BIG note on using a MTB helmet. You are at a VERY high risk of a collarbone fracture. To avoid the risk you can get a neck brace that will protect your spine and collarbone. In our rather large group of PEV riders collar bone fractures with mtb helmet’s are common. Just a heads up

I am curious as to why that would be the case, and also as to why an MTB helmet would be any more prone to collarbone injuries than I am assuming a regular motorcycle helmet.

I learned this tip when I used to ride motorcycles: When helmet shopping wear the helmet around the shop for 10 minutes. You'll feel self conscious and dorky, but will notice anything wrong with the fit. Myself I get pressure points at my temples and a mild headache with many helmets. For my scooter I found a Fox full face MTB helmet that fits perfectly.

my Bell Qualifier helmet saved my face: didn't see a pothole too deep for my scooter to handle, catapulted me over the handlebars at about 25 MPH, landed directly on my face, hit the street so hard the visor popped off. The only other protection I was wearing was gloves, no pads or armor (I was in shorts and a t-shirt!!), and I walked away with abrasions/bruises on my elbows and knees, but no serious injuries, not even a sore neck, even though I absolutely landed on my face. I was rowing and working out as I normally would the next day. I love my Bell Qualifier!

One piece of safety gear I wear most often for bike touring is my cycling gloves. I avoid all the lycra and such and buy good quality, heavy double leather palmed, tricot backed gloves. They protect the hands on taped handle bars, but are also really good for crashes. I also have some stingray leather, and didn't realize that utility. I will be adding some of that to my gloves.

I ride my fantastic Treverun 11+ fighter stand up electric scooter almost all the time at its top speed of 51 mph, and I bought top of the line protection gear, wrist guards, elbow guards, knee guards, and a DOT helmet, and safety goggles for eye protection against flying bugs. All my protection gear feels comfortable & looks really attractive. I do wear above the knees shorts in the hot summer season but I'm very alert, and professional at riding at 51+ mph. I will probably switch to the full cover helmet that covers your chin in the event of a wipe out. Thanks for posting this video, it will give scooter owners the way to go in the field of good protection. Great work guys.👍👍🤸🤸🤸🤸😁🗝️

My new helmet arrived today after watching this and a few other videos. I’m sharing the road with unpredictable big-city car traffic 98% of the time I’m out, so I decided to invest even though I don’t go quite as fast. I’d rather feel silly bringing a motorcycle helmet into the office than getting a life-changing head injury on the way in.

Good topic! While I was riding escooters quite a bit (without much gear, which is stupid), another channel introduced me to es8's a couple months ago and I've been hooked ever since. Unfortunately I eat sh!t for the first time recently while carving over some acorns and since I've decided to get (and wear!) more safety gear after removing some skin on pavement and gravel! I immediately picked up the Triple Eight Sweatsaver Half Helmet and their elbow pads, some knee and hip/tailbone pads, a decent set of fingerless gloves (so I can still use the remote) and a motocross jacket with full upper body pads for riding in cooler weather when I can wear a sweatshirt or jacket over it. I feel so much safer wearing this gear while riding now!

Thanks for the video Paul and Mitchell! I am pretty much in motorcycle gear these days riding EUCs. I do tend to spend more money on the motorcycle stuff that is light and comfortable (i.e. graphite helmet, D30 padding, etc.) However, I do like Mitchell's solid protection and low weight options.

I don’t see this often but I use the demon shin guards and absolutely love them for Arizona heart and the pair have lasted plus easy to put on/off. For helmet, again, I love my Kali full face down hill style and from my understanding it has no DOT but they did say in literature it could easily pass DOT (IDK?). All I have ever hit was low branches grazed but better than hitting my head while riding my EUC. Soard brand of wrist protectors slid nicely in one incident at 20mph still wearing same ones for 2 years and continuing.

Best safety on a budget is to get a $20 pair of wrist guards to protect your palms & wrists, and a $120 Bell Qualifier motorcycle helmet. That's what I use for every ride. I tend to ride between 25-35mph.

Big correction at 2:24 -- FMVSS 218 is the DOT standard. It's the same thing. It does not require outside testing. And SHARP is a rating system, not really a certification. If a helmet gets 1 star from SHARP, that's not good. Probably what you should have said is to look for DOT + ECE or DOT + Snell.

@@PBST_RAIDZ Thank you. I did receive an X-ray within days of the fall that showed no broken bones. A subsequent MRI showed a 1 centimeter partial tear of the rotator cuff. Two months later, while the shoulder does ache at night, full use of the arm has thankfully returned - though I’m yet to restart my pushup routine. Here’s the lesson: Scooters are not like bicycles; do NOT take your hands off the handlebars at any time while in motion, not even for a second. Not even to scratch your nose or chin.
