Focus on accuracy and the speed will follow. I like that. My Coursemate is focused on speed and when she types, she hits the keyboard aggressively and it makes nasty noise.😅

Haha, she sounds like an aggressive typer! How is her accuracy? As accuracy improves, speed will naturally come without thinking about it too much.

@@AnsonAlexander I don't really know how good her accuracy is. She disturbs the class with her aggressive typing 😂. I'm still learning how to type but I don't know how to quickly go back to the home row after typing. I shared your typing chat with some of my Coursemates. Such a nice chat. You're so good Alex. Awesome, thanks Temmy! I plan on updating some of the practice materials on AnsonAlex.com in the near future to be more complete and to recommend certain training websites once all the keys have been learned. I honestly remember being a bit of a loud typist myself and, one thing I would say, is that it is a lot of stress and pressure on the fingers and, after typing quite a bit, I would imagine the fingers may hurt a bit when pressing so hard on the keys. It's definitely not uncommon though and will maybe be something that I'll address with future content. Again, thanks for stopping by and engaging with the content. It's great that you're motivated to learn how to type - it will help you so much with future opportunities!

This advice is SPOT ON. I learned to touch type in the 80's in high school and it was the best investment I had ever made for my career. I don't look at the keyboard ever when I type. In fact, some of my keyboards don't have any writing on the keys. If you are constantly looking back-and-forth between the screen and keyboard, you'll have a lot of stress and strain and it will be harder to focus. Even worse, if you're not looking at the screen when you type, you may inadvertently make some serious mistakes. As a software engineer, looking at my code as I type is crucial for my focus.

Hmm, I agree with most points, except the binge learning, yes you will progress further in 72h if you spread them out over a longer period, but if your goal is to type faster and you dedicate more time to it, you might spent some more time to reach the same speed, but will reach it way earlier.

Follow the man's advice seriously. In the beginning, I focused too heavily. Once my speed plateaued at 40 WPM, them I actually started learning to type efficiently and accurately. I wasted literal weeks trying to type fastly with that method, now the muscle memory is really corrupted, but I would be properly relearning it soon enough.

I'm onboard with everything you said Mr. Anson and Grateful for providing instruction and information wonderfully. I just won't have the keyboard you recommend but will start with a detached regular/standard keyboard from computer which I feel is much better than any laptop keyboard. That's what I have right now.

Avoiding the very first mistake is what has boosted my typing speed a lot. I also like avoiding mistake number 10. I have fixed mistake number eight of using the incorrect finger positions and that as helped out as well. Mistake number 9 is the worst mistake of all.

Sure! That's as "mechanical" as they come! I originally learned to type on manual typewriters. It helps to teach you to hit each key with equal pressure. They had a couple of electric typewriters in the back, but those were reserved for the "advanced" students.

Yes, it's really tough when first starting out but, once you get there, you won't have to think about it ever again!

His very practical training considerations have helped me significantly. I have dyslexia and boy is it tough when most people will confidently laugh at their selves for typing 40wpm, after spending 10 minutes learning to touch-type, while for me 40wpm is my most optimistic aspersion. LOL!!! I am occasionally getting 30wpm on some of my easier typing app exercises. 5 months ago my original hunt and peck speed was 18wpm and after a month my touch typing was up to around the same.

@AnsonAlexander I am enjoying learning typing and I feel like this is key to getting the multi-dimensional benefits of repetition. There are so many details and nuances to continually revisit and refine... Greatest challenge? Dyslexia has different stigmas that present in different cases. Dyslexics usually find strength in whole pictures, so narrowing it down to a single struggle is kind of inconsistent with my experience. lol! If I am not fresh or in a rhythm I can struggle to differentiate key pairs like "e" vs "i", or "f" vs "j", and "g" vs "h", but this can also happen with same hand keys "c" vs "v" or " , " vs " . " *[Dyslexic tip/area to gain hope] Developing dexterity seems to help with staying more calm when I need to "downshift" my speed and for better accuracy and to maintain more confidence in my ability to speed up again after a given rough patch. Typing words from my mind or words I'm hearing is like a whole other ball game and even typing from hardcopy text does not feel anywhere near as comfortable as following the easier typing app cursor straight in front of me etc. Numbers, punctuation, and capital letters (in that order) significantly break up my ability to maintain a rhythm. The experience of feeling challenged is usually an anxious and aimless urgency. I might key letters that are in the word, but in the wrong order, or if I focus on keeping the letters ordered in my mind I can't find the key reflexively. It's like a working memory issue because my brain is not efficient with going in order. I am significantly slower with exercises that go one letter at a time, made-up words, or too many compounded sounds like "reconciliation". It's like trying to stay warm at night with just a baby blanket. Or predicting the decay of an electron (it's Schrodinger's "e"-key/"i"-key). I try to use the "shut up and computate" attitude as an apology, just down shift and rely on dexterity to hack through the dyslexia until production becomes systemic again.

Have you ever had the chance to type on an old Royal manual typewriter? You should give it a try if you get the chance. That's what I learned on in my high school typing class. My typing instructor could hit 120wpm on a Royal once he got warmed up. It was pretty impressive. Typing on one of them for 6-8 hours a day would give you Popeye arms. Thanks for the video. Trying to tune up my typing after all these years...

I am struggling to create enough muscle memory for letters that lie on the right of my keyboard. Should have known that J has that curvy design earlier :((

It’s all about repetition. Do you have the location of the letters memorized and just having trouble making the keystrokes or are your fingers unsure of where to go. If memorization is the challenge, I really recommend learning them one at a time. You could even spend a week per key that you’re having trouble with. By the end, you should have them memorized and will just be working on finger strength and flexibility.

Resetting or ruining your muscle memory by constantly typing badly is SO true. It only teaches you to remember how to type badly even more. It's amazing how much better you can type with a bit more focus on accuracy vs speed. Learning the shortcuts to correct are also very useful. Ctrl+backspace to delete the entire word to the left so you can just retype it is a good example.

Today I reached 103 wpm with 100% accuracy in 15 sec test in monkeytype, this took me more than a year to achieve this

I dont' know how this works but my left hand is writing full speed with every finger but my right hand is just typing with one finger 💀

Hmm, are you mostly typing on non-mechancial keyboards? It can take some time to get used to pressing a bit harder depending on the switches in the mechanical keyboard you're using.
