1. *This* is the episode the *entire show* up until this point has been building up to. Having all these character show up again was a *treat* . And the way Azula & Ozai were able to ultimately counter what is otherwise a really clever plan that WOULD have worked in any other circumstance was such a well executed "Oh, sh!t!" moment But the culmination of Zuko's character arc is the high point of the show, at least for me. The moment he redirected Ozai's lightning back at him, quite literally throwing what he dished out back in his face was the moment he solidified himself as the best character in the show. 2. I actually kind of love that we don't SEE Iroh's jailbreak. We see the buildup to it across multiple episodes, him warning the one guard that was nice to him and the aftermath. It leaves you to imagine the absolute BEAST he must have been in his prime.

Fan theory. The reason the fire nation royal family is the leaders it's because in their blood they have amazing physical skill and fire bending Talent. Some more than other family members but yeah.
@Arkayjiya3 күн бұрын
@@theinsurance2450 I mean it's not really a theory, we do see in the show that bending talent while partly from training is also partly hereditary, it's not a perfect predictor, but it tends to hold true in average at least. And we know both that the firelord title can be the subject of an Agni Kai and that refusing a challenge is seen as weakness from various comments. Now that doesn't mean that anyone can just barge in and challenge the Fire Lord, but it does mean that in politically tense situation where refusing could be the straw that breaks the camel's back so the royal family would need to be ready for this, and that whichever family manage to remain the royal family for well over 200 years probably cultivates a very high talent for firebending. This is more or less directly implied by the show itself. I mean we saw they even consider bending power when choosing partners.

This whole invasion was Sokka's idea but for one of the most important decisions Katara gives her suggestion, Hakoda gives his feeling about it, but Sokka let's Aang make the final call and he would back which ever he chose. Shows how much Sokka has grown that he's able to step back and let Aang make the choice and not force him to do it and how much Aang has grown that he's able to make the choice and be worthy of that trust from Sokka. A far cry from back in Book 1 during "Jet" when they argued about who the leader of the group was and Sokka said Aang was just a goofy kid and Aang actually agreed.

Zuko’s big turnaround, the moment that made all the bad decisions and mistakes worth it! That’s why I love these episodes so much! Fun fact: those giant nets they used to protect the harbor, those were real. Not necessarily that size in real life, but as most cities in the past were built on shorelines militaries would net or rope off narrower sections of river or bays to prevent sneak attacks. Also I need to admit a certain jealousy of Aang here, not for his power or wisdom, but for his skills with a razor. I guess he’s had years of practice, but I wish I could clean off my egg that easily.

This is why it's referred to as a rare tea
@gatr28974 күн бұрын
Man better late than never, Zuko. Those scenes with him and Ozai are just, such core, iconic Avatar. Zukos whole arc laid out on the ground in front of him in that moment, it's really satisfying. Azula really defeated the entire invasion singlehandedly. It was her that gained the intel that it was going down months in advance by using such a bold strategy as impersonating the Kyoshi warriors, she warned Ozai and presumably came up with the idea to take his place temporarily and she stalled out the entire eclipse. If she hadn't then Zuko would've probably linked up with the gang right then and there and Ozai would be completely through. It all would've been a sinch with the element of surprise, it's crazy how it all came down to her. Sokka once again proves that he's the goat. He's spent parts of this season doubting his abilities but seriously nowhere in the series does he feel useless, I feel like it would've been easy to mess up a character like him but he's just so well written I love him. This doesn't normally happen to me when watching the scene in question, but when they showed Aang crying after it was decided that the adults would stay and be captured, I started crying too this time, you could really see the pain in his face and it's just devastating knowing how badly he wanted to make this invasion a success. People point out a lot that when Sokka asked Aang on the cliff what made him feel so sure about them winning, the answer he gave, something about not being able to let himself fail, is a lot darker an answer than you'd really expect out of him. The toll this war has taken on him in just a few months is visible to see, and yet through all the pain he's being the best he can be. That scene where he shaves his hair and stands looking out, with a koala sheep walking up to him, that's Aang, pure Aang.

Zuko finally moving forward from his fumbel. The reason he said that he had to learn on his own is because Iroh tried to teach him but he didn't really take it in before now in the Fire nation. Meaning that he had to change and learn on his own. We saw in Zuko alone that Ozai didn't exactly have the best relationship with his father Azulon so in his mind what he did to Zuko was a good parenting move. Instead of even trying to break the cycle this man truly embraced it as he even straight upp said to his sons face that he would have killed him just because his father told him to and beyond some comic bs the only reason was that Zuko just wasen't as good as Azula. The closest to pride this man gets is the tought that Zuko could potentially kill him and be like him. We also see that purely strenght wise Ozai probably is stronger than Iroh as with just the smalest sliver of sun he could emediatley shoot out lightning somthing that even Iroh had to warm upp to during midday. Conversly since its also a mental thing Ozai was simply so certain that he wanted to kill Zuko that he could just go for it while Iroh still had to clear his mind just in case. Azula in ways is probably even worse than Ozai as we clearly see her take pleasure in hurting people just because while Ozai only really does it for power. With Azula on loving to hate her I have seen one reactor who just genuenly hated her trough and trough even more than Ozai so its not necesaryily a universal tought. With Azula while teh parenting from Ozai didn't help she still clearly just doesent have enough agnst about her situation to truly be tragic. She maybe is a bit sad that her mother tought she was a monster even though she herself acnowledges that she is. Then again even Iroh treats her as a lost cause so there probably is no changeing her anymore. Well the war aint over yet. This is lowkey on the earth king for not saying that he blabed to the kyoshi warriors but considering he never even left teh palace before a few days I can give him a pass for not having political savvy.

Here's the the thing Zuko did have to go through everything himself. Even back in Ba Sing Se when Iroh was talking about "someone pushing a destiny" on Zuko, Iroh was still doing the same thing as Zuko's father. Zuko can have these influences but in the end it would have to be his own experiences and decisions to form his own future he wants.

From now, we get the best arc in all of Avatar. The Zuko redeption arc.
@nathanielreik66173 күн бұрын
I agree with Bethany that it's not really an age cut off for redeption because while often we see younger characters with at least the potential to be redeemed there are some exceptions even in this show. Iroh before the death of his son was joking about possibly burning Ba Sing Se to the ground; we don't know when exactly Jeong Jeong deserted the Fire Nation but he trained Zhao so I would say probably no more than a decade so he was still older; and arguably you could say Pakku had a bit of a redemption giving up his rule of not training women to water bend.

It's something to be able to lie through Toph's senses. I think the only ways to do that really are if you really believe it's true (even if it's factually wrong) or if you're a complete psychopath.
@metacat31063 күн бұрын
Yeah, it's not really a particular age, and it's not like their experiences 'write off' their actions. The person is still responsible for what they do, but if they go through a process of redemption then they can take responsibility for their actions by trying to better the world around them. For example, look at Iroh and what he does for people around him. Yes, part of that is from the loss of his son, but probably some of that is from realising how harmful his actions were in the wars he took part in, and so he now tries to help people as much as he can. Even with the classic quote "no, she's crazy and needs to go down" about Azula doesn't necessarily mean she will never have a chance at redemption, just that right now she isn't in a place where that change is possible. If you look at her situation, everything is going well for her (aside from social skills as we saw with the beach episode), she has power, she has her father's attention, she has people that follow her, she keeps winning. Unless some or all of that is disrupted, then she won't be able to see that things are actually wrong. She is really the opposite of Zuko, and for Zuko getting what he wanted after never having it was what made him realize that what he wanted wasn't right and wasn't him. So Azula needs to experience not getting what she wants in order to break that illusion and hopefully come to a place where she can change.

In a rare continuity error, Ming brings Iroh What Jade tea. White Jade is the plant Iroh poisoned himself in the beginning of Book 2. It should have been White Dragon Bush tea. :)
@devinburns25354 күн бұрын
No really an error. The creators of the show made a vast world. It's entirely possible the tea the guard brought iroh was white dragon, but she misremembered the name and called it white jade. Its also entirely possible that since it is a rare tea, there is a way of processing the plant that makes it safe to drink. Albeit a difficult process hence the tea being rare. Much like how almonds are highly toxic unless heated enough the cyanide on them burns off rendering them safe for consumption even in our world mugwort and wormwood are used by people to make various teas and both can be quite fatal if too much is drunk. Or it's prepared incorrectly. St. Johnswort is also a toxic plant that people can use if prepared properly. So it's entirely possible the got the tea from a source that was able to prepare it properly so it can be drunk in small quantities. But due to the nature of the episode they weren't able to go into detail

A part of the argument Zuko has with the Firelord a lot of people miss. Ozai justifies his actions by claiming that the hardship he put Zuko through was for the sake of teaching him, echoing a similar statment Zuko makes in season 1 about how his struggle has made him strong, made him who he is. Zuko here rejects that. Cruelty and pain can just be cruel and pointless., and people finding it in themselves to overcome it never justifies putting people through it in the first place.

Sokka's presentation failure is why back in his swordmaster episode I said I think his problem was mostly nerves and a feeling in inadequacy. He thinks he has all these expectations and he's unsure of himself as to whether he can actually pull it off. It's why he randomly felt like he was a load to the others before he learned from Piendao. BTW Zuko's mom is never followed up on in the show. Instead, it got a comic storyline after the show ended. The following is a spoiler for the finale so stop reading otherwise. Regarding Zuko not attacking Ozai during the eclipse and saying it was Aang's destiny? Iroh has a similar answer later. He says if he were to take out Ozai, "it would be seen as a brother killing a brother for power, and the only way for it to end peacefully is for the Avatar to do it." So if Zuko were to take out his father, it would be seen as a similar power grab. And probably just lead to a similar stance, where you would likely see Ozai loyalists looking to undermine or even assassinate this upstart, and try to put Azula on the throne or something.

@IamnotJohnFord22 сағат бұрын
I've always had thoughts on why Zuko didn't just run Ozai through with his swords. The guards are just outside the door. Ozai dismissed them so they could have a private conversation. But, I'm betting they didn't go far. Any fighting would've ended with Zuko facing numerous people. Ozai is likely a skilled fighter, and he as likely has concealed weapons on his person or throne. Zuko is ready to cut ties with his father but not kill him. He just took a major step in being his own man. But, to kill his own father? No way. If he did kill Ozai he would be labeled am assassin and killed under the orders of Azula when she grabbed the throne. Zuko said his peace so that bridge was burned. He can't go back even if he wanted to. He can't back slide like before. He could have easily freed Iroh amidst the confusion, and they could've gotten away together. But, he needed to say out loud what he said.

I think once you're old enough to take accountability for your own actions, and at that point it's more your responsibility and choice to make those decisions, but you continue to do wrong, that's when you're too far gone. Accountability isn't easy to accept for people and it gets harder and harder the further down you go towards a specific path, because as humans we get more and more set in our ways. That's where the cutoff is. When you're too far gone to accept any form of accountability, and are perfectly fine with pinning your actions on external factors.

@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I don't think it's a definitive number, because life circumstances also influence or force people to grow up faster or slower than others, and have to accept responsibility for their own actions and life. I think it'd be the moment you're the only one who can bail you from your own actions, and at that point you still refuse to take ownership, then you're too far gone.
