These are reptile morphs you should avoid getting! Bearded dragons, ball pythons, leopard geckos, etc. have morphs that can cause neurological issues and some physical issues as well!

Worse is when Bryan Barczyk who has a big following on KZbin and beginners look up too tell people it's all right to buy spyder python and that the neurological issues are very minor. Bryan makes about $400 on average for Spyder pythons, if people stop buying them, he's gonna lose a lot of business. I think people should step back and ask, should you breed an animal who will have NEUROLOGICAL damage. This isn't like a 1% chance, this is a handful. Humans are smart enough to know it is not ethical to continue breeding an animal with genetic defects. As hobbyist we are the ones breeding these snakes, these snakes don't decide themselves. Snakes are no different than humans, the same ethicality of not having a baby if you know the kid is gonna have a genetic defect that will affect the quality of life. The conversation should have ended when breeders have found out that there is a good percentage of spyders that have a neurological problem.

People just don't care, they just view them as pets they don't have to take care of them. The feelings and health of the animal isn't taken into consideration.

@@darkapothecary4116 I wouldn't say they treat them as a "pet" more like a household object, a pet like a dog should be cared for lovingly, you should be able to provide the animals needs before you even buy the animal. Plus you shouldn't be aiming for the minimum, many people just ask what is the smallest cage size or the cheapest supplies when they first start off.

More like too many people propagating “neurological issues” myths. Too many people spreading misinformation on the reasons these issues exist and it’s not the “morph” themselves. You can’t blame a kids autism on his brown hair and white skin tone when you you see autism in other kids with varying hair colors and skin tones. It makes zero sense. If genetics play a role then it is snake specific not morph specific.

Bearded dragon breeder here; "silkies" should absolutely be considered a genetic DEFECT. Not only is it very difficult to provide them with adequate UBV, it's difficult to provide them an adequate quality of life. If they can climb it, it can tear/cut them. If they can't climb they become stressed. While bearded dragons do need a tank that is more long than tall, they NEED to be able to climb as well, since climbing helps them feel safe. Silkies are a result of the leatherback genetics. There are 2 variations of the leatherback gene, and you need both to create leatherbacks. 1 variation is more dominant, and breeding two dragons with this variation results in silkback dragons. Microscale is somewhere between leather and silk, and can be difficult to care for as well. I have an absolutely stunning translucent microscale dragon acquired from PetSmart, and plenty of requests to breed her. But I have no clue to her genetics, so I will not be breeding her, sadly. Her sheds are never easy, and they happen more frequently than our normal and leather dragon's sheds. I've also heard (though this isn't officially confirmed) that translucent dragons tend to be quite insane, and I concur.... After 6 months, this dragon still launches herself nearly 18 inches straight up in attempt to devour entire human limbs that enter her domain, and has been doing this since she was a mere 4 inches in overall length. About PetSmart/PetCo breeding: You have a VERY small number of individual stores them buy from quality breeders. 90% of the stores within the chain get ALL of their animals from "Sun Pets" in Florida. Sun Pets does NOT selective breed at all in any kind of way. They simply put a random male and female together, and you get what you get. Sun Pets is a TERRIBLE company, with horrible husbandry, ad improper care of their "assets".

Agree with all of this. My Petco doesn't get any of our reptiles from that vendor but we have vendors we like more than others due to the health of the animals we receive. At my store we have local rescue phone numbers and websites on hand and always suggest adoption first. I will say I've worked at both chains in Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Washington. I've never had healthy iguanas. I'd rather not sell them period and never order them but if a sale comes up they auto ship them. They stress so easily and always need some sort of medical attention. I'll be beyond happy when the chains quit selling animals but they should start with iguanas.

Lyssa Caruso unfortunately unscrupulous people don’t care about the huge genetic complications than many animals have. Just look at bulldogs for instance, they are so malformed that they can’t even breed or give birth on their own and yet it is considered “acceptable”. Their lifespan is about half of an average dog as well.

So I work at a chain pet store and I had NO IDEA what a silky bearded dragon was. Please do not go into a chain pet store and purchase an animal in general (whether its a fish or a dog) without knowing what you're getting yourself into because I'm not trained by the store to know what I know. Everything I know about the animals we sell is through my own research and passion. I will straight up refuse the sell of an animal if someone is very obviously not informed about the animal or not willing to provide it with enough care because the supplies needed to care for the animal are "too expensive". We aren't all bad I promise but I have to put some blame on the customers that go into stores and impulse buy animals/fish. I'll keep a look out for silky bearded dragons and let my manager know about the risks. I haven't seen any in the year I've been employed there but I'll keep a look out. Thank you.

Don’t feel too bad. The problem is that this information is not released to consumers by breeders and sellers, you basically have to do an in-depth analysis of what only seems to be a scale patter because nobody wants you to know certain morphs come with strings attached. The fact that spider morphs are so popular is because people willingly refuse to inform pet owners of what they’re going to get. There’s also the whole masking of issues with cutesy names. For spider ball pythons it’s the wobble, which sounds oh-so-cute until you realize it’s the result of the snake having serious neurological damage from birth.

My 1st BP was a lesserbee. Beautiful snake that was sold to me in a shady way. At the time I had heard whispers of the spider gene not being so great so did not look for one. I saw him at an expo and was just amazed at it's beauty, not even knowing that spider was in the bee gene. When the guy told me what a lesserbee was I was sad and ready to put the snake down and walk away. The guy assured me that this one was fine (he was already like 2 or 3 years old) and that spider wobble 'wasn't that bad anyway and people are just blowing it out if proportion". He then sliced the price almost in half.....dirty dealer indeed. The snake was pretty grumpy for a BP since day one but he started out a good eater and pretty stable. After a year though he stopped eating, then he started corkscrewing. I ended up giving him to experienced snake keepers at the reptile store in my area. I couldn't handle it. To this day I will NEVER even think of buying another spider anything and shame on those people who say 'it's not that bad'. SHAME! Then some years later I saw a surrendered silkie beardie at the same store. I fell in love with her and though I never really wanted a beardie like...ever...she called to me. I talked extensively with the guys there about her care requirements and they were very honesty about the intensity of her needs. After thinking it over I decided to adopt her. She is beautiful and has quite a personality but all those things Tyler touched on are absolutely true. Her sheds SUCK! Doesn't matter what lotion I use how often I soak her, they SUCK! She has a pretty good appetite but can't properly metabolize so she is now 4 years old and the size of a yearling. The owner before me didn't know proper silkie care and treated her like any other beardie resulting in a few missing toes, a third of her tail missing, and something going on with her bottom lip (possible and? Maybe just some bad sheds that disformed it, not sure). Like the Spider BP though, I will NEVER get another silkie. I purposefully take her to expos to grab people's attention then educate them about why they are bad. Luckily I have never seen anyone selling silkie at an expo. These 'morphs' are no joke and I really wish breeders and sellers would just STOP! Ir at least be honest about the issues. Shady enough to produce these animals and even worse to lie about the severity of their needs. Just...UHG! OK...I'm done now lol. Thank you for an excellent video Tyler.

Actually they don’t just up and develop it. It’s due to the breeding. Yes it’s a major flaw, as in 70% of super cinnamon hatchlings die in the egg. The kink it had wasn’t even severe or all that noticeable and didn’t affect its movements or quality of life in any way. I find it really interesting how you can almost neatly divide those that support selling and breeding animals that are deficient by their age. I wonder what that says. Do more experienced people look at their animals more as livestock vs younger people that see them as companion pets? I don't know, but there is probably some interesting information there. Personally, I am against selling, buying breeding animals with known issues. I don't understand why people get so defensive. I also had no idea these other animals can also have issues. Just goes to show that in research one should trust no single source and don't stop learning about an animal just because you have a care sheet memorized.

It's the same thing with millenials and baby boomers lol. I think the biggest difference is that millenials and following generations are just more and better educated. We didn't get pulled out of high school or college to go fight a war. We can see that our planet is dying and we generally care about the animals on that planet. There's also more and more research coming out on reptiles in general, and I think we're one of the most highly read generations yet so we read stuff, we learn and then we try to educate. When that happens we get called idiots for trying to ban straws or you know, stop needless breeding of animals. I'm in a leopard gecko "beginner" group on fb. Neither of those morphs are mentioned in the care sheets, which funnily enough havn't been updated since 2015. We're learning more now about what these creatures are really like than what we thought we knew 4 years ago even.

I see what serious problems have been created in different dog breeds, because of both back yard and more legitimate breeders, breeding for appearance, while ignoring the serious problems they are creating to get the look they want. I got my first ball python some time ago, I researched everything about husbandry and was very nervous about taking good care of him, I got him from a good reputable breeder, my boy is a Woma who, as I found out later, also have wobble. I wasn’t aware wobble even existed and the breeder never even mentioned it, I had to find out all on my own when I saw him doing the weird flip movements and the wobbling in his head when he went at his food. I’ve been making accommodations, like changing the size of his enclosure, figuring out the best way to feed him and keeping handling to a minimum. I love him I just... wish I knew about it before I got him, I don’t really agree with breeding animals that can have a bad quality of life especially after experiencing it first hand. Thank you for the video! It’s good to know what the morphs bring with them and I didn’t know about some of these! Next time I get a ball python I’ll research issues in morphs more throughly!

In general I think that people should look at shelters/people adopting out their pets first before going to breeders with any pet, but I think people should do this especially for genetically defected breeds. You want a spider ball python? Cool, look on Craigslist. You want a pug? Cool, look at a nearby humane society. You want a Scottish fold? Cool, look at a nearby shelter. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to take care of these breeds, but what’s wrong is supporting the breeding of them. By looking at other sources, you’re not supporting the breeders that sell them, therefor they make no profit on their genetically defected and suffering animals.

I agree completely. It's why I get so pissed whenever people say they "rescued" something from a petstore. It's like, no. Unless the store lost money in the end, you bought that animal and are helping to fuel the pet trade. If you REALLY wanted to rescue something, go to an animal shelter or get one off craiglist that clearly needs a new home, but don't delude yourself into thinking you saved that animals life when in reality, you doomed more animals to that fate.

I am about to get a new puppy nrxt year. I love whippets, and my late dog was a whippet that I got as a puppy when I was 13. I almost took a whippet that needed rehoming, but it turned out he didn't like other male dogs, which would've made my long visits to my parents impossible. So I'm choosing a breeder. It's nice to raise your own dog. I loved training mine and seeing how brilliant she became as an adult. As for shelters, many dogs coming from them have special needs regarding training and keeping them. I know I couldn't necessarily handle a resque dog, even though I have owned and trained dogs before. Also, here there aren't strays, mostly because people don't abandon their dogs. People are bringing in strays from neighbouring countries where things aren't as great. These dogs might carry bacteria that are super resistant to antibiotes, and even illnesses like rabies, which is something that hasn't been a problem here in ages. So I'll rather get a puppy from a good, responsible breeder. We have no shortage of them. Oh, and here it's illegal to sell cats or dogs on pet shops, which should be the case everywhere in the world. I think the most important thing when getting an animal is to know what you're getting in to. Whether you buy or adopt one.

I'm mostly in the boa community myself, and I've heard of at least one gene there that causes neurological issues as well, though I can't remember the name of it right now. I'll have to dig that one up again.. Edit: Ah, it was the Super Motley. Apparently they tend to die around the two year mark (which is absolutely despicable for an animal who could otherwise live to twenty-five), due to issues with the spinal column. Unlike the Spider gene, this seems to be caused by far too much inbreeding and may be able to be reversed in the future with the addition of enough healthy new blood, but we'll see.

if someone doesn't consider the issues with these morphs bad enough to avoid breeding them, you have to wonder where they'll draw the line at what IS bad enough. imo, ethical breeders should not take even the slightest risk of producing animals they know could have a reduced quality of life, that only have that reduced quality of life because the breeder consciously decided more of that morph should exist.

I'm watching a friend's Enegma Leopard Gecko since I have a few other special needs animals. She loses weight very easily, and has trouble eating, sometimes missing her food six or seven times, even though I hold her worms and such with tongs. I only hold her when I'm cleaning her enclosure, which stresses her, so her head tilts to the right until she ends up just corkscrewing in my hands. It's best to just get her in a substutute enclosure while I clean her tank out. She gets stressed with other geckos nearby, and my friend is in the process of moving, so I'm holding onto the baby until everything at the new house gets figured out and so the transition will be as stress free for the gecko as possible.

I think it's great that you are using your platform to educate people about these designer morphs and the health issues associated with some of the more complex morphs. A lot of first time pet owners (regardless of species) flock to KZbin to learn more about the animals they might want. I think it's great that so many channels are putting out informative videos like this that could steer novices away from these. One tip for a video like this, try to avoid saying "neurological issue" over and over and try to name a more specific descriptor for a trait like wobbling in spider morph pythons or enigma leopard gecko morphs often experience seizures. I'm glad you're getting the word out so that novice pet owners will be more informed. Thanks for looking out for the pets who might not get the best care from novices who wont be prepared to address them.

Great video! The animal community is full of so many different types of people, and for a long time I think breeders have gotten away with questionable morals and shotty ethics when it comes to the animals they breed. I think that when a breeder purposefully breeds animals that fail to thrive (yes, the goal of animal breeder should be thriving animals, not just surviving animals) they are completely irresponsible and do damage to the hobby as a whole. While I personally have no issue with breeders as a concept, breeders who contribute to overpopulation and general animal suffer deserve to be called out and scrutinized because their practice does more harm than good.

Many spiders have low spider physical traits and still may have severe wobble, whereas some will have high physical traits with no wobble. ((it depends on the offspring of the spider and other snake. But it is actually very common to have a wobble from the spiders genes)) Breeders will often claim they have snakes with no wobble, but as we have learned it is impossible. The syndrome is completely associated with their patterns and entirely unable to be removed from the gene. If it were a genetic predisposition, it would have easily been bred out by now. While wobble severity certainly varies from individual to individual, one cannot predict whether the wobble will worsen or improve over time. Additionally, even if you bred a spider with little visible wobble, it can still produce young with an extreme wobble. It’s an unpredictable process. Pretty much every spider wobbles... Also this was copy and paste so if u wanna read the whole thing look it up on google www.google.com/amp/s/wheremyscalesslither.tumblr.com/post/149392453083/the-spider-ball-python-and-the-wobble/amp

I wholeheartedly agree with the whole lemon frost scenario. They're so bright and sharp in whites and yellows and have those black dottings, but they're extremely prone to tumors and they're gonna end up costing you an arm and a leg for one. Not to mention when these issues first persisted in this morph, the gourmet rodent (a wholesale company who created the morph) tried to breed for super lemonfrosts which resulted in hatchlings dying pretty quickly. It's eugenics in animals and the need for variation over health that really makes me rethink being in the reptile hobby :(

Thank you for talking about this. People think that it is fine to breed animals that has a "cute head wobble". It is very disturbing.

Thanks for bringing up that Spider is present in other mixes that have other names! I knew about Spider but I wanted a Bumblebee for a little while because I really liked the look and Pastel is one of my favorite morphs and I think mixes really well with other things. At the time I didn't know Spider was the only way to get that kind of pattern look, and now I know I don't want a Bumblebee!

It's disgusting how some breeders think it's okay to exploit 'sick' animals for profit.

Thank you for making this. I was aware of the spider gene in ball pythons, but had very little information on anything else. They really should have disclaimers wherever these animals are sold. I have a rescue wild-type male ball python and keep wondering about getting a female - now I know what to avoid if I end up buying instead of adopting - so thank you!
