In the previous live-action adaptation of Avatar, director M. Night Shyamalan turned Ang’s head arrow into a more neutral colour, prompting fans to respond with outrage over one of that film’s many liberties with the source material. Wanting to avoid a similar response, showrunner Michael Goi restored the original colour of the iconic head arrow for the Netflix series, promising fans that the abundance of close-up shots of Ang’s tattoo would feel like a veritable “blue harvest”, which also happens to be the original working title of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope.

In comparison, the animation starts quietly showing off the beauty of the south, and then Katara and Sokka arguing. All they had to do was linger more on the beauty and show how our world isn’t that far off from the bending one, using more practical effects for the bending. What could have been

That being said the movie is way more inspired by 3 and Wonderlands which were just goofy and dead meme filled even when they originally released. Kevin Hart is unbelievably miscast, his character, Roland is the straightman of the og 4 Vault Hunters honestly Djimon Hounsou, Chad Coleman, Idris Elba, hell even Chiwetel Ejiofor wouldve killed it as Roland. As adaptations go, they did a fine job. People are expecting everyone to have a rubber cartoon faces, when that isn't possible in a live-action movie. The acting was also fine, for a live-action series. I think that once you remove the slapstick humor, and amazing animation, people are only left with the philosophy and spirituality (the core of the show), which for most Westerners is liking drinking bleach. Also, these are child actors, and not adult voice actors, or kids who get to stand in booth with their street clothes on.

I want to address the reflexive negativity I see about the show here. The internet is a lot of things, but good at amplifying nuance it is not. 1) It's true that this Netflix show seems unnecessary on its face, as the original is still widely available to watch, but there's something here the new show offers that the original doesn't: the vision of a primarily Asian and Asian-American viewpoint *in positions of control in the production*. We can talk about how the vibe of the original felt, at least to Western audiences who didn't know much, very Asian because the original creators did do plenty of research. However, I feel that it is a net good that this show actually gives creative control to the cast and crew being Asian. So, is this show a bit of a cash crab by Netflix? Absolutely, but I think we can't deny there's good in having more Asian representation in the medium and in the industry. If this can give way to the production of more original movies/shows, and fewer creatively lazy reboots, then that is a good thing in my book. I also acknowledge that's a really big "IF". 2) The show makes changes. Those of us that are fans of the original HAVE to accept that. The question because does the new iteration make sense and hold together, especially for a viewer who is unfamiliar with the source material. Does it honor the theme, the intended point behind the original show, in this new context? In my opinion, it mostly does. Mostly. The tone is probably the biggest change overall, because the original was a cartoon intended for children, whereas this is more like a general show aimed at nostalgic millennials and newer audiences all around that haven't seen the original. As such, it makes sense that they would go into a bit of a more serious direction. However, they didn't fully remove the humor from the original either. The dialogue is different, the characterizations are a bit different, but IMHO all that makes sense. I do feel a little bit of the "magic" of the original has been lost. For example: to me, as an uninformed, white, American musician by trade, I feel like the *music here is very western and "epic" sounding*. The original seemed to use much more Asian and East-asian instrumentation as a whole, and the score felt very different compared to the other kinds of programming we had on Nickelodeon at the time. The music on this Netflix show feels a bit like Star Wars. I decided to look up the composer, and was interested to see that among his other projects, he DID work on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. IMDB didn't specify what he did there, but my guess he was either a preparer, an orchestrator, or something of that sort, working under Kevin Kiner. As a Star Wars fan AND an Avatar Fan, it was kind of cool to see that unexpected connection between this Netflix adaptation, the original, and the Clone Wars, of all things. (Fun Fact: Dave Filoni, the current CCO of Lucasfilm and co-creator/writer of The Clone Wars, also worked in the animation department or something like that on the original Avatar show, but I digress...) So, back to the music feeling epic and more Western. Well, if the goal here is to attract a wide audience, then that is a change that seems to make sense. I would have personally liked to see more integration of both traditional European style/American action film writing with the Asian traditional music-inspired instruments of the original, to bring the best of both worlds. (Of course, let us not forget that at this point in time, European Classical Music is a massive part of the cultural identity of places like China because of the complex history it plays in the last century+ of sociopolitical developments there. I digress again... stay on target...) 3) Does the newer, more serious tone suit the story? Well, if we take the original metaphor of the fire nation standing in as a fascistic dictatorship working to conquer the "world" because they're "strong" and the rest is "weak"... then this show actually makes that metaphor a lot more visceral, charged, and in your face. One could argue the merits of that, but to my mind, this is a strength. It's not that those themes were missing in the original show, but they had to be a little more subtle to not scare off an audience of mostly children with the horrific scenes of genocide. Today, the world is worryingly welcoming to fascistic thinking, and I feel like a show SHOULD be in your face about how dangerous that philosophy could be. So this is why Aang has be confronted a little more head on with the whole "You abandoned us when we needed you" kind of thinking from people like Bumi. In fact, if we take the whole Nazis/Fascists and World War 2 theme to be the central animating idea, then this show makes you feel much closer to being in the shoes of the European citizenry who suffered under the Nazis. I don't think any of this is a bad idea. 4) The revised characterizations mostly make sense. I'd say probably the most distinct GOOD changes are showing that Azula is pressured a lot by her father to measure up, which shows how and why she's a narcissist and psychopath than the original did. In the original, the explanation basically amounted to "uuuuhhhh, she's always been the favorite of the dad, and more criticized by mom, so she's just like this". Here we see that the father manipulated both children in different ways. I hope we'll get more development of what the mom was like. I would like if this show makes her less culpable in Azula's descent into madness. 5) One characterization I don't like is Katara's. She's a bit too dour and sad. They needed to maybe add a little more levity for her and Sokka, maybe without some of the goofiness. On the other hand, it's nice that her internal struggle is also tied to her struggle to learn how to bend. If they go the direction the original did as far as romance between her and Aang, it's probably better that she is not his teacher, but rather they both kind of help each other get over their "humps" in bending/Avatar-ing. There's more I want to say but I have a job and need to get back to that. I just wanted to personally air my frustration with the discourse over the show on the internet. I guess it's my fault for expecting any amount of nuanced takes to be amplified and discussed as thoroughly as "lol show bad".

@mrsundaymovies Mason could not be anymore out of touch than with this analysis of Avatar the last airbender. I get that it’s more so my era than a couple white 40somethings but the sheer amount of things they got right for this adaptation compared to the source material is notable. And Master Paku from the Northern water tribe just as the Netflix adaptation was vehemently against training female water benders. It had nothing to do with sokka’s motivations which also align with a male-forward arch of accepting women can be warriors. Which mason would’ve known if he’d watched any ATLA.

Shyamalan's adaptation has remained my least favorite film of all time since I saw it and it's absolutely better than the show: the costumes don't look like they were bought in some cosplay dollar store, it has physical sets and locations that are pretty good, it's actually shot by a cinematographer so every shot doesn't look like the worst implementation of green screen in history (it making the volume look that bad is also a mark against it), and its main crimes are being truncated and incompetent, while the show operates under the delusion it can improve on the best show of all time and its attempts to do so are insulting and embarrassing, including all the changes that are good on paper - who cares if they're executed so horribly. This travesty is too bad to justify even the few seconds of inconvenience it adds to looking for the original show, which in a few weeks will resume being the only version of this story anyone cares about.

All in all I’m becoming less of a fan of Mason’s critiques on film adaptations. Primarily because it seems lazy to not look deeper into the source material

This is leagues better than the animation, I’m a diehard ATLA fanboy and this fulfilled everything I was hoping for. Out of the 3 seasons and 4 of korra season 1 is is the worst and mostly boring, Netflix made season 1 watchable. Anyone complaining just needs to get laid

It's 1/10 at best.... I wish i could give it a minus rating, that's how bad it is... it's so painful to witness, I just wish I could unsee the live action... there's no wow-factor... no emotion... no chemistry... nothing that can make it memorable like the og show... it's astoundingly depressing, becuase i can't unsee this abomination... Gyatso, the greatest airbender in the world, didn't even put up a fight that lasted more than ten seconds... In the original show, Gyatso was surrounded by the bodies of at least a platoon of firebenders... Bumi is portrayed as a salty, dumb old man who blames his 12-year-old friend (a literal child) for running away instead of a nutty yet very wise and understanding old friend who gives guidance to Aang to be a better Avatar... Katara is supposed to be the most mature of the group, very headstrong, brave, and sturdy like a rock. Yet she's also caring and maternalistic, like a mother. She's a very remarkable female character who has faith in everyone and never refuses to turn her back on people who need her. I say everybody should have a sister or even a mother like Katara. That is how brilliant Katara's character is. Not a submissive little sister who needs to be looked after by her big brother, like how they portrayed her in the Netflix Live Action. Airbending seemed okay, but a lot more improvement is needed to show the full potential of airbending (not good enough). Earthbending doesn't have any solid martial art choreography and stance that makes it look like Earthbending. It just looks like people using telekinesis to chuck rocks at each other, like Magneto in X-men. Appa should have more character, as he's a very important member of the team that carries the whole gang on his back throughout the entire show. By the way, I didn't know Momo died because I didn't care to watch more episodes of Netflix's Live Action bullcrap... I am actually fuming at the showrunners right now 😠👿.

@JA that's quite a lot for a show that has no character development, no substance, horrible theater acting, and they pissed in the face of the original creators and fans... Absolutely horrendous

They even made Gyatso a stereotypical mentor even though they’d do stuff like bake pies just to throw them at the other monks. It’s so weird to think suits thought making the show bland was a good choice lmao no creativity whatsoever

Unfortunately, far too many still believe animation is a lesser medium and for kids. Even though most big budget films/series are built on what was originally seen as for children/younger audiences: Disney and Star Wars

The animation has actually storytelling and pacing lol it’s not just a cartoon it’s like Spiderverse, it’s just a really brilliant story. Since it was drawn it wasn’t confined to the live action limits, and the bending from season 3 lives rent free in my mind because of it
