Dennis thank you for acknowledging out first responders and front line workers leading the fight in this pandemic. This reel is very interesting and I would say a work of art. Very clean design well constructed. Thanks for the education. Stay safe and Tight Lines.

I know nothing about these reels so I’m very glad you chose to do a video. By appearance it looks pretty substantial and strong. Is it a good trolling reel or for casting or both? When I clean a gear full of hard grease I spray it with WD 40 and put WD 40 on the brush and clean it as thoroughly as I can. I then wipe as much of that WD 40 off the gear as I can before regressing. My parts trays are magnetic. It helps me locate those parts that are more likely to corrode. It also helps me keep them in a certain place in the tray. I have a tray for large parts and a tray for small parts. I get confused sometimes if I put all the parts in one tray. I guess that depends on the reel. We each have to develop what system works for us and constantly evaluate what we are doing and why. This reel is quite intriguing to me. I love the simplicity of this reel. If I could see this is one I might purchase! Great video Dennis!

I've had few and still own two avets. Few things I'd like to mention. 1.The g2 (generation two) are way better than the originals and come up 2nd hand almost just as cheap as the first ones. 2. Never adjust the drag pressure with the side knob while not in freespool. You run the risk of messing up the cam if you adjust it while in any other setting. 3. The sx-mx series have the same drag range. Capacity is the difference. Never use the reels above 10lb drags or you will crunch the side bearings. I leave my sxj to 7lb at strike and max 10lb. 4. Put drag grease on your drag washer. Especially on the older models with non-glued in drag washers. Avet recommends against this but lots of real world anglers do it. You probably will lose a couple lbs off the top end of your drag range. But you shouldn't be fishing max drag. The benefits of greasing the washer is smoother drag on long fish runs. And the major benefit is water won't soak into the dry drag washer. Salt crystals will form on the washer eventually after cycles of getting wet and drying.

Anotherflores91 - Spot on advice. I've owned a dozen Avets (original, G2, and Raptors). As far as cleaning you need to coat all inner surfaces with a very light coat of grease or grease/oil mixture, you need to cover the entire main gear and drive shaft with a light coat of grease (it will rust without), you need to remove the shields and pack grease in all the bearings except the spool bearings which get oil, you need to apply grease or grease/oil mixture to the clicker, add cal's grease to the drag washer, add a bunch of grease to the washer under the handle, the handle itself, the acorn nut, and lock plate. Need to add a lot of grease inside the drag adjustment knob. You need to add grease to all of the screws when reinstalling to prevent galvanic corrosion between the dissimilar metals. Need to add a bunch of grease where the studs screw into the reel foot for the rod clamp. I always remove the the reel foot and apply grease underneath it. Also if there's the slightest bit of roughness when reeling at moderate drag (starts feeling like a coffee grinder) you need to replace the pinion bearing which is the most common failure point on these reels.

Dennis , I’m having an issue with an avet mxl 5.8:1 (with Torx screws The handle slips forwards while holding the spool from spinning . Any suggestion as to what is going on ? Is the pinion gear worn out ? I don’t really see any stripped area on it . Thank you so much for your great videos !!
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
That is very hard to say as it could be anything in the drive chain and not just the Pinion gear. You need to take the reel apart and examine everything. A slip could be the result of a worn drag, a scarred pressure plate, a worn spring , etc. Sorry I can't help pin it down further - Dennis
