Freshman year of college I took a carry on full of food back to school after thanksgiving 😂 banana pudding, frozen gravy, stuffing, turkey, and frozen slices of cheese cake. Got stopped for extra screening and the agents got a good laugh but not one thing had to be tossed.

I got pulled over for a very small gifted Swiss army knife. I had to toss it. Strange thing is though this was my return flight, it didn't get flagged on the flight over.

Braids will usually flag the scanner. The worst was coming back from Rome, the officer at FCO forced me to take off my glasses (semi-rimless wireframe) because they were making the metal detector go off - he didn't even ask if I could see without them! If that had happened in the U.S., that would have been grounds for a federal civil rights lawsuit.

About mistake #6, they are paid for keeping it secure and explaning the rules, even when it is the1000 times they have to explain it that day.

My partner had his expensive camera and it's bag in one bin and along with our other stuff had gone through screening with no problem. Next thing we know two screeners said the camera and the bag had to be rescreened. We put the open bag and the camera in one bin again and put it to go through the scanner again. The bag came through the scanner all zipped up so, we thought we had everything. We headed a few steps for the little tram to take us to the departure gates but, luckily, my partner unzipped the camera bag and saw no camera. He started yelling " where's my camera, where's my camera". The screener and another screener started saying loudly, "the camera is coming thru now, the camera is coming thru now". Meanwhile, other people's stuff had already come through the scanner. There was a female TSA person standing at the end of the moving belt who just started laughing. They were going to steal that camera. I guess they thought it was an easy mark with us being two senior people. This was at Orlando airport and if we had gotten on that tram before checking that bag, we would have been out of luck. So, yes, you have to check your stuff because everybody is not honest

I see it so often, just recently in the “new” LGA terminal where they separate you from your bag. I like to watch it go thru the camera, get screened and watch it come out. I think the good TSA agents would advocate for less opportunity to have things stolen.

So true. I usually fly out of Ontario airport in Southern California and my husband has had money and other things “disappear” in the X-ray machine. A very expensive lesson and he’s much more aware and careful now.

Seriously, worry about getting TSA angry. They need to learn to treat travelers with respect. Being disabled I get mistreated 7 out of 10 times. I even had a TSA agent ask me to remove my prosthetic leg. My last trip I even had TSA say the F word to me and my family to keep pushing the luggage through the scanner. I had to inform the agent to actually turn the conveyor on. They will get my respect when they earn it. As for making them angry…. Not my concern.

Sorry that you are getting mistreated. My husband is disabled and he has to use the wheelchair to travel with but he always wears a suit and a tie, and he gets treated really nicely, actually he gets treated better than me and he is African American and 72

I agree with you I am a service-connected ptsd I am ambulatory however, I think sometimes just being a woman they always pat me down. I have tsa pre check clear and yet they still want me to go through the pat down check everything in my pocketbook that I've got to check to see if my stuff is still there cause I put my medicine and whatever jewelry I have in my pocketbook, so I don't trust him either.

I am a 69 yo female with two artificial hips. If what the TSA agents do to me during my additional screening were done to me anywhere but a TSA screening location it would be a sexual assault. Several times I have had panic attacks during the pat downs. Usually I am in tears by the end of the process. Due to the TSA screening process, flying is not a pleasant experience for me. I was flying to Dallas once and the female TSA agent confiscated an expense bottle of perfume from a well dressed lady. She put it on top of the trash bin and rudely told the owner it was over size. It wasn’t. The woman pointed out that the bottle was within the requirements clearly labeled on the package. The TSA agent glared at her and told that if she said it’s too big, then it’s too big. The woman shrugged and moved on. As soon as she was past the TSA area, the agent plucked the perfume from the trash and put it in her pocket. She laughed and said “That’s how you get nice stuff off rich white bitches.” I caught up with the woman and offered to be her witness if she wanted to file a complaint. She said there was no point. She flew frequently and making enemies with the TSA agent would be more trouble than losing the perfume. One more reason to hate flying.

TSA are the terr0rists and thieves. That's why I don't fly. The gate agents at United are thugs and steal from you by not allowing your small carry on saying it's too big, as much bigger ones are being dragged by you. Of course, your confiscated carry on gets "lost." Now, if I can't drive or get there by train, I don't go. I'm a 4'11" granny so I'm an easy mark, I guess, but having thieves in complete charge of your life is not my idea of fun.

What causes my blood pressure to go up is; when my purse, suitcase, whatever else I have to put on that conveyor belt, all of it containing money, medicine, jewelry, cell phone. Passport, other important papers, and other Tech equipment, but I'm held up. So anybody can steal anything of mine, because nobody's really watching what items belong to what person.

2 years ago I had a broken foot. Went through TSA in an airport wheelchair. The agent insisted that I remove my cast or I could not go through!!!!! REMOVE MY CAST. I was stunned. I asked her how exactly I could do that as I did not have a CAST SAW with me. Finally after several conversations with different agents a supervisor came and wanded me and let me through. 😂😂😂

Ugh, I swear the common sense of some people!! I think this is the whole reason they developed the TSA Cares program for people who have special challenges going through regular security from pregnancy to broken limbs to dementia. I'm glad it all worked out in the end though 😊

I had my carry on luggage stolen in a security line while in a foreign country. Fortunately my luggage had a special marker on it and one of the workers went and looked through various gates hoping to find the same marker/type of cloth attached to the carry on. He finally found the carry on, but the person insisted the carry on was his. We then had to go and get a police officer involved and all of sudden the thief's attitude became apologetic. He all of a sudden claimed as an excuse that he had a carry on just like ours. My name was also on the carry on so I don't buy his excuse. Anyway, it took a while to do all this and our flight was was starting to board, but if I had more time I really wanted to press charges.

So glad it worked out and you were able to get your bag back!! One of the tips I've been giving is to take a picture of your checked bag before you leave on your trip, but maybe its a good idea to have a picture of all your bags just in case something like this happens!! Thank you for sharing 😊

that's probably why he was bold enough to grab it it the first place, because he knew that even if he was stopped charges would NOT be pressed. He thought that he was homefree at first, by saying it was his bag, just because they are so hard to actually identify and if you didn't have enough time to go thru the search, they would be gone and maybe scored or maybe not, depending on the contents.

I've had things stolen from my luggage side pockets. Luckily only things like dirty sandals and wet bathing suits. I no longer use suitcases with side pockets but it's terrible that theft by airline employees is so rampant. They can take anything they want these days but my old shoes? That's pretty pathetic.

Thanks for your travel tips, but here is what happens to me. I am a VietNam vet w/a service-connected disability. I have a permanent ostomy and must wear an appliance. I also must wear suspenders, as a belt places too much pressure on my surgery site. Even though I am TSA pre-checked, I am always searched, questioned, my carry-on baggage is thoroughly searched, and my meds questioned. This is in spite the fact that TSA middle-managers attend national ostomy conventions & pledge to inform & to train frontline TSA agents on the needs faced by ostomy patients. I have never been subjected to such treatment in France, Mexico, Chile nor Australia. One time @LAX, a so-called TSA agent took away my ticket and passport. I snatched them back out of his hand. He got red in the face & called for a “supervisor.” I identified myself and asked him whether he had served in the military. When he hesitated, I started laughing and stated, “You were dismissed on request.” The loser couldn’t stand basic training & quit. The candy-ass just got redder in the face. He wanted to know what an ostomy was. I told him, “Learn your job.” He walked away. The supervisor, another agent and I spent a few minutes in a private search room for a pat-down. Neither knew what an ostomy was…Yes, TSA is security theater. Next time this happens, I will be the one calling for a supervisor! Also, you have the right to demand the agent uses new gloves to rummage through your baggage….In July 2022, a woman shot up the Dallas airport, before the alleged security line. In the Air Force, the security police conducts security checks at the entrances, not right next to the B-52s! At CDG (& at the Eiffel Tower), the French security personnel are all fit & all carry pistols. Other agents patrol with 5.56 FAMAS! That is a real show of force. By contrast, our TSA are unarmed, overweight, or too old. They violate the 4th amendment as they wait for their next paycheck…As I passed by on my way to my gate, the quitter glared at me. I made the two-finger signal from my eyes toward him. I am watching you. Another time @ PHL, I was threatened with a strip search. I replied with glee, “Go for it.” The agent was visibly taken back, based on his involuntary reaction. At age 70, and after 6 surgeries, I don’t care who sees my body. Next time that I am insulted, I am going to get naked right there by the body scanner. Then, the TSA agents will also have to determine whether my ostomy bag contains 3 ounces or more of poop. I am a Yellow Dog democrat, but I believe some conservative concerns over excessive government oversight are correct. The flying public is looked upon with suspicion and processed like cattle, all in the name of state security.

I have had a lot of problems with medical issues and TSA. I, too have an ostomy and there is one incident that really stands out : the agent patted me down very roughly (I am blind, in a wheelchair, had a pain pump, a a port under my collarbone) and caused a lot of pain. When she got to my ostomy it was partially full. She asked what it was and I told her it was an ostomy. I tried to explain it in terms that were polite. I started with "waste container", then tried "bodily waste", moved on to "fecal matter" and finally ended up shrieking "it is a sh*t bag". She said that I didn't have to be so loud and I embarrassed her. She said that she had to know what was in the bag and couldn't just take my word for what was in it. I rolled down the top of my skirt enough to expose the bag, she wasn't satisfied and insisted on seeing what was in it so I smiled and opened the bottom - she yelled at me for doing something so disgusting. I replied that she was lucky I didn't accidentally spill it out on her. She then told me to stand up um...my chair was not for looks -I can't stand up. She sighed loudly and told me she would have to call her supervisor because I was uncooperative. My husband was getting really angry watching from the "regular" side; the other passengers were also calling out that my treatment was uncalled for. Finally, they took my telescoping blind while cane and literally took it apart. She handed me my broken cane and told me to hurry up and leave because "I" was holding up the line. Her supervisor told me that it was my own fault that they caused me physical pain, embarrassment and the breaking of my blind stick. I reported the incident and was told that I must have misunderstood the agent and supervisor, but I could try to get my broken blind stick paid for. After a couple of months I recieved notice that I requested too much money for the broken stick (it was around $70). I never heard back on anything I had reported.

TSA has a program for disabled and special needs passengers. Contact them three days before your flight and a passenger care advocate will be assigned to get you through security without fuss. They will also coordinate with your airline. The program is not well publicized.

I am a retired TSA agent and most of what you said was great. Yes the water can't go through however Ice can because it is in a solid form. Roll on type or cream deodorants must be in the 1 quart bag however a stick type product does not again it is a solid. You are correct about hearing what is said and be aware as to what is going on around you. This was a great video.

I bring multiple ice packs with me every time I fly because I have a medical condition that requires them to manage my pain when flying. I have had zero issues in America, but occasionally I get a hard time with some Canadian agents. Fortunately, I have since gotten a letter from CATSA, indicating my right to bring ice packs for medical reasons and then I'm usually fine. Prior to letter, I was once forced to send the ice packs through my checked luggage and the airline was kind enough to offer me bags of ice throughout the flight.

About 2 years ago I was flying from Cincinnati to Tampa. I don't know which happened first but myself and the passenger either directly behind or directly in front of me in TSA line had almost identical looking laptops. We grabbed each others laptop after security and didn't realized it until we got to our destinations. Luckily his laptop was for business and gave the name of the company when it was powered on and I was able to call the company and we were able to link up. He flew to Orlando and since I was in Tampa I drove to Orlando the next day to swap laptops. I've now put a larger sticker on my laptop so it is instantly recognizable.

Speaking of theft in the TSA line. Two TSA agents were caught stealing from passengers while they went through the line. They are arrested and fired. This happened at MIA about a month ago.

My wife and I always travel together, someone will go through security earlier than the other so so they can keep an eye on the other stuff coming through later. Also if you have TSA pre-check you don't have to takeoff your shoes are you don't have to take your liquids out. That is a great time saver

Don't count on it. I am an elderly lady and I have TSA Pre-check and have had to do everything I used to have to do before I had pre-check and every time that I have flown with pre-check. Guess the very nice agents did not have much else to do. As usual, though, I was prepared and shoes, liquids, belt, etc., had to be displayed/removed just as before I had pre-check. Since I was the only one in line, it did not delay me much at all, but, still....

I've had the same experience as a 75 yr. old travelor! And I have mobility issues so I use a wheelchair. It's difficult for me to walk thru their scanners and have to put my arms above my head. I've had four major back surgeries with metal screws and rods implantef . Even when I tell them about it, they insist on doing a body scan after going through the scanner!! I've just come to expect it but it is frustrating. I must somehow look like a sinister old lady!

I have a knee replacement and I have trouble every time I go through security. I put everything that needs to be xrayed on the conveyor belt (which is everything you own - your wallet, passport, cell phone , ipad, jacket - just everything!). When I go through the scanner, every single time I get pulled aside because the the knee appliance.. I even have a laminated card with an X-ray of my knee with the replacement, signed and dated by the physician. They don’t even want to look at it. Half the time I just get a pat down, but sometimes they make me go down to the end to another scanner and then get pat down. All this while I’m trying to keep an eye on my stuff which by now is through the X-ray and is piling up down at the end of the conveyer belt. When my husband is with me it’s not a problem (just a pain in the neck) because he can take care of my stuff until I get there. But if I am by myself it is a real worry because I can’t keep an eye on my possessions. So, yes, I do worry about items being stolen. Wish they would be more sensitive about this issue. I can’t be two places at once. You say they are not there to prevent theft but they are preventing me from preventing theft of my belongings. It doesn’t seem fair.

I always put my loose change and other pocket things in a ziplock sandwich bag, then put in the front pocket of my backpack. Much easier to reload my pockets after clearing TSA. One time I was picking up a person with special needs so I got a gate pass to meet them. I forgot I had a personal size mace in my jacket pocket. I realized it as I was going through TSA so I immediately gave it to the agent. I was much surprised when I left: the TSA agent gave it back to me!

We've had really good luck with TSA agents. We were flying from Portland to San francisco. My husband bought a jar pickles at the farmers market in Portland and tried to get through tsa. He just pulled out the jar and put it onto the table. The TSA agent left. He said I'm not taking your pickles! You've got to have those! And off we went.

I travel a couple times a year and I consider myself a pretty well prepared traveler, but your point about checking the bins is well taken. I once left my drivers license in a bin on a domestic flight. Ouch! Frantic! My daughter once left her laptop in a bin as well. Both times we were able to retrieve the items, but wow! so stressful!!!

Had a TSA agent in Oakland steal $60 from my purse, which was in a duffle bag. She was rummaging around in the duffle for so long, that I asked her if there was a problem. She wore long sleeves and so was able to hide the money very easily. Didn’t realize it was gone until I got to LA. Always put cash in a small pouch, wallet or purse that you place in the bins with your liquids, etc.

I keep my cash on my body. Goes right through the scanner. If you want to see it, you'll be taking it out in my full view. I've been lucky as I've always been treated well and never had items stolen, but I know there are plenty of bad actors out there preying on people.

Great idea about the order in which to put things on the TSA conveyor belt. It’s hard to keep an eye on your things when you’re preoccupied with stepping into the scanner, getting wanded, or patted down! Putting a locked carryon through first and the essentials like tech, etc., to go through last is a genius idea! Appreciate your videos!

I have always done the same order you mention, except maybe I put my shoes first. My thought us that gives me timeto put on my shoes before my luggage comes through. Putting my luggage before my technology or liquids also gives me a place to put my tablet and liquids in once they come through.

Two times that I've gotten called aside: 1). I was bringing gifts from Las Vegas for my babysitter. The way I had packed the candlesticks & other items looked suspicious 2). I'd gone "back home" with a stop at my favorite spice store & bought 1 lb of salt & a large bag of assorted herbs. Guess what they looked like I the scanner! Lol

If you know that you can't go through the main scanner, I have knee replacements, when you check in and before you get on line for the scanner ask where you should go. It's easier on both you and the TSA and you'll go through quicker.

Great tips, thank you. Especially listening to the agents, and that situations vary. My last trip I took, they were upgrading the screening area of our airport. One lane you had to remove all electronics and liquids and put them in the Grey bins. The next line over, they told us NOT to remove our electronics and liquids. Apparently with the new scanners, it is not necessary. It helped the 2nd line move more swiftly. So yes, paying attention is very important.

Different Agents have different interpretations of TSA rules, especially for items like knitting needles and tiny scissors/snips.

TSA does not make me feel any safer in the air. I know someone arrested by TSA because the agent patted their crotch and the woman sputtered because she was so SHOCKED! The agent said she was spit on. The woman wasn't even arrested until she got back home! The charges were eventually dropped. I just came home from SAT to IAD and I had a similar moment to yours. I was bringing home cans of soup that I can only get in San Antonio. The TSA agent had to pick-up each can, shake it and put it back down, finally saying I could either throw them out or check the bag. He didn't have to go through the dramatics of each can once he saw what they were and could have sent back to luggage check-in right away. I'm glad I gave myself time at the airport!

My TSA “regret story” is when I left security during a layover so I bought a bottle of Coke to drink. Forgetfully, I stuck it in my carry on bag and went through security again totally innocent (same with a large bottle of hand sanitizer). I’m legally blind and use a cane and totally spaced out when it came to carrying a full size bottle of soda worrying about making it back through security rather than what was in my carry on. WOW! I was pulled out of line, made to wait, no explanation, no talking. Being blind, I was confused as to just what I had done! Just like you said, once your bags go through the scanner I can’t see any theft going on even when I’m accompanied by a employee escorting me so the Soda was the LEAST of my worries. Another great reason to have assistance for the disabled. Anyway, after standing there pulled out of line for over 15 minutes, I was grilled mercilessly about the soda, it was tested, my hands were tested and you’d think me, the blind woman, had brought God knows what, through security. I got a huge taking to. It was an honest mistake but it was an embarrassing lesson. Only ONCE my hand sanitizer in more than 3.4 ounces, was even cared about. TSA is so different from airport to airport. My last trip, instead of going through the body scanner but taken in a wheelchair around the scanner, left in the wheelchair and no pat down but just asked to move side to side in the wheelchair without any scanning over my hands or wheel . I can walk without issue but it’s easier for airport personnel to push me in a wheelchair rather than walk slower than other people. Plus I cannot see notices of gate changes or find my gate and read the signs knowing I’m at the correct gate. What seems strange to me is there is no set procedure, blind or otherwise, going through security. Each time I fly which is every 3 months or more, it’s different. I leave from my hometown which is a HUGE airport and my destination is a much smaller hub. I find the smaller airports do more security checks than the large one I depart from. I’d say my hometown airport is the #5 biggest airport in the US. I suggest if you are disabled, take advantage of the services offered such as a wheelchair or an assistant to assist you to your gate. That way you are assured you arrive at your destination and not say, Dulles rather than DFW airport. ALWAYS tip personnel that assist you through the airport. They make their money from tips just like any service personnel that deliver your pizza for example. Just remember every airports TSA division does it differently and we need to be prepared for the odd requests which usually have their own meaning and reason for it. Happy Travels! ✈️

Three days before you travel, go to TSA's website and notify them of your "disability" and special needs. A passenger care advocate will be assigned to get you through security without a fuss. They will also help coordinate with your airline. The program isn't well advertised.

@@GenxGypsy1968 that’s a great program. I fly SW airlines who has been GREAT in assisting me being blind through security and through to my gate. All I do is check-in at the counter and they get a service person to escort me through in a W/C from check-in to my gate. Easy peasy and I always tip my attendant when they “deliver” me to my gate. They always seem to have a CS rep at my destination to get me from my gate in the jetway to baggage claim as well. I don’t know about anyone else, but SW airlines has been wonderful in providing me with assistance as soon as I walk up to the check-in with my cane but I will certainly “look” into the TSA Cares Program. absolutely! where I work the people who help disabled people are trained for people who need a wheelchair, blind, deaf and autistic people. It's really small so if someone doesn't need a wheelchair they usually won't get one but they will be accompanied to the gate or even further depending on their necessity. Lots of older people use it for fear of getting lost even if the can walk. And lots of people who could walk use it without a wheelchair if they have issues walking long distances in case the gate gets changed. the people on wheelchairs always get a patdown but there is someone with everyone making sure they put everything in the bins through security and that all the procedures are followed and that they get on the plane in time. What you did is indeed how this kind of service is meant to be used and I do invite you to use it.

I have had a great TSA experience when I left my bag at TSA. I returned back to TSA and they had my bag waiting for me to claim it. 2016, on our way to the airport, I inserted in my memory card in my camera.I remember putting it inside the camera and closing the camera door. Later that night, when I arrived home. I went to remove the memory card and download our vacation photos. The memory card was GONE. So, double Ck everything to make sure you got everything in carry in backs before you leave.

Lyon, France. All people waiting to be screened were told to put cameras, tablets, cell phones and laptops in a gray bins. I placed my bin in the conveyor and went through the personal screening without a problem. Six of us were asked to step aside for about two minutes. By the time we were told to go ahead my new cell phone was gone. The French screener just shrugged. Language was not the problem, because I speak French. I think the screeners were involved in the theft. Why make six of us step aside and wait after all of us had been cleared?

Great video! Years ago I was at Ft. Lauderdale and even tho I had pre-check I was selected for random pat down. Fine. I took everything out except my wallet, as it had large sum of cash & credit cards, and I was uncomfortable handing it to any tsa agent. To me, it was a crime of opportunity to trust whoever took my wallet. As you said, they’re not responsible for any theft. Got a major attitude from the agent about it, but I knew not to say what I was thinking, as he has (way too much) power to make me miss my flight. (Another issue for later) Anyway, I filed a complaint to TSA, saying that whoever is reading this wouldn’t allow some stranger to take possession of their wallet either, TSA or not. They apologized, said they would look into it, but said next time to put my wallet in my carry-on & keep an eye on it as it passes thru the machine, which is what I do now. A lot less stress for me!

Many years ago when TSA started, I got pulled over for a extra scan / pat down. My college age daughter was with me, and asked if I might know why I was pulled out of line. I calmly said to her “ My plastic surgeon made my breasts too big so he put a metal plate under them to hold them up” (I didn’t have surgery I’m naturally large) I thought the agent was going to pee her pants she was laughing so hard. It was the underwire in my bra. Back then you could joke about such stuff.

I finally said it could be my underwire bra? pointed to my boobs, she scanned me, Yes it was….. she was so apologetic. I looked at her very boyish flat chest and realised why it didn’t dawn her. My mother was going through security and her bag made it through before she did... The bag with the passports money and tickets!!... They actually saw the person grab the bag. And watched her as she ran away. They were shouting and yelling and pointing at the individual. This person made it all the way onto a flight.... Followed by security... Last week in Orlando there was an agent walking up and down the line screaming about making sure you take your laptop out of your bag. So I frantically get my laptop out. I put it in a bin with my bookbag and the agent assisting my line yelled in my face "next time leave your laptop in the bag. In my line everything stays in the bag." I've flown all over the world and the one time I was pulled out of line for a pat down was when I had a bag of ground coffee in my carry on bag. It was a new bag, never opened. All of the contents of my carry on were removed and placed all over a table and examined by one agent while a female did the pat down. The coffee bag was x-rayed and it was then that I learned that drug dealers will sometimes hide their drugs in ground coffee. After a heart pounding 20 min. of this I was finally told to put my bag back together and go. I've never repacked a bag so fast in my life! I ran to my gate with my heart pounding (I'm a rule follower, too!)

Chicago 1985. I was 23. My purse contained a beautiful, heavy gold necklace, but the purse didn't zip. They didn't use bins yet so I laid my jacket and purse on the conveyor belt to be scanned. When I retrieved my items from the x-ray scanner and took a dozen steps away I realized the necklace was gone. I turned around to ask, and the security agent at the screen said, "There was no chain left in the scanner." I had not asked the question yet so clearly it was. I was crushed. Years later my mother told me she thought maybe I pawned it since she never saw me wear the gift again.

I have had both knees replaced. I always tell the TSA agent but they make me go through the scanner anyway. When the scanner goes off they pull me aside to the body X-ray or they wand me. While all this is happening my belongings are at the end of the conveyer waiting on me. I am terrified that someone will grab my bag with all my id and money in it. The TSA line is the most stressful part of traveling for me.

Why are you even going through the scanner? I just point to my knee and they motion me around the scanner. If they want me through it, when I could walk, they know I’m going to set it off! The larger body scans are supposed to get around the problem but then you need to be able to stand with your hands up pretty high. I did have a Canadian security not listen and force me to walk through the scanner. My metal cane, metal knee, and metal shoulder set off the detected …. Duh! She wanted me to go back through and I just kept telling her no that nothing was going to change and it was pointless. Eventually a supervisor helped her with her other options geez!

TSA Line... Security Expert Commentary: Shoes are the first item I put through so they are ready for you immediately which can speed up the process for everyone. I also put everything in my bag in sectional zip lock bags. Things like small electronics, USB sticks all should be bagged as it’s so easy to loose small items. I also have plenty of zip lock bags. I have a 10 x 8” bag for trash I stick in the seat pouch I use during each flight and toss at the end. I pack extras in a Fannie pack. I carry a 10 x 6” bankers locked bag for valuables and impossible to replace medicines. This also is used in room safes to keep from pilfering by surreptitious thief’s who may have room and safe bypass keys. I also use TILE radio frequency tags and attach them to keys, the bankers bag, each piece of luggage (put it at the top of the bag so it’s more likely to operate in open air). Test each Tile and replace batteries yearly before the trip. I use peel and stick Velcro to hold Tiles in place and it also hold them in hidden corners, etc. Carry two ATM cards and credit cards from different banks separated with some emergency cash. Don’t hide money in the room because people often forget it in a rush for a flight. I carry three credit cards. One on my person, one in the room safe in a bankers bag and one inside my largest lockable carry on. If you are a subject of theft, you have total painless redundancy. I do carry a cable lock for my lap top. Hopefully there is something to lock it around, even if it’s a chair. Always have a log on password to all devices. I choose to have all medicines listed with dosage per person on the trip on my cell phone under the Contact’s under the persons name I.E. Joe Smith MEDS so it’s available immediately in an emergency. I carry day meds in a tiny zip lock bag so if they get lost, it’s only a day or so worth of meds. Leave the prescription bottles secured in the room but take photos of the labels on your phone. In a small zip lock I carry 6 sterile wipes and two sizes of band aids and two paper towels and exam gloves if you get cut out and about. Are you happy you read this?

Thank you for your excellent advice. I take international flights 3 or 4 times a year and still get nervous going through security. I agree with you about it being annoying when people don't move their crates to the collection point it slows everything up. If I may, I would add one more piece of advice to your subscribers; always wear footwear that you can easily remove and put back on. I once witnessed a girl wearing tightly laced up boots that took her ages to get off and longer to put back on.

Have luggage tags on your carryon and personal item. I I was on the first leg of my trip to Italy in 2019. I spaced out and left my carryon at security. Luckily I heard them page my name five minutes later because they were able to just read the luggage tag.

Years ago, my sister and brother were flying down to North Carolina from Phila and were taking our elderly dad along. They went through security line with no problems but our dad was stopped. He kept getting beeped and ended up taking him into a room, to check him, the security women was actually quite nice to him. She finally asked him if he had candy and sure enough, he had a candy bar and thats what made it beeped. She told my sister, that this happens with most elderly people, they carry candy bars and the wrapping sets it off. Lesson learned.

I do the same bin order you recommend for the same reasons. TSA agents often intersperse other people’s stuff with each other’s because the could care less. So if I’m in an airport where bins “auto lunch”:onto the conveyor belt, I stack my bins on top of each other and push them in one after the other to try to ensure they stay together. There are some really nice TSA folks out there, and I’m sure having folks do stupid things all day (I’ve forgotten bottles of water multiple time 🙄) and that must get old. But I’ve had some that seem to need to prove they’re the boss of you and treat you really poorly. I try to remember that it’s likely this is the only control in their lives and they must be pretty reasonable. I stay nice as much as possible.

If more then one person in a group, send a person through security before you send the bins through the X-ray scanner. That way someone in your group is waiting when your bins come out of the X-ray. Also count the number of bins if there is more than one or two so on the other side of X-ray count bins again so you do not forget stuff behind in a bin. If more than one bin and travelling alone send the bin with your valuables last so its exposed for less time to other people on the other side of the X-ray

To add to Mistake #2, I was escorting a patient from the US through London Heathrow. We were in a long line due to multiple larger body aircrafts arriving. I was handed a nice see-through bag with a Zip-Loc type closing system. I put in all the Liquids that I had in my backpack style carry on, but I neglected the eyeglasses lens whips. Oh my God! What a mistake, even though technically they are not liquid, but they are moist, and I was made to wait for 2+ hours while they attended to locate that liquid that was detected by the machine! My patient was getting agitated due to the wait, and I felt like a complete idiot! On my return flight, I removed all including the lens whips and I sailed through security check like the wind. So the point is, you have no idea how the machine is calibrated or if at all, so be smart to save yourself!

Great tips, thank you! One week ago I flew out of Ontario, California airport. The TSA agent who directed us as to what to put in bins and how was standing AT the conveyor belt. As you said, procedure changes frequently, so not having any advanced direction did slow down the line. If she had been louder or signs had been present in the line, much frustration would have been avoided. And yes, I realized this was not her fault and of course rolled with it. I keep any smaller electronics in one of the side pockets of my backpack and if I'm traveling with pins to trade, those go in a place they won't obstruct things. I feel like part of packing for TSA is also recognizing that even if you don't need to pull it out, having items that can obstruct get in the way could be an issue. Of course, technology could make this point moot depending on the airport and machines, but that's another way I try to think ahead.

My tablet and phone were stolen went I went through security in the most chaotic airport of Toronto. I was in a wheelchair and carrying my little dog, couldn't possibly keep an eye on everything.

I agree that TSA is not there to prevent theft. But I've also heard about instances where they've (TSA) been the ones committing said theft.

I was going through the TSA PreCheck line in my home city (security here is usually easier than in Dallas.) In my computer bag was a Mont Blanc pen. I had taken the computer out as they wanted. I had to go through the scanner. I get through and go to collect my stuff. My computer bag was missing. It turns out that they thought my Mont Blanc Pen was a small tactical weapon. For a brief moment, I thought they were going to confiscate it. I was going to have a problem with that as it was expensive. They finally figured out that it was a writing pen and let me keep it. To me it would be nice if TSA would consistently enforce their policies. Most of the time Security is easy, as long as I am calm and not nervous about it. Most agents are relaxed and are not extremely picky, but occasionally I encounter a NAZI. They want to enforce everything.

I usually travel with a bum bag and small rucksack. I clip the bum bag tp the rucksack and put in 1 bin. Shoes are hit and miss. My rucksack always gets pulled for some reason.

I have pre check so security takes about 15 minutes top from stepping in like to getting on the other side. That said the top 2 things that I get stopped for is winter boots (with metal) and braids in my hair. I use to take the train to the airport in winter so would wear boots and they would set off the alarms. Now I Uber so I don’t have to worry about commuting in the cold. I normally put two braids in my hair as my airport look but I almost always end up with a 30 second hair pat down (especially for the full body scan machines). Not sure if it’s just the braids or the fact that I have extensions as well. But I’ve learned to braid my hair after security and just leave it down for the scans.

Yep, that metal will get you every time!! I have a pair of riding boots that make some scanners go off too 🙄. Love, love, love having Pre Check!

It's the braids themselves, though the extensions might just be adding to it - when the officer told me 7 years ago that braids will usually flag the scanner, I quit braiding my hair for flying, and wore it in a ponytail after that. I've never flagged the scanner since.

Seems we have redefined staying safe as to not include not getting robbed. TSA had better be including not enabling thieves in their mission! Also, shoes, after walking through an airport and it's bathrooms, are disgusting. I try to bring a trash bag. They may "disinfect" those bins but not after each use.

Im made the mistake of putting an MP3 player I loaded with music for my brother in my checked bag. The entire bag went missing and was never found. They asked if there were any electronics in the bag and they said thats probly why it was snatched. There had been a sting done at Las Vegas airport and found that TSA was scanning the bags and having friends outside come pick up the ones with valuables. That came from a Delta employee at the airport. D-e-l-t-a does stand for Dont Expect Luggage To Arrive so theres that !! lol !!

I worked at a TSA checkpoint for over four years. I don't recall any passenger actually having anything stolen. A couple of times, someone thought something was missing, but it either hadn't exited the x-ray machine yet or they had left it in a grey bin.

One of my TSA co-workers specialized in stealing cash. He had a very clever method, but they caught him eventually. They estimated he got away with about $20k over time. And he was a nice guy and well liked, so go figure.

At Flagstaff, TSA confiscated my 3.4oz tube of toothpaste, but not my cigarette lighter that was right beside of it in the bin. Toothpaste is more of a threat than a lighter? TSA rules make absolutely no sense. That is why I take Amtrak

Ive never had issues with TSA. My home base is Vegas, and I'm lucky to say they are proficient and professional. Know the rules, be polite and you'll be ok. This video's suggestions are solid.

I bring a water bottle, but never fill it until I am finished at security. I also leave the lid off and usually have it on one side of my backpack, and the bottle portion on the other. It ensures that it's empty, and that I won't get stopped. A friend of mine who is a retired teacher always says before heading up to security to "turn your listening ears on". Sometimes, we are so in a rush to get where we need to be, we stop paying attention. I have never had a theft issue, and most of the time I come through pretty easily. The 2 places to follow the rules are TSA and the post office. If you do what they ask you without question, you will get where you need to be with everything you brought with you. The post office is the same. When you address a letter or package in the manner they ask, it usually arrives where it needs to go. Doesn't take much to do what they ask.
