One of my favorite episodes. Roku's story is appropriately tragic and the revelation that Sozin wasted the rest of his life searching for the Avatar is the perfect way to hold a mirror up to Zuko's obsession with his "destiny."

The bit with Fang curling up around Roku as the volcanic ash overcame them always gets to me. Animal companions refusing to leave their humans during their final moments is just guaranteed to get me emotional, lol. This is one of my favorite episodes of the whole series. Genius writing. And I love the subtle commentary on generational trauma. Things that happened generations ago don't have to continue to drive people in what they do. Everyone has the power to resolve the bad by working on themselves and become better people. Though that's often easier said than done.

Roku and Sozin had very similar backgrounds. The highest nobility in a peaceful and prosperous nation. The biggest difference was that whilst Sozin read about other nations and made assumptions about them by comparing them unfavourably with his own, Roku went out and actually experienced those other nations. he met the people, and learned from them. He saw firsthand that no one type of people was superior to any other The exact same lesson Iroh made sure to teach Zuko, back when he taught him about redirecting lightning

Season 3 is full of glorious storyboarding. As I'm sure has been mentioned, the way Zuko's journey mirror's Aang's throughout the entire show, especially the third season, and the way Zuko amd Iroh's discussion flips the perception of imprisonment. Visual gold.

I love how Roku and Sozin's little rough housing when they were young perfectly mirror's how Roku died. A force of nature (The tree root/the volcano) caused Roku to need help, Sozin offered his hand/assistance, but ultimately let him fall.

No joke, this is easily in my top 3 favorite episodes of the entire show. The fact that they told such an epic origin story of two friends destined for greatness ,who's convictions set them on opposite paths, souring said friendship and setting up the conflicts future generations have to deal with, in only ~22 minutes is beyond impressive. It hits even harder since it gives context to why Roku sees himself as a failure and reveals Zuko's lineage.

This is how you tie everything together in one episode. 30 minutes of nothing but pure genius throughout. Many questions answered. It's not just "fate" that Iroh was referring to. Remember that Azula only takes after her father and grandfather and didn't inherit from their mother. Zuko inherited some of his father's narcissism but also inherited his mother's compassion
@snvhill
@snvhill 26 күн бұрын
A little bit oversimplified. Remember, the same could be applied to Iroh but he got better. And, in a strange way, Azula resembles Iroh more than Zuko does. Her plotting, her (twisted) awareness of other's emotions and wants, he ability to look a little further into the future... it's weird, and it's easy to overstate it (I couldn't figure out a way to tone this down without writing a paragraph or three) but it is there.
@illyahrthebard3303

@@snvhill That's the point. Iroh knows what it means. He knows what it feels like. Although he started less vindictive than his brother, he still joked about burning Ba Sing Se to the ground. 6:15 Keep in mind, Roku scared Sozin SO BADLY that he literally didn't attempt any more conquests while Roku was alive and then wiped out The Air Nomads just to delay the next Avatar. A fruitless endeavor, driven by pride and fear. Just like Zuko in the beginning.

And you can tell with how he worded his last line (around 8:55), saying how he "wasted" the last years of his life, that there is definite shame as well. Even if he wouldn't admit it, Sozin was ashamed deep down, whether it was being humiliated by Roku, betraying his best friend's trust, or some combination. All out of some twisted idea of "spreading the prosperity" of the nation he's so proud of, even if it literally sacrifices everything else. Which ties it all back to Zuko and Iroh. Because pride isn't the opposite of shame, but it's source.

Fun Fact: We've seen Sud, Roku's Earthbending master already. He is the silhouetted Earth practitioner in the opening. Which means we've now seen all 4 silhouettes: Water: Pakku, Earth: Sud, Fire: Azula, Air: Aang. Also, Sud is also based off of concept art originally made for Toph before they started working on the character. Bonus Fun Fact: Sozin's stance directly mirrors Imperialistic Japan's stance in the start of WWII. Specifically their idea "Dai Toa Kyoeikan" or "The Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" which was to unite China and the South Pacific under Japanese rule. Bonus Fun fact: This is Iroh's first speaking role in Book 3. But contrary to popular belief, the Director's commentary on this episode admits they planned to have Iroh be silent for the first few episodes even before Mako's death. Bonus Less Fun Fact: Roku and Sozin shared birthdays and were born on the same date (evidenced by both turning 16 when Roku's identity is revealed as per tradition), Sozin was 82 years old when he started the war (and 102 when he died), so Roku died at the age of 82. Sozin also would have been around 94 or so when Aang was trapped in the iceberg as Aang was born as soon as Roku died and he's 12. So maybe it was a good thing he stayed under for a few more years.

Sozin's speech about sharing the Fire Nation's prosperity is such a fantastic depiction of justifying colonialism. also, if no one manages to mention it or if I missed someone already did: In the last scene Iroh is always shown in the light while Zuko is shown behind the bars and in darkness until the very last moments when the light moves to illuminate him. Such a great scene.

“Make sure he gets your good side.” More secrets from the Kyoshi novels, the Fire Nation puts heavy emphasis on symmetry in art, something obviously impossible with Zuko. This also reflects ancient Japanese culture: the body was believed to be a sacred gift and as such deformities were usually not represented in art. A particular example would be Masamune Date, the One-Eyed Dragon and one of the most famous daimyo is Japan’s history.

2 interesting extensions on Sozin and Roku's dynamic: (2 levels of spoiler for the most recent novel in the "Chronicles of the Avatar" series: _The Reckoning of Roku_ ) Mild Spoiler (it's early in the novel): It was originally Sozin's mother's idea to gift Roku with his Crown Prince hairpiece, but she wanted him to think of it as "a leash, to remind the Avatar where his true loyalty lies" (Sozin rejected this interpretation when she proposed it to him, but thought the gift would be a good idea anyways - a bit of a theme with him) Slightly more spoily bit ahead: Not only were Sozin & Roku born on the same day, but so was Roku's minutes-older twin brother, Yasu. Roku & Yasu's clan were affluent, so they were sent to the Royal Fire Academy for Boys alongside young Prince Sozin. Yasu & Sozin were the more rambunctious types whereas Roku was a bit more reserved, and he was worried they were starting to leave him behind. When they were 12 (four years before the Fire Sages would reveal Roku as the new Avatar), Yasu woke up Roku in the night to sneak out & for a swim (just the two of them, as Sozin was on lockdown for accidentally burning some priceless artwork while trying to produce blue flames). A storm was beginning to roll in, and as the water started getting choppier, Roku wanted to go back to shore, while Yasu wanted to see if he could reach the sandbar, saying he'd send up some fire to let Roku know he made it - just as they agreed to split, they were both tossed under by a nasty wave. Roku resurfaced. Yasu was never seen again, his body lost to sea. Yasu had long been the one who stood up for Roku when he got picked on, and Sozin made a vow to himself to be the kind of person Yasu was (they both shared an interest in pushing their limits, especially when it comes to bending) and protect the remaining twin.

Aside from everything else in this great episode which really ties things together (insert Kronk's "It's all coming together") one little funny bit to catch is that Sokka is arguably talking from experience if you remember back to S1 Ep. 7 Winter Solstice Part 1 The Spirit World where after getting back using the bathroom is one of the first things he says when Katara talks to him. We also see Roku "fighting" a volcano which we kind of seen Aang do on a smaller scale in S1 Ep14 The Fortuneteller; with something else there one could draw... but spoilers. Also shout out to Roku's dragon best pal Fang sticking with him to the end.

There's quite a bit of symbolism in Zuko's scene with Iroh at the end. They make it look as though Zuko is the one who has been imprisoned, which he has been with him trying to live up to his father's expectations & his internal turmoil. Iroh on the other hand seems to be free, because in his own way he is more free than Zuko, despite being locked up.

It's not math, it's not going to be absolute like that. This is just the conclusion Iroh reached after his time looking into the history and from his experiences with Zuko, that he's in this unique space where he isn't fully brainwashed like Azula and has been conflicted between his role in the Fire Nation and what is right for him to do. So in that sense it lines up because Iroh knows Zuko.

Personally I think the outcome might have been avoided had Roku encouraged Sozin to actually SEE other nations. Staying in one place limits your perspective. Also, as for why Roku was determined to stop the volcano: Volcanoes can have widespread and devestating consequences, and we see Sozin comment on how he feels the rumbling 100 miles away - an eruption of sufficent magnitude could create an effect like what happened with irl Mt. Tambora (Indonesia) in the early 1800's - smoke and ash was ejected so high that atmospheric currents picked it up and a blanket covered wide swathes of the Earth, reducing sunlight availability for photosynthesis and causing crop failures worldwide, in what they called "the year without a summer". Some places in Europe & North America allegedly saw sporadic snowfall and frost into June, July and August (according to Britannica). Estimated death toll is 80k+ (keeping in mind that the global population of the time had only recently topped 1 billion) I think this is the best justification that can be drawn up to try and explain Roku's choice to stay and fight the volcanoes, maybe an instinct from a past incarnation who had to suffer through the aftereffects of such an eruption (maybe as a result of the failure of their predecessor 👀👀👀 - gimme a show, Avatar Studios lol)

My guess is that Sozin had been surrounded by nothing but yes men for 12 years while Roku was away. So for 12 years everyone had been telling him that he's right about everything and that he's the smartest most wonderful person in the universe. That's surely going to change a person's mindset. When he meets his childhood friend again, he's not going to assume that for the first time in 12 years he's wrong about something. Anyone in Sozin's situation would assume that Roku is the one not seeing how right he is. Seriously, imagine having a 12 year streak of being right about everything.

At first everyone always thinks Sozin got jealous of Roku, it is the most predictable, so it's a nice touch to have Sozin be incredibly supporting until his ambition caused their rift. We see the start of the fire nations fall to conquest. Now clearly not every fire lord is bad or evil and getting that take is pretty much a miracel since we have only seen 3 fire lords in the show when we clearly see that the history goes much further. Sozin started out with probably pretty genuenly good intentions since if he just wanted to blow shit upp he would have said so to Roku another take that is confunding to say the least. Sozin had his moment to choose and took the chance to get rid of Roku to in his mind better the world and wiped out the air nomands not really because he hated them well maybe if some random information in a role playing game kndicates something. He wiped them out because he didn't want to deal with the avatar. Acording to comics he was aslo homophobic for no real reason beyond the story saying that the guy who let his friend die in a volcano and started a 100 year war wit genocide also didn't like le gays just incase you really needed to realize that he probably wasen't that good or hell maybe this made him even more of a hero to people. Well anyway we see by his final narration that Sozin regretted his life choices probably the whole letting Roku die in the volcano but he was so old that he either realized that it would probably be too late to stop the war machine he started or he just didn't have the gritt to do so. Next generation Azulon not exactly a good dude either but again still had some form of humanity in him. Then the next generation is Ozai who is pretty much just a bad dude. Then we have Azula who well is not much better. Zuko probably already knew that Roku was his great grand father because if I was Zuko and found that out I would have freaked out instead he seems more angry that Iroh reminds him of that. Also intresting to note that Iroh doesent see himself as capabel of redeeming the fire nation because he was even more activley a part of the war than Zuko. Now Zuko again has more baggage to be tortured about. Also Aang canonically probably with a 99.9% certanty shat himself there because otherwise that joke makes even less sense. Plus after Azula showing some minimal humanity she is right back to being a complete bitch because there was no reason to diss Zukos scar there. Well she already took sadistic pleasure in him getting it so its not like this is that surprising.

What I don't understand is how Zuko didn't know that Roku was his great-grandfather. He's royalty...and since royalty is always based on your lineage, he would be well aware of his ancestry. I know that much of Fire Nation history would be rewritten for propaganda purposes, especially since the fallout between Sozin and Roku would probably be common knowledge, but I can't believe this detail would have been hidden. It would be a point of pride for the future Fire Lord to also be a descendant of the last Avatar. In fact, one of the comics makes a point of showing that Ozai (Zuko's father) chose to marry Ursa (Zuko's mother) specifically because she was related to Roku. He wouldn't have done that unless he intended to let his people and the world know that his children had that high-profile heritage. Zuko would have grown up knowing all about it, as would Azula. Why is he just now learning this?

By the way, you probably don't know that, but Roku's wife's face is basically a copy and paste of Aang's face, starting the tradition (or maybe inside joke, I don't know exactly) for the Avatar having the same appearance of their predecessor's love interest (MINOR SPOILER: this becomes even more noticeable when you compare Korra with Katara)

I doubt the show was implying this, but Roku letting not one, but multiple Volcanoes erupt, could severely damage the planet, or at best, send many human civilizations into ruin.

For my money, the fact that Zuko’s a descendent of Roku is interesting… but ultimately kinda meaningless? What makes Zuko compelling is that he’s a fundamentally good hearted person, warped by the toxic elements of his environment and upbringing. It’s not overly complicated as characterizations go, but there’s elegance in simplicity. Zuko’s arc is a fan favorite for a reason, watching him struggle between his innate goodness and his learned wrath is compelling, and learning that this dichotomy dates back to “The Avatar and the Firelord” does nothing to improve, or even really change my perception of it.

Mamy empires claimed to be bringing modernity, civilization and the future to their territories, and pretended a type of paternalism - that the people they ruled weren't ready to govern themselves. At the same time, they were violently extractive, disdained those they ruled and forced harmful, sometimes genocidal policies upon their colonies that have left scars throughout history. Fire Nation Imperialism. Starts out with sharing the benefits if their culture, quickly turns into wiping out the air nomads, extracting coal from the Earth Kingdom and officers denigrating other bending cultures as 'primitive savagery'.

Bit of a spoiler. But Zuko's mother an experienced herbalist poisoned Firelord Sozins tea in an effort to save Zuko's life and by doing so Ozai became the new firelord.

It's probably more that both had the potential, but Azula was favored and taught by their father whereas Zuko was taught by their mother, basically recreating the past of growing up in seemingly the same situation, but with very different outcomes.

You can just look at real life colonialism. Its a mix of greed and trying to justify the greed. UK, Spain, France, wanted to conquer territory because it would give them unbelievable amounts of wealth and power. Then they justify it with stuff like "we are bringing Christianity to those savages" and "We will civilize the savages and give them better lives". And then it also turns very nasty with stuff like "those foolish savages! If they just listen to us, their lives will improve!!" and "it is simply their nature. Their inferior minds and genes will forever prevent them from becoming civilized!!"
