Imagine that a copilot can use the radar to mark targets, check target status, designate radar contacts as friendly or hostiles, delete friendlies from radar. Pick targets for pilots. Overall increasing the pilots situational awareness of the battlefield and making the pilot more effective.

Really interesting. The radar was always a vague indicator for me and this video shows me how to get much more out of it in terms of situational awareness.

This is one thing Elite Dangerous got perfectly in my book. For some reason, CIG draws this confusing in-plane line from you to the target. I hugely prefer the 360 radar as it gives me a perfect mental image of where the enemies are. Couple of thousands of hours in ED and the original Elite probably shaped that
@captain-hooked2 жыл бұрын
One thing that gives the cross sectional radar a huge advantage is that it picks up radar signatures from over 5k away and puts them on your display. At places like Jumptown where you are watching for incoming baddies knowing exactly where they are when they are detected is huge.

I like the cross section radar, as I'm used to it from ye olden days of space games. Wing Commander, Privateer... hell, even the Star Wars games had something similar (front and rear radar, basically).
@The_Opinion_of_Matt2 жыл бұрын
Well, I found out I was completely misreading the front cross sectional radar. I thought it was a top down 2D 360 degree view, like a traditional aircraft radar system screen.
@eziop55392 жыл бұрын
If I'm correct, I think a good way to understand it is to imagine you're looking through a fish-eye lens. OR, you have set your FOV on an FPS game very very high, so you can almost see around your sides. So as you look at stuff, and it goes past you to the side, the blip will exit the central circle and enter one of the quadrants, until it's above/to the side/behind you, and in the outer circle. So if the bogey flies directly at you, he's in the middle of the central circle, and say he pulls up a bit and zips past you above your head, the blip will move directly upwards from the central circle, to the upper quadrant, and then to the top of the outer circle.

@wilemelliott2 жыл бұрын
anyone who has ever played Wing Commander and its sequels and spin offs should recognize the "front cross-sectional" radar too bad they don't give you the option to switch back and forth
@thomasdahlgren19852 жыл бұрын
I'm more comfortable with the second style too. It was what we had back in the original Wing Commander. But the other version has its uses too. In light fighters it is really all you need. Larger and/ or crewed ships should offer both.

I generally refer to them as Flat vs. 3D but I get where you are coming from. I generally prefer the 3D radar as it not only gives you direction but also distance so you can visualize the engagement a little better and determine immediate threat vs. non threat at a glance. I do agree it can get a little confusing at first when you have a lot of contacts but once you get familiar with the way it works it can make sure you are prioritizing threats far better than you ever could with a Flat radar. Just my two cents.

I might prefer the 3D radar but for the horrible design CIG uses where half the radar is floating above the instrument panel so if there's ANYTHING bright in that location you can't see half your radar. I am constantly stupefied about how stupidly they designed that radar on so many ships! And they keep doing it!

Whats also confusing is calling it a crosssection radar, since all active (vs ARH) radars rely on a cross section to determine if an object is there. The cross section being the (roughly) amount of energy returned from an object compared to a 1m square piece of steel. Also, if the targets are still given an angle on the outside of the cone, then its still been tracked by the radar and therefore also scanning spherically. It shouldnt be doing that. Maybe CIG can drop the update rate of target on the outside and say it has a second system for 360 awareness but not the room to store a full system. Ill have to check today, but if this is official CIG terminology, I am very disappointed and will have far less faith for a anything close to realistic for the electronic warfare future.
