Electric scooter riding is not overly complicated, but there are a few common mistakes I often see new riders making when starting out on an electric kick scooter. I'll go over the 6 most common ones I see and how to avoid them. This guide will be helpful for both new and experienced riders looking to make sure they are riding properly and safely.

For mistake #5, don’t forget damp or wet road markings! Asking for traction on crosswalk paint in the morning is often a quick way to find yourself rolling on the ground. It’s absurd how slippery road paint can be.

One handing it is a VERY bad habit to have on a scooter. You might have total confidence in your abilities but you're only riding on borrowed time. Sooner or later, you'll get caught slippin... I broke both my legs on my scooter. It wasn't from riding with one hand, but it just as easily could've been. Hope you feel better bro.

@@peterchan9525 Yeah, I was pretty much going too fast in a congested area. Too fast for me to jump off and run it out. My legs are already weaker than normal bc of a type of chronic neuropathy I've had for years. When I bailed, I tried landing on my feet with my legs bent, but the force sorta shoved them back into the locked position the moment my feet hit the ground. I had matching tibial plateau fractures on the left and right legs, along with a much larger fracture down the tibia itself on the right leg. It sucked majorly... I still have a lot of trouble walking for extended amounts of time, but I HAVE learned to slow down and appreciate the scenery. Ain't gonna lie, I have PTSD every time I ride now. Honestly, I would've stopped riding for a little while longer if I had the choice, but my situation is complicated.

One thing I learned from mountain biking is to NOT tighten down the bolts for the cockpit controls. Rather, tighten them just enough to hold them in place, but loose enough that they will rotate if the scooter is dropped. That way, nothing should break easily if dropped. Good info.

Pretty good guide. I was reminded to do use my body to counteract the force while braking because of your old video stuck in the back of my mind while riding. I haven't been braking properly all the time when i went out for a ride. But indeed when i know i'm going really fast and i need to slow down by shifting my weight far back.

Some great advice there - my scooter is a Bogist C1 with a seat - I stand as well and use the seat as a brace between my legs, and that helps with stability too. One handed riding is a no-no, but possible at low speed while sitting and pressing knee against the stem. Wet leaves are the worst! Slow right down so not to need to be able to brake, and be prepared to jump off. Again, sitting is easier as can hang legs over the side and use as skids/stabilisers! I made a 3D printed fairing and windshield for mine - makes a huge different to aerodynamics, efficiency and keeps all of you dry in the rain! 🙂

For gear it largely depends on the speed you travel. Under 20mph I'd say a bicycle helmet and maybe wrist guards. If you're going faster than that then you really should get a full face helmet, wrist guards, knee guards, and possibly a motorcycle jacket that gives you elbow, shoulder, and back pads depending on how fast you're planning on going.

@BruceWayne15325 excellent advice! I just ordered an inmotion RS and plan on riding it at 35Mph to 45Mph just to keep up with the flow of traffic so if motorcycle gear is what you recommend, i should definitely start looking into it now. My order is supposed to arrive by December 4 to the 12th of this year so it gives me some time to look for the right gear. Thanks my dude. 😎🙏

@BruceWayne15325 8 ай бұрын
@@THEAVERAGEGUY1983 Definitely, if you plan on riding that fast then you absolutely should dress for the slide, not the ride. At that speed you are a motorcycle with tiny wheels. As a bonus you will look cool rocking motorcycle gear. Enjoy your ride! I love my Apollo Ghost. Cruising around at 35mph is a blast on it, and I get to work faster than my car since I don't have to fight traffic. Spend some time practicing evasive maneuvers (hard braking / quick turns to avoid potholes / car doors swinging open) before you do much road riding. Pavement doesn't taste good.

I'm goofy because I'm a southpaw using dominant side on the lead! Also increases my reaction time and control of my scooter! Also, both my feet are staggered but face almost completely forward on my relatively wide 6.8 inch deck. Coming from a martial arts background, my knees are always bent and redistributing my weight on acceleration/deceleration to my feet strictly is pretty easy.

I would add the #1 mistake that (mostly rental scooter riders) make is assuming they can just hop on and ride without any practice. Sure it's easy to ride a scooter, but if you don't spend a good amount of time practicing hard braking, and rapid avoidance of objects (such as potholes or doors opening quickly in front of you) then you're going to be eating the pavement or visiting a hospital.

That's certainly not true. I am 250 and I am doing just fine with 500w motor. If the controller is not matching the max rated motor power which is often the case, the scooter will be slow and have no power for any incline. Also I need to add that there is a big difference between 36v and 48v systems.

Some say you don't ride a scooter-scooter, but you sit on it just like on a loo. You can crap yourself eitherway if small wheels met small road imperfection. If I mentioned small wheels how can I not say sth about short wheelbase, narrow handlebars, constantly glazing small rotors... Any idea what else should be added?

Heres one for us with lower back injuries- keep your lead foot pointed forward and your body oriented forwards. Riding surfboard might seem sensible but it results in slides and other unexpected movement hurting your spine more. And don't use solid tire scooters, your spine will thank you. I do manually signal one left turn on my commute but I know the surface quality and am going straight at that point so I've gotten away with it.

Great video! I have a question on downhill riding, I don’t like going fast downhill so is it better to switch down gears to use the speed restriction or just ride on the brakes? It can be tricky switching gears while moving and with my eyesight I can’t always see the number on the controller. On the other hand I don’t want to put unnecessary wear on the brakes. What’s your suggestion?
@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide

For downhill speed control, regen braking is your best friend. If you have a dedicated regen brake lever, like on the Apollo models, you can use that to control downhill speed while getting a bit of charge back. Otherwise, most regen braking is activated when you press the brake levers just a bit. On most scooters you can activate the regen braking without fully engaging the mechanical brakes, getting the speed control without heating up the brakes. Hope this helps! -Mitchell

Excellent video guys! I once tried riding a bicycle up a very steep incline leading to a parking lot only to pop a wheelie and had to leap off the bike. I tried 2 more times attempting to hold the front wheel down by shifting my torso over the handlebars, but the incline was too steep, and the front wheel lifted up anyway and I wound up walking the bike up the hill. Does that situation ever come up on a scooter?
@636theofthebeast8
@636theofthebeast8 8 ай бұрын
It's all about how close your center of mass is relative to the back wheel contact point horizontally, and how much you're accelerating. I'd say this is probably more likely on an e scooter as the handlebar prevent you from leaning forward as much as you can on a bicycle, therefore shifting your center of mass forwards. That must have been a massive incline combined with serious power lol

I take my hand off to adjust my glasses all the time, the shake and bump of the pavement just rattles my face up badly. Wobble bad but you gotta know yourself and your ride. If you can keep your grip closer to the center of the handlebars you have a better chance of staying upright. Leaning against the bars is fine but you're more likely to fall off if you hit a nasty rock. I've been riding since 2009, if you follow balance instincts you'll be ok. Generally two hands is more comfortable anyhow.

It is recommended that upon learning to ride to adopt a 50/50 stance trading front and back feet regularly so that you do not get stuck with any one stance giving the rider a much greater opportunity to manage muscle fatigue on long rides. Furthermore, the symmetrical muscle development you will serve you much better elsewhere than the lopsided asymmetrical muscle development obtained by always using the same stance. A scooter is not a snowboard.

Dominant foot to the rear over which foot I naturally choose to place in front when riding a skateboard. That one has really got me to thinking. I ride a skateboard with my dominant foot in front (right) while kicking with my left. I would think it would be safest to ride an escooter in the manner you would ride a skateboard in, but then again, if I had to bail, I see where I would certainly want my right foot behind me to hop off. I think my wires a crossed. Trial, error, protective gear and are you really in that much of a hurry.

I commute with an old lead-battery scooter with small diameter but wide, air-filled tires and driving one handed (fixing (sun)glasses, giving turn signal, these things) everything over slow walking speed feels extremely unsecure. The front begins to „wobble“ and it is very hard to go straight or steer back then (without using half the road). Can't really brake because front brake and tje "turning-style" accelerator are fixed on the same handle which means either slow down to a nearly stop in ongoing traffic or go and hope :-D This lead me to drive home on a slightly longer route with only ONE "real" turn left - which is actually the driveway to the house (the first is in a "traffic reduced slow driving zone" which is so narrow you can't be overtaken and everybody has same right of way, from dog to truck - so I go to the middle of the road and just turn left). Interestingly it's even quicker, although a good bit longer and not as flat as the shortest way. But as I only have to stop once, when there's heavy traffic maybe twice, and just cruise along, the battery-runtime is also not really negatively affected: as I don't have to accelerate from a full stop several times, it's in low two-figure mV-range :-)

Maybe depends a little on the scooter (the first I ride weighs nearly the same amount less than me than my other one has itself) - and what you mean by „comfortable“. Keep the revs up and use the brake a bit to regulate - you can go even slower than walking then. But you need sort of „controlled force forward“; I use thumb and index-finger to regulate acceleration instead of whole hand. Try and practice it: It's quite much like standing on a stopped bike at a traffic light or so - just find the „spot“.

How to signal when needing to turn left like on a bike? Trying to figure this out, and first ride on my scooter i went over handlebars. Also, why are the brake levers reversed from MTBs? Not sure I'll ever get used to that.

Not really a technique thing, but a steering damper can make the scooter a lot more safe and forgiving at high speeds when making slight turns or riding on rough roads that can throw the alignment into a wobble. It basically eliminated that for me. It even feels better riding at low speeds, and you can use one hand. With that though, I also think one should learn how to at least get comfortable riding the scooter without a damper to learn the proper balancing techniques, so they don't use it as a crutch.

If you overload your controller you can cause it to burn out. Pushing with your foot to help it would actually be working to prevent that, but it all boils down to how hard you are working your scooter. The best suggestion I can give is to get a dual motor scooter (preferably 800W+)

The best practice is to avoid any surfaces that are known to be slippery. If that's not possible, then slow down and avoid rapid acceleration / braking / turning. It's not much different than driving a car in snow if you have experience with that. You just have to respect the slippery surface.

After 5 years of riding e scoots, i have a short list for beginners: 1) when you first get your scooter, just jump on and hit full throttle, dont be a woose 2) it is safer to be at full throttle for any turn, even gravel and u-turns 3) when you brake, lean as far forward as you can. When you hit the throttle, lean as far back as you can 4) if your scooter catches on fire when charging, just get on it and ride as fast as you can. You will look badass with flames flying out of the scooter and all the air will help put the fire out. 5) to avoid potholes, learn to wheelie. You will look cool and it allows you to avoid hitting both wheels in the same pothole

@@ESG-ElectricScooterGuide There are two things I would like to know, in all seriousness. 1: Can you get, do you know, universal stabilisers for e-Scooters? 2: Do Universal Seats make any difference to the balance? I've been practicing my stance on my scooter at home, in the back yard. Having no riding experience at all, I'm not about to just take off on it. That's a good way to the emergency room. Thankfully, I am not that stupid. I want to get used to it first. The problem that I am having, is that the Scooter is leaning all the way to the left, causing it to tilt uncontrollably. I don't know how to counter act it. I was wondering if a Universal Saddle would make any difference?

What? People actually operate their scooters with their finger throttle pointing towards the sky? I feel like I would've wrecked my Dualtron sooner if I did it like that since I use the brakes religiously as a road rider. As for the hint in traction. I feel like this is the most important one as when I started riding, I was unaware of what traction was and to let you know, I was riding my WideWheel Pro which only had solid tires. It's so much more easier to slide on their tires by locking your brakes or riding on any form of wet surface. I never personally knew that riding over a wet bridge can be as bad as riding on just leaves and when I did upgrade to my dualtron Eagle Pro, I noticed an immediate difference in tire quality as most wet surfaces that I brace myself to ride over tend to have a lot better grip than I usually anticipate but that's because the new tires actually had treads. Still never played stupid with wet surfaces that I was aware that I could fall off my scooter risking injuring to myself. I now ride a roadrunner pro (Probably my favorite scooter for it's price to performance ratio) which I even ride in the rain without care since I can avoid most hazards as I ride the same roads I need to travel to when it comes to work. Most I only have to watch out for is hydroplaning since the monster has such strong acceleration that I had to go into the settings and reduce the power for the highest 3 settings just to stop the wheels from spinning when it comes to using the throttle on that "seated scooter". I may have barely noticed it on my Dualtron Eagle Pro since it doesn't really accelerate that fast but for a scooter that can hit 40MPH; it sure did felt fast. Also, about the riders using only hand. This needs to also be advertised harder. It's depressing to see many people who do ride with 1 hand just to text on their phone which honestly is some next level shit that should never be thought of once you feel like you lose your center of gravity/balance.

Wrong wrong WRONG and maybe DEAD WRONG BIG SAFETY ISSUE here. at the 3:30 mark of this video. When you turn left, your weight gets shifted to the right., causing you to lean to the right on a hard right turn. If you lean to the right, your scooter will STILL only go straight and you will fall over. The quick turn in the opposite direction you want to turn in, creates the lean. You cannot lean either way without this technique. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to make a RIGHT turn without first turning the handlebars to the LEFT. NOTE; Anybody who does a successful turn, does this technique, few knowingly, most unknowingly. This is a safety issue. Death or injury can occur if one does NOT study this turning technique. If a situation comes up that one has to make an instant emergency turn at high speed, if one simply leans the scooter will not lean in the desired way. At higher speeds a gyroscopic phenomenon occurs. When momentum is at play, in a critical time of need, you need to know how to SHIFT that momentum.

I agree 100%. This is called counter steering and how you ride a motorcycle. Simple way to learn this is while going strait just turn the wheel a tiny bit in either direction and you feel the bike/scooter lean the opposite way. Like he said in video you turn by leaning.
