Josh, Josh, Josh. You threw yourself under the bus. I'm gonna script for ya. "Because we needed to park at the end of the runway, I kept a couple knots of airspeed so that we could fly down the runway a bit to minimize the taxi distance." Hey, man. I'm watching you. Your videos are becoming better and better and your running commentary is very educational. As a very old guy who started lessons at 16 and instructed through college and first years of marriage, I racked up about 4500 hours of flight time, most of which was in a 1966 172 and a 68 182. I'm 70 years old now, not flying but instead, flying vicariously through you and some others who have KZbin channels. You da man. P.S. Most of my flying was at Stephenville, TX, so we are practically neighbors. Now lliving in SoCal so I love your CA adventures.

Love Halter Ranch. Landed there early 2023 in my Mooney. Touched down right where the pavement widens. Worked perfectly. They told me they had plans for runway improvements but it doesn't look like that has happened. Had the good fortune to drive there the day before flying in. Really helped us get a good visual for landing the next day. On another note, had a laugh at the title calling the hills mountains. I guess when you are from Texas they are mountains. Those of us native Californians call them hills! If you want to see real mountains, head east.

Since starting to get my private certificate I have grown to really appreciate the skill set, not only for planning like Josh does. But also how you are able to stick a landing on a runway that is about as wide as the width of the wings. I live on the west coast and will make this a stop for my fiancée and I, Great videos.

Welcome back to Northern California and the a Central Coast. Paso Robles is a great destination, so is San Luis Obispo. ACIJet is another great FBO. The fog is less of an issue at Paso Robles so that’s my go to now, great town, wineries, hotels, and restaurants. My first trip to San Luis Obispo was interesting. Beautiful flight in, tied down, got to hotel and some un-forecasted fog rolled in for the next 3 days, no way out VFR. We kept the rental car and drove home to Sacramento. I returned a few days later to pickup the plane in nice weather. That’s the central coast for you. Driving home my wife suggested maybe I should get my instrument rating, good thinking honey, a year later I got that done. Highly recommended area for pilots to fly in, stay a few days, you will enjoy it.

Excellent video! I fly out of KSBP and have enjoyed visiting Halter Ranch by car, but so far I have not flown in yet. Maybe one day! Also, probably the right decision on not getting flight following, but FYI if you had, you can pick up LA Center (and SBA TRACON, which handles low altitude flight following during normal hours) pretty well in most parts of the central coast even at low altitude, as they have well placed repeaters on the mountain peaks.

If I remember correctly for the pattern altitude you can just click airport, set altitude 1000 AGL and then add an offset like -3NM. That way you don't need to lookup field elevation.

I am not even a student pilot, I am in the decision phase, However, I am not to sure if it was discussed. What was your departure fuel, did you fly with enough or they provided with departure fuel...? Also upon the departure, where are you getting the weather from...?
@AV4Life6 ай бұрын
For VFR (which is what you’ll be doing as a student pilot) you’re supposed to fly with enough fuel to overfly your destination by an additional 30 minutes, during the daytime at least. But that is just a legal minimum, and most fly with at least 1 hour or more depending on the nature of the flight… Minus some of the legal minimums described above, departure fuel is up to pilot discretion… You get weather information from many different avenues. Metar, TAF, ATIS, radar controllers, EFB (like ForeFlight or Garmin), weather briefs, or displayed on your map in the cockpit (depending on the avionics of the airplane), to name a few.

It’s a great place to fly into but isn’t for a novice. I’m not a fan of their system of making sure the field workers don’t cross the runway by staff keeping eyes on them when they clear you to land. Too many crossing from field to field with an active runway.
