This episode was part of an event called "Countdown to the Comet". The new episodes of Avatar began airing on July 14, starting with "The Western Air Temple", followed by "The Firebending Masters", The Boiling Rock parts one and two, "The Southern Raiders", "The Ember Island Players", and finally Sozin's Comet parts one through four. The dark coat Katara wears while sneaking into the Southern Raiders' base is an item in the game Legends of the Arena and is named "Long Coat". When Katara is seen as a child in flashbacks, her winter coat with the crescent moon closely resembles the winter coat she wore in the Northern Water Tribe while mastering waterbending with Master Pakku. This is the only episode where Kya's name is mentioned and Hakoda is the only person to actually say her name out loud. In this episode, waterbending is seen performed as influenced by two primary opportune factors, that is the presence of a full moon and rain.[1] In addition, waterbending is also seen under the influence of strong emotion, yet another strong factor that determines the potency of the art's use. Aang shows lack of concern when Toph and Haru earthbend a tunnel into an Air Nomad painting and never mentions anything about the destruction of the atrium and fountain. This contrasts his thoughts about the destruction of the air temples in "The Northern Air Temple". However, it should be noted that the mechanist was making changes to the air temple for his own benefit, while Toph and Haru were trying to help escape a Fire Nation attack.

Your reactions were in sync with mine when I saw this episode when it aired. I was like Katara chill out Zuko has been hella helpful. Also when she snapped at Sokka. But... then finding out that Katara grew up with the thinking that if she had been faster or stronger her mom might be alive. Despite the fact they were just told to kill them off under late Azulon/Ozai's rule which is ironic to me. I can see now how Sokka and Hakoda could make peace with what happened moreso than Katara. They never had an innate power to create change as nonbenders. But Katara did just couldn't tap into it's full potential. **ironic because she was upset that the the Fire Nation killed her mom. However they were actually after her AND if they hadn't killed her they would have probably decimated the South Pole in retaliation for Kya's deception if discovered. Because she wasn't a waterbender. I think it would have been found out if they took prisoners.

Everything seemed fine until zuko hit aang with the Armor-Piercing Question: The episode ends with Zuko asking Aang what he plans to do when he faces Ozai, if he truly believes that violence is never the answer. Aang's got no answer. Batman Grabs a Gun: Katara, despite having previously vowed never to use bloodbending again, uses it against the current leader of the Southern Raiders, believing him to be the man who murdered her mother. This technique even momentarily catches Zuko off-guard, before he regains his focus and continues to question the man. Beware the Nice Ones: When enraged, Katara's waterbending is so powerful and so precise that she can halt individual raindrops mid-fall and then turn them into a swarm of deadly ice-daggers. Blade Brake: Azula does this with her hairpin. Cain and Abel: Now that they're on opposite sides, the need for subtlety is gone (and the start of Azula's mental deterioration in the previous episode certainly didn't help matters). Zuko: What are you doing here? Azula: Isn't it obvious yet? I am about to celebrate becoming an only child! Call to Agriculture: Subverted by Yon Rha, who is living a miserable life with a shrew of a mother. Character Development: Zuko and Katara get this the most. See Impossible Task below, and Zuko using his head to find out what was really bothering her. Complaining About Rescues They Don't Like: Katara is not amused when Zuko lies on top of her after he performed a Diving Save to save her life.

The Took a Level in Jerkass trope is shown when Katara following Azula's ambush, a sign of her going down the path of He Who Fights Monsters; it's implied that she's angry at Zuko since he indirectly caused her father to leave again and blaming him for leading Azula to the Gaang to ambush them in the first place. She then deliberately goad Zuko when the other cheer him, calls out Zuko for expecting her to trust him given what happened in Ba Sing Se, and accuses Sokka of not loving their mother enough. She finally calms down after finding closure, and being able to forgive Zuko.

When Sokka is recounting the day his mother died in a flashback, the black snow can be seen. The black snow was previously seen in "The Siege of the North, Part 1" and "The Puppetmaster" and, according to Sokka, warns of the Fire Nation's approach. During this flashback, he says, "Many of the warriors had seen the black snow before and they knew what it meant: a Fire Nation raid." This is the first and only time in the series where viewers see Kya's face and hear her voice. In "The Swamp", only her back is depicted. Katara's line in regards to Yon Rha, "Now that I know he's out there, now that I know we can find him, I feel like I have no choice," reflects Hama's line in "The Puppetmaster" in regards to bloodbending: "The choice is not yours; the power exists. And it's your duty to use the gifts you've been given to win this war!", as Katara later uses bloodbending on the man she believes is responsible for her mother's death. This is the last time Katara uses bloodbending in the series and the first time she willingly bloodbends as opposed to doing so out of necessity. This is the first time Zuko says Aang's and Katara's names out loud. This is the first time Jet has been mentioned on screen by name since "Lake Laogai". Whaletail Island was first mentioned in "Lake Laogai" as a place where Appa could have been taken after being bought on the black market. Zuko is the second person to push Katara out of the way of falling rocks, the first being Aang in "The Cave of Two Lovers". Aang's line, "Is it your turn to take a little field trip with Zuko?" is a direct reference to the previous three episodes, in which Aang and Sokka both went on individual journeys with Zuko, which inevitably ended with the two bonding. This is the first time Aang has a noticeable moral dilemma with killing the Fire Lord. This is the third time that the Western Air Temple is attacked by the Fire Nation, the first being when Sozin launched an assault on the air temple one hundred years earlier, and the second when Combustion Man attacked the temple. This is the last time Aang is seen fighting Azula in the series.

Only thing about this episode that I didn’t like was from what I remember Katara never really apologized to Asoka about what she said about him not loving his mom. That was so disrespectful to say and I personally needed a scene of her apologizing for that.
@lalalalisa415 жыл бұрын
It was very heavily implied that Katara saw her mom's dead body when she and her dad got back home. So can you imagine what seeing that could've done to her at that age? This also makes me wonder whether all this time if a part of Katara blamed herself for her mom's death. I mean, she was the last person to see her mom alive and she said it herself that she wouldn't be that helpless little girl anymore. It's sad to think about, but at least she's finally dealing with it because I don't think she ever properly grieved for her mom. With that said, Katara bloodbending that Captain was my favorite moment (the second being her stopping the rain), because her actually bloodbending him said so much more than any dialogue ever could. As I said before, this show just knows how to convey so much without saying anything at all. Also loved how by the end, it showed that it's okay to not always forgive. Most children entertainment usually pushes towards forgiveness, so the way ATLA handled this was fantastic as they did it in a way where it didn't come off as Katara being right or wrong in her decision to not forgive Yon Rha. It just showed us how she felt and it was completely understandable.
@candykane64805 жыл бұрын
It's possible she partly blames herself because her mother's death was due to the lie she told about her being the last Southern Water Tribe water bender. In the episode Katara even states this with grief in her voice. But I also think Katara thinks of herself as that little girl every time she remembers her mom, so her anger is mostly directed outward: towards her dad, Zuko, Fire Nation soldiers, and in this episode, Sokka.

@@candykane6480 Honestly just tells me that she bottled all of this up just to stay strong for her family, which is in line to what Sokka said about her stepping up and taking on so much responsibility after their mom died.

So Zuko risking his neck breaking into a fire nation prison to rescue Katara's dad wasn't enough to earn her forgiveness, but accompanying her on a vandetta quest was? That's kinda messed up.
