There seems to be a real apologetic attitude with Whedon, as if the man can do no wrong. And the constant proclamations that the kind of film this should be can't be done - that it's impossible - is not a sufficient argument. I, for one, can see very easily how it can be possible. And Captain America actually did prove that. This film could have wrapped the main plot around the relationship between Stark and Ultron, then by extension Banner and Rodgers. The film never actually explores any kind of relationship between Stark and Ultron - the villain literally doesn't have interaction with the heroes until he's already out and about, which is made all the more unusual that the film and characters continue to behave as if Stark really contributed to Ultron - despite never actually even beginning the work on him. There is no set up. I felt throughout the film that there were major chunks missing, and it didn't surprise me at all to see an extended edition advertised before the film was even released. Dialogue such as that involving the omelettes and ultron beating stark at making them already suggested that the set up material had been excised, and as a result, this film just happens and then is just resolved. it's a non-event, really. The characters are barely developed (development is briefly hinted at with ultron), the film is overstuffed with non-consequential material that looks to have been retained at the expense of character-related stuff that is being held back for the extended edition, and the lack of any legitimate threat to the heroes undermined the entire film. This isn't The Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is The Avengers: A Couple of Days of Ultron. Ultron and his rushed and barely explored "plan" stands as more of an temporary inconvenience as opposed to a legitimate threat, and so what is meant to be an event film and meant to clear the field - reflect and acknowledge all of phase 2, and change the game for phase 3 - ends up a filler-feeling film that either ignores and goes out of its way to undo parts of phase 2, does little to set up phase 3, and as one reviewer put it, comes off with a complete feeling of being an obligation for a film to exist here whilst everyone (studio, directors, writers, actors, etc) want to move on to Civil War and Avengers 3. Thin characters. Thin plot. A very average, run-of-the-mill comic-book superhero film. Since when do Marvel films get a pass with criticisms that any other film would be fairly subjected to? If you make an exception to criticising comic-based films, and act as if what it does wrong is fine within the genre, then you are simply demeaning the genre and forever preventing it from being a respected, quality brand.

The problem with Age of Ultron was Ultron. Too campy, not portrayed as menacing enough, and not portrayed as powerful enough. They needed to up the Wow factor with the main villain. I never got the sense that Ultron or his weak clones were anything more than a pesky annoyance. And although we all know the world would be saved in the end, the outcome was really never in doubt. If you're going to have THAT many forces battling the villain, it makes sense to create one who's adequately formidable. Not the case with Ultron.

DrBoss873 Agree absolutely. Battling over a plot of land the size of a shopping mall didn't really drive home the reality that humanity hung in the balance. And you're right. Ultron literally came into existence and then became evil within 60-90 seconds? The time spent on Hawkeye and other stuff was MORE important than developing Ultron's motivations??
@artistryartistry72399 жыл бұрын
Vinh Tran Quang How many times something has been seen isn't relevant. What's relevant is how you can take something old and make it new. At any rate, failing to make the character menacing enough isn't much of a solution to this movie's issues. "Personality and uniqueness" and being sufficiently ominous aren't mutually exclusive.

1. Does the new avengers movie live up to the hype? I hate the movie, I know I'm in the very minority, but hey, people who love it I feel happy for them. 2. Best performance in A:AoU? Thor, he's my favorite character of the group. His standalone movie is also one of my all time favorite superhero movies. 3. Best MU director? Kenneth Branagh, not only because he directed Thor also because he directed Cinderalla, one of my favorite movies of the current year, more recently. 4. Something about Suicide Squad... I still haven't checked out the trailer for that yet, and I have a feeling I'm really missing out. I should do it soon though. 5. Franchise that deserves its own day? Aren't anniversaries technically special days for every franchise? Just saying. 6. What movie should have all female-cast? I'm not sexist or anything, in fact I respect women. But due to my lack of knowledge of that gender I can't say. Anyway I'd love to be on here, but I know it's never gonna happen, not only because I'm basically a nobody on KZbin also because I'm not even an American, so I can't go over there without buying a flight tickets, and we all know how expensive they are.

Nikkielu15 I agree. My 3 issues with the movie are .. The opening battle looked too much like CGI and failed to draw me in. The first act had way too many jokes. Not for a moment did I get the feeling that Ultron was a real threat. Probably because of shortening the movie.
@Nikkielu159 жыл бұрын
Well, shortening the movie or not, Ultron himself was too much of a character for me. What I mean by that is that he had too much personality. He emphasized too much with the twins and told more jokes than anyone else. Even Vision has less emotion than him, and he's actually comprised of some manner of flesh! Ultron did not overwhelm them and his suits (upgraded from Tony's suit and made by Strucker) were too easily torn apart by single members of the Avengers, including Black Window who is arguably the weakest. His terrifying powers and ability to control the internet and technology were not fully utilized; neither was the horror of such an ability fully realized within/impressed upon the situation. It was Ultron who disappointed me the most...

Of course it's over hyped, it's a damn Marvel movie for goodness sake. EDIT: A question for Marvel buffs. What I didn't understand about The Vision is that he has an Infinity Stone in his head. These things are supposed to wield power beyond comprehension, or so we've been led to believe in the Cinematic Universe so far. So, if he wields all this power, why does he struggle to defeat Ultron and his army of robots? Surely he can just wipe them out without breaking a (hypothetical) sweat?

I see what the problem is with the Marvel movies. I know some people had mention this before and I will repeat it, this is what happens when you announce what the rest of the Marvel movie slate is going to be and look like. When you go into a movie like AOU, the first thing that comes to mind is that is this movie going to be great, is it going to have a great story. If you go into this movie hoping to see more of the tie-ins for future films, you are going to be disappointed if they don't reference it a lot and start to wonder how are they going to do this, or how they are going to do that. we are 11 movies in and still don't have a villain that is better than Loki?? this movie made the same mistakes that Iron Man 3 did with their trailers in terms of what we are getting from the villain. He wasn't as strong as I thought he would be and after the second time he was defeated, I thought since he was the AI, he would create and develop a better body to go up against the avengers and even this movie I was confuse as to what his powers were.
@Democlis9 жыл бұрын
blackrock316 About the vilains, in a way it's kind of hard for Marvel to actually cast one, even in comics Marvel is very poor when it comes to villains. Memorable ones are rare at best and some of them (like Magneto) they are unable to use due to Sony. This villain problem to me is the greatest hope i have for these new DC movies that are about to come out, when it comes to villains DC as a much better repertoire by far. +some guy in a million wasting time on KZbin he is speaking about the new "DC CU" that started with the last couple of batman movies and Man of Steel, so ye, we DON'T have too many DC movies. Or do you also want to account for all those awful marvel movies that were around BEFORE they decided to make this new series of films (the last 11)?
@blackrock3169 жыл бұрын
Democlis I was talking to someone about this issue and he told me that he doesn't trust Marvel's trailers when it comes to villains because the thought didn't occur to me after the 8th or 9th movie that they don't teat their villains the way they are suppose to be treated. I have always thought because of the tone..it tones down everything including the villains. Maybe you know more than me, I do think Marvel is doing this on purpose.
@swanpride9 жыл бұрын
blackrock316 There aren't many villains at all which are better than Loki, not even outside of the MCU. But they created some really good ones in the last movies. Alexander Pierce for example. Ultron. And despite what other people claim, I think Ronan was the perfect villain for GotG. And you get even more when you look at the TV shows. Between Dottie Underwood, Grand Ward, Whitehall, Mr. Hyde and the Kingpin, the claim that Marvel doesn't have good villains is the kind of snap judgement which blinds people for what is really there.
@blackrock3169 жыл бұрын
swanpride I think you can take a weak villain from the comics and make him great on screen with the right motivation and right story, I don't think Marvel is trying..
@swanpride9 жыл бұрын
blackrock316 I didn't say that the Villain in the comic books are bad. I said that Loki is such a good villain that he is easily one of the "Best of all time" villains. Do you honestly expect MArvel to match that bar with every movie? They only need a good villain for each movie, they don't have to reach for the star every single time.
@otherdrummer54099 жыл бұрын
I agree with Kristian. Ultron was very fun, but given the trailers, I thought we would have a darker film. I seriously thought that the Avengers would have been torn apart (figuratively) by him and suffered some major losses. Also, Ultron as a villain was very physically weak. He got his ass kicked every time and attack plan was basically "robots, more robots, and a floating city". I really wanted him to push the Avengers to their limits and actually kill off (or seriously injure) a character to show what Ultron can do.
@garyv24989 жыл бұрын
Darius "Just Another Atheist" M I totally agree with you assessment on Ultron being weak. How many times did he get destroyed. Hell, he even destroyed himself in one scene. And they could have played that up like the agents in The Matrix, but no... someone cut his T1 cable to the internet and that was done.

@johnd50779 жыл бұрын
Age of Ultron was amazing. I loved it way more than the first Avengers, which I personally think is overrated. AOU's villain was brilliant. Ultron was much darker than Loki, and despite that still somehow funnier. The fact that Ultron was not intentionally evil, but actually was trying to help the world in his own misguided way added another layer to the character and story. I thought it had phenomenal acting, great pacing, and a terrific cast. The CGI was done masterfully and the characters worked so well together. As far as adherence to the comics is concerned, I loved the way the whole 'Stark making Ultron' storyline worked. I was not the least bit disappointed Hank Pym did not create Ultron like in the comics. Overall a great film that improves upon the strengths of the first and rectifies the weaknesses and mistakes of its predecessor while still feeling original and fresh.
@renecarbajal73319 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the devaluing of Avengers Age of Ultron. It had a few pacing problems but it crushed. Best action movie and the best comedy of the year. I would totally watch a 3:30 hour Avengers movie. The Hulk was the best performance, no doubt. I like Mike Carlson, but he seemed off today. I think that him being a fan hurt him today. Harloff is still the man.

marvel has a comedic style and its awesome. Ultron is created by Stark with Jarvis, who Tony talks to everyday, therefore Ultron has a sense of humor. it makes sense in the MCU.

Rene Carbajal it's not "awesome" it's tired and repetitive. They have no idea when to get serious. The thing with ultron makes sense but it still ruins the character and why isn't ultron like that in any other form of marvel movie/tv show/comic? The ultron in that animated movie where all the avengers kids had to fight him was better than the AOU ultron. Im telling you right now they're gonna ruin civil war because cw is supposed to be dark but they're just gonna throw in some unnecessary jokes to ruin the whole thing

The movie didn't leave up to the hype because of the misleading trailers. They really made it seem that Age of Ultron is going to be much darker than the first Avengers movie, the villian much scarier, and the stakes much higher. I wouldn't be as dissapointed if they marketed it as standalone fun "team comes together" movie, but that's not what they did. Also I expected it to round up and deal with what happened in phase 2 solo films, like the first Avengers movie did to a degree, instead it felt like Joss ignored all of the solo films entirely, and much of the film didn't make sense because of it to me. The movie was certainly enjoyable. All the fun moments and and action scenes. (The Vision was great! I loved him!). But just a lot of it not what I expected or wanted to see going in? SPOILERS: Tony destroys all of his suits in IM3, now he has Iron Legion, and builds a sentient robot twice! (He sure doesn't learn does he). Knowing Tony this one is not as unexpected though, and a minor nitpick, but at least a mention? I may be in a minority, but I actually liked IM3. But now Mandarin twist is nullified with the oneshot and the decisions and character developments are nullified here in AOU. Bucky? Who the hell is Bucky? Natasha blows all of her covers and leaks SHIELD files with her history to the world, but it doesn't even deserve a mention and she's somehow in love with the Hulk (Lets make Bruce fall on her boobs! How fun! Not!), and everyone sees it, despite it being not hinted in any way before, despite her being visibly scared of him in the first Avengers movie, despite the fact that the actors had zero chemistry. (Also that vomit inducing moment where she equates not being able to have children to being a monster. Pretty much all of her interactions with Bruce were vomit inducing and OOC, but this one takes the cake). I somehow expected of Joss, as a creator of Buffy, to do much better at Black Widow's characterization, and was very dissapointerd. Oh and "I have red on my ledger and I want to wipe it out" Natasha Romanoff wants to run away from the fight with her lover now? Who is she? Was she replaced by a Skrull somehow? Is she really Loki in disguise? Ugh. And of course my №1 WTF moment: the helicarier. So, SHIELD was destroyed in cap 2, but forget about it already, nothing that happened in cap 2 matters, and see: SHIELD is all good now. And Steve's somehow not at all suspicious of this new SHIELD, despite personally dismantling it in cap 2. And I know that was a good moment for them to show up, but the line "This is SHILED?" "That's what SHIELD was supposed to be" felt really heavy handed (and OOC to Wanda, given her backstory in the film). Also this one makes even less sense if you watch Agents of SHILED where Coulson's team struggle at first to get a quinjet, are hunted by the goverment, and trying to root out hundreds of HYDRA cells around the world. (But nope! Nothing besides the first Avengers movie matters here! See? In Sokovia was the last HYDRA base. And Avengers went there ONLY to find the sceptre. Not because they are fighting HYDRA or anything like that or because Steve's searching for Bucky in there. And AoS? What is this even? They are not even in MCU! (Despite the fact that they clearly are in MCU)). To sum up: it's more of a direct sequel to The Avengers, and IMHO would have worked better as the first phase 2 movie. But now it almost feels like all of previous phase 2 movies were pointless and this one nullified the plot of most of them. (What was the point of all this? The point, what was it?) And this is very dissapointing.
@justgotleid9 жыл бұрын
***** "Age of Ultron is going to be much darker than the first Avengers movie, the villian much scarier, and the stakes much higher." This is EXACTLY how I felt! So disappointing how none of the major points in the solo movies, like Tony's state of mind and the dissolution of SHIELD, were addressed. I thought the new Helicarrier was just left over, is Whedon seriously saying that SHIELD was reformed off-screen and without any explanation? Lame. Age of Ultron felt like a comic book crossover in the worst sense. Everyone gets together and has a bunch of fun, and nothing in each individual's comic line (in this case, films) is addressed. But seriously, I'm still so disappointed in how Age of Ultron was basically them cracking jokes the whole movie and having the occasional down moment. I was expecting raised stakes at the least. And don't even get me started about Ultron, as a character he was entertaining, but as a villain he was not at all intimidating.

Daniel Smith Top 5 for the MCU 5. the Avengers-Just meh to me overall and had too many too plot holes and some really ridiculous crap you would never see in comics like Hulk smashing Loki like a ragdoll 4. Guardians of the Galaxy-meh once again, its a bit better than Avengers imo, but seriously nerfing down Ronan really annoyed me because I like him quite a bit in the comics and overall he is just such a boring antagonist in the film with no substance 3. Iron Man 1-imo it has a great plot, good character development and I absolutely love Odibiah Stane as the villain as he is my favorite overall MCU villain 2. Avengers Age of Ultron-good plot, great character development for Hawkeye because he has been critised and hated prior that, Ultron was a good villain overall, loved Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, Vision was magnificently portrayed, brilliant idea to throw in some action immediately at the start which the first Avengers lacked imo, overall very impressive. The only thing I didn't like though was the Black Widow/Hulk relationship, to me it's just stupid and lazy kind of like the current Superman/Wonder Woman relationship in the New 52 and in general she just lacked character development apart from showing some flash backs on her in Soviet Russia. 1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier-brilliant plot, fantastic character development particularly with Black Widow which at least the Russo Brothers bothered to do, love how the tone quickly changes after about the first 20 minutes in and gets even more serious, overall just spectacular. The only thing I would complain about though is a lack of depth in understanding just how Hydra grew out of S.H.I.E L.D as it was only briefly explained and imo something very important like that needs more depth. Unless they show it in Agent Carter which I've never seen nor want to, then yeh that's pretty much it.
@leannsmith99539 жыл бұрын
Stephanie Brown Great list! I would probably switch 4 and 5 just because I feel Avengers set a milestone for film that paved the way for how the MCU can continue dishing out good cinema. GotG is a great tie-in piece IMO, but little more. I'm not aware of all the plot holes in Avengers, but that's just because I'm not as educated in MCU lore, I guess.

I have an insane amount of respect for this man, especially after Avengers Age of Ultron, so I might be biased... but I still think he deserves a place on the list.

***** Oh, trust me I know how much the producers are involved, when it comes to Marvel Studios especially #InFeigeWeTrust , but the amount of hard work and love that Joss puts into these characters is very noticeable on screen, at least to me.

James Spader was great as Ultron! I do believe Ultron could've been a more menacing villain (the commercials made it look like he'd break caps shield and kill everyone for crying out loud) and Black Widow was WAY TOO thirsty for Bruce Banner for some reason....but I still really enjoyed the movie. I will definitely watch the 3:30 version if it means theres more Ultron!!!

I would love to see Chris Stuckmann on this show.
@Death13Horseman9 жыл бұрын
To me Ultron was just a one liner spewing machine, he was funny but not hilarious, threatening but not menacing. He was stuck between two roles but didn't deliver the best it could at both. And it was a great misuse of James Spader's voice who can have a very threatening voice.

Amy Nicholson should have won the MCU Directors fight! Her arguments for Kenneth Branagh were FAR stronger than Kristian's for the Russos. She makes such good points so frequently that I think, after Dan, Amy is becoming the best fighter in Movie Fights.

I don't think her Bridesmaids answer was really in the spirit of the question though. Bridesmaids is already a female driven movie, so what would be different about an all female spinoff. That answer doesn't do justice to the question.

r6201sk For the life of me I couldn't understand why they just didn't hire actors who were actually from that region of the world and so could offer a natural accent. Why hire actors who are easily replaceable, don't have anything really to do or offer, and have to learn accents? It's kind of like grabbing an actor and dressing them up to look like another ethnicity - not because the actor is so good and that is a necessary thing to do just to have them in the role, but because they couldn't be bothered going out and sourcing the right actor for the character's ethnicity.

Worst part of Age of Ultron was the beginning with the bad CGI fight scenes. It turned around with Cap and the motorcycle toss.
@wilfredochavarria50159 жыл бұрын
Nope some people liked that part and i dont mind the use of cgi. What i didn't like was that i felt that the ending was anti climatic. But maybe the 3h version might do it better
@legopieface9 жыл бұрын
Wilfredo Chavarria No one is mad that it was a CG scene. People including myself are disappointed because the CGI was absolute shit. It was total trash. The Hydra castle was the only decent cg of that scene.

So many epic action sequences, cool character arcs but the plot was really confusing and hard for me to follow during the movie since: 1: Ultrons evil plans weren't announced until at least half way through, 2: the characters were given random tasks throughout the movie in order to combat ultron getting some sort of alloy/catch him, 3: the world was suddenly in peril based on the 3 second reveal of ultron intending to drop a chunk of earth from a massive height which could wipe out life....There was no build up that i could follow to feel really satisfied and move along with the characters. I still really loved the movie since it was really entertaining, had big surprises in it and kept me 'oooing and awwing' at the fight scenes. I'm still excited to see the next part of the avengers, though im sad i have to wait until 2018 to see it...

dean winchestette the action was stupid as fk, and characters were like them trying to make the super heroes into a bunch of beer drinking idiots. It was a kids movie at best. No real danger, very little logic, nobody learns anything.

Avengers Age of Ultron, To much stuff in the film over complicated and overhyped
@matheucampbell20539 жыл бұрын
Over complicated? The plot was simpler than tying a knot.
@joshuabond9469 жыл бұрын
The plot was fine. Over complicated in a way that the film spent too much time trying to tie in to the next phase of marvel. hinting at the next films. Take for example Thor being worried about the visions he receives. He focuses on the vision more and what it means despite the fact that Ultron is on the loose.

1. From the hype I know of. Sure it does. Quicksilver was fucking cool. And Ultron was a smarmy asshole. It was pretty good. 2. Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Quicksilver was the best part of the movie. 3. Is this a question? It's Joss Whedon. 4. Fucking no. 5. I think at this point MCU 6. None. Gimmick spin offs are dumb.

I didn't like Scarlet Witch, not because her character wasn't good or her actress was poor. I didn't like Scarlet Witch, because she was the biggest tool used to get thrown the most and best scenes her way. It was so blatant that they wanted us to fawn over her that it was off putting. Falcon, Vision, Quicksilver, Warmachine didn't get the love she did just cause they WANT us to care about Scarlet Witch. Quicksilver for the whole movie was following Scarlet Witch and what she said like a good puppet to put her on a pedestal.
