The REV seems like a real mate, he always made sure those around him, got a laugh, and i think he was some of the strongest glue in conneting the band, always making sure all was having a good time, besides he was a amazing drummer, and wrote some lyrics that might seemed weird, but was working R.I.P.

There's a bunch of clips in the end of this video of Jimmy playing on stage, and I'm in a bunch of those crowds. Some of them go as far back as 2006, when they played Download Festival in the UK and I went by myself as a 14 year old because I HAD to see them. I did see them, then I met them at a meet and greet, and it was the greatest weekend of my life at the time. I got into them in 2005, saw them in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, and when I read The Rev had died in the last few days of 2009, my heart absolutely broke. I have their logo tattooed on my arm, got it in 2008. Still miss him now, he was such a unique mind for music and so talented on the drums. R.I.P man.

In Fiction, the last song Rev wrote (3 days before his death) he sings "promise me you'll never feel afraid" and in So Far Away they respond "sleep tight, I'm not afraid"
@marbella13511 ай бұрын
They really did all know each other from childhood, the “past”’visuals were an accurate representation. Also I think you should know that the lyrics of this song are a response to the Rev’s last song called “Fiction” (which used to be his nickname). That song was created and sang by him as a demo and it was handed in by him as the last song of the Nightmare album 3 days before he passed away. The song is basically his good bye letter. It’s important to know that even though the Rev was living the rock star life he had a heart condition which caused him a lot of pain and would prevent him from going more than 30 years old. If you decide to listen Fiction you will hear his voice in his last days and you will hear what he tells his friends. They added Matt’s voice in some parts when they released it. It’s a hard one 💔

One of my only memories from school : We were assigned to write about a hero who we looked up to, and I wrote mine about The Rev back in 2009, I was 11 at the time. Still is, and will always be one of my favorite musicians. A lot of drummers look up to and honor him even to today. He's a legend.
@JacobC4797 ай бұрын
They were all good friends since junior high/high school and he died from an accidental overdose of prescription medication and alcohol, but also had an enlarged heart that may have had something to do with it too. I was shown Avenged Sevenfold by a friends older brother when he gave us a ride in 2007. I was _obsessed_ with them, learned to play all their music on the guitar. I still remember when Jimmy died, super sad and honestly still sad to think about. Can’t believe it’s been 14+ years since he died and that I’m almost the age he was when he died. Such a great song and amazing band. Rest in peace Jimmy, this song and especially the video still makes me wanna cry.

I tried singing it in karaoke but just had give up. I've seen them sing it live 3 times and looking forward to seeing them sing this in June although it will be even harder to hear this song this time as I lost my wife at the end of September to cancer ,

I never knew who The Rev was when he was alive but when I got into this band at 13 years old and heard this song I just felt some kind of connection with them, and it would make me literally start crying within seconds... I'd have to turn the volume down if it came on the radio! I actually made this my profile picture at that age and, even though it's pretty cringey (I mean you can barely even see the text, sheesh!) and I definitely wouldn't use a picture like this now, I still have it today just for the sake of preserving that time 11 years ago. Great video, my favorite part is always seeing people's reaction when they realize it's starting to play real-life clips at the end. If you want something else emotional, then definitely check out Fiction which I saw another comment mention, but if you want to see the light to this darkness - as described by the band themselves - St. James on the next album was made to celebrate his life and it's so fun and happy to listen to.

From ultra famous stuff (that i mostly already had aquired previously to the lesser known bands and deep cut songs that should have made it more widely known) I can give you pretty much endless suggestions on the grunge seen. And even just other stuff rock related. Regardless of rock sub genre. Funny thing is back when grunge become big around 1991 and i was in gradeschool, i hated music back then. I'm pretty sure 4 outta 5 of them grew up together since young teenager/preteen age. I kno matt(singer) and the rev met in catholic school so them I kno 4sure go way back.. I think Matt tells a story of how Jimmy was a year/grade above him and was the 1st kid he saw wearing band shirts and doing "hood rat" things lol.. just kids starting shit...then the other 3 came along shortly thereafter one after another. I'm almost positive Matt n rev met 1st put of the group..theres also a clip of rev playing the drums at a school talent show (which a small blink n miss bit was in this vid) and I'm pretty sure that talent show was at the catholic school they met at...I do kno that rev was a huge music nerd that rubbed off on anyone that listened, and m7ch like revs drummer idols neil peart n Mike portnoy (of rush and dream theatre, respectively) was a "leader" of the band in terms of writing and composition of most their music...revs idols come from those bands where the drummer isn't just "the drummer" rather that backbone and identity of the band! IL use a more well known example in lars ulrich of metallica...Lars is more or less the unofficial "leader" or was in the 1st half of metallicas career, and rev really looked up too those irreplaceable drummers!! There are "drummers" and there is the "franchise drummer"..one is highly expendable and the latter is not so much..u cannot replace a franchise drummer without fundamentally changing the foundation and sound of a the band...which is why ax7s sound changes so much from album to album after 2010. The only reason the nightmare album sounds as good as it does as the 1st album with the rev, was because Mike portnoy (the revs aforementioned HERO) had just left his band dream theatre and agreed to help finish that album and and do the tour cycle..portnoy didnt stay on permanently because he is the type of drummer that can cast a huge shadow over any band that isn't Dream theatre, and portnoy would be more of a distraction potentially turning them into AX7 W/Mike portnoy!! Which isn't something they wanted..they wanted a drummer that can grow and blend in with the band rather than the band being 2 seperate entities..the band and Mike portnoy lol..even tho it would have been the coolest shit ever from a fan perspective, especially fans of drummers in particular like myself lol.

I've been listening to them since I was a back in the early 2000s, they are my favorite band, you can tell some had a religious upbringing such as M Shadows being raised Roman Catholic based on their lyrics.
