I was thinking: this is world record for fastest infinitely expandable BUT not fastest possible, an actually unbeatable record would have an instant retraction aswell (which wouldn't really be a retraction, it would just be the extension but flipped so it instantly goes back again) what I'm describing is much harder than what you built, but with my mediocre redstone knowledge I have concluded that although difficult, it is possible to make and I will be patiently waiting until someone does make it in the future

I think it wouldnt be that hard. Just by looking at it in the video, I'd guess the contraption theoretically can be triggered from both sides, so if you flip the direction the extender pistons are facing and trigger the contraption from the opposite side it should be able to teleport blocks into the other direction. The only problem remaining then is to flip the extender pistons automatically. As there is a one block gap in front of each extender piston (when the machine is not activated) you can place the opposite facing pistons there and then use a slime block conveyor to shift all pistons by one block. The opposite facing pistons in the gap will receive a 0 tick but I dont think thats problematic as long as you place immovable blocks at both ends of the contraption

The silly solution is to line up two of these next to or on top of eachother but oriented in opposite directions, and have the block come to a rest on each end before being suffled into the next machine and then instantaneously extended

If you kind of skew the definition of a piston extender a bit, couldn't you have a second instant piston extender to the side for the retraction to move the block instantly? You then would just need to reset the extender (and new retracter line) which I think would just take 3 gt flat right?

If you skew the definition further, you can just make the block being extended be cobblestone, so you can destroy it and make a new one at the beginning.

You should look up a "piston bolt" they are not quite the same but people have used them for fast transport for a long time

I think it is theoretically possible to send the block instantly the other direction in the same exact "trough", yes the retraction is three ticks per section, but only if it's carrying the block with it. Instantly retracted, leaving the block behind, and use a different set of Pistons extending it in the opposite direction along the same trough to send it back instantly. Space constraints may make this impossible though. The real question though, is can you get it going in a circle and make a particle accelerator?
