But your rant was addressed in the next episode, basically this drama is about using genius to escape the realities of life. The next episode addresses the effect of possession of the body by the fl even from the first crossing. Cheese fl found out she was mediocre in math after the main fl left her body and rebelled and stopped studying... Main fl was basically cheating during the childrens olympiad by having college knowledge in math in a child's body and after she left, she took all thta knowledge away living the child feeeling bullied by all the expectations of adults. And then there's the ml who wanted to have the family he had lost in the parallel world. Yes, he loves the fl but he also loved his father. In the parallel world has both. Also, you don't really expect him to let the fl rot in jail... Since he is a genius, he already calculated her father's love for her would save her and even prepared the IOU. The next episode when the cheese ml father discovered the identity of the ml was I think the highlight of the drama so far. It really points out the dangers of escapism, that you really can't run away from your problems... Vontinue watching the drama, it's getting better and better...

When I first started reading Chinese webnovels and novels like 10-15 years ago or something, I will always wish that all my favorite novels will one day be made into dramas.. But fast forward to now, I sincerely hoped that every single one of my favorite novels will NEVER be made into dramas, ever. This is how bad some of the drama scriptwriters have screwed up good stories.

I love hearing your opinions even when I disagree with them! I absolutely love this drama - I think it's one of my faves of the year. I'm up to Episode 30, and I love all the parallel universe puzzle stuff and the high stakes - it reminds of how I felt watching Lost (before the bad ending lol). It's spooky and thrilling, and it makes the gears in my brain spin trying to figure out what's going on, coming up with new theories as I watch. I also think Zhang Xincheng is phenomenal in it, but I don't want to explain too much why because it would be a spoiler. The kids' arc was phenomenal and would be a good show on its own, but I also really enjoyed the episodes after that, too. By the way, the kid who plays young Ji Jiang/Hua Juan is also in Who Rules the World - he plays the kid whose entire family is killed - the family who has all the medicines. He's so great.

I decided to stop watching this drama after episode 11, I was wondering if I should continue but I was literally too lazy to continue. Thank god this review came in time, now I know I should just leave this drama while it still gives me a good impression, I really loved the part with the child actors! That part is such a joy to watch. I feel like Zhang Xincheng is always quite explosive when it comes to building chemistry with a co-star but for some reason, this CP just doesn't work for me... Honestly, it might be because of the age gap but I'm actually quite disappointed because I wanted to love the FL but I just can't. Some people also said that this drama goes quite light on the romance aspect of the story, but for some reason, I think I wished for even less romance here... or maybe I dislike the idea of this CP so much that I want them to stop having any kind of romance at all
@katiirabbi
@katiirabbi 2 жыл бұрын
Same, I've never seen ZXC's CP fail this badly. I cannot tell that the FL has been crushing on PeiZhi for years and now finally has the chance to date him. I think a major reason is that ZZF has a very childish vibe that makes romantic parts very cringy. There are plenty of girls her age or even younger who can manage very convincing romance. ZXC and ZZF just seem like siblings, and not very close ones at that.

This is the first time my opinion of a drama has sharply differed from yours. I think it is the subjective experiences of losing two people close to me to dementia and being married to someone who I would go through a thousand worlds to find made me identify so hard. There is no chemistry between the 2 leads and I don’t like the female lead at all. The plot get worse and worse. Now the male lead from cheese world is fighting with the one from strawberry world. Lots of people are continuing to love this drama, and that's fine, but the review/rant is spot on. I watched the kids arc so faithfully. So much heart in the arc! Then I fast-forwarded from 10-26 because I couldn't stand the adults. I know Zhang Zifeng has great emotional depth, but she just didn't do it for me here. Her lil girl version has so much more chemistry with Lei Jiayin. Zhang Xincheng's character was so unlikable. I realized that I only like small Cheese Pei Zhi and transferred that like to the adult and became disappointed. Main CP has no chemistry. They're adults, but mathematicians have no lust or something? I would watch a 40-episode drama about the math camp with the kids LOL. GO GRYFFINDOR!

I think the novel was more like a mary sue growth novel, though the fl experience growth, she basically escaped all her problems and grew in the parallel world. Since it is a parallel world, personalities of the same individual differ from the other "same" individual in the parallel world. The next episode addresses the effect of possession of the body by the fl even from the first crossing. Cheese fl found out she was mediocre in math after the main fl left her body and rebelled and stopped studying... 14:28 This literally happens to soooo many novel adaptations in cdramaland and It's just really...really questionable thing to me??? Taking female centric stories and making them a marketing tool for men...It's basically like the industry loves stealing women's job opportunities and all, we all know tv and movie industry has a history of not wanting women to be protagonists and just win in general and this is making it worse. There's an upcoming drama with the exact same thing going in there and when I read a person's comment about how this thing is becoming more trendy is what they really like and told her HOW she could even support the idea when it's very questionable and bad for women she snapped at me lol

I can understand not being happy with the drama if you're a fan of the book - it's very true that this drama is much more like a derivative work than a straight adaptation. The book is narrated mainly through Lin Chaoxi's eyes and focused on her coming into her own as a mathematician and the drama eschews that in favour of exploring other matters, particularly the relationship between Lin Chaoxi and her ill father, and Pei Zhi and his struggles. But the drama has its own charms in it's own right and it touches on some difficult, hard to talk about issues that are worth digging into imo. Maybe Lin Chaoxi from the Strawberry world isn't a 'heroine' in this drama - she's portrayed as just a normal, hardworking slip of a girl with a lot of heart who manages to find the courage to pursue her dreams and take care of her father at the same time. And maybe Pei Zhi from the Strawberry World isn't a close to perfect person with all the answers as he's painted in the book through Lin Chaoxi's eyes - he's portrayed in the drama as a math genius who's nevertheless just a very lost man who struggles with his mental health, his fractured relationship with his mother, and finding his own courage to pursue his own dreams. Both Lin Chaoxi and Pei Zhi from the Strawberry world are incredibly relatable, real characters who managed to find a place in my heart - I will be so sorry to see them go at the end of this series. tl;dr if you're just looking for a sweet pet romance, this is not the drama for you - in fact this drama might be hard to watch because it doesn't glorify and idealize prioritizing love over everything or falling in love. If you're up for a drama that can make you reflect on your own life/choices/family and you're interested in a parallel dimension story that keeps you guessing till the end though, I suggest you give this one a chance. Both the production quality and the acting are heads and shoulders over what you find in most modern cdramas these days. It's really one of those rare dramas where I have no complaints about any of the main cast - all of the leads and a lot of the supporting actors had demanding and complex jobs to pull off and they nailed it.

Just finished this drama and it was a roller coaster. The drama is a love story of a father's love for his daughter. It all comes full circle. It's also a story a story of facing your problems head on and not taking the easy way. And finally, a story that it's your past that shapes you today and that what makes who you are and what you are to others.

The first arc with the kids was phenomenal on an acting level and super fun to watch. All three kids have such great potential in their careers! After we stopped seeing the kids, it got kind of boring. XD I'm still watching this one, and I'm enjoying it a lot right now compared to most currently airing dramas. BUT as you said, there are a lot of things that make me raise my eyebrows. I haven't read this novel, but I've learned to try not to be picky on adaptations over the years. It's a fact that it's not going to live up to our expectations. My issue with this drama is how disjointed the characters, themes, and goals are. The first arc with the kids makes sense as she wanted to get back to her world but the difference between adult stuck in child body Lin Zhaoxi and present Lin Zhaoxi is night and day. You'd think Lin Zhaoxi would develop a fiery personality like how she was in the Cheese World, but she comes back to being insecure and sad, with only a slight new insight into life, making it slow and boring. Lin Zhaoxi continues to be like this in the second time travel. Then Pei Zhi... we know his love for his father and desperation/insanity/depression/guilt over his father's death. So it makes some sense why he becomes unlikable in the Cheese World, but it's just soooo out of character for Pei Zhi. Because they're the main leads, and there's this jarring inconsistency, it's hard to LOVE it. I'm only sticking to it because the acting and the emotions are there, making this one stick a little more than others. I really enjoyed The Rise of Phoenixes, but the last bit completely screwed everything over. I think Chen Kun took an interesting take on his character, which I liked. So, if the director throws a weird curveball to Heart of Genius, he will go on my red flag list. Thanks for another fun rant/warning video, AvenueX!

Actually the premise of morality, when there are no legal consequences and only one other person will ever know what you did and what would people do to get what they want despite the harm to someone they love is a good one. Would you be willing to screw over your girlfriend to keep your father alive? Would you be willing to let your boyfriends father die so you can take care of your sick father? Is it really stealing if you've time traveled therefore the idea hasn't occurred to the other person yet? It sounds like just with Rise of the Phoenix's the good guys and the bad guys are very complicated, but this guy doesn't know how to tell a full story once the dilemma has been introduced.

Can you make a video about the Chinese drama industry and how it works? It's so interesting to me as an American that the entire series is filmed long before it even airs. Then, they don't seem to give an airdate until the very last minute and when shown, they show daily (sometimes two episodes a day). Is there a reason for this way of doing things? Has it always been that way? It's so interesting since it's almost the opposite of Turkish Dizis that are filmed almost just a week before they air and can be canceled with little to no warning. Also, the amount of dubbing in some of the c-dramas is shocking. I get it when it's a scene near the ocean or someplace noisy, but some seem like it is dubbed over in every scene. Why is that?

The director is so disrespectful of the author, the novel and the fans. Why would anyone want to advertise himself as untrustworthy where reputation in the industry is important? Now, his work will be automatically discredited. Thank goodness I only watched the first 12 episodes. Was thinking of binge watching later but now I won't. It was confusing after the first stage but I had assumed that mystery element was worth the pay-off later. Apparently not.

I actually already started on rewatching them while waiting for the rest of the episodes. The child actors really brought a magnificent performance. Wang Sheng Di's performance never failed to impress me ever since The Bad Kids. Fu Bu Han surprised me though since his acting improved a lot here compared from Who Rules the World when he played Han Pu. Finally, Lin Zi Ye gosh! I never saw him from another drama before but he is so impressive. The first time he appeared, I already thought he is truly a leading man material. This drama will still be on my top list because of the first 9 episodes.

Ahhh. "Rise of the Phoenix". Due to the lackluster performance of Chen Kun's latest drama "Wind Blows from Longxi", I ran recounts of the unpleasant or terrible stuff that happened due to his involvement. The worst was the massive online and offline bullying the novel's author suffered at the hands of his fans. It can be generalized that a novel author will be blamed for drama production's mess ups and/or drama's tanking by fans of ML or FL even when the author had little or no say in the production.

This seems to be a fairly common trope across Asian dramas in general - where no one can do a good time travel or parallel universe jump story very well. I haven't seen this but I've seen its Korean equivalent "Train" which is likely to be equally baffling and confusing. The in-universe mechanics have to make sense but so do the character's motivations and characterizations. If not, there is no story. It becomes a series of tropes bound together by strings of nonsense.

Just finished watching the whole drama. Overall I enjoyed the drama, something different from the loads of 傻白甜 kind of forgettable dramas. While the story may be a little confusing, there are touching moments that tug at my Heartstrings. I think the best actors are LJY (the dad) and ZXC (Pei Zhi). Especially when he has to leave the Cheese World and back to the Strawberry World where his dad is dead and he suffered from mental illness. His struggle and heartbreak is so realistic. I think Pei Zhi being imperfect is more realistic than being perfect.

Started watching this drama cuz I really like ZXC, then discovered that the original material is written by the same author who wrote 犯罪心理, one of my favorite BL novels. So imagine my utter shock and disappointment past the first arc. Not only did the plot go haywire, there's NO chemistry between the leads. Ok if you're going to change a mostly platonic story to romance, at least give me GOOD romance. And I KNOW ZXC is capable of very good on-screen chemistry. His acting is not the best in this drama but ZZF's acting is WAY worse. People have this "childhood filter" on her since her early works as a child actress are highly regarded, but honestly she's yet to produce a single good work as an adult. She mumbles her words, has very limited emotional range (either expressionless or has a silly smile), and just CANNOT convey the perseverance, drive, and passion that the FL has. ZZF's adult FL cannot even hold a candle to the child version played by Wang shengdi.

I know that script writers need to adapt novels for screenplay, but I wonder why they have to turn a perfectly sensible story that’s loved by many people to something completely different, changing the characters’ personalities and sensibilities completely. Every time this happens it always gets hate from everyone and the drama fails. So I wonder why they still do it??

I love cdramas even when they always and I say always, let me down. Chinese actors are amazing. Yet they hardly ever get to go beyond “vanilla” they are always held back and having to work within a cage. The best actors know how to climb the cage and stick their arms out, YET never the less, no matter how good they are, the story line and censorship keeps them caged. That’s the most heart breaking thing about cdramas. The fact that you know that no matter how great the acting is, the story line will always be messed with and me just wanting to know what the initial true intentions for the film originally was.

It’s never getting better, sorry, it just isn’t. They may do really good propaganda movies, but new film rules that came out last week has put military movies above all other movies, no more wuxia, or Xian Xia dramas, no sissy boys. by next year, everything will change. It could be that they stop catering to foreigners altogether by not showing their films on foreign platforms

turns out PeiZhi does suffer from some mental disorder in the drama, so it is not that unbelievable the decisions he makes when he jumps to cheese world. I enjoyed seeing LinXi really push PeiZhi to do the right thing. I also appreciate the attention to detail, the math was pretty good, they even spoke german (i think).

I finished watching this drama. Here are my opinions 1. I didn't read the original novel so the change in story didn't bother me. Actually I have stopped reading IP before drama because of this sole reason. They always change the core of the story idk why. (except - YAMG, its 99% novel based). 2. The kid actors are genius. Really worth watching only for them. Actor playing Hua Juan was in Who rules the world. 3. Second time jump was really messy. Like AvenueX said, it doesn't make sense. really crap writing. 4. After ep10, I forgot that its a drama that's main focus should be mathematics. It became a romcom or family drama. 5. Character of adult PeiZi is intolerable. Even though I like the actor ZhangXingChen, and he did a good job here too, but the character Peizi was a headache. 6. I am satisfied with the explanation in the ending. At least they didn't left any major plot holes or unanswered questions regarding the time jump or why it happened. And as always, they had to mention its a fictional story. My suggestion - watch first 9-10 episodes. then fast forward most of the drama And carefully watch the last 2 episodes. it covers the whole drama. Last two episodes can be made into a movie itself.

If you would watch a couple more episodes, the ML's actions in the second stage aren't THAT bad, because reporting the FL was only a method to taking her dad out of the picture, and he was never going to do actual harm to them. However, the FL's actions were laughable - a mature adult coming from the present would realize leaking the code is such a stupid strategy if she had half a brain.

I have to disagree with you ,as someone who watch alot of American series I used to seeing the leads doing immoral, illegal and questionable things as long as the plot is logical and it makes sense why are they doing what they doing, human heart are twisted and it makes more sense to see that,but I feel Cdrmas tend to try to portrait the leads always as flawless characters, even the villains do awful thing in the end they somehow regret everything they did, but really need to stop adapting from novel if they are going to change everything

I just finished the 34 episodes and I have to say I love that I didn't follow your warning. If you want a story that is about romance, maybe you can check another drama. Like someone said, this is a love story between a father and his daughter. The rest, are people who are part of their lives but not the main reason for their existence. Altough at some point some characters' choices might seem questionable, watch it until the end, you won't be disapointed.

Have to say I disagree with this review. It’s a good enough drama with great acting all round. The plotting is good and I do enjoy the adult part as much as the “child” part in the earlier episodes. The story is interesting, the logic is sound within the logic of its universe. It’s quite unlike the cliche C-drama that are “considered good”. The point that arouse my interest in keep following the drama is when the formula p=np is flashed. This is still one of the unsolved math problems in our real world and it can be related to time and space too. Hence, it’s fitting to a time travel themed drama. The formula is also fitting as it’s about problem solving vs the time it takes to execute the solution, another theme of the drama. The characters are interesting enough that make me care about their story arc. The clue to why the time travel took place is given in episode one, which is why I keep watching until the end. I only follow this drama and Time Seems to have Forgotten closely among the recent releases. Haven’t read the original novel and don’t really care. My opinion is adapted drama should be judged on its own merit without reference to its source material. P/S: just finish watching the finale; one word: satisfying. Most C-drama endings are quite crappy but this is not one of those dramas. I don’t regret watching this drama to the end. The slight alteration of scene sequence at the end to make sure the drama can get through the censor and still retain a satisfactory finale is nicely done.

If it is "INSPIRED" by a certain novel people need to stop assuming it will be movie version. If it is "MADE AFTER" the novel, then theit offense is inexcusable. People need to understand between inspiration of idea from something and making after something. I am unsure about this novel but it seems to be more inspired.

Another junk review! Why does a drama need to follow the book? They pay royalties and they can do whatever they want. It is disingenuous of you to tell people to stop watching after episode 9. You miss math in this drama so much. Are you paying attention to what kind of crap they are writing? Just look at the cardioid Zhaoxi is plotting. How can a continuous function have so many discontinuous second derivatives? I seriously expected that you would label one giant red jiade on that scene. After all, you are being so righteous all the time. I am perfectly happy with the thrill I got from the first 32 episodes. I may not get the ending I wish but as long as the ending shakes me I will be very happy with this drama. I agree that kids were cute but adult actors did a great job also. And you cannot appreciate it if you are not watching the whole show. And The Rise of Phoenixes was a great drama also!
