Born and raised in nwa (fayetteville) and have moved away twice only to miss the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks. Its something about the hills that make nwa special. I understand the appeal and that with walmart and the u of a, growth is inevitable. But the gentrification of Southern Fayetteville breaks my heart bc thats where i grew up. Alot of my childhood memories of certain homes or locations have been demolished and rebuilt with modern, outrageously priced flats. It historically, was the blue collar folks that lived down there. There used to be bars and spots where the community gathered that are just a memory now to only those that were around then. There is one man that everyone with historical ties to fayetteville know. Sherman Morgan...he owned a watering hole with an old jukebox in the holler (south of the old courthouse). But Sherman was fayetteville. If the developers of the area would dig deeper into the areas they are developing and somehow honor the past. Instead slapping a trendy name on a building disrespects the souls that built the town and made fayetteville, what it is today! #keepfayettvillefunky

But for those countri folks like me and my wife, life was good.We did our hunting in the bottomlands and our camping/exploring in the mountains (and fished in both). We usually camped in the Ouachita Mts. because they were far less commercialized. And it was always near water. The Cossatot, Little Missouri, Saline, and Ouachita Rivers mostly (the Cossatot was our favorite). Also, even though there are some nice State Parks, 90% of the time we went camping/fishing/hunting off the beaten trail. We have driven to a spot on the Cossatot and stayed for a week without seeing another person. As far as cities go, we basically avoided them (we do like Hot Springs area though). We never got into the biking thing (except on a motorcycle) but canoeing was a different story. There are many great canoeing rivers. But to each their own. I am just a small town country boy that grew up in a town of less than 800 and I would not trade my time in Arkansas for anything. He didn't mention the heat. Actually, northwest Arkansas has the coolest summers in the state, given that it's in the northern part of the state and has some altitude. High temperature today was 102, though, and it's expected to be 103 tomorrow and 100+ the rest of the week. That's a heat wave, but not an especially unusual one as 100 degree temperatures happen pretty much every year with 90's being common all summer long. The winters are usually mild, but can get cold and only about half the year is reliably frost free. As a gardener I find the local weather frustrating for growing cool season crops, as I can only count on a few weeks of frost-free moderate temperatures each spring and fall--there's just not much time between ice and fire like there would be in a coastal area.

Don’t forget Alice Walton killed someone In 1989, Alice was speeding in Fayetteville, Arkansas and hit a pedestrian. Oleta Harden, a 50 year old cannery worker died from her injuries. Alice was not cited or charged for the incident. In 1998, Alice totaled her SUV in Springdale, Arkansas when she hit a gas meter and a phone booth. She was charged with driving while intoxicated. Despite a blood alcohol level 6 points over the legal limit and her lawyers argued Alice was fatigued, Alice Walton was fined $925. Most recently, in October 2011, Alice Walton was pulled over by police and failed a sobriety test. When police discovered her expired registration, Alice told them she had someone who does that for her.

Arkansas resident since 2010. There are two Arkansas: East and West. West Arkansas is rolling hills, low mountains, and trees. East Arkansas is flat, level, and very high water tables. Cotton and rice rule. Downsides: - Humidity, especially annoying in summer. Autumn is awesome, but get used to things being wet; - Did I mention HOT? - Mosquitoes. A variety rise out of the grass at sunset to eat you alive. One could publish a mosquito-watching manual, as we have big ones, ones with spots, ones with stripes . . . - Fleas / ticks / chiggers, etc. Major issue for pets. In some areas fire ants and termites are major concerns. - Unless you live in Little Rock, shopping is an issue. You’re an hours’ drive from any stores. This means you need access to a small truck or trailer if your plans include Home Depot, and you’re going to love Amazon!; and, - Folks keep to themselves, with limited interactions outside of church and family. The level of education and abilities to reason are quite limited; folks are actually proud of their ignorance. Employers and landlords seem to think we still have a plantation economy. Wages, upward mobility, and economic opportunities are extremely limited, A real “bucket of crabs” mentality. On the plus side, - Housing prices - prices, not rents - are quite low; - Governmental reach (zoning, licensing, etc.) is a fraction of what’s found elsewhere; - A generally polite, friendly, tolerant ambience in public.

I’m concerned that that is happening to NW Arkansas right now- Bentonville in particular basically just needs a rolling population sign, it’s growing so quickly. I am from Benton (not Bentonville!), pop approx 40,000, in Saline County (with a population of around 100,000 total)- less than 20 minutes SW of Little Rock, in central Arkansas. The Benton/Bryant area-basically the I-30 corridor through Saline County-is also a really great area with a lot of growth, and both the Benton and Bryant school systems are fantastic (I know Benton typically places in the top 7% of public schools nationally, and I would expect the same from Bryant.) I am particularly pleased with the revival happening in old downtown Benton, my own neighborhood. (I grew up and still live in the same 1928 house my mother’s family moved into in 1944, about three blocks from the Saline County Courthouse. The houses in my neighborhood-you could pick them up and put them in the Heights/Hillcrest neighborhood in Little Rock-where they would fit in perfectly-and charge at least three times as much.) The downtown business district looks great, and is busy and booming-we’ve got several great restaurants, boutiques, etc. just in the little downtown area, and the surrounding residential area where I live has well-kept, beautiful older homes. And it was Benton-not Bentonville- that made money.com’s list last year of 50 best places to live (in the US.) It was the only town in Arkansas on the list, as well as the most affordable on the entire list.

The traffic is ridiculous so we said that’s it and we moved to an area that is much like Bentonville was 30 years ago. If you like a busier, more metro/trendy area then Bentonville is for you. A few years back they made panhandling ok. So the law doesn't have to mess with the ones with the hands out. Hard to tell who really needs help. But something that really gripes me is all the 'foreigners' moving here that seem to want to make our great state just like the places they moved to get away from. They move in next door knowing there are chickens and horses right next to them. And then they start complaining and causing friction with the people who were already there. Resulting in ordinances roosters and hens. Before long we will be like California!

Panhandling is when someone in public walks up to someone and verbally asks for money, that is illegal. However, holding a sign on the side of the road on public property is legal, it has been since forever. It's freedom of speech. Although walking around in public like parking lots etc may be freedom of speech but they are doing it on private property and that is what panhandling is.

An Arkansas Perspective: I'm a Democrat, not a fanatic on it, but still left of center. I'm the only person in my town of 700 to vote Blue. Yet I love my neighbors like family, and I know I can depend on them like family, no matter my views. We aren't defined by politics. And as a Native American, I havent been in a church since bubble gum came along. Nobody really cares. We all choose our own path, in the end. As a senior citizen, I get treated with respect everywhere. I've had 8 year olds hold the door of a business, before running to catch up with friends. And you'll notice folks smile a lot. Not those pasted on empty glamor smiles of the unhappy rich, but smiles that include the eyes, that are real. So if a couple of your neighbors are blocking both directions of traffic on a backroad while they talk, stop back far enough so they know you're not crowding them, and refresh your coffee from the thermos. They won't be long, and they'll know "you get it". And most importantly, don't judge a book by its cover. I know a fellow that could buy Mar-a-Lago, and he drives a 97 Ford Ranger, wears bib overalls, and drinks Busch Beer. We tend to just be ourselves, without all the window dressing of lies that passes for high society. Real Country & Real People!

The reason why I will never go to Arkansas is because I found at least one hospital that has these worst doctors and staff I have ever encountered They didn't realize that it was the medication that they had me on that was causing severe adverse effects, I guess they were too lazy to read the Black Box warning. These quacks did so many things Illegal I can't see how they got away with it. They didn't get proper consent for things they needed to get signed consent for. Like blood transfusion, sedating me against my will. And many more things. Instead, they called my employer to find someone in my family to do so, that didn't have the legal authority to make those decisions. Most people don't know that the patient who is an adult must legally give a family member or someone else the authority to make such decision. Or the hospital must ask the courts so they can make those decisions. Next is the attorneys that I had to deal with. Every Lawyer I spoke with wanted to charge me thousands of dollars just to look at the malpractice case against these doctors, nurses and the hospital Then there's the court Such a corrupt court system in Bentonville. And the police would not even allow me to charge these doctors and the hospital with the crimes they committed. And I had every right to file those charges. I guess Arkansas likes to protect their own criminals.

Hello, you just mentioned the reasons why I will like to move to Arkansas
@muffs55mercury61 Жыл бұрын
I lived in northwest, AR in Rogers for a long time but when it came time to buy a house I left as the whole area is becoming another California with it's unchecked growth, With so many transplants there's a lot of the take-it-or-leave-it unfriendly attitudes. So I'm now in a little town 125 miles away from that area. Live and let live, great people, inexpensive property taxes. Best thing I did was leave overcrowded Arizona in 1990 and move to Arkansas, Avoid Little Rock as it is loaded with gang activity and the crime there is thru the roof. Also the general area is the most tornado prone in the state.
@georgiayoung9124 Жыл бұрын
Ok my Friend & I planning to move to AR & real estate company keeps directing us to Little Rock. Interesting comment about gang activity. We're moving from PHX & don't want to go bad to worse. But cost of living in PHX alone is reason enough...
@muffs55mercury61 Жыл бұрын
@@georgiayoung9124 Whatever your decision is, good luck and may the best happen. It's natural for sources such as realtors to direct one to a city as that's the only way of life they know. I get all of what I need in a small town of 9000 which is about 12 miles or 15 minutes (no stoplights) away. I'm here to stay.

I moved to NE AR in 2019, to be near my elderly mother. I was born, lived and worked in STL all my life. My dad was from NE AR and wanted to retire here, so my mom went along with it. I miss my choices of grocery stores - that is probably the major downside. Although I am related to a lot of people here, I do feel like an outsider looking in. But that is ok, I do love how everyone is close knit and neighborly. People don't know how to use their blinkers here, and that is a pet peeve - a lot of highway accidents/fatalities. Even when using my blinker - I can't tell you how many times the truck behind me has almost hit me, ughhh.

Northwest Arkansas is a different world than most of the rest of the state. Lot of money in that corner due to Walmart and The Waltons. There's culture, arts and it's beautiful.

I am trying to understand the additional “property taxes” on vehicles? It appears that I will get to pay additional taxes on some of my vehicles that are valued over $4000.00 or if you own a boat or RV? Over all I love Arkansas and especially the support of our Contsitutional Republic. Proud Patriot here who grew up in Texas.

LOL.. We moved to NW AR. in 2005 from Mount Vernon, Washington. When we both retired in 2015 we moved north central Ar. . So glad we did, NWA was growing to fast, traffic was getting out of hand. I do not miss Rogers / Bentonville area. I love our area, all the winding roads, slower pace here. Farm country, awesome people, very laid back, easy going.

2011 transplant from Western Montana to Central AR. Lolo Pass was my happy place for x country skiing. Very, very different going Northern US to Southern US. Rural communities made up of longtime residents, generations-long families live clustered, life centered around church. Life very hard for some, much poverty. Most folks good and kind.

I recently moved here...you are correct in your information. I did my research before I came and I also would describe the city as a large small town. One of my loves, is how free I feel here..The east coast became to expensive, the grandkids said come here...I explored here two years before deciding to move. Cost of living was manageable. Do have tornados, and if you rent, you have to use caution, the Tennant laws are terrible. Drug use is high, but the opportunities are good. Before they called it the Natural state, it was called land of opportunity. Being almost 60 and moving here, was a good decision. The wages are not as good, but I feel free here, and that's priceless.
@bobbun96302 жыл бұрын
The rental note is definitely something to consider. Arkansas is the only state in the country where failing to pay rent is a criminal offense, rather than just a contract violation. It's not common, but you actually can go to jail for failing to pay your rent.
