Despite some other comments, you were correct that these two episodes aired together. Oddly, The Library and The Desert were also aired together, but Netflix doesn't combine those episodes. I'm not sure of the reason, but this whole end portion of S2 aired sporadically over a 6 month period with several 2-part episodes. Rewatching it now, you don't experience the full emotional impact of nearly every episode ending with a cliff-hanger/teaser only to have to wait weeks or months till the next episode would air. It's crazy that this show is 18 years old, but I still vividly remember all the hype and marketing built up around Ba Sing Se and some of the upcoming episodes.

The season finale is the only other double episode this season but again Netflix doesn't double it which is really weird. It didn't double up the season 1 final either, but does combine all the ones that aired the same day in season. It actually makes season 3 look like the shortest even though it has one more episode than the other 2.

As a freeze-frame bonus, when the Cabbage Merchant's cabbages are destroyed, you can, indeed, see cabbage slugs. Customs were right to destroy them! The plans for The Drill were visible on the desk of The Mechanist from the Northern Air Temple - clearly he'd already handed the designs over to the Fire Nation. I love how Aang's progress as a bender and fighter is displayed by all the times he's blasted back against a wall and knocked out. This time he collapsed on his heels instead of just going down!

Loved the double episode. Was not expecting that! Also, by the time you get to the Drill episode, that marks the halfway point of the series. Everything team avatar has done has lead up to this point: Aang now bending three elements and using them well, having Toph as mentor/new character for the group, Katara being way more powerful with her water bending and Sokka accepting the role as the idea guy. We lost Appa but the team has hope. And yea, Momo is just the chill character of the team 😅

Of course, the thing that made this episode so great, at least for the Gaang, was that each member of the group got their moment(s) to shine. For Sokka, this meant coming to terms with the loss of Princess Yue in Book One and moving on to better things with Suki. In my opinion, this was one of the series' finer moments in terms of romances, as it handled Sokka's Suki/Yue dilemma really well. Though Sokka felt the need to protect Suki -- especially after what had happened with Yue -- Suki proved once again that she could hold her own when she saved Toph from drowning. Speaking of which, Toph had some excellent moments here too. Not only did she use her family's Golden Seal to get them all tickets for the ferry (which turned out to be moot, but whatever), she also put her earthbending skills to good use, rescuing the party multiple times throughout the episode. ("'Thanks for saving my life, Toph.' 'Hey, no problem, Sokka.'") I also still love Toph's little crush on Sokka and her kissing Suki by mistake. ("You can go ahead and let me drown now.") Even Aang and Katara got the spotlight at one point, when they both worked together to defeat the ginormous serpent of Serpent's Pass. Additionally, Aang's Appa woes from last week were settled here thanks to Katara and the birth of Hope, the baby of the family the group was escorting. All things considered, this turned out to be an emotionally rewarding episode for the whole Gaang -- particularly for Suki and Sokka, who parted ways with a definitive smooch.

Actually they were aired together. The special was called "The Secret of the Fire Nation" in reference to the drill. But it's weird because 10 and 11 and 19 and 20 were also aired together but they weren't combined and neither were the final 2 episodes of Book 1. Book 3 they combine all the ones that were aired together.

The overly dramatic pregnant lady reminds me of a certain version of one of the main characters that we'll meet just before the big finale.
@GirlofCultureАй бұрын
Thank you by the way for 2 episodes. We don't mind. 😉 So, here is the drill. Which does not exist in Ba Sing Se. Hope that's clear. 😁 It was fun seeing Mai and Ty Lee back in action again, particularly the latter, who took down the entire Terra Team with her chi blocking technique. In a clever bit of writing, this gave Team Avatar the idea to destroy the drill from the inside (much like Ty Lee had done to the earthbenders), which led to a fun covert ops mission. Sokka's plan to steal the schematics, for instance, went off without a hitch thanks to Katara's steam-freezing technique. Of course, the best parts of this episode came after Aang's aha moment, suggesting they sabotage the drill, bit by bit, until Aang could deliver a final blow. For Aang, this meant going toe to toe with Azula on top of the drill, which gave us some of the series' best action animation we've seen in awhile. Not only was the choreography at its usual best, but it was also the first time Aang really put his earthbending skills to good use -- most notably that kick-ass rock glove, made from Sung's falling boulders. Toph and Katara teaming up to plug the drill was another great sequence -- especially for these two, as their dynamic is usually them butting heads. I also got a kick out of Sokka cheering the ladies on, much to Katara's disdain. However, I think the definitive moment of this episode was Aang "winding up" to give the drill one last thwack, just as the main theme kicked in. (So awesome!) Overall, just a beautifully executed chain of events, especially with Aang evading Azula's last desperate fire punch at the end. She is still very talented and powerful.
@nathanielreik6617Ай бұрын
If you remember the couple that Zuko decided not to rob in "Zuko Alone" they are the same ones from this episode. Also the war minister in charge of the drill was also the one who was in charge of collecting designs from the Mechanist at the Northern Air temple, and we saw at the end getting the war balloon. Just like the previous two episodes, these two also aired together and were called The Secret of the Fire Nation referencing the drill. Suki even said they were working on something secret and big. For some reason Netflix doesn't combine any during season 1 and this is the only one in season 2 they combine despite there being others that were together when they aired. Season 3 has several. Netflix lists 16 episodes which would make it the shortest season but in actuality there are 21 episodes and it is the longest. I think for season 3 it combines 10 and 11, 14 and 15, and the entire four episode finale. Also funny you compare the serpent to a sea horse because in the box set of Book 2 they included 3 chibi shorts and one of them very briefly showed the serpent looking normal and then the camera pulls back to show it as a sea horse in a fish tank.

Yeah this was two episodes thank you Netflix very cool. Aang is on his emo arc really giving Zuko and hell Sasuke a run for their money. Well at least Iroh and Jet are in the same boat of probably been war criminals or somehow like that. Iroh firebending the tea is probably one of his just straight upp fumbels because there is no way you could argue a benefit there. At this point even with Zuko being a bit of a dick he is still a better choice than Jet especially with Iroh with him. Iroh noticing the baby that Zuko indirectly helped by not robbing the parents is pretty cool. The bit with Longshot never saying anything but his firends getting some deep meaning out of it is way funnier than its supposed to be. Mais personality is just peak. She is so close to being a big tiddy goth gf but its still too good. Best girl in the series maybe even franchise I will die on this hill ya fools. Was about to comment the same, but thought I'd best check first. Always find it odd when reactors mispronounce things they've only ever heard pronounced correctly. Like I remember someone pronouncing Umbrasyl (Vox Machina) as Oom-brass-ill, even though they'd heard it spoken moments ago. And Umbra is already a word for shadow, AND it's a black dragon. Wonder if there's a connection between reactors and mispronunciation lol
@RunningTogetherАй бұрын
@@tinystegosaurus587 I believe it’s because they are reading subtitles (in most cases). “Mei” could reasonably be pronounced either way from the spelling, and while they heard the correct pronunciation at some point, they didn’t hear it often (at least in this case), so it’s somehow easy to mispronounce it from the subtitles in your head. I think that’s often the cause for various reactor mispronunciations. Often they pronounce phonetically based on their native language for instance (among non-native-English speakers).
@tinystegosaurus587Ай бұрын
@@RunningTogether That does often seem to be the case, especially since I assume they have subtitles on to avoid having to go back if they miss something and break the flow, whereas watching at home you don't really care if you have to go back for a second. Mai is pronounced May in the show, not My. FYI mispronouncing the names in triggering because of the movie that shall not be named. Secondly each Book of ATLA has at least 20 chapters/episodes. Book 3 has 21. For some reason Netflix chose to combine episodes in Book 2 and 3. So the Netflix episode do not match the show episodes. Look at the episode runtime if it's over 22 minutes on Netflix it's multiple episodes. However Nickelodeon handled the airing of ATLA very poorly. In season 1 they aired weekly until the Great divide, then no new episodes for months. One reason so many hate Chapter 11 of Book one so much is that it keep re-airing during that span. They had similar airing gaps in Season 2 and 3 but when they finally did are a new one they aired multiple the same day. This (12 & 13) was one of the ones they aired back to back. In season 3 their was another extra long delay in airing episode so when they got around to the final chapters they dedicated a whole week to new episodes then the 4 part finale aired the same day. So when you get to the last episode on Netflix be prepared to watch 4 episodes at once which is how we all did. Iroh didn't know the Ruff Rhinos were coming. When he heard them after they had stopped he said "What now?"
@nathanielreik6617Ай бұрын
For the longer gaps, most seasons have mid season breaks. Book 1 it was between 13 and 14, Book 2 the one between the last one and this one was the mid season break (also 10 and 11 and 19 and 20 were the only other episodes aired the same day this season), and then Book 3's long gap is it's mid season break. Also there were multiple gaps in Book 1 before "The Great Divide". 2 weeks between 4 and 5, 2 weeks between 6 and 7, 2 weeks between 8 and 9, and 2 weeks between 10 and 11 (and there were more after but you mentioned there were others after "The Great Divide")
