They're power supplies used to step down the voltage of the wall into something that won't immediately kill whatever you're powering. They're bulky because they physically have to be, you can't make software to stepdown voltage, so you need actual components which take up room. If you don't want all of that heavy, bulky, heat producing components inside your system, then you have no choice but to make a box.

The QSound system in the 32x was extremely poorly documented, apparently. You know what else was terribly underused? The Ricoh sound chip in the Sega CD. Not every game for the SCD used CD audio, and almost all of those disappointingly used the YM2612 for sound instead of the Ricoh chip, which is a shame because the Ricoh chip had eight channels of ADPCM, with volume control, panning, and even ASDR envelope support. The only thing it didn't have was an echo/reverb filter, which isn't that big a deal. TBH, they should have given the Genesis a chip like that to begin with.

+PiccoloNamek you know your Sega hardware. I studied Nintendo and Playstation consoles hardware a bit, but skipped over the Sega ones for some reason. The music on a of sega games always reminded me of the later Yamaha chips like OPL2 and 3. I'm guessing it had an older yamaha chipset. Very 80s synth sounding. Thanks for the info.
@LunarDelta
@LunarDelta 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the original Genesis had a standalone Yamaha YM2612. Other versions had a YM3438 that was integrated into a general purpose chip on the motherboard. The latter was better because it had far less DAC noise, but also worse because people had actually been creatively using the DAC noise to make special effects and now they couldn't do that, and games that made use of it wouldn't play back properly. The new chip also had a terrible amplification circuit.

The second cable from the Genesis to the 32X is due to (I believe) the 32X doing all the work, with the Genesis essentially providing controller signals. You could probably modify it to work as a standalone console

I don't think it was that severe. That just seems very implausible to begin with. I don't even think it damaged the Genesis at all.
@jarnoob
@jarnoob 9 жыл бұрын
Mike DiLoreto the second cable is there because the genesis drew the characters etc. and the 32x infact only drew the background. So the video signals were merged in 32x. And yes, this is the worst imaginable way to do it.

You can. I've seen people solder the 32x processor to the Genesis and simply use the Genesis to play 32x games. Not that there is anything worth playing.
@meetoo594
@meetoo594 6 жыл бұрын
@jarnoob It was the other way round, genesis drew the backgrounds whilst the 32x overlaid the 3d graphics and sprites. 32x wasnt bad actually, space harrier and afterburner were pretty much arcade perfect and virtua racing and kolibri were far superior to anything a base genesis could run.

Super Famicom games don't have endlabels either, though! It makes you think - out of all the conscious design choices around Nintendo consoles, one of them was to eliminate endlabels. It gets even worse when you realise this: *Famicom* games didn't have endlabels! We only had endlabels on NES cartridges in Europe and Australia because we used the NES design - so, the NES was adapted for the US market, but not for Europe (can't speak for Australia - I'm English). And Nintendo wondered why the NES failed over here... I went to Japan a few years ago, and when my host mother heard that I'd bought some SFC carts, she dug out her old Super Famicom from her attic with about 5 games, insisting upon me taking it home with me. Here's the thing: she still had the game boxes, which I've also held on to, and the lack of endlabels doesn't matter because of the boxes. Maybe the lack of endlabels was never noticed in Japan because it was common to hold onto the boxes, which most western gamers would instead throw out. What do you reckon?

I think I read somewhere that Sega of America designed the 32X not knowing Sega of Japan was working on the Saturn at the same time, so that's called one hand not taling to the other. And about Nintendo's end labels: Keep in mind that the US NES and SNES cartridges are completely different from the Japanese Famicom and Super Famicom cartridges (which didn't have end labels) while the N64 had the same cartridge designs around the world, so Nintendo didn't just stop using end labels, Nintendo of America just stopped changing the design of the whole consoles for no reason.

To be clear, they had a purpose to rework Nes from Famicom - they though after the video game market crash because of Atari, people wouldn't buy Famicom if it looked like a toy, so that's why Nes looks more like a vcr player.

Even now in 2014 we still have electronics with polar sensitive connectors that are those humongous boxes at the end. We understand they're voltage regulators and fuses but damn, have them all at the middle of the cord (3:25) and the plug typically being universal fit. There are power strips specifically made for connecting multiple adapters but damn does it get jumbled, look ugly, and are expensive. His intro to the Doublevision (Part 2) is hilarious. *dramatically struggles to pick up the adapter* "What the fuck were they thinking?!?! Is this necessary? MarioKart7z It's gotta be companies who have a deal with power strip companies to make you chain together generic ones and blow your house up if you don't manage it as you should. Can't think of any other reason why we've got them a million years later. I can only have two of those pieces of shit connected to a generic power strip at a time, so I had to plug that one into another in the middle and keep the two off when they're not in use.
