WoH is actually the first BL drama that's made it passed censorship, and managed to express the romantic relationship between the two male leads very openly, tenderly and successfully. I think it's a milestone in Chinese entertainment
@silverstream2333 жыл бұрын
Wait really? What about older BL dramas like Guardian? It came out way before both CQL and WOH
@kellyk52013 жыл бұрын
@@silverstream233 of course there are many more good bl dramas before this, but those which are more explicit are usually blocked by censorship later on. Guardian drama changed the storyline a bit into brotherly love, also as for cql. In my own opinion, historical dramas like woh are easier to convey the emotions coz they can just reference from different poetries, so woh really did a great job in expressing the romantic relationship indirectly (but easy to understand) between the two main characters.

@blackgold25213 жыл бұрын
@@winteryuki8010 Actually it is. This story follows the book. If you're looking for sex or kissing. The book doesn't have it. Sooo, the drama definitely isn't going to have it. Priest just doesn't do kissing or sex. S/he does HEAVY flirting ONLY in the beginning but the focus is on the plot & the development of the relationship through the plot. However, there's no kissing, sex, or handholding in Priest's stories. The Untamed, Addicted, and Advance Bravely has sex but they're not written by Priest. The amount of Advance Bravely they'd HINT on screen is the amount they'd EVER give. There is way too much dubious consensual sex, outright rape, men in women's thongs in that danmei...let's just say the level of bl trash they had was excessive any more & they would have been shut down. Not only would have they shut down they would have increased restrictions like they did last time w/ Addicted.

i actually saw someone said Chengling could have had crush on Gu Xiang from the beginning but because he had known Gu Xiang only saw him as a younger brother, and later was marrying CWN so he never revealed it. AT FIRST i found it ridiculous but in one of the scenes, WKX was making fun of Chengling saying "I only have Gu Xiang. If you are okay, I can marry her to you." AND Chengling didn't reject! (In contrast, he made it very obvious that he didn't want to marry Xiaolian for several times through out the drama.)

The script writer is definitely a huge fan of “Dream of the Red Chamber” (one of the Four Great Classic Novels). The last name of “Zhen”, the reference to “sticking pancakes”, and WKX likening A’Xu to a “beauty lamp” (the male lead in Red Chamber calls the female lead a “beauty lamp” cuz her health is delicate and a wind can easily extinguish her). There’s also a poem that’s partially taken from Red Chamber, but I forgot which one.

You missed one thing. Kexing and Gu Xiang appear simultaneously in one poem: 客行悲故乡. Here 客行 is Kexing, the same as the name in this drama. 故乡 pronounce as the same as Gu Xiang, though different characters. 悲 means sorrow, or feel grieved for something. Literally, this line means the travelling guest feels sorrow for his homeland. In this drama, you can interpret it as Kexing feels grieved for Gu Xiang. So if you know this poem, you would have expected a bad ending for Gu Xiang at the beginning.
Im sorry, but i seriously cried after you explained the meaning behind wen kexing, gu ciang, and nian xiang. The meaning behind these names makes it all the more devastating

Plus Gu Xiang and Chengling really had that sibling relationship. These characters really made a soft place in my heart as their home.

There is another interpretation of Zhou Xu's name that is worth sharing!!! In episode 2 when WenKeXing first knew ZhouXu's name is "willow", he commented "周而不比,身若飞絮“! 周而不比(Zhou Er Bu Bi) originated from the Analects of Confucius(论语), describing someone that is fair and just; not bias and without favoritism. While 身若飞絮(Shen Ruo Fei Xu) originates from a poem named Zheguiling - Inchoate Passions (折桂令 · 春情). The original lines of Zheguiling translated are: "身似浮云(My body feels as a drifting cloud,), 心如飞絮(my heart as willow catkins in the air,), 气若游丝(my breaths as gossamer.), 空一缕馀香在此(there is but only leftover incense,), 盼千金游子何之(to wonder the whereabouts of the aristocratic wanderer.)" . In short it describes a young woman missing and long to see her lover! Awwwwwwww its so sweet to see how WenKeXing put these two lines together to describe the first impression of ZhouXu's name on the very first day they met! I just can't get enough of WoH!!! First, Thank you very very much for this very informative and educational video you made. Ha Ha ha! The more I can't forget the Very Beautiful, entertaining, educational, heartwarming story, artistry, (I am happy for confirming that Word of Honor is more that what has been shown. I mean employing Poetry especially in the Lines of Wen Ke Xing is excellent and exciting. I understand more that the names of the Actors were derived from some meaningful place or something notable. And made me realize that the story was taken from A book or Novel? Quite interesting. I just want to thank you so much for clearing and make Us understand the meaning or the deeper meaning of the Great Characters in Word of Honor. I think it's a Masterpiece, a well made film, Very timely as in Modern times, the behavior of the Characters and the treatment is still happening today, the greed, Lies, killings,, hunger for power; treachery, deceit and for me Ah Xu and Wen Ke Xing rectification and believing in truth, change and justice are very interesting traits we may reckon with. And the special love and affection that until death They will both fulfill their WORD OF HONOR. Thank you very much!

When you said "Ke xing bei gu xiang", I immediately stopped the video. Didn't realize this video contained potential spoilers for the end of the drama, since there wasn't a spoiler warning in the video or the title. But I'm glad you explained why Ke and Xing make up the character Yan. Totally didn't get how 氵could mean 客.

I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned that the last character of Cheng Ling's name (岭 lǐng) is also used by Chinese fans online to refer to the show, because it is a play on the show's Chinese title 山河令 (shān hé lìng). The middle character is a homonym for "and" (和 hé). If you look at the components of 岭, it is literally 山 “和” 令 shān hé (meaning "and") lìng.

I love how there's so many references/easter eggs in something so simple as a character's name. Thanks for putting this together! :)
