As the saying goes among older pilots, "better to be on the ground wishing you could get in the air than to be in the air wishing you could get on the ground". Get there itis, has killed a lot of people who always think they can probably make it. Better to not push lady luck because she sometimes kicks your butt. I like how you both collaborated on decisions and had things figured out long before you got there. Great Job Chelse.

Josh, real glad you decided to make a video about this. Extremely informative for GA pilots and especially for those low time pilots that probably would never think of this scenerio. I had mentioned this in my reply to you so I hope that inspired you to do this teaching video. Either way, well done and hopefully some one will apply this to a flight they make someday.

Great video Josh & Chelsea! I really enjoyed this video, it can be particularly challenging, flying into small airports, especially if they are uncontrolled in inclement weather. As much as I enjoy my fair share of bad weather, cloud surfing, and dodging, thunderstorms I like how you show off all the nice features of Garmin and the Garmin Pilot and weather systems as well as safe practices for flying into weather being that you are a flight instructor… I really appreciate your insights and all your videos are educational, teach me something new, fun to watch and I feel make people better pilots! Cheers 🥂 my friend Caleb’s Aviation

Josh--I am a low time student working on my commercial license and I appreciate your videos. So much to learn in aviation and just because you pass a checkride doesn't mean you have learned it all. A lot gets learned from doing. I appreciate watching the videos you put out as they really teach me a lot. Sitting here relaxed watching a video and the learning gets absorbed (real world learning), absorbed sometimes better and faster than when i have the book opened as I am then focusing on and trying to absorb so many things. Thanks for the vids.

I’m 72yo. I was a 18yo student pilot with about 30 hours I was on a cross country in a Cessna 150. It was late Spring, early Summer, out of PDK. It was decent weather, somewhat cloudy but predicted to stay the same and no rain. It was a route into South Carolina and back. Outbound travel was as expected, no issues. Inbound starting changing as we got deeper into GA. Not bad, but not as predicted. I’d planned my course to flyby ATH, I always planned with paranoia. The weather continued to slowly close in. I chose to land at AHN to check the FBO about conditions toward PDK. It was ‘comfortably’ above minimums and expected to stay that way. I was told by some pilots and a couple of others that I could make it in to PDK. So I decided to go. I was about halfway and just above minimums. Best decision I made, I set a reciprocal course and landed back at AHN. Maybe I could have made it to PDK but there was nothing at all the required me to. Even at 18, I knew, that bad things happened. I had no interest in adding to that list. I tied down the plane, called the flight school and told them where I was and I’d seen them tomorrow. I was very happy with my decision. Probably in the top 5 decisions I’ve ever made.

Reminds me of the time a had to dodge 5 thunderbumpers in a '77 172 in a winding and weaving approach into 13R at Tyndall AFB. They were really tight maturing storms. I touched down in very similar precip to this, got to the ramp and stopped in front of the pump. I opened the door and the bottom dropped out! I had to sit in the plane for 40 minutes till the storm moved north, got her refueled and pushed back into the parking spot and tied down when ANOTHER storm hit and brought 50kt straight-line winds for 25 minutes. I had to drive though 2 more on the way back home!

The situational awareness you had would have paid dividends should you arrived even 10 mins later. Talk about proper timing! Great ADM. Definitely a tough one to make. I'd say the distance the cell was in proximity to the airport should be your personal minimum. Love the shorter videos - if you post a 15 min every 5 days, that will keep me honest. So I really enjoy your videos - as a British IFR rated pilot flying a Cessna 182 it's fascinating to see the similarities and differences in the system on your side of the Pond, not to mention the drama of Big Weather as you have in this story. But I have to ask the obvious - why try to land there in the first place? With a great big CB sitting plumb on the end of the airfield wouldn't the wise choice be to get the hell out and find somewhere else to land? In the UK we're taught to avoid CBs by 15-20nm if possible. Nobody can predict what they may or may not do to an airplane within that range. So why take the risk at all? You had two alternates from what I could see. And yet you chose not to use them. As you say yourself you only just made it in before the heavens seriously opened - but doesn't that rather prove the point that an earlier decision to avoid altogether might have been more sensible? Ten minutes (or less) later things might have been less pretty.

You would have turned away from the storm as soon as possible, therefore also low and slow, and aiming away from the storm to turn downwind, if the microburst woulda hit you then it would have been just as nasty.
