On the topic of sight like for the red light. Just because reptiles can't see the color red it doesn't mean they cannot see light. If you compare it to being blind ALOT of people think that when someone is blind they can't see anything but it actually ranges from person to person there are some colors, movements, sizes and things that can and cannot be seen from person to person. Just because someone says a reptile can't see the color red does not mean it can't see light or some other form of color from the red light. Being blind to red doesn't mean you're blind to light. A color is different from an illuminated color. A better way to understand is color blind people. They may not see the color correctly but they can still tell if it's glowing or not. Or dogs, they are color blind but they can tell if something is bright or not. So red light lamps can mess up your reptiles sleeping rhythms.

They did not have a proper heat lamp, no basking spot, a small red heat lamp that gave little heat for the size of the tank, no thermometer, the only substrate was calcium sand, he was only fed a pellet diet with the occasional 3 superworms, and the closest thing to a hide was a small piece of wood the propped up in the corner. It's taking me over a year to get him to start eating vegetables and other insects and reach a healthy weight.

Pellets and freeze dried are never suggested for single use however they can be added to a varied diet. They're more convenient for quickly feeding, people seem to act like they are the worst thing ever but they are good for adding a little extra variety. Some beardies actually refuse veg and adding a few freeze dried animals into the veg will get them to start eating it more and eventually you can take them away and they'll eat the vegetables on their own.

I went to my lps a while ago and they had baby beardies (and other reptiles but I only asked about the beardies) I wanted to know what their experience with sand was, (they had sand in with the baby beardies) and they recommended using calci-sand and said all these things that were the exact opposite of the truth and I almost had a panic attack explaining that “from the research I’ve done calci sand is really bad especially for baby reptiles.” The people there are really nice, but I feel like they haven’t done up to date research on any pet care and it makes me super anxious every time I ask them a question. Also one of the two beardies they had was super sick and probably died very soon after. I wanted to save it but they probably wouldn’t have given it to me anyway. :(

And the little wooden half log hides harbor bacteria and mold, they’re so hard to disinfect and they generally aren’t a great hide choice for most reptiles as they are open on two ends. Caitwn reptile carpets are good as long as you clean them regularly. Some geckos struggle with some carpets but that's just something you need to look into beforehand. I always hear a big debate on carpets. Reptiles with larger claws can get them stuck. I also hear the rubber rock mats are dangerous because small pieces can come off. . I kept my leopard gecko on a rubber mat for a long time. Before trying bioactive. (She was dropped off at a store and the store sold her with all her supplies from previous owner) the mat was old and had no loose pieces. I even washed and scrubbed it and none came loose . HOWEVER I have noticed brad new rubber mats can have loose pieces. Washing and scrubbing them before use may be a good idea. What is your thought on rubber mats or rugs/carpet?
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
Reptiles, Fish, and More carpets are usually great, I've seen a lot of reptiles use them without any problems whatsoever and not seen a case of one getting actually stuck... sometimes they get stuck for like half a second but it's never a problem They also now have reptile carpets which are like rough material and not a fabric so they don't have any risk of claws getting stuck. The main bad thing about carpets is that they hold bacteria a bit, this isn't a problem if you clean them often though so I guess it depends on you. No matter what people will find a reason to complain you should just find what's best for you personally.

Ugly Trash you shouldn't really use any lamps for most snakes, if you want a night light I would just recommend getting some light beside your bed and not for the animal. I want to get a hamster and I read so much about sand and that noncalcium reptile sand is good and I thought that calcium sand must be good for reptiles then. If it's not even good for reptiles what is it even good for? Like mixing it with noncalcium reptile sand is also dumb. Because then they might eat ordinary sand because they want the tiny bits of calcium

Ellie Rae there's nothing wrong with freeze dried being in a varied diet, they are only bad if it's the only thing you feed. I'm sure it would be appropriated to have more options, my pixie frog loves freeze dried grasshopper lol

I have a stupid heat rock that’s never been opened just chilling in my closet because the stupid lady at the pet store kept telling me over and over how I NEEDED one (I was new to caring for beardies and was pretty sure they were bad for them) but she was so persistent that I caved in. Got home, did research and confirmed they were indeed bad.. meant to bring it back and just never got around to it since the closest pet store was an hour away. 😒

What would be the alternative to a heat pad on an enclosure that you cannot stick the heat pad to the outside? Do I put it inside and risk burning the animal or do I just hook a heating rock to a thermostat to ensure it won't overheat
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
ChimeraKnight heat pads usually always go on every enclosure... but if not then still don't use heat rocks even with thermostats they are a unnecessary risk.
@ChimeraKnight5 жыл бұрын
@@lemonland6523 not all enclosures allow the use of heating pads since they must be installed outside of the cage, cages with a thick base or are attached to a stand cannot be heated with a pad, but again, since a thermostat would eliminate the variable that causes heat rocks to be dangerous, what logical argument is there not to use one?
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
ChimeraKnight thermostats don't stop the dangers of heat rocks, their problem is they malfunction and are faulty. But even if the base is thick and even if there is a stand there are heat mats which will still work
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
If there is no possible way of it working then you could possibly stick it to the bottom of the enclosure facing down but you would need to make sure there's no way a reptile could mess with it. And you'd need to secure the probe of the thermostat so it doesn't move so that the heat will be right
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
There's also a risk of the probe being moved if a heat rock is used. It's just an unnecessary risk. Some people use them without problems, but why risk it
@notsorry36315 жыл бұрын
when i was young, my mom kept iguanas and heat rocks was all there was. i dont know if heat pads just werent that available back then or what but that's what we had and we never had an issue but i would say heat pads are better.
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
Not Sorry some can be fine but they are an unnecessary risk, there wasn't a lot of variety in care until kinda recently and now we have to get rid of old methods because they weren't as effective as the current care requirements.

There shouldn’t be any lights on at night. Use a heat mat. Or, if you need/want overhead heating, use a ceramic heat emitter, deep heat projector, or radiant heat panel. Any heat source must be connected to a thermostat. Measure the temp with a digital thermometer.

I feed my beardie canned cockroaches since owning roaches like dubias and breeding them is illegal where I live (Canada) and supplement that with mealworms/superworms, and crickets on occasion with hornworms as treats. I also get canned silkworms since my guy really likes them. Everything gets dusted with either calcium or a multivitamin and the live insects get gut-loaded with the same veggies I feed my beardie.

Hey, so this is random but I'm sure tyler wouldn't answer me and I'm looking for someone with a beardie.. I have one, He is almost 2 years old, he was re-homed to me about 6 months ago... anyway, how active is your beared dragon? Mine literally lays around all day or sleeps... hes been like this since I got him but he is starting to worry me, he only really wonders around if I take him out of his enclosure
@emma-leebaiani87855 жыл бұрын
@@carolineo9532 I would check your temps in your tank, and see if they're too low because that could be impacting his energy. It could also just be the weather, with it being winter and all the colder it is the more lazy my beardie seems to be, regardless of whether my temps are good. I live in the north, and we usually try to conserve money and not crank the heat up all the way until we absolutely have to, so my guy's usually sleepy or hiding in one of his caves sleeping the day away around this time. I don't know if that helped but hopefully it did!

Caroline O if you have UVB then it's not a problem. Some beardies are just lazy. If you don't have UVB then that could be a reason it's not very active because they need it

I would avoid using those analog thermo/hygrometers. They’re not very accurate and I’ve heard horror stories snakes climbing up on them and getting the adhesive stuck to them.
@lemonland65235 жыл бұрын
Xymus D that happened to my snake!! It got stuck on its eye, we had to spend hours safely removing it and she's fine now. But it was a scary time and we have not bought any analog thermometers since that happened. Even if the snake doesn't climb it the heat alone from an enclosure is enough to make it fall and stick to an animal 😫 I always advice against. Thermometer guns are the best
