Another super, clear and easy to understand video Julian. I love the fact that even old boys like me can take tips from this, helping us not only to understand how we SHOULD do it, but more importantly to be clear how we SHOULDN’T be doing what we’re currently are. Steve Barnes

We should never stop learning Stephen, but then the skill is not to over complicate things. A fine line sometimes. Thanks for your kind message 😀👍

Good video Julian. I think the concentration from Tom was the left shoulder. I've tried many swing theories over the years (including the Easiest Swing) However, I always revert and refer back to the book written by Dr. H.A. Murray. He eloquently states the left shoulder (architectural shoulder left hand side of upper body) moves down in the back swing and up in the forward swing. All other movements are automatic and compensatory. Apart from posture the point of concentration should always be on the left shoulder, together with the feeling of swinging upwards with the upper arms on both the backswing and forward swing. Even works on putting, chipping etc. This book IMO is the golfer's Bible.

Thanks Graham, I listened to Tom talking about his swing quite a lot but never really heard him talk about his left shoulder, but not to say he didn’t. I will check out your suggestion

I think there's too many coaches going for the " correct positions" approach to the swing.... I started watching your explanations and must admit that I am now more relaxed and free flowing, actually swing slower but timing and consistency are greatly improved and striking the better and have gained distance..... wahay!!! 🌟🎊🤩🥳

You’re so right John, golfers are trying to recreate unnatural positions that they see elite players doing and it’s making the swing so difficult to repeat and worse still getting injured.

Thank you for a very thorough analysis of Tom's swing. I have made some notes but will watch it several times. A lot of important tips with your guide to his swing.

I like to give credit to anybody who is helpful & does a good job. I did notice your comment , but was not sure it was me. When I receive poor service or a person doing an unsatisfactory job I make a point of complaining very forcibly to the most senior person in charge. Several workmen learned about their unsatisfactory work , when their boss sorted them out very forcibly. I have been helped by several excellent golf pros but some were very poor teachers only interested in trying to make money. I informed the so called golf pros as well as many golfers at the club. Julian has given me excellent, valuable advice to suit my age & ability. I only wish I had Julian as my first golf teacher ,rather than a money grabbing pro whose instruction was designed for a scratch , 20 year old very promising golfer. When I taught I catered for the full range of ability in all my classes. I still meet several of my old pupils who remember me & still like me.

So clearly expressed. Thank you. Tom's been a hero of mine all my life. He was so unlucky not to win that last major at 59!

Brilliant lesson Julian I love Tom Watson and have his book. I’ve tried to copy this but also cut my backswing to 3/4 my hands no higher than my shoulder resulting in more consistent straight shots and even though I’m 74 my handicap has reduced from 22 to 15. The secret ? Keep it simple.

Another great video Julian! especially the wrist hinge and release ! I was at the Open in 2009 when Tom was unlucky not to win (finishing second after a play off with Stewart Cink) and he was 59 then! was one of the all time greats! his swing looks simple too! thanks! Cheers Eddie

Thanks Eddie, it would have been the greatest sporting achievement ever I believe, just hit his approach shot too well on the last, nobody got up and down when they went over the back of the green. Certainly one of the all time greats 😀

Julian, A really good video with your usual excellent instruction. Just one small criticism. I think you have some "music" in the background that intermittently sounds on my phone as though you have a distressed cat in the background. Perhaps better without that, considering it's quite a lengthy explanation you are giving. It is just a thought!

Julian - a super video and which complements the easy swing principles that you advocate - and which I try to follow - at times though I feel that I am tending to rush the downswing and do you have any tips to avoid this and so have better consistency.

Thanks for your kind message. I enjoyed studying Tom so I could share his thoughts and beliefs on the swing. With regards to rushing, remember max club head speed is just after the ball strike and not before. I’ll attempt to make a video on this subject when I get time. 👍😀

Thank you for this example. When hitting a draw, do you half to change your grip, or do you move around the ball to the right? When you look at the target do you look out to where the ball is going to go, or do you look at the target?
@JulianMellor
@JulianMellor 9 ай бұрын
You don’t need to change your grip Larry, just body alignment to change the swing path and release of the club head correctly 👍
