So see the clip where Messi gets tackled by the guy in white ? That guy is Alessandro Nesta & he is arguably one of the greatest defenders to ever live. To give you context, that clip was the soccer equivalent of watching Nolan Ryan striking out Babe Ruth ;)

The day you posted this this was more or less demonstrated. Real Madrid won La liga. Not by attacking a lot which they have relative problems with since C. Ronaldo left and didn't guaranty 30+ goals. But by being incredibly defensively. The small guy you saw twice, it's Roberto Carlos. Arguably one of the best left backs ever. More known for his attacking output. Had one of the hardest shots in the world.

It explains how the leagues work and the champions league (where footbal is at its best). So much of the work people dont understand when watching defending is how you take up space and close gaps as a defender. While someones defending the attacker on the ball, the rest of the defense has to make sure theyre all in line with each other and close gaps. Theres way more moving parts than you think

FTR UK uses both metric and imperial (we kind of invented imperial, when we had an empire...hence the name lool). The only 2 things we do different 1) fluid, sometimes we use litres but we also use Pints, we rarely use the gallon measure, although in Petrol/Gas stations we do, we don't use fluid Oz's though [unless its cooking], Get this...if you went into a Pub or Bar you would order a bear in Pints, but shots/spirits are in Metric measures lool, but if you went to an Off Licence/Liquor store, it would be in metric (usually ml) for both (occaisionally you find pint cans) 2) We use Stones and Lb's so when a US person says "dude weighed 200 Lb's" we have to convert that into a rough metric (2lb's is just over 1 Kg) or we have to convert to stones (14lb's in a stone). Even Kg though most UK folks have no idea about in relation to body weight , on mainland Europe its all Kg. Here its stone so I know I'm between 12- 13 stone which is about 200lb's. I actually had to work this out whilst typing and its pure coincidence that I chose a previous weight in lb's that was my weight. We use feet and inches for height and we sometimes use Yards in relation to pitches or sports fields, but sometimes meters??? and for speed and distance between cities...Miles, I know right??? We are EVEN more awkward than the US lmao We use both but not all of both...just most of both and sometimes only VERY specific parts of both, we are probably the most annoying population on earth when it comes to measurements. The irony being that many of the International "controls"/Official defined values for Standard Metric units are actually held in a London Institute

Defense cannot be captured in small clips. It lies in manmarking, offside traps, zoning and covering open space. While watching the great goals scored by the likes of Messi and Ronaldo, we must sporeciate the fact that even they have been stopped so many times by great defenders. That's what this great game is all about. Love your reviews. Keep posting.
There's an expression in football/soccer: "Games are won at front, but titles are won at the back". That is, you may win matches by scoring a bunch of goals, but you'll never win a title unless you are solid at the back.

A lot of other comments saying this.... Tackling is a last resort. If you have to make a tackle it's because your team defence has been pulled apart or someone lost discipline. The best defenders are the players who unite their team mates to force the other team to make bad decisions and cough up the ball. No tackling necessary if it works. These kind of players often make good captains, it's why so many famous captains and leaders are centre backs

Alas the true art of defence is lost in modern football go back to the 70's and 80's to see the real McCoy, I'm not just talking about the rough house stuff but back then you were allowed to actually tackle without fear of the smallest of touches resulting in some twat of a centre forward /winger rolling around on the floor in "agony". The death knell was sounded when the tackle from behind was outlawed, one of those executed properly was a thing of beauty.
