Just to help add perspective to these hits. These boys average between (ill convert for you) 240lbs to 300lbs, they all can run good speed for distance but they train a lot on explosive power, so they sprint 18-25miles a hour instantly and then hit you. So imagine, your running full tilt at 20mph, been pass the ball and now you have a target on you and then 2-4 brick shit houses run at you at full speed and you have a 40mph collision with a wall, and that's being nice, if your unlucky you catch a elbow or knee to the head or pick up and thrown over there shoulder, grabbed mid air and pole driven into the ground.

There's far more concussions in the AFL, only because of the nature of the game, it's a 360 degree game with far far more forward passing as well as many more contests in the air, the forward pass is the key difference here, all this creates many more blindside hits and collisions that can cause concussions. On top of this AFL players are allowed to aggressively hit/block a non-ball carrier within 5metres of the ball unlike both Rugby codes, In Rugby League/Union you can only hit/tackle the ball carrier. As far as to which sport hits harder, that's pretty hard to tell these days, years ago I would of said League as there should be more force from heavier guys but they have taken the shoulder charge out of the game around 6 years ago or so, the g-forces will have dropped considerably. Many of these hits you see in the video are prior to that, If memory serves me correctly it was the hit at 5:12 that sparked the outlaw of the shoulder charge, I might be wrong though.

"He got back up" Yeah, a lot of Americans don't realise that when they compare NFL ... and Rugby Union or Rugby League. A tackle happens in NFL, the play stops .... clock stops ... a bit of a break ... a switch in teams maybe, etc. A tackle happens in Rugby League or Rugby Union, the game is still ongoing .... clock doesn't stop .... same players attacking and defending ... possible opportunities, if the opposition is disorganised. That whole "the tackles are harder in our game" ongoing argument is kind of pointless ..... when in Rugby League you're getting tackled about 20-40 times per game and STILL carrying on.

It's not really useful to make comparisons like that because the peak force makes a big difference to how much damage is caused. Instead of 4 crashes at 60 you could say one crash at 120Km/h per game and they'd all be dead.

He had the perfect built for a second-rower (defensive forward); not particular tall but slightly stocky & quite broad, with very good core and lower body strength. When he tackled he not only drove forward but upwards and many attackers looked like they'd just had an encounter with a Mack truck after Gator hit 'em!

Most NRL supporters will say NRL there is far more concussion because AFL is "GayFL". I think there's potentially more in NRL, however, with AFL being a 360-degree game there's a lot more knees and fists in the back of ur hair, where you aren't bracing for it. Whether NRL and Union you are able to line a player up and brace more so. I think its much of a muchness. NRL has tried to obviously limit concussion and things, through banning shoulder charging and such. I actually just looked it up, although its Wiki, so don't quote me. But NRL/Union (although both sports are quite different) "approximately 3.9 concussions per 1000 hours of play occur in professional rugby" - "1 concussion every 6 games" They state also that it is halved within Amature Rugby. AFL "5-6 players who suffer a concussion for every 1000 hours spent on the field," - They also add "there are 6-7 concussions per team during one season" Crazy to think, I never thought it'd be that high. This is the link if you're interested. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concussions_in_Australian_sport

You need to watch the state of origin games between New South Wales and Queensland. There are more injuries and concussions in AFL Footy than the NRL. in the NRL more players come off with the blood rule

5:20 alot of concussions your right. So much so they had to make a new rule that if your suspected of a concussion you need to leave the field for an exam. This has only been the last few years tho now there starting to realise the dangers. In the old days like this video players would get concussed and just play on they didn't care.

Most of the rugby players you see have been playing the game since they were kids in there local rugby league clubs so that’s one reason why a lot of players can take a big hit and get back up again

AFL has more concussions, just by the fact hits can come from any direction. In rugby codes the hits nearly always come from the front. Alot of the biggest hits in the video were "shoulder charges" which are no longer legal in rugby codes. An arm must be part of the tackle in modern rugby, there's still plenty of big hits.

In Australia, when you say Rugby, it means Rugby Union. Here, its just called League mostly.

back in the day the game was brutal, and 9/10 times would end up in an all in brawl. good times, stupid times but very entertaining to watch

They've since outlawed shoulder charges in the NRL. Many of those tackles would be illegal now.

Side note, this first clip needs a little more perspective. Sonny Bill Williams a.k.a SBW was on Debut for the Dogs. At the age of 18. Putting a hit on a veteran player Martin Lang. If you want to see the height of his destruction just search SBW big hit highlights

There is a US rugby league and a US national team (The Timberwolves?). There is a lot less downtime in Ruby League than American Football (which is actually a form of Rugby - there is a rabbit hole for you to run down), meaning that Rugby League is less of a commercially viable product for TV networks than the American version... less breaks means less commercials, means less advertising dollars. From a spectator perspective though, a fast, flowing game like Rugby League is a lot more interesting and engaging than the stop-start affair that is American Football.

My mates son is 4 yrs. He plays in the U5's it's full contact and they love it. Their tackling technique is brilliant. My son play's in the U13's and it's pure violence. Let any gym bunny hold the tackling bag for them and they'd be gone in 5 mins.

I'm a middle-aged woman and we used to play "Tap" Rugby League with the boys in High School. Of course there weren't the big hit-ups because it was Tap not Tackle but we still knocked each other down. Otherwise where's the fun? ☮❤🦘🇦🇺

Not sure how old this is, but the hits involving shoulder charges are now banned because it often opened up players to cheap shots that could not only cause injury, but concussion, a big topic these days.
