Thank you so much for talking about this! I have OCD and the amount of misinformation/misled ideas people have about the subject makes me feel misunderstood and invisible. It's great to spread this knowledge to more folks and feel heard.

ive had a similar experience of feeling extreme anxiety and depression after a week of averaging 4 hrs of sleep a night and barely eating while still exercising like a maniac at the gym. I woke one day feeling like was run over a truck. As the day progressed I became more and more depressed and anxious. By night, I experienced suicidal ideation and fear of loss of control. The next day, I felt better. As the day progressed, I began to feel more happy and sociable. This continued until I went to sleep. The next day, I felt debilitatingly depressed and anxious with suicidal ideation and fear of loss of control. I went to urgent care and was tentatively diagnosed with bipolar. yadda yadda yadda, OCD was never mentioned nor did I ever think that was a possibility. I can be anal about certain things but nothing extreme like this dude. I can compulsively google stuff and enter a google rabbit hole marathon. This video has compelled to look into possibly having OCD myself.

This was a fascinating interview learning about Brad's journey with OCD & I found him to be very articulate & intelligent. I believe one needs to get to the root of the problem; "peeling back the layers" in which involves dealing with your unprocessed emotional Trauma. "No matter where you go, there you are".

In rowing, you want to push with mind-blowing effort when doing the actual rowing stroke - but if you rush the recovery to get to the next stroke as quickly as possible, you give yourself less time to recover and you "check" the boat, meaning you slow it down. Thus negating all that hard effort you just put in. Don't rush the recovery. The recovery keeps you moving.

I think this is my favorite episode of the Rich Roll podcast so far! Finding alignment with all our competing values is such a challenge, and I loved that this episode acknowledged the tension among competing values and provided so many wise tools for finding our path. Excellent! I've always associated 'acceptance' with 'surrendering'. Just the word acceptance alone makes me think of conceding... giving in...giving up! But for awhile now, I prefer the word EMBRACE. Embrace the challenges...embrace the negatives...embrace the failures...and move forward. Learn from them. Use them as a catalyst to go on. 😁

Life is evolution. We see it and must acknowledge it within us. No need to ever compare ourselves to others EXCEPT for viewing, sharing, experiences that can contribute to the evolution we want to see in ourselves. I always find it fascinating and worthwhile to learn about someone’s struggles. Although I think Brad seems very green to the field of mental health and the causes of cognitive disorders. OCD, and all mental illness, at its core, is unprocessed emotional trauma. The OCD is a coping mechanism. Heal your trauma, and the disease subsides. There’s also a physical component to it, so the more toxic behaviors you pollute your body with amplifies the problem. I do applaud Brad for quickly seeking help, as suicidal desires are a serious issue. Many ppl brush it under the rug. I question the professional advice he got though. I think working on and identifying the underlying emotional and spiritual issues at the core of mental disorders is a long process. Recovering your mental health is a long process. A better analogy than the one at the start of the video would be that many ppl don’t spend much time investing in their mental health and have roots similar to a redwood tree. What you want are deep roots, like that of an oak or walnut tree. Therefore even the strongest storms don’t cause your life to be uprooted and turned into a mess.

He later describes the roots as being entangled in others nearby, which is what gives strength; equating it to the importance of community.

Hi Timmy - thanks for listening in and commenting. I am replying here because I think it is important to set the record straight on OCD -- the therapeutic approach I described in this conversation is the gold-standard, evidence based treatment for OCD. One of the *worst* things an individual suffering from OCD can do is try to identify the source of their obsessions, be it trauma or anything else. What you want to do is let the thoughts lose power of you, not feed them. This is well-known amongst any evidence-based therapist. You, and perhaps others, can learn more here, which is a great resource for all mental health issues: www.madeofmillions.com/conditions/obsessive-compulsive-disorder It's a topic I care deeply about and am quite proficient on. Steven C Hayes, the founder of acceptance and commitment therapy and one of the most cited clinical psychologists in the world reviewed the book with close attention to all of the mental health advice. So I am highly confident. And yes, anyone suffering from any kind of distress that feels overwhelming should seek professional help. I would recommend trying to find a therapist with training in ACT, CBT, MCBT, or DBT. Thanks again for listening. Peace and Love, Brad

For the past few years I've avoided driving at night & have avoided tunnels highways, etc. A few years back I started having panic/anxiety while driving & it would cause my vision to literally black out. I thought I had a tumor. I tend to think the worse. After seeing a neurologist, I was told that I have cluster migraines & that I should find out the trigger. They suggested a prescription, which I refused but asked for anything holistic, they suggested a few things, which would also help with vertigo that I started having 1st. Years later I thought I was ok, just this Saturday I'm driving with the family in the car in traffic I seemed ok a little anxious, because I didn't want to drive in the first place, but told myself it's ok. The moment that traffic cleared I got this tunnel vision & I felt anxious & a panic attack coming in. I still don't understand what's generating all this. I managed to get through it through breath work, but let me say it really takes a toll on the body going through those emotions. I had two of them & managed to not fully explode. Any suggestions on what this might be?

I had the exact same symptoms, and in my case they were panic attacks. Your brain is perceiving driving as a threat to your safety, and it does what brains do, try and protect you by flooding your system with stress chemistry you can fight or flee. Tunnel vision literally tunes out everything but what's ahead of you, because that's deemed unnecessary to your short term survival. If you were actually in danger, you'd burn off these chemicals through physical action. Sitting in a car, they simply wash over you, causing a slew of unpleasant sensations. When this happens enough times, your brain creates a shortcut, priming you to fight or flee when the same circumstances that "threatened" you before. It's a cycle that can be broken. It has been for me.

@@cch9704 It's different for everyone because the root cause is different. In my case a combination of meditation, therapy, and some time on medication worked for me.

This episode really hit on points I greatly enjoyed. So direct which is lacking in this passive aggressive world. "If I just get" approach always leads to disappointment. "What is your relationship with the milestone goal your'e setting" is something new to apply to my pursuits. Thank you for this episode.

i have ocd but its not like that its more like becoming obsessed with things to the point of being overwhelmed and not being able to do anything, seems like whatever i think about i just feel sick, its when im not thinking that i have peace, weed helps alot but its also probably what caused it for me in the first place because i abused it from very young

I found forgiving people who had hurt me while working the 12 steps tremendously relieved my intrusive thoughts. It was a lived practice of "I have survived this. It does not run my life. I chose to move forward and forgive. I am no longer arranging my life to avoid this stimuli"

look at us poor animals trying to deal with this arficial way of life, burn out is inevitable for some of us, gorilla life is the way, living in the moment, all this over thinking and materialistic things in our life.. even if you only had 1 thing.. say you have a tshirt, you have to wash it every day and dry it.. that takes time.. and its just 1 thing.. look at how we live.. im so over it all just not interested,

My suggestion Brad..from the sound of your voice, your forehead is chuck full of congestion..be it dairy related, potato chip junkie, & or years if being allergic to gluten .
