Nothing against mike portnoy. In fact I love his work. He is a very talented drummer, and dream theatre rules, but HOLY SHIT. The drums in this demo are so much more powerful than the final result.

I'm glad Mike Portnoy re-recorded this. These E-Drums don't sound good. The Rev's drumming with an acoustic kit would have been an absolute best-case-scenario, but he left us. If A7X would have released the demo-drumming in the actual album, I would think it would not show off The Rev's immense talent. Mike did his best to stick to Jimmy's writing of the song. Even if this is different than the album version, it doesn't mean that it's different from Jimmy's written version! R.I.P., Jimmy!

Prefer it. Avenged Sevenfold have a recurring problem where the over produce the shit out of their music, that's why they kick arse so much live, and stuff like this is great, kinda stripped back, it shows that they're human!

The Rev was just so original he made all of his drumming look so effortlessly. He is my favorite drummer and in my eyes the best drummer and no not because this is my favorite band but because its true. He played the drums live for an hour and thirty minutes hitting every note on point not any human being could do that, hes a legend and will always be in our hearts and ears! Love you Rev!

Damn i love how the solo starts with just the Drums and 1 guitar not like the original where syn plays the solo from the beginning, it sounds way more intense (btw, way to go Mike Portnoy for making nightmare sound as good as jimmy did ^^)

Nightmare and Danger Line were the only ones written lyrically before he died. The Rev love those lyrics so much, M. Shadows didn't want to change them when he died. Obviously, Fiction was finished before he died.

These guys are just the coolest!!! Think about it, all the best bands are the ones that do something new, AC/DC, Pantera, etc. There is all this Metal Core, Screamo shite that all sounds the same but they are never gonna get as big as any of these bands. Avenged Sevenfold did something different and have there own sound and they are fucking awesome!!!!

i like this version better. because of the solo. It's starts like the album version solo and then the rhythm part come in and i'm like wtf something's coming and the it kicks into the tremolo picking part. Honestly i can't really say anything about drumming, i'm a guitartist but The Rev was definitly one of the greatest drummers. Rest In Piece Jimmy. We all miss You.

@sammyboi1453 well when i bought it it came with 3 bass drums and a pedal to each bass. on the right side pedal there is 2 pedals put together and on the left there is 1. maybe its not the exact kit all i know is that they are the same drums and cymbals and size all around. so if he didnt use all 3 then he didnt and i know other drummers that do do all 3 as well.

@atshapi13 2 different styles of music that they played. the rev probably knew how to do stuff portnoy doesnt know how to do cause they had very different drumming styles. Im just glad we have the demo to hear what the rev thought would be good to put in the song. i like this version with the guitar too. it sounds totally ominous. syn and jimmy were a total dream team!

I wonder how many people would of not have known better had they heard the release of Nightmare without hearing of the Rev's passing before hand. Just a random thought. 0_o

@gregsyn Every song was co-written by The Rev except So Far Away. Jimmy was part of the lyrical process. However, the band changed a few lyrics after his death to reflect the emotion and vibe better. So technically, so song perse was written for the Rev. So Far Away was written by Synyster Gates from his grandfather but dedicated it later on to The Rev. But no song was written specifically for him. ;)

for those saying this is better than the origional, this is the origional. this is when the band first came up with the song. the version on the album was just a modified version with a few changes. im not gonna say which is better because i like both. The drums are good either way even though I likeThe Rev better and wish he was on the whole album. Although I think the version on the albums guitars, bass, and vocals are better in my opinion the drums are great on both. R.I.P The Rev ur awesome.

@TimsGVids for the most part i agree with you, but you can definately tell a difference between the two. Given the two different parts compared, you can tell which one's Jimmy's and which one's Portnoys, and not just because one is professionally recorded. The Rev is heavier, and doesn't involve those dinky woodblock sounding drums Portnoy is so found of for whatever reason.

1 thing ppl need to remember is that every drummer has thier own style and puts thier own feel into every song that they play. When you listen to the Rev and then to Portnoy you can hear the lil sneaky (if you will ) fills that Portnoy adds into it. Not saying that they are better or worse it is just what musicians do.

@jmn1228 That was a while ago, things change. And as of now it appears they may have parted ways, although it is still a rumor. He said today that he wasn't allowed to talk about how he was feeling; probably because the band was waiting to make an official announcement. But a few people that went to his signing and met him after the concert said that he told them it was his last show with the guys. He didn't say if it was the last ever or the last of the year. That's why it's just a rumor atm.

Dunno who will be playing for them throughout the Nightmare after christmas tour and the other shows next year though. We'll just have to see.
