King Kylie yeah, I admit that Iroh didn’t put as much effort into trying to help Azula as much as he could have. Iroh kind of gave up on Azula and I think the fact that everyone has given up on Azula is what really harms her Psychology at the end of the show. Her mom, her dad, her uncle. That’s why I think *spoilers for the comics* Zuko not giving up on her is what’s going to help her become a better person in the end.

Someone pointed out to me that in that iroh episode, Iroh experices little slices of fatherhood again. He calms a crying todler by singing a song he probably sang to his own son. He tries to teach the kids responsility for their actions. And then he has a heart to heart conversation with young man who's lost his way.

I remember watching this show when it was first aired. I had just lost my grandfather who had been like a father to me and I loved Iroh because he reminded me of my grandfather a lot. When I first saw the Tales of Ba Sing We I cried so hard when Iroh was honoring his son Lu Ten. I avoided the episode for years because I didn't want to deal with those emotions again. I can watch it now but it always gets me. It's why I live this show. I'm generally pretty emotionless but this show can pull every emotion out of me. I'm ready for her to watch season 3 because my favourite scene is a certain fight with a haunting piano sound track. I was in awe of that fight, lived how beautiful it was visually but wanted to throw up at the horror of it.

@tornadochaser2457
@tornadochaser2457 4 жыл бұрын
It's interesting because it definitely does feel like that. However, when she first joined the gang, she didn't fit in. She clashed with Katara, and even abandoned the group, deciding to go back and solving her indecisiveness after her talk with Iroh. It wasn't seamless getting her to simply join the group either, as Toph was against the idea and clashed with Aang. For such a headstrong character, Toph's interactions make sense and are definitely true to her character. However, she did fit into the group seamlessly soon, and its a testament to the show's writing that the strong chemistry created between the characters makes it even hard to remember that Toph wasn't with them through more of, and even all, of the series.
@hobogoat2
@hobogoat2 3 жыл бұрын
@@tornadochaser2457 I think the fact that Katara and her had issues as soon as she joined was one of the reasons her inclusion in the group felt so believable. If you’ve ever had multiple roommates at once, you might be able to relate a bit. In my life, a lot of my strongest relationships have started from some bad one-off interactions. Idk I think it added depth to their characters, and made their making up afterwards all the more cathartic.

A lot of people overlook Katara because she gets annoyed by the holy queen Toph a lot this season. Katara has so many great moments this season but none of them were mentioned :( Like how she was gonna heal Zuko’s scar, how she saved Aang’s life, led everyone in the desert and showed true leadership skills, how she saw her mom in the swamp, and she is ALWAYS there for Aang whenever he needs someone. Mako could also never sing leaves from the vine outside the show, which spoke volumes of his own struggle. Also leaves from the vines is one of the only songs that blindsided me with its meaning change, by just changing the tone and setting. Usualy when a song has two meanings the words hint heavily at it, which takes the suprize and stab of the knife away, that you get when a song relies more on tone. Truly a song that still makes me tear up. Watch out season 3 is slow and freaky and intense and soo sad in a different way than you have ever experienced before. Good luck

04:20 honestly now that I look back at this I do understand Katara's point of view. Katara grew up in the southern water tribe, a tribe that became smaller and smaller the longer the war went on. I can imagine when growing up in such a cold climate you would expect everyone to help with almost everything. So I get why she would be annoyed when someone joins her 'new little group/family/tribe' that only looks out for themself. Just as Toph is used to fending for herself and only herself, Katara is used to everyone looking after everyone. but yeah I love them all.

I kind of liked when Zuko went good. It was heart breaking when he decided to go bad again in the caves because you just want the guy to catch a break. At this point he's been through so much, and we finally get to see his backstory. By this point you start to feel bad for Zuku, and you can see that he's not a bad guy when it all comes down to it. You can see what Iroh sees in him. When he goes good after his turmoil, I felt like it was a nice break for him. I felt that he deserved some peace in his life. So it was that much more heart breaking when we see him turn on Aang in favor of Azula at the end of the season.

The reason I love Azula so much as a villain is because I feel genuine concern when she appears. With Zuko it was normal when he appeared, the encounter was expected and you know it was not a dire situation. However, when Azula appeared I was always like "Oh shit, Azula". She was one of the few characters who could best Aang in a fight, and even almost killed him at the en of season 2. The way she shot him with lightning while he was transforming broke the mold of villains being to naive or careless. When she shot him it blew my mind, like "FINALLY someone who takes action instead of waiting like an idiot."

I think my favorite aspect of Iroh’s Tale in Ba Sing Se, is that in this short Iroh is lamenting the fact that he didn’t get to live the father life with his son. In this episode it’s as if he is helping his son in different forms of his life. He soothes and makes a baby boy laugh, he teaches responsibility and honor to a group of young boys and finally he helps a struggling young adult find a way forward. So I can get her being upset by Toph beaviour in the chase which is justified by her story but was still pretty selfish in my opinion. JerodimusPrime SPOILERS MERPHY DONT READ THE REST OF THIS COMMENT UNIL YOU FINISH THE SERIES I loved Azulas arc. She went from being an undefeatable intelligent villain into a slow decline into insanity after May (Mai?) and Ty Lee’s betrayal. Her precise and calculated bending devolves into throwing out as much fire as possible, she becomes more rash and impulsive, she becomes paranoid that everyone is out to get her even by small imperfections such as missing a cherry pit or showing up 5 minutes late. Then she really becomes unhinged after her father decides to attack the earth kingdom without her, she begins to hallucinate about her mother after feeling unloved by her all her life, culminating in the final battle. Then there’s the moment she breaks, after she battles Zuko and Katara and for the first time ever, she loses. It’s an amazing arc that cements the fact that out of all the powerful people in the world; Zuko, Katara, Toph, Sokka, Suki, The Kioshi Warriors, Iroh and even the Avatar, the only person who can beat Azula IS Azula. (Azula is my favorite character if you couldn’t tell)

Katara had a couple of great moments this season, too. After Appa's stolen and they're all stranded in the desert, Aang, Toph, Sokka, and Momo are all either too high on cactus juice or too absorbed in their own misery/confusion to be very useful. It's Katara who keeps the squad going and all but leads them to safety. It's Katara who brings Aang back from the Avatar State in the desert. Then you've got Katara being a genuine friend to Toph in 'Tales of Ba Sing Se'. And even back in 'The Chase', when Katara was still butting heads with Toph, she was trying to get her to do chores and set up camp WITH them, trying to drive home the point that they were a team. In her own way, she was welcoming Toph to the squad. Whether she was right is up for debate, but it shows how Katara embodies part of what the Water Tribe is supposed to be all about, the way Uncle Iroh explains in 'Bitter Work': community, bringing people together, emotional strength. She's definitely the Mom of the group. It took me a while to really see it, but...yeah.

After Appa is lost, Aang, a devoutly peaceful vegetarian, kills for the first time. From a distance, he uses air to cut in half one of those flying creatures in the desert. Blink and you miss it. They could've made it obvious but they didn't. It's a small detail that they never highlight, but I really appreciate the subtlety. Edit: Season 2 Episode 11, at 19:21. Aang strikes. The body falls. Halfway to the ground, it clearly separates apart.

I'm still not sure if he did actually kill that wasp buzzard or just swatted it down with air. I always hated that possibility, (SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3!!!) especially given the conflict Aang deals with in Season 3. I mean he has all this turmoil over killing Ozai, who will kill or enslave literally thousands of people, yet because his best friend is missing (not even confirmed dead, just missing), he's ready to throw all his principles and cultural teachings out the window just like that? For an animal that wasn't even threatening them anymore and was just trying to get away? I get that Appa was his oldest friend and one of the few things remaining from his old life and culture, and I could definitely see him becoming much less carefree and more ruthless in tracking down Appa, but straight-up murder? Of a relatively harmless animal? Screw that. That's not Aang.

But, just because she has a tiny bit of goid in her, doesn't make her a good person. She never had a positive influence to draw out that good side. What I personally loved about Iroh finally getting as intense as he did is that, while we never saw this directly happen, we did see glimpses and got some hints that he was much more powerful and much more intense than he let on. There was a scene in Book 1 where he stepped into a duel between Zhao and Zuko, where the duel ended and Zhao tried attacking Zuko while he was walking away. Iroh grabbed Zhao's foot and forced him to stop firebending, and called him out for "acting this way in defeat." There was a scene with Iroh and Azula in Book 2 where he grabbed Azula's fingers as she was about to shoot lightning at Zuko, and just casually redirects it into the sky, and another where he calmly asks about his title, the Dragon of the West, and proceeds to burn everything down. And of course the episode in Book 1 where he gets captured by Earth Kingdom troops while taking a bath, and the various ways he fights against them, be it heating one of his cuffs and closing a troop's hand on it, or using his chains to manipulate the rocks they use. There's a few other scenes, but those few in particular are where we can see the intensity and the fire in Iroh's eyes. It's where we get just a glimpse of what made Iroh such a powerful enemy to the world when he was a General.

I loved his betrayal at the end because it was very obvious to me that he was "being good" just for the sake of Iroh. Zuko was still seeking the approval of his family without thinking of his own feelings. He was only "good" because he thought he had nothing left but when Azula offered him another chance, he took it so fast and I LOVED seeing it. Zuko needs to figure himself out before he can decide on a side cause up to this point, he was just stuck between pleasing his father and pleasing his uncle, and he hasn't really made any decisions for himself

I think Toph as a character is a stroke of genius by the writers because she's a person with a disability who turns her disability into unique skills specific to this universe. I also really like that while blindness is part of her character, she isn't physically dependent on the other characters like you would expect a blind character to be (in fact, she's almost the opposite).
