I remember learning the Trinity knot for my high school senior portraits, and I was so excited while tying it that day. I was so proud of the menswear journey I had made since middle school, from wearing horizontally striped crew neck long sleeve t-shirts to wearing a white dress shirt and khakis with a tan tweed sport coat, a light grey fedora, and a dark brown tie knotted in that intriguing Trinity style. I thought I looked like a million bucks. We got the prints 2 weeks later and I immediately regretted (and still do 😖) that Trinity knot above all else. Oh well, it's all a learning process!

Hey Preston, I like the facial hair. So have been watching the channel for a little while, occasionally my young boys watch with me. Since loosing a lot of weight )138lbs) I am replacing my wardrobe with a classic style. My 7 yr old asked me a wonderful question the other day he said, "Dad why are you wearing gentlemans's clothes?" i replied that I am a gentleman and am learning to dress accordingly. He noticed so I must be learning. Thanks for the typs and time put into your channel

I actually think the two examples you show, the Merovingian and the villain from John Wick 4 work, but only because they're on an otherwise nearly monochrome look, where a textural difference can be very desirable. But, since that kind of monochrome look is really outside classical menswear, I think you're right that they basically have no place there, and are far too busy for the traditional tie, which is usually already the most colorful/dynamic part of the suit.
@JakeMo_
@JakeMo_ 2 ай бұрын
I was actually thinking the same thing, especially the one knot from John Wick since that one seemed more tame. But Preston's point on these knots being outside of the Classic Menswear style is what also what pulls me away from them.

@@CallOfCutie69 I’d agree a few years ago, but “old money” and whatnot has a pretty big overlap here-probably enough to outshine their core audience for the algorithm. KZbin in general has moved away from longer intros, though, it’s not just the tiktok spillover. Conciseness is required for algorithm performance now, for better or for worse. Personally I don’t really mind either way; after watching basically all their videos through the years it feels a little odd that it’s not there, but it’s also pretty convenient that they get straight into the video nowadays.

I had intended to try my hand at novelty knots, but I've found so few neckties that are long enough but thin enough to let met actually tie them that it simply hasn't worked out. When I was younger the half-windsor was my go-to, but I've found the Pratt to work much better. I wouldn't call it a truly universal knot but between the thickness of the material of the ties and the various shirt collar styles, I can just about always use this knot with proper tie selection for a given shirt collar and have it work out.

I typically wear the Trinity or the Eldredge as they are a sure conversation starter. And seeing as I'm quite introverted I find that they help me by making others approach me or provide a conversation pivot. They also fit my theme of being bold and expressive. I for example tend to wear army green or navy purple as an alternative to the commonly used navy blue suit. They serve the same purpose, but gives that slight touch of flamboyance. The army green looks almost charcoal grey in dark lighting and the navy purple can look kind of like navy blue in darker environments. It's almost like an iridescence effect.

The one novelty knot I genuniely enjoyed wearing back in the day was the Murrell knot. To pull it off, use a tie made of heavier-weight material with a blade that is a different, complementary color to the rest of the tie. The knot itself is perfectly normal. The novelty is that the blade sits on the front of the tie. You have to wear a cardigan with it (or else it looks like you tied your tie backwards), but if the colors complement well and nothing is too busy, it can be a nice addition, especially since the focus is on the length of the tie from your collar to the button of your cardigan and not directly on the knot.

Ties for me are one of the few things that I tend to be really traditional about. Full Windsor, dead straight, and it must be a wide knot. All too often I see really small knots that have no defined shape because they are too small or too tight. Use of the tie loop and pairing with a tie tack are also a must for me.

I'm a half-Windsor type of guy for its symmetry (thanks for teaching me that long ago by the way), but for some subculture event, I like sporting something more extreme. After all, on these, a suit already draws attention. Even if downgraded with a black dress shirt. Eldridge is bulky and along with those where the short end goes under the collar, terribly inconvenient for me. For Trinity, I even did a modified version where it goes behind the wide end, but still not my favorite. But with the right, dress code breaking outfit, Merovingian knot is a blast. Easy and strangely not an attention drawer, but the keen eyed viewer will love it. As for the rose knot... I want to see Preston's attempt in full length tying that. Or even better, Michael Novotny's Nomad. It's a challenge even for me, and I'm an origami artist.

This might be a young man's opinion, but I wouldn't agree with you on the novelty knots in regards to their formality. For example, I really like to use the trinity knot with a fully black tie. Most people don't even notice it and if they do... I feel like it is a nice detail. When it comes to the eldredge, it is honestly one of my favourites because of the ability to make you stand out among the crowd of really similar looking tie knots. At least for me, it is the knot that got me the most compliments. Having said that, I wouldn't really condemn them all to just informal parties. Apart from this tiny detail, I really liked the video and it definitely inspired me to learn a few more knots, since... well, let's say I may have a slight deficiency in the classical aspect of things.

Years ago, when I graduated basic, we (for some unknown reason) thought it would be a good idea to tie our ties in trinity knots for graduation. We're even allowed to do it "as long as everyone did it". Uniformity and all. Years later everytime I've had to throw on a suit (wedding, funeral, court) I've always done an eldredge. Randomly saw it in a shirt one day, tried it, thought it looked unique, stuck with it. Got complimented on it by a judge when fighting a racing ticket. If ya do it with confidence, people won't question it. Stay well dressed gents!
