Several other advantages to playing Australian formation, particularly at the recreational level: you put the net player’s forehand volley in a strong position, as most players have a weaker backhand volley and will more likely not poach as often or as successfully. You also put the server’s forehand groundstroke in position as he should be moving to the right after the serve. If the server can get the serve wide it will make the receiver try a down-the-line backhand, much tougher than going cross court. If all it gives your opponent a different look, one which could cause confusion as to how to attack.

Yep. Everything you said is correct. Thanks!

I was taught to watch the net player’s eyes. They give you an idea of if they are going to get it or let it go, often before they move

Watch the net player after serve has landed it’s a habit all good doubles players must have ! ❤

You know he was not going to touch that return regardless who he watches. The position he is standing would not allow that.

It's so tempting to always watch the ball flying. It took me a long time to stay focused to the front in doubles. And when I watch matches and try to examine one player's reaction or footwork, I still catch myself keeping my eyes on the ball.

@@2MinuteTennisI didn't listen properly, so I didn't get this😆 In fact almost always serve with this formation (right-handed 5.0) - players bh crosscourt tends to be much more confident than their up-the-line, and I can't accidentally hit my partner in the back. What happens (physically) - anyone have an explanation? - when the ball gets caught on the strings (serving a heavy kicker)? Then the ball can go flying into partner's face, back etc
@SmashTheNumbersАй бұрын
AT THE REC LEVEL: For Net Play, I generally just stand near the net on my designated side, in the middle of my side, when my partner is serving. On the Ad side, should I be closer to the centerline? On the Deuce side should I be closer to the alley? I do get burned a lot down the alley on returns, then I move to the alley and get a lot of balls down the middle.
@bournejason66Ай бұрын
What if the returner made the contact late and turned it into a down the line shot?🤔
@2MinuteTennisАй бұрын
@@bournejason66 the server is moving over to get it. And that isn’t a shot that people blister for a winner.

So you always serve wide to become predictable.....GOT IT!
@2MinuteTennisАй бұрын
Instead of making a snarky comment, why don’t you try it and see that it works. But instead, you’d rather NOT try it on the off chance that your rec opponent notices what you’re doing (which they won’t). Your opponents are happy that you’re not going to do what is taught in this video.
@mattroland5943Ай бұрын
@@2MinuteTennis ..Not snarky at all. You need to vary serve location, Wide, middle and 50% of time at the returner so he/she can't extend. Also, I don't use the formation to take away cross court return, If I am at the net and I line up pre your video, I will move or fake not to avoid cross court but draw the ball to me to put it away.

@@mattroland5943 MY experience as a REC player, which Ryan focuses on: 1. Ryan is generally correct that when the ball is outside, the stroke is to the inside and vice versa. The baseball rule applies here... that is why there used to be so much "shifting" with baseball players on defense. 2. Of all of your serve options, in doubles, don't overcomplexify this and just go wide for a righty most of the time. The return for a backhand is generally more difficult and the cross court return will be even more predictable. 3. Why would a returner be baited into hitting the ball TO the net player? Ryan teaches that you shouldn't do that. Players at the baseline should hit towards the players at the other baseline.
