This is exactly a bad gestion of situation. CRM is one of the most important thing in a cockpit and in this case we see and experience how fast a flight can become out of hands.

Nice to see such an abundance of comments. Just to clarify: This video was originally part of a test package under the JAR TEL project investigating whether objective assessment by instructors and examiners was possible. Being part of the CRM trainer group I actually was the one putting "MAERSK AIR" on the video 20 years ago as we took part in the study and got permission to use the videos in our CRM training. Unfortunately my old airline ceased to exist in 2006.

The airline went but the videos live on - and they are greatly appreciated. BTW, I hope the woman in 2B was all right.

Great video. Captain was a bully, trying to do everyones job for them. Problem is, he forgot to do his job. These people do exist in commercial aviation.

1. Hand over R/T to the FO (then you have a chance to have a clear communication with the CCM and to have the mental resources to analyse the situation. The priority here is to assess the medical problem and then make a plan, not to handle routine ATC). 2. Get a clear picture from CCM: is this a medical emergency? - yes, no, maybe. 3. Request appropriate support from ATC (priority, medical assistance). 4. Land.

The priority isn’t the medical issue but flying the plane. Hand over of the radio is probably not a good idea with this First Officer. He has poor situational awareness.

I'm not a professional pilot and maybe you are. I'm just a former private pilot. I thought flying the plane was the number one priority so the Captain managing the R/T and the F/O ensuring the flight path first then manage the passenger issue when the workload is lower and aircraft in the hold would seem to me the best option. I'm just guessing or suggesting and I wonder how a Captain would have resolved properly this situation. The video is very interresting. Friendly.

The Flight Attendants entering in the flight deck below FL200 because she is worrying with a passenger who could represent a medical emergency is a pretty interresting scenario... With the Captain being the Pilot Monitoring with a lot of ATC instructions in a congested airspace... All that with the induced confusion on the hold to follow... A pretty good example of how too much workload can make you miss an assigned altitude... Golden video !

Clearly orchestrated to put the pressure on. But a good example of a stressed Captain and a intimidated First Officer. But it is interesting to listen to the myriad of atc instructions. Not a good day all round...

Great video. Lots of overlapping CRM skills lacking here leading to a continuous descent down the TEM triangle fowards a UAS. - Failure to actively monitor, leading to poor workoad management, leading to a loss of SA.

So, in actual flying conditions, perhaps the Capt. could have utilized the cabin medical event/report to insist on a priority descent and landing clearance. He could have also taken over as flying pilot until the completion of the flight, and left the F/O to handle the radio, as it seemed that the F/O was pretty clear in relation to the ATC instructions provided right throughout but hazy in relation to the approach and landing plate (chart). He (the F/O) could have also insisted (with the captain's approval) that there be no other disturbances from the cabin except the "cabin clear" notification. Great simulated fluster performed by this crew. Thanks.

Chest pain sound like it could be heart attack, in that situation, I would declare a medical emergency also possibly using "lifeline" before the call-sign to get priority handling without hesitation. The hold for 15-20 minutes would be detrimental to the passengers life!

Interesting example. I wonder whether this was set up and used as a video for a class instruction in CRM later to see if they could pick the faults? None of the crew members were working at their peak performance with a very mediocre outcome.

Peter.. It was a video we used in my old company.. (Edited by myself actually..) It was made by a group under the then JAR as a sample for line check pilots to evaluate non-technical skills. The aim was to see if there was any way to standardise the evaluation of those skills. A report was written by the group. My old airline took part in this survey and we were allowed to use the videos for CRM and instructor training. The scenario is set up for illustration purposes and does not reflect any actual incident. (Albeit probably at the time a plausible one. Mind you the video is from 1998)

@@H3Odiver your videos are lengendary ! By the way, I wonder what was supposed to be the good CRM of the crew in this situation ? I'm not a professionnels pilot, just a former private pilot. I think that the best course of actions and decisions would have been: - for the Captain to delay the resolution of the passenger issue until workload lower when established on the hold once informés by the flight attendant. - it would permit the Captain to keep catching ATC instructions below FL200 in a congested aircraft. - the F/O would have clear communication with the Captain to coordinate with. Once on the hold and surely established on a stable altitude and "route" with a known estimated time, it would have been easier to discuss again with the flight attention to fix the issue or take a decison before communicating it to ATC. It's just my suggestion and I'm completely untrained and ignorant with CRM. I just like to guess if it would be a decent possibility. Thanks again for having putting this on KZbin !

+John Smith It's a bit harsh for you to judge someone's competency without knowing the full facts. The FO was definitely distracted by the background conversation. We don't know if the airport has unusual and/or complex procedures, or if it was a short flight and they couldn't do a full approach brief, or if the FO had never visited this airport before, or if there's a sudden change in conditions such as a runway change making most of the approach brief useless, or if there are special constraints (e.g. NOTAMs, maintenance work, special airspace, noise abatement procedures) or priority military traffic. He might even be suffering from fatigue or migraines. What I see is the FO trying to second-guess and make sense of what the ATC is trying to do, while the controller is vectoring him all over the place. He got distracted, couldn't make his mind compute, the captain didn't double-check the autopilot inputs as required for a monitoring pilot, and there's a level bust.

Nice acting on a Shitty Captain and inexperienced First Officer. Poor CRM and poor leadership. Always fly the plane first and everything else can wait. If ATC piss you around, just tell them to standby.

I'm not a professional pilot, just a former private pilot with small experience. No training in CRM. I find your comment interresting as it seems pretty close to the basics to me. I think the best course of action (with my ignorance and lack of experience) would have been for the Captain to just take the info from the flight attendant then delay the management of the issue until the aircraft is beginning the hold, in a moment with way less workload. It would have permit clear commun between ATC, the Captain, and the shy F/O. With a stable altitude in a holding partern with a known time I guess it would have been easier to manage the issue rather than in descent in congested area with constent ATC instructions... And in the hold, a decision can be taken and thereafter communicated to ATC when the cockpit is sterile once again... It's easier said than done I confess and it's suggested by a non professionnal. I am curious to know what a good CRM would be in this situation. And yes, the Captain is responsible of the aircraft and ATC comes after flying the plane. There are a lot of missed instructions in every airspace in the world because well, we are all humans managing tasks... Very interresting video !
