I am a commercial Avocado grower in Southern California, a couple of observations. That tree was definitely in poor shape, it had not been watered for some time, leafs were droopy. Ground should have been moist as well, otherwise the dry soil will take all moisture away from tree. Clay soul not the best soil to plant Avocados in to as they retain the moisture too long, and may cause Phitophera (root Rot) something Avocados are highly prone to getting. Definitely apply sun block, but don't apply to leafs, as this will inhibit photosynthesis. Also don't make a barrier to hold water against trunk, its best if you water slowly, small amounts and frequently, but allow soil to get dry so roots can take in oxygen, between irrigation. Otherwise interesting video.

@Salvador Dominguez What is the best way to grow an avocado tree in Zone 7b? Do I need a greenhouse?
@salvadordominguez59256 жыл бұрын
@@rd4469 Avocados are native to the Southern part of Mexico and Honduras. They can tolerate temperatures as low as 30* Fahrenheit, but much lower than that they will be damages. Lower than 27* for a few hours will kill it. So a Hothouse would be the only option. Hass likes to take up space, GEM is more upright and a smaller highly productive tree. Not sure if they are available to general public. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the most important tip for planting an avocado tree. I learnt it the hard way by losing an excellent plant! The top of the soil that the plant comes with must never be inserted beneath the surrounding soil or the plant will die! Now I usually leave about an inch above when planting to compensate for eventual settling in the hole.

My bacon made it through, unfortunately my Haas didn’t do well. It was decimated by a June bug infestation.They basically ate all the leaves off it. I’m hoping it recovers in the fall. The branches although leafless, are still flexible. I have a shade cloth structure over it to protect it. Hopefully I won’t have to replace it. :( I do appreciate your channel. I've always whitewashed my fruit trees in So. Cal., but have always refrained from using brown paint because some say only diluted flat latex is safe. Brown would be so much more attractive. Hey Charles, today I received my second order of IV Organic 3 in 1. My first can is white and after I bought it my husband said he would prefer brown or green on our young avocado tree. So I got the green but after applying it to the avocado trunk I'm wishing I bought the brown. Oh well. Regardless, I'm excited to have it protected from our S. Florida summer sun. I also used it on a few other things like passion fruit, and a couple of grafting projects. I'll probably use the white for a leaf spray. I appreciate your advice! :)

However, I do not think the product is organic... there is a lot of conflicting information on the benefits of this product. Note, the value of B1 on plants is not as well recognized today for relieving transplant shock, as it was once believed to be 10+ years ago. Hi when planting a Hass Avocodo in a 50 lt container, should I add compost and fertilizer to the container bottom and mix it in the soil a bit? I have heard that it may be too strong for a container since the roots are limmeted to where they can go, and the tree could burn out. on the other hand I want nice fruit and the tree to grow. What's your take?
@IVOrganic8 жыл бұрын
Hello Beit Shemesh and Beyond, I advise that you use a quality potting soil mix, not just compost. Container plants benefit from having soil that can better absorb water with ingredients such as moss, coconut coir, vermiculite and/ or perlite-- In addition to some compost. The compost will break down offering the plant nutrients over time. Adding organic fertilizer to both the bottom and top of the contain soil is my preference. Additionally, I would only add about 1/2 the recommended amount initially as the plant's roots get established. You can feed your plant with a granular fertilizer 3x per year, Spring, Summer and Fall. If you lessen the recommend amount of feeding by 25-50% you can feed your plants using organic liquid fertilizers (such as fish and kelp-based products) to help offer the plant a more broad spectrum of nutrients. I hope this helps! Good luck and keep me posted on your gardening successes! :-) Charles

Hello Charles! I have a couple questions for you. I tried scrolling down to read the previous posts and didn't see my questions, sorry if it's a repeat! I am curious about the spray bit. You painted on the trunk but sprayed the tree leaves. 1) could you skip "painting" the trunk and just spray the hell out of it with the same leaf spray stuff? I went online to look at the two products and they read fairly similar. Just curious if I could use the spray only. I just picked up a Hass from the local gardening store and I do not see any browning. So I am wondering if I could just be lazy at this point, on a preventive measure. 2) If I am not able to pot it in the ground until I am able to move (a couple of years from now), What would you recommend for dirt/fertilizer and that it will be well drained? I have Perlite and basic potting soils, but I am just curious about the combination for potted soil. Thank you so much!! I just stumbled upon your account. Very to the point and well executed; I subscribed!

Awesome video! IV Organic, i have a nice little backyard and was contemplating planting a date palm tree and a fig tree, could you please give me some guidance? Second question: what are some nice other fruit trees ( or veggies) would recommend planting? I live in Atlanta.
@IVOrganic7 жыл бұрын
Hello Awa, Thank you for the compliment! :-) And I am glad you are planting what are considered to be tropical-looking plants that will look gorgeous in your landscape and provide you and your friends and family with excellent quality organic foods for many years! With dates, there are male and female trees... so you will need to purchase 2 trees for successful pollination! With regards to the fig, there are some varieties that will want to grow 20+ feet, and other varieties that will only grow to about 10 feet. All fig varieties can be (and should be) managed with pruning.. but you should be selective in how much work you want to invest in pruning and if your garden would look best with a larger or smaller frame tree. Some suggestions to consider adding to your garden is a Eureka lemon tree (lemons are great for your health and can be used for marinades, salad dressings and of course, lemonade). Must do veggies are tomatoes and zucchinis. Keep me posted on your growing successes!!! :-) Charles

How is this Tree doing 5 years Later?

Hiya ....What states are good for having productive avacado plants ....ty
@IVOrganic8 жыл бұрын
Hello Long Island Teresa, Rather than answering which states avocado's can grow, it is more appropriate to find out what the growing zone is that you are seeking to plant the avocado tree. Avocado's can be grown in growing zones 8-11. Some Mexican varieties of Avocados, once established, can handle some winter night time lows a cold as 20 degrees Fahrenheit! To find out what your growing zone is, you can enter your zip code here: www.plantmaps.com/90068 If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me! :) Charles

We are in 7b.... Do I dare even try? We eat a lot of avocados.
@IVOrganic7 жыл бұрын
Hello Shelly, So growing zone 7b has winter night time temps that range between 5-10 degrees F. That is way too cold, for even the most frost tolerant varieties of avocados. You can attempt to grow the avocado pit to create a beautiful tropical avocado house plant.... But no avocados without warmer weather and sufficient sunlight. So, I do not recommend attempting... other than for the benefit of having a beautiful houseplant. Sorry to not have more positive news. Charles

sounds like a good challenge... i live in vermont, which as one might tell gets some pretty harsh winters... but, i have a solarium, and plenty of sunlight during the day with south facing windows. i would like to be able to grow my own avocado tree, and even have produce from it. be that as it may, i am not really much of a gardener, or a green thumb, but i absolutely Love avocados, so to have my own producer of them woudl be epic. i keep my house at about 70ºF almost all year round, so that may not be an issue... i just started a seed today, and figured i would see how it went. in any case, its pretty incredible to think of what it takes to cultivate Life, as such, and how specialized the avocado is to human care, at least in so far as what we do with them.

Hi Charles, i really enjoyed the video. I successfully planted an avocado tree here in Friendswood, TX in the past. It lasted four years until a nasty freeze killed it. I currently purchased a Lila avocado tree, but am thinking about using a 30 gallon container. I alos was considering planting in on the side of my fence or in my back yard by my inground pool, but am concerned about the evasivness of the roots. Could you please give me some tips. I plan to buy the IV Organc. Thanks. Gerald

When is right time to transplant your avocado from it's water container into the soil container?
@IVOrganic8 жыл бұрын
Hello Ernest, As soon as the plant has more than an inch of roots and/ or an inch of growth, I would transplant the avocado seedling into a 1 gallon container. Be sure to use potting soil as it has properties for better absorbing water and keeping the plant hydrated between watering. Let me know if you have any other questions! Happy Gardening! :) Charles

I am up in Washington State in the middle of the rainy season. Can I take an Avocado seed and just stick it straight into the ground? Skipping the steps of putting it in glass or pot? What would happen? )
@IVOrganic8 жыл бұрын
Hello Etienne, Yes you can plant avocado seed(s) directly into the ground, without starting with a potted plant. However, beware with seeds that may (1) take 5 to 10+ years to get to fruit bearing age, and (2) may produce inferior fruit quality than the avocado fruit you consumed because the seed, like children can be totally different than its parents! :) It is recommend that seedlings be grafted with known successful tasting and yielding varieties, such as Hass, Fuerte, Bacon, etc.... Also, by starting the avocado seed indoors in a window with morning sun (East or Southern window) the seed will germinate sooner and get a head start by the time you transplant into the ground in Spring. Let me know if you have any other questions. Charles :)

can I plant one of the dwarf varieties in a planter? what dimensions would you recommend for the planter?
@IVOrganic7 жыл бұрын
Hello Markman63, Ideally you will want to gradually graduate the container from the size you purchase the tree (typically starts in a 3 gallon container) and eventually grow the dwarf variety in a 15 to 30 gallon container-- The larger the better. However, if you must bring the tree inside for the winter due to freezing winter (depending on where you live), you may want to not exceed 15 gallons for the ease of moving the tree. Also, be sure to use a quality potting soil (not garden soil or compost alone) as a potting soil better retains moisture between watering. I hope this helps! Charles :-)

Hey IV Organic, I was wondering what if the root ball was pot bound?
@IVOrganic8 жыл бұрын
Hello Brandon, If the avocado is coiling at the bast of the pot (root bound), I would try to straighten it our before cutting because I have noticed that avocado trees are more stressed that most other types of fruit trees at the time of planting. I have a fig tree that I will be repotting late winter/ early spring that is root bound and I will actually cut the root bound roots off-- And prune some of the branches to offset the stress to the roots. Most deciduous fruit trees can be handled the same way. Let me know if this answers your question? I am here to help! :) Charles
