Li.

I kind of like not having much backstory explaining why they turned to what they did. It makes it feel more like Zaheer genuinely believes what he is preaching for its own sake, rather for revenge over some perceived injustice, and the others are following Zaheer either because they believe it too or out of personal loyalty. P'Li follows Zaheer because he saved her, not because she's bitter over the life he saved her from, for example. Just my opinion, of course.

There is so much irony in this episode. 1. Zaher a man who believes a persons allegiance is to themselves and the people they love, is defeated by an organized group of airbenders. 2. A man obsessed with the concept of freedom puts Korra in chains 3. Those chains Korra then uses to defeat him There is probably a lot more but those are the one I can think of.

This universe in full of ironies. Zhao wanted to become a great man to be remembered throughout history. In the end he was only mentioned by name 2 times after he 'died' and was refered other 2 times, but nameless. Azula wanted to control and be surrounded by subordinates who feared her, yet she was defeated, alone and scared, Ozai wanted to be the most powerful person, regarded as deity, yet was imprisoned powerless as a hollowed man...

The ending always gets me so emotional. A lot of korra's adversaries have told her the world doesn't need her, and it obviously affected her (since she was secluded by the white lotus growing up, and made to base her identity around being the Avatar). But the breaking point was Tenzin essentially announcing that the air nation would take over her duty. The antagonists told Korra she was unnecessary, but the air nation proved it (in her eyes). Shaved-Jinora being applauded for while looking like Aang, the previous Avatar, probably rubbed it in even harder. My heart breaks for Korra every time this scene comes on.
@AGoodwinTV

This is so interesting. I have heard (seen) this said a handful of times now, but my feeling about it was very different. From my perspective, the fact that Tenzin and the air nation took that burden on to themselves thanks to Korra's sacrifice was PROOF that she was necessary. Though, I get how it might not have seemed that way to her.

@@AGoodwinTV I agree, the audience definitely isn't supposed to regard "Korra is irrelevant" as the takeaway, but Korra herself is so broken and vulnerable in the moment that that's how she sees it. This loss is so much more significant than when she lost her bending in book 1 but got it back, or when she lost her past lives in book 2 but recovered rava. This time she's crippled not only physically but also mentally, and there's no quick fix for that. The whole scenario is depressing but it makes for such a powerful ending!

@@Eman-vp6ju This is how I always saw it, too. Tenzin meant for his speech about taking on her burden to be encouraging and reassuring to Korra, but to her it just confirmed that she is irrelevant. @@AGoodwinTV Yes, what Tenzin said is nice and inclusionary. However, when you’ve been tasked with a role, and your mentor takes it on with a clan of others to do your job-and most likely not give it back when you return, it’s not a positive confidence booster. It’s indicating that others can do your job, and will do it-because you are currently incapable of doing it.

Season2, ripped away her role as the bridge to the past and the spirits Season3, her role as the protector being replaced. whats remaining is Korra.

I bawled when I saw Korra in a wheelchair. Not because it signified her being incapable, but because I was struggling with mobility issues when I first watched the show. I, too, felt like I had lost my vocation and purpose in life when I could no longer rely on my legs to carry me. A few years past that, I'm now much more able, but still identify as disabled. To see Korra still be a HERO even while disabled meant the world to me. Of course, ATLA did a wonderful job with representation of main characters with disabilities, but this one hit close to home. These last few episodes and Season 4 are my favorite because I empathize with Korra so much!

Season 1 was intended to be the series in entirety; LoK was originally a mini-series, so certain themes that run throughout may seem a bit detatched from the first season. But the villain-engendered change you're trying to find in Book 1 may be the election of Raiko as President, a non-bender holding the highest office in government. It wasn't introduced until Book 2, but you have to tie everything together somehow when Nick f*cks you over

@@AGoodwinTV You'll have a strong opinion on this as you finish the series. The changes were pretty intentional in my book. So far you've only realized the change from book 2. Book 1 change was a nonbender representation through voting. Council that was taken over by strong benders being disbanded. That lead to raiko choosing not to support korra. Not partaking in wars. Season 1 was establishing that every war has been fought with bending along with source of wars rooted in bending in some way. So the president of republic city in a way upheld that idea, even though it was a bad to not go to war with unalaq. As you watch season 4, you'll see the change zaheer brought and you'll see the change next villain brings as you finish s4.

I think what's so bittersweet and heartbreaking about the end is korra herself. Korra's role of the avatar is all she's ever known since age 4 and while she can be arrogant and brash etc. It ultimately comes from a good place: wanting to help the world. She does everything in her power to be the best avatar she can. So it's just so sad that in season 3 when Korra finally realizes her importance and her power after s2. It results in the ultimate sacrifice of her body, soul, and mental state for this role. And it hurts that no one ever really thanks her for it but rather cast her aside.
@AGoodwinTV
@AGoodwinTV 3 жыл бұрын
This seems to be a common interpretation but I didn't see it that way (the part about her being cast aside). I think that Tenzin and the new air nation are recognizing and honoring her sacrifice.
@colinhamilton3033
@colinhamilton3033 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I really don't see the casting aside or lack of thanks -- Tenzin's speech there is all about thanking Korra. Of course, Korra might still interpret it that way; others' words are always filtered through your own emotions. But to me, I think the thoughts that are getting Korra down are along the lines of: "Am I good enough to be the Avatar? Zaheer nearly won that fight." and "I feel broken; I'm not sure I can keep doing this. Is it even worth it? Every season finale a bigger piece of me gets destroyed, but the bad guys keep coming."
@bradsw206
@bradsw206 3 жыл бұрын
@@colinhamilton3033 for me Tenzin's speech was the first real meaningful "thank you Korra for all you do" moment in the show. I mean we start this season with Korra polling 3% in republic City, she gets banished by Raiko, used and toitted around by the earth queen. In the span of 1 year she has faced 3 villains who have tried to dismantle her identity of the avatar. Rarely does anybody in the show aside from Tenzin really appreciate Korra for putting her life on the line consistently time and time again and contextualize just how much is at risk. People don't have to worship her at every turn but it's a far cry from the world 70 years ago during Aang's time when only 1 small time fisher gave the avatar a hard time for existing. I agree with you o however on that last note about a piece of her getting destroyed!
@snakesnoteyes
@snakesnoteyes 3 жыл бұрын
@@AGoodwinTV I agree that Korra isn’t being cast aside, but I think that it’s probably pretty easy for her to feel like she is. Psychic benders aside, bending is a really physical thing and the loss of her physicality probably means that she can’t really bend at the moment. We see how losing her bending affected her at the end of season one, where she was at such an emotional low point that she was finally able to connect with her past lives. Now she doesn’t even have that. Combined with how many times she’s been told that the Avatar isn’t needed or wanted, I think that (given what we know about her) Korra feeling cast aside when she sees/hears the Air Nomads decide to step in for her (even though Tenzin says it’s until she recovers) is an understandable place for her character to be.

I think it was the commentary that didn't allow him to fully immerse in the imagery and score. Not saying that the commentary was bad, it's just that by pausing the scene every few minutes, commenting on what he is seeing, processing what he is seeing, it butchers the score which IMO is a MAJOR contributing factor into how your emotions develop into those that express tears. So, yeah... he just didn't allow himself to dive into the last scene because he was pausing and talking and allowing those moments to slip by. Oh well, it is made to be on KZbin so, crying may not be an image he wants out there; which is totally respectable by the way, no judgment just observations.

An often overlooked but I find impactful scene. Is when Tonraq has Korra; post battle, in his arms while she's 'stuck' in the Avatar state. As she is clinging to life by herself in the Avatar state. Because she recognizes her dad is still alive(remember her last memory of him. He'd been tossed off the cliffside by Zaheer). Which is similar and different Aangs survival in the Iceberg. As it leads them both to grow from that point on. In order to figure their destiny, understand ways to better learn and provide balance as needed based on era.

^To this point, she was airbending the lava at Ghazan and it shows that. HOWEVER, avatars have been shown lava bending: Avatar Szeto (ATLA S2 Ep1), Avatar Kyoshi (ATLA S2 Ep5), Avatar Roku (ATLA S3 Ep6). Actually, Ghazan is the first NON-avatar shown lava bending, with Bolin being the second, which shows how special and rare the ability is, far more so than metal bending. Some think Bolin has the ability because he comes from fire and earthbending parents, so the combination enables that ability, as that would be why avatars can bend lava as well, but that isn't confirmed, obviously, and not a lot is known about Ghazan so can't narrow that one down.

@@lamentozs I've seen this theory about Bolin, and even though it makes sense, specially when you put the fact that only avatars were shown lava bending and they can bend both earth and fire, but I think, as everything Avatar related spirituality has a huge factor in this, both Ghazan and Bolin, even though they are earth benders, they have a fluidity and freedom to their spirits much like lava. And I also think just as Bolin, Ghazan can't metalbend otherwise he would've been the one administrating the mercury, so maybe, differently from a waterbender who can both heal and bloodbend, an earthbender can't lavabend and metalbend because lava and metal have such different subjects and uses different parts of who they are to bend. Just my theory, and I'm sorry if its a little confusing, English isn't my mother tongue. :D

About your thing on learning from enemies. In season one the equalists were about trying to stand up for non benders. After the revolution was stopped, the Republic City council (who were all benders BTW) were replaced by a President who was a non bender. This gave non benders a voice in politics and helped make things feel more equal. While people have mixed feelings about the President as a character, his establishment showed how positive change was brought after the conclusion in Season One. Yeah, that's one of the major themes of this show: Learning from your enemies/weighing motives vs methods.

Someone pointed this out and I can't unsee it but in all three seasons the (male) villains have physically violated Korra in different ways. Equalists chiblocked her and Amon locked her bending, Tarrlok bloodbended her, Unalaq's creepy tentacle went inside Korra's mouth and pulled Raava out and nowZaheer's Red Lotus poisoned her. That's.... something.

She wasn’t violated any way a male protagonist wouldn’t be though. Literally replace Korra with a male character and nothing changes. @ArcRogerr

That last shot of Korra is so poignant. The weight of three seasons worth of strife and suffering finally takes its toll on her this episode. Those hallucinations of her past enemies telling her the world doesn't need her? To me, that didn't come out of nowhere; it came from within and the poison just sussed it out. In that moment, I think we finally, truly see where's she at mentally and how much inner conflict she's had to repress and tough out. And now it's only made worse by her being confined to a wheelchair and the new airbenders vowing to pick up her slack. She's grateful to them, of course, but now she's also probably feeling worthless and inconsequential. She's probably thinking, "What's even the point of doing this anymore? The Airbenders were the ones who turned the tide against Zaheer. Maybe the world really doesn't need me. Maybe the Avatar really is, at best, irrelevant, and at worst, doing more harm than good." When you compare where she's at now to where she was in the beginning of the show, it's almost like night and day. Korra only ever wanted to be the Avatar, constantly glamorized it, built an identity and purpose out of it. But since episode 1 she's been slapped with one reality check after the next. She lost her past lives, nearly lost her bending, got kicked out of her own city, lost the approval of many people, lost the use of her legs, endured a string of traumatic events at the hands of extremists and revolutionaries all dead-set in the belief that the Avatar is ruining the world for one reason or another. Now she's finally starting to see through the eyes of her past foes and all who've looked down on her. She's coming to grips with the reality that being the Avatar isn't a gift; more often than not, it's a curse. And that hurts her deeply.

At the end of the season, Korra isn’t just physically broken. She’s mentally broken. For the whole show, her identity and perception of herself has been based around her identity as the avatar, and Korra is distressed when her status as the avatar is removed. In the season 2 finale, when raava is temporarily destroyed, this is displayed. But now especially, Korra is broken because Tenzin is essentially saying that the world doesn’t need her for now, that the airbenders can replace her. It’s supposed to be a comforting sentence from Tenzin to Korra, but it only confirms her greatest fears.

I like that they touched on the fact that a super powerful person who's main job is to keep balance and maintain the status quo may not actually be a positive influence on the world all the time. The technological leap between ATLA and LOK only happened because Aang was gone for 100 years so firebenders and earthbenders could produce new technologies together in the colonies. Imagine how far they could have come in the 10000 years since Wan if more avatars tried to foster relationships between the nations rather than keep them separate. Watching Korra at the end there is the second saddest moment in LOK to me after Korra on the glacier at the end of season 1 (where I believe it is hinted she is contemplating suicide). All she has ever wanted is to be the avatar, she had no friends growing up since she was kept in a compound until she was 17, her whole identity was tied to the fact that she was the avatar. All it has earned her in these three seasons is ever increasing psychological and physical damage. It all culminates in a feeling of worthlessness when her duties are taken over by the air nation. She succeeded, but at the cost of who she was. It shows her growth from season one when she was arrogant and rash, she is a much better person now, but is also a huge loss. I waver on it, but I think this is my favourite season of either show.

This season was much more in line with the principal of Yin and Yang. Gone is the dark/light good/bad one must dominate and triumph over the other for 10,000 years of season 2. Instead Zahir is a agent of chaos but he is not evil. He is even able to achieve enlightenment. Zahir is however too much Yang. He doesn't realize that order will naturally arise out of chaos. One can not exist without the other no matter how much you try. So season 4 shows how the world reacts and duality switches too much in the other direction.

Came here to see the potential crying at the end of this episode. I should have known because it's you, but this is definitely the one scene in the Avatar series as a whole that makes me outright cry besides the balcony scene and the Leaves From the Vine scenes. This one is by far the most bittersweet, because you're crying because Jinora gets to be a master and there's so many airbenders after almost 200 years to witness it (and that Aang can't see it), but then Korra sacrificed all of herself to get there.

i thought it was so interesting that they showed Korra how they did in the final scene. usually the mc in a show fights the bad guy, wins and goes on to the next fight like nothing happened. But showing Korra, when you're expecting her to be cheery and excited to join them all, a Korra who has gone through what seems like PTSD, longer lasting injuries and a struggle with self-identity it makes me wonder why people say Korra is trash. I dont remember much shows (with a large young audience) touching on mental health in such a way back then.
