You see this in little beach towns along the Oregon Coast. Everything is turned into short term rentals, the houses, apartments, everything. No one can afford to live there... Unfortunately our government does what the big corporations want. Taxes, regulations, permits etc are to help the big corporations and hurt the mom and pop businesses. We need to go back to a family based economy instead of a corporate based economy. In a free market there are no corporations because the government doesn’t charter corporations in a free market.
@wadebuck6911 күн бұрын
@jl8942 I agree. The only reason capitalism has not already collapsed this country is because after the stock market crash in 1929 people back then were smart enough to realize why it happened and set up strict regulations to keep it from happening again. Then shortly after the recovery was happening WWll started. When the war ended the middle class was strong and thriving because of those regulations on capitalism such as tax codes made it virtually impossible for billionaires to exist. It is estimated that during that time there were only about 6 billionaires and their money came from inheritance. Fast forward to the mid 1970's when the regulations started being loosened slightly due to the laws being changed where politicians could start accepting money from corporations and the rich. Then came ronald reagan who engaged in large scale Union busting, deregulated almost everything and normalized politicians being legally bribed. Then citizens united in 2010 which is one of the most deceptive names ever allowed for politicians to completely sell themselves for legalized bribes. After that it has been a free for all for everyone who can afford to bribe politicians. Wall Street, banks, private equity, corporations, and every other ultra wealthy person has been able to do pretty much whatever they want since then. Now there are 801 billionaires with combined wealth of $6.22 TRILLION dollars. All of that accumulated wealth in the hands of so few has been taken directly from working class and poor Americans through unregulated capitalism and it will not end until they have it all and we have nothing.

By my calculation, since 1992, LIBERALS have been president for 20 out of the past 32 years or 63% of the time. If this is true, why didn't the LIBERALS fix this problem with all of the time they have been in power?

The same thing is happening in Utah right now with the semi-privatization of Powder Mountain and the fully private Wasatch Peaks Ranch a stone's throw away. Deer Valley is expanding and creating the luxury Mayflower Mountain Resort with private residences. More and more land is being taken away from the public to accommodate the ultra-wealthy. Heart-breaking.

Welcome to every mountain/ski town in the US. Same here in Tahoe but its bay area techies driving the hollowing out of neighborhoods. Just saw half a dumpy duplex for $2200/month + deposit + utilities. Once the problem starts, it MUST be handled with local laws but easier said than done. Because the people who ARE the problem insert themselves into local politics and game the system.

Yes! Here in Miami I once had a local guy running for a city position talk to me. He owned a contstruction company. He said there were too many regulations for developers! Guy straight telling me why he wants to get into the city government to change the rules in his favor!!!!!
@Joe_J-MT_Boy5 күн бұрын
Okay... so you own this duplex and a realtor approaches you with an offer about twice what it's worth... for cash, so no Closing Costs. You sell it and become an instant millionaire. Who wouldn't do that if they could? Some of this could be fixed with income and property tax revision, but where is the commission to study the problem and recommend solutions? Montana is All Red Everywhere now, so not fixing it belongs to the Republican Party. I believe it will be a cold day in Hell before the Montana State Legislature does anything to fix the tax problem - or at least the part of it that originates at the state level. A huge part of the property tax dilemma is the fault of the cities and counties.

Don't be so neutral. I have heard rich and wealthy people talk about the rest of the 98% of our world, the largest group. They don't care about our struggles or concerns! It's all about continued exploitation of populations around the world to keep them in the lavish homes, yachts, resorts, expensive clothes, cars, airplanes, expensive restaurants, jewelry, various homes around the world. Also, making sure that the rest of us stay in our class so we keep producing for their benefit. I have spoken with a weathy man whose family has coffee plantations and how little they pay the workers. These rich/wealthy who have generations of wealth have been brought up to believe that expoitation of the masses is their right and that it's ok to take adavantage of everyone they can. They don't care about us. You think they are going to share their profits or gains with us? We are seen as only numbers to use for their personal fortunes and gains. Read the history of world and how we arrived at capitalism around the world. The story is pretty much the same everywhere.

Rent control is NOT the answer. If you want lower priced housing, you need to enable a market that allows *THOUSANDS* of small and independent builders to compete. The marketplace is set by hedge funds that use their political buddies to make an oppressive regulatory environment because small companies can't carry the huge debts and expenses for 2 and 3 years waiting for approval while sweetheart deals are made in the back room between private equity and their regulatory pals. THERE IS NO COMPETITION anymore. The government picks the winners and the winners want modern feudalism. This is class warfare, not left versus right.

As someone who lives in Butte for 10+ years, this is a huge problem. I was a homeless drug addict, sleeping in my car in the middle of the winter, and within 2 years, I was clean, sober and making $30+ an hour. Even when I was making that kind of money, it was impossible to find a place that wasn't half condemned for less than $1k a month. It's only going to get worse, and unless they lighten restrictions on building single-family dwellings, then it's not gonna change.

Multiple of my friends live out of their trucks while working full time and still can hardly afford to get by, I’ve had to move to more rural eastern montana just to cut costs but it’s still incredibly difficult. Montana has changed so drastically in the last 20 years it’s hardly recognizable for those of us who’ve lived here for generations, not even mentioning how poor our natives living conditions are… it’s a shame for the best state in the country to end up like this.

The silly thing of course is that this form of capitalism does have government intervention, doesn't it? But those interventions generally support corporations. In my opinion, a housing market crash is imminent due to the high number of individuals who purchased homes above the asking price despite the low interest rates. These buyers find themselves in precarious situations as housing prices decline, leaving them without any equity. If they become unable to afford their homes, foreclosure becomes a likely outcome. Even attempting to sell would not yield any profits. This scenario is expected to impact a significant number of people, particularly in light of the anticipated surge in layoffs and the rapid increase in the cost of living.

It's happening everywhere. The same problems montana is having the people in the cities, country wide have the same problem, theres just more of them in one place. They're not all drug users. Many can not afford a place to live or find a job. Entire families are in campers and cars. The entire country is in this mess. Homeless and hopeless leads to drug use. Its a downward spiral. Once you started down that spiral, it's hard to get back out.
