The Ty Lee betrayal is one of my favorite moments in the whole show. You don't see it coming, but the second it happens you INSTANTLY understand it. Ty Lee doesn't want to be here, she never did. Azula forced her to leave the circus and it's easy to forget that she's been a glorified hostage this whole time. Throughout the show she is always desperately trying to please Azula, and both Azula and the audience take it as loyalty. But this moment recontextualizes it all. She was never loyal, she was ...scared. And the only thing that could snap her out of it was Mai being in danger, because that's where her real loyalties lie.

I saw another person point out that what makes Ty Lee such a great character is that she’s so good at putting on a face that no one even realizes she has a secret to begin with, and at times she almost seems to believe it herself. But it’s all an act of self preservation. It’s not until the point where she realizes that continuing to play her part will lead to Mei actually dying right in front of her, that she can’t go along with it anymore.

Who pairs with 'he', whom with 'him' so try dropping he/him in place of who in the question to see if you should be using whom. All through the last season and a half, it's been almost a running joke how terrified everyone is of Azula. Back at the beginning of season 2, even Iroh chose to risk being captured by the Earth Kingdom over running into Azula. But back in The Drill, Mai was all, "She can shoot all the lightning she wants at me, I am not going in that wall sludge juice." It wasn't played very seriously at the moment, but it does show Mai's never really feared Azula all that much. Also, Zuko's never really had friends of his own before. As a kid, he spent more time hanging out with Azula's friends and with his mom. But now that he's trying to make friends for the first time, his first instinct is to serve them tea and talk about his uncle. It's all he knows, which is both kinda sweet and really sad.

Yes, Mai has never feared Azula. She likely plays the good lacky because she doesn't want to disappoint her family and risk their position within the Fire Nation, and because (very much like Toph) she was being stifled within her guilded cage and Azula was her only means of stretching her wings.

"Perfection and power are overrated. I think you are very wise to choose happiness and love." Uncle Iroh's advice to Aang back in Ba Sing Se is essentially the same choice Mei made. Azula represents power and perfection while, for Mei, Zuko is happiness and Love. "I love Zuko more than I fear you" was her way of saying the same thing in my opinion. And in the end Ty Lee made the same choice. Sadly Azula was raised and conditioned by Ozai to choose the other option. Such a great show!
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 8 ай бұрын
Iroh was, as usual, right. Because Azula chose power and perfection, she all but openly threatened Mai and Ty Lee into joining her, and assumed if loyalty wouldn't keep them in line, fear would. Mai saying she didn't fear Azula enough to go along with killing Zuko was a lot, but Ty Lee attacking her to save Mai was too much. The thought that the one thing she never had, love, was stronger than her most powerful tool, fear, shattered her entire worldview.

Also, small detail, but the fact that Zuko still had his breath of fire in the cooler is insanely impressive. When you think about it, there were already hints of Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal all along. They seemed completely relentless, but as soon as Azula wasn't there, they gave up relatively quickly everytime. Add the side glances they often gave each other or to Azula in her back, and you can actually see how they got progressively more fed up and less scared over time. Not only it was inevitable, but you could see it progress in the details.

Ty Lee and Mai are literally the only people Azula has ever been able to call friends. Granted her definition of "friends" is heavily distorted, but this was basically the only two people Azula believed she could trust turning on her; worse they turned on her for Zuko (only really true for Mai, but Azula will see it that way), the one person Azula must always be better than. That's going to be important later in this season.

The closest prior was The Drill; not that it was her thing, but it’s the only time that really comes close. She’d either been evaded by her quarry before (be it Zuko & Iroh, the GAang, or both together) or she’d won a victory, but this was her first outright loss… It’s actually impressive how she contrasts to the other antagonists in her success ratio, being so competent that the heroes can’t really beat her until now.

What she thought was her closest friends betrayed her and if that can happen who can she really trust? Props to the voice actress for Azula. That sound she makes when Te Lee takes her down says it all. This is the first time in the show she shows any fear or surprise. Even when her back was to the wall and fighting Iroh, Zuko and team avatar at the same time she was always in control of herself.

Seeing Azula's reaction to Mai's comment about loving someone more than fearing someone else is quite something. We saw a little about how she was raised, and taking more after Ozai than her mother, and we've also seen how she has little-to-no experience when it comes to interacting with anyone that's not in a military setting (even with her so called friends, they were typically commanded to do one thing or another). When it comes to things like love, she has little knowledge of how it works, and why someone would willingly choose it over following orders. It's quite sad, really.

"I'm a people person." My interpretation of that is Azula has plenty of experience being in the position where someone is completely helpless and at her mercy and completely afraid, and that she can tell the difference between someone telling the truth in that situation and someone who will tell any lie to get out of that situation.

It's incredible how the series, at least in the main areas, doesn't have any wasted characters. They are all interesting with layers and masks that fall as the series progresses. Mei always pretended to be disinterested but she evidently already showed dissatisfaction with Azula's interference in her relationship with Zuko. The episode also brilliantly placed the context of that guard, unfairly ratted out, to evoke one of Azula's qualities, when she reveals that she knows he wasn't the culprit because she thought she knew people. This prior judgment is thrown to the ground when Mei makes Azula fall down with her betrayal

Because you know what's coming I assume. Azula was seemingly born with some manipulative, cold, and calculating predilections but if she had been raised by a more loving and thoughtful parent perhaps she could have overcome her shortcomings, unfortunately she was born into an environment where her worse attributes were rewarded and the opposite punished. She is a "monster" molded by a man who cares little for anyone but himself, she never stood a chance. Zuko's exile was in the end a blessing.

Azula's greatest flaw is insecurity. As a child, she saw her grandfather order her father to kill her brother, and her parents killed him in response. Then her father had a full-on duel with her brother, scarred him, and banished him. All before she turned 14. She's obsessed with power because she's afraid the people around her will betray her, so she needs to intimidate them into submission. And it worked, until the moment Ty Lee hit her. That gasp was her worst fear becoming reality. She starts cracking in that moment.

Something Interesting I saw someone say, while going off of what you said, that this is one of the rare times we see Azula truly angry. Remember back on the beach episode where she briefly mentioned that their mom loved Zuko more than her? And then Mai said "I love Zuko more than I fear you". I think that was the TRUE trigger of what made Azula angry

Also because she prides herself on being able to read and stay two steps in front of everyone, and Mai's betrayal came out of the blue (to Azula at least), so it's a big blow to her pride, not to mention the shame of Ty Lee taking her down.

"I love Zuko, more than I fear you", that's a quote to live by. Azula, always treat people with fear, even her friends, so that line makes her furious, and us, very happy. And that's beginning of her end (no spoilers).

You've been saying a long time that you wanted to see something else from Azula other than her always being calm, cool and in control of every situation, and this episode definitely delivers on that. Mai and Ty Lee, especially Ty Lee, have both cared for Azula, at least to some extent, of course, but it was always a toxic friendship. Azula feeling that she had to control her only friends through fear shows that there are cracks in her 'perfect' exterior. Well that, and how socially awkward she is, as seen in "The Beach". I also love the progression you see in Zuko's firebending. At the start of the series he hadn't even mastered his basics, as Iroh pointed out to him, but now he can hold his own against his gifted prodigy of a sister, at least temporarily.

These book 3 episodes are so good and will continue to be. Your love of Mai pays off! I love also how Azula's response to the Earth King way back in the Ba Sing Se "It's terrible when you can't trust the people who are closest to you" kind of foreshadows Mai & Ty Lee's betrayal of her in this episode.

This episode really makes me start thinking about Azula’s mindset towards her brother and people around her. Zuko may have stolen all their mother’s love, but she’s dad’s favorite so it’s fine (it’s not). Besides, she can still push her friends and Zuko around so she’s really the one in control. She doesn’t need her friends to like her, she’s gotten by without love so far, so what’s it matter if Zuko has their affection (or at least Mei’s)? She has their loyalty, which is more important. And so what if father treats him like a war hero, she’s still his favorite. And it’s only a matter of time before he ruins everything anyway. But now she doesn’t even have their loyalty anymore. Mother’s gone, Zuko’s gone, Mei and Ty Lee are gone. All she has left is father’s respect. But that’s fine, she won’t let him down. After all, she’s perfect.

Two amazing moments: Mai understood, I think, that Zuko never meant to hurt her or dump her, and being close to Azula she had both perspectives: how terrible Azula was and how miserable Zuko was. So I think she understood where Zuko was heading and that he never meant her harm. If she could, she would have gone with him probably. Zuko's genuine smile when Hakoda hugs Sokka and Katara, it's just wholesome. He has healed, no more hatred (except perhaps against Ozai, understandable), no more shame. He found his place. And I'm sure him and Sokka are besties now xD

The reason we got the unfinished fight scene between Azula and Suki is because the episode was being told from Appa’s pov. Once he flew away he couldn’t witness the fights conclusion so the audience was left unknowing. Most episodes are told from a third-person narrative. “Appa’a Lost Days was a first-person (Appa) narrative.

One thing I have always loved about Zuko and Mei's relationship is that they aren't afraid to actually communicate with each other. Sure they have some issues with it sometimes, but they still do it and never once (that I can recall) do they tell each other they don't want to talk about it. Mei may not understand Zuko's decision, but she loves him and supports him and is willing to turn on Azula to save him even though he's just hurt her, just like Zuko is willing to lock her in the cell and leave without saying goodbye to protect her. Some people may not like them together and they may be a bit odd, but they have the healthiest relationship out of everyone.

The look on Ty Lee’s face during the tense confrontation between Mai and Azula was that of a child when parents argue. Psychologically a long, long fuse has been lit in Azula’s mind. By this point, everyone hates Azula. She's a sociopath. That betrayal moment is amazing. First, it actually makes sense for Mai and Ty Lee if you understand their characters, but it still feels like a surprise. Second, it is the beginning of learning to feel empathy for Azula, and the beginning of her unraveling. Those were her only friends. By the final episode, I actually cried for Azula. It is possible for a sociopath to learn empathy, but her father basically made that impossible for her. I also like Chit Sang.

This episode made me realize that out of all of the gaang, I feel that as everyone grew up Sokka likely became the closer friend to Zuko later in life; not that the rest weren't, but i can see them both forging an almost brotherly connection with a dynamic like the actual brothers Mako and Bolin. Not only are Zuko & Sokka essentially the same age, but they even have somewhat similar or atleast complimentary personalities. I can even see them both learning to confide in one another since they both had to work through their at-first twisted notions of what being a man means and what it means to be someone who can be both strong for those you care about while also learning to open up and let down your guard.

Meteorites are usually made up of rock and metals (iron). A comet like Sozin’s are made up of rock and ice with only traces of metal in them so Toph really wouldn’t be able to do much with it. Also, distance seems to matter in bending and especially with metalbending. Toph seems to need to have physical contact with metal in order to bend it. There’s no way she’d be able to get close enough to affect it.

You'll come to kind of fall in love with Azula, not as she is, but as she could have been. She as you can tell is hurt by the betrayal of her friends, and that is the beginning of her fall. It's not the same love of a character as normal, as it's a mourning love, but I don't want to explain much more of that. As you've been able to see since she was first introduced she's MEGA powerful and is a terrifying sight to behold, no matter where you are. I mean, she effortlessly took over Ba Sing Se.... What?! So to see her finally start to falter in this episode where Mai and Ty Lee betray her, it hits so much harder because Ms. Perfect is no longer so perfect... Once you have full context of the whole show I'd suggest rewatching it in about a month, right around Christmas time start watching it again with full context and see all the nods that went unnoticed by the audiences first time watching. It'll hit harder around Christmas, A, and B it's a great comfort show for being stuck inside from the cold.
