The repubs in this state have one thing in mind: following tRump and trumpian ideals, which primarily means moving the state backwards. Imagine wanting to travel to Billings from Missoula, so you get in your car, travel in reverse and wonder why you end up in Idaho.

Montana's not cheap anymore? When was it ever cheap? People live on poverty wages just to have the beautiful scenery and access to that scenery. Wages have never kept up with the cost of living. We don't have the infrastructure for all the people that are moving into the state. Used to be able to get on the interstate and only see one or two cars every mile or so, not anymore. It's sad to see some of the small towns bursting at the edges with homes. Traffic jams. We never used to have traffic jams. I wish they would have put a fence around Montana back when National Geographic suggested it in the 80s.

If you’re from the South, you will experience culture shock anywhere in the Rocky Mountains. People assume that everyone in red states are all the same but they’re not. Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Idaho have much more in common with each other culturally than with other red states. While Montana is conservative, it’s really a purple state that leans more red similar to Colorado’s political affiliations but leaning more blue. Everyone from up here is not particularly known for being friendly because it’s every man to themselves around here. You might think that this is rude, but that’s just how the people are out here. All of these states came from a similar Western frontier background which is all about individualism and self-sufficiency. I’d say, with more transplants moving into all these states, the locals are actually growing more skeptical of outsiders. If you’re from the South, please keep in mind Montana is NOT the South! Montana is basically just Colorado 50 years ago.

My favorite thing about coming from Montana is that I feel voters do lean republican, but they also vote for good sense. My wife comes from the Bitterroot Valley, I come from billings, and sometimes we honestly cancel each other's votes out, especially on smaller local issues, but we both are voting for what we believe is best, not for a party agenda. People are polite, but also honest. You need to be self-sufficient to a point, but there is nothing wrong asking for help. If somebody is on the side of the road, you help that person if you can. If your neighbor runs out of sugar, they are comfortable asking you for some and you are happy to help. Etc.

Montana is one of the best states to homeschool in, very free that way, especially, from Billings westward. It's also very popular and growing with many officials and leaders that homeschool. It's common to cross back and forth between private, public, and homeschool for various reasons in Montana. Homeschool is also most common among the upwardly mobile and self-employed middle and upper middle class because it is NOT cheap or affordable. Homeschoolers are not isolated people in Montana and very socially involved in their communities. Montana is NOT an affordable state and you must have money or a good job to get a foot in the door or survive. Plenty of people desperate for workers in all income brackets, but there is NO housing for workers, thus why workers often turn down work in Montana.

@@jasonmountain4643 Well, I highly recommend it for the homeschooling environment and social support and even for how common it's become among liberal and conservative....and Montana has a lot of "crunchy" conservatives really into healthy food and supporting local everything. If I had the money, I'd consider Helena... Some very small place there... No huge home with acerage...Someplace where it's quiet... I'm into my 60s, never married, been careful not to help bring any children into this world, getting too old for dating, and just want to live the rest of my life in peace... I don't mind any of the following: the long cold winters, having to drive a fair distance to someplace of choice, investing in a good HVAC and emergency generator system, probably having my own well and septic system, the deep snow, investing in a good snow blower, owning a nice fortified 4x4, the possibility of bears, mountain lions, wolves, and badgers in my back yard, nor even the gun part at all! _ALL_ that would probably keep a few of the "undesirables" within my own family outta there anyway!

Thanks for being honest and not blowing sunshine up people's dresses about what it's like to live here. I was born and raised here, moved away for about 12 years and now I'm back with my husband. It can be pretty hard to live here, that's the truth. We don't need people watching a movie with Montana in it and "OMAAGAAAAWD! I HAVE to move there! It's GAARGUS!" No, never a good idea. Then come here and try to make it like the place they left. Why'd they leave in the first place? Things have changed drastically since I was a kid here in the 70's. I grew up in Kalispell and when I was a kid West Reserve was a gravel road all the way from West Valley school to Hwy 2/LaSalle. There was a blinking yellow light at the intersection of 93 and West Reserve. Now you can land a freekin plane in that intersection! All that mess north of town used to be farm land! There's an eye doctor right close to where a neighbor had their pig farm. Kalispell is not home anymore and that's so sad.
